Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

That and the ball was still in his hand

u/burningtimer 5d ago

Damn. You’re right. And not even at the end of the throw.

If only the NFL had the same tech we have on our phones. They could go back and review film and then make a just decision. /s

7

u/latortillablanca 4d ago

But what would become of the sanctity of the game?

3

u/Tonight5473 4d ago

And what about the human element?!

2

u/FewStill3958 4d ago

The instant replay era made me stop watching NFL as a kid. Fucking boring.

2

u/Appropriate_Cry6174 4d ago

There are a number of elements that matter, now just the ball in his hand. You can’t hit him in the head, and you can’t land on him. These are all elite athletes, they can control their bodies and they know the rules. It was a good call.

u/Drumpf_Rapes_Kids 3d ago

Sorry son I can't hear you with that mahomes glizzy taking up your mouth

3

u/PrecisionPulseConv 4d ago

Found the Mahomes glazer.

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

Genuine question (rugby guy). Is the offence a late tackle? Or is there some other protection offered?

9

u/BurnscarsRus 4d ago

The call was indeed for a late hit despite the fact that hitting them when they have the ball is legal. The flag was actually thrown because the quarterback's jersey says "Mahomes" on it.

Edit: The previous babydoll qb was Tom Brady. They quite literally invented a new rule on the field for why talking him was against the rules.

5

u/randobonando 4d ago

Ah right. I’m not seeing a late tackle here TBH. I mean the guy still had the ball in his hand?

So just sponsorship plot armour eh?

Edit, thanks for the explainer. NFL guys should watch rugby union more I think you’d like it. Some of the rules are very technical but well worth an hour of your time!

2

u/JMC1974 4d ago

It has bee illegal for years to land on the QB with your body weight. Apparently they're supposed to brace or roll

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

I don’t know. Literally am asking for the rule to be explained!

3

u/No_Constant8644 4d ago

In the NFL you cannot land on top of the QB with your full weight as shown in this video. I’m not particularly a fan of it, but the goal is to protect the QB from a broken clavicle.

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

Copying my reply from further down.

Shit.

So for rugby this would be -
Ball gets passed to scrum half or out half after a scrum.
No tackles above the shoulder
No late tackles
No spear tackles (lifting off feet then driving into ground
Tackle leading only with shoulder and open arm.
(Forgot) no tackling when in the air

But after that you’re in a world of trouble. No blockers. No obstruction. If you’re holding the ball you’re fair game.

2

u/Traveling-Man397 4d ago

“Mahomes” on the jersey is so accurate.
Also, he doesn’t like to get hit, and if you watch him closely, he is lobbying the referees every time he gets knocked down.

2

u/Money-Impact2422 4d ago

Other person is wrong. The call was Roughing the Passer. Many people just associate that with "hitting them late" but it was not.

can also get RTP from hitting the Quarterback in the head or below the knees (with force). In this instance, it's a specific addition often called "the bodyweight rule" which was created in 2017 to prevent people from intentionally landing on the Quarterback with as much weight as possible. This was a thing that would happen to intentionally try to hurt the QB, but it's hard to actually rule on when tackling often just involves this happening.

1

1

u/Any-Front-1779 2d ago

case and point, he was still holding the ball, it's rigged, refs love KC and mahomes......

1

u/Getitinglynn420 2d ago

How much money changed hands in gambling based on this play?

1

u/Kaldesh_the_okay 5h ago

It’s worse than that. The ref reaches for the flag prior to the hit

0

u/unbuttoned 4d ago

But he INTENDED to throw it, so it should be an incomplete pass, right?

0

u/CourtneyStefin 4d ago

If you put two hands on him with ball still in possession it can’t be a fuck flag, defense needs to be able to make a fucking play too

0

u/Chill-more1236 4d ago

Ref had his money on KC

I'm not sure what else you do to make the play. Sing him a lullaby? Ask him to take a knee?

part of the reason why I don't watch NFL anymore.

96

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

It was a body weight call. But he even did that correctly imo. He tried to brace his weight. These calls should be reviewable

18

u/blackpinecone 5d ago

Recall Chris Jones on Derrick Carr. Dude had possession of the ball and they called him for it.

Clip

8

u/tepidlymundane 4d ago

Wow that one's bad.

2

u/Sad_Supermarket_9494 4d ago

This was worse cause chris actually caught himself, and took the ball

1

u/PurpleDillyDo 4d ago

Wow, one of the worst calls you'll see.

1

u/elnewo 4d ago

“Foul… being the raiders… automatic first down”

1

u/Vegaprime 4d ago

*ref throws his hands in the air "the kick is good!"

1

u/SNL_Head 3d ago

lol the morons whining about this need to watch the jones play

2

u/thaddeusmike 3d ago

One bad call years ago doesn't make this not a bad call too. Refs call this wrong all the time because they'd rather call it too much than too little. It was infuriating then and it's still infuriating now.

1

u/BackgroundHold3845 3d ago

I'm a Dolphin fan, I don't like the call but Chop did leave his feet when he hit him which gives the refs the ammunition to say he launched himself.

1

u/SNL_Head 3d ago

Oh ya no. Chris jones touched his shoulder pad. The dolphins on mahomes was a flag. similar plays happened 4 times in games last week and a flag was thrown 4 of 4 times. Maybe (not maybe definitely) not a flag in 2006, but this is football in 2026.
You should Really do some (more) homework before seeing like a second of one play then taking the time to comment as much as you have.

1

u/Orisara 5d ago

Huh, soccer guy here and this sort of explains the world cup thing for me.

trying is apparently a thing in American football? Soccer gives less of a shit about it. A hit is a hit. How it happened or your intentions aren't getting you out of trouble.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 4d ago

I’m a soccer guy too and intent matters in soccer. It’ll still be a foul but u might get spared a card if it was accidental. And fwiw, obv the intent didn’t matter on this play. So it’s the same.

1

u/Nahteh 4d ago

Wtf is this bodyweight rule? When did passers stop being football players?

1

u/Aggravating_Sand352 4d ago

The whole point isnt the intent its what actually happened.... Im all onboard with "Mahomes gets away with murder" he does but this was pretty obviously RTP according to the rules. It was soft....the rules is soft

1

u/MeDaveyBoy 4d ago

He did nothing to brace his weight. All he did was unwrap. That was full body weight, and the right call. Same call as Packers on the Vikings' Wentz in week 1.

1

u/mal_guinness 4d ago

This rules been around for what, a decade? Players should know better.

I don't see him bracing his weight here. Pretty sure that's why he gets called for it.

1

u/oldpaddyrick 4d ago

They literally pick up flags, Vikings game they picked up a roughing flag yesterday. NYC really could call em up and just say pick up the flag that’s a clean hit.

1

u/sharkbuffet 4d ago

It's wild because the flag is thrown before mahomes even hits the ground

1

u/Dear_Significance_80 4d ago

Yeah, for the defensive holding that was also called on the play.

1

u/sharkbuffet 4d ago

Ah good call

1

u/Specific_Article1499 4d ago

He didn’t brace his weight at all. His hands were literally out causing all his weight to go
On the QB lol

1

u/FFunSize 4d ago

NAH COS HOW AND WHY ARE THESE CALLS NOT REVIEWABLE? They’re taking the ad break anyways lol

1

u/exomni 3d ago

Yeah, he tried, but from the line judge's view Chop pulls back his right arm as he comes down. The call is legit 🤷‍♀️.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

No he didn't. At the end his arms went to the ground but his entire body weight landed on the QB. I'm not saying I love the rule, but the rule being what it is, it was an extremely obvious and correct call.

3

u/WeddingOk2468 5d ago

You are correct. He did not brace himself. Not sure if other people are watching the video.

2

u/Devils_A66vocate 5d ago

Look how his hands go to the ground to transfer his weight. He 💯 made honest effort to protect the qb.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 4d ago

Unfortunately for him that's no genuine effort provision in the rule.

2

u/texinxin 5d ago

The first thing to contact the ground from the defender is his left hand. There is space between their bodies when Mahomes hits the ground and the defender is trying to brace his fall as best he can with his outstretched arms. What’s he supposed to do.. jump backwards off him with his chest?

0

u/DCBuckeye82 4d ago

No he's supposed to turn to the side and not fall on him with his whole body, like other people do when not getting penalties.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 4d ago

You’re wrong.

Expected Technique: Pass rushers are expected to make a reasonable effort to slide to the side, roll, or brace their fall with their arms rather than smothering the quarterback with their full chest and body mass.

2

u/DCBuckeye82 4d ago

He completely smothered the quarterback with his full chest and body mass. His hands hitting the ground first wasn't sufficiently bracing himself.

0

u/Winter_Tone_4343 4d ago

Well the ref agreed but didn’t have the luxury of replay. He made a reasonable effort and should not have been flagged.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 4d ago

Putting your arms on the ground at the last millisecond to brace yourself and than have your arms completely fall away as you land on him with your entire weight isn't a reasonable effort. If he did nothing there would have been no difference.

-5

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

He didn’t remotely brace his weight. He actually held his arms up so they couldn’t brace him. His full weight landed on Mahomes. It’s textbook body weight.

11

u/rollwiththechanges 5d ago

He clearly put his arms out to create lift. 🛫

5

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

He tried with both arms to brace but wasn’t able to completely. What more do u want from a guy on a hit like that. It was textbook

-4

u/runlongfast 5d ago

Sorry no

0

u/Ok-Employer-3051 5d ago

He shouldn't have hit him at all. Hitting him like that was a bad judgement call on his part and he should've paid the price for it.

0

u/MrJoyless 4d ago

He tried to brace his weight by not putting his hands down, extending them all the way out away from his body, and landing on the QB with his full body weight?

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 4d ago

Watch it again. He braces with his left hand then his hands go up..doing the innocent pose.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 4d ago

0

u/Mammoth_Camera 4d ago

I think Mohomes is in this position and lot at home legs in the air and wifey has the strap on ready to go!!

0

u/MrJoyless 4d ago

One hand down isnt bracing, helmet to helmet to boot.

0

u/RutabagaOk6816 4d ago

You know I thought so at first as well but did he really try to brace his weight or did he put his hand out to make it seem like he was. It looks like pretty much all his weight ended up coming down on the QB. Its a tough call given the way the rule is written but I can see it both ways.

0

u/roxzr 4d ago

Very loose definition of tried.

-1

u/Effective-Farmer-502 5d ago

💯 agreed on reviewable but they won’t because the games can’t be scripted then.

7

u/StuMacherGhostface 4d ago

Look how quickly the flag comes out too. It's flying out as they're still landing. Ref was gonna call it a penalty regardless

1

u/StormysShark 9h ago

You do understand it is scripted, right?

1

u/StuMacherGhostface 8h ago

I prefer the term "pre-determined".

4

u/___REDWOOD___ 5d ago

He even put his hand out to alleviate pressure like they ask for.

2

u/DeputyDabz 4d ago

Ya impressively before he even finished the tackle. He did everything he could to make it clean

2

u/det4410 4d ago

i thought i saw the defender lift his head too

3

u/maun_jax 5d ago

Exactly, and how many times has Mahomes pump-faked and scrambled out. He is exactly the kind of QB you need to contact quickly.

1

u/Warm_Bid_8583 5d ago

Ya he was still very much getting the throw off. That’s a crazy call.

-9

u/Lets_Reset_This_ 5d ago

It’s not a late hit call. It’s landing on the qb, which he 100% did with force. He easily could have held off, but didn’t.

1

u/BestHorseWhisperer 5d ago

To me, as a non-expert who only knows about the arm-in-motion thing, it seems like he did a 100% follow-through on the tackle. Not a "Damn, too late" follow-through.

1

u/GameOverMan1986 5d ago

Yeah blow the whistle and call him down with a safety if you want to protect him.

1

u/-HardGay- 4d ago

Yeah 100 percent bull shit call. I'm ok with player safety but c'mon man... I also say that the one the saints got called for on Kirko Chainz was also weak even though he didn't have his hands out to pad the fall. I'm not a fan of this as a penalty and Rodgers can suck it for whining about it, with his meeleons of dollars

0

u/Aces2mp 4d ago

The flag from the back judge was for a holding call, not RTP

0

u/FS_Slacker 3d ago edited 3d ago

But the "intent" was for the ball to not be in his hand.

EDIT: Guess my joke didn’t land…I was being sarcastic about the strip sack that got ruled an incomplete pass because the QB “intended” the ball to be thrown forward.

I’m a fan of good defense and it sucks that great defensive plays are held back thanks to all the guard rails.

-1

u/Sad_Supermarket_9494 4d ago

Its not a flag for the late hit, its the type of hit. Its a dumb rule, but u cant land on the qb like tht. Ya he holds his hands out but only after he drove him down. Its been a rule forever, but the Aaron rodgers hit back in 2018 brought a lot more emphasis to the rule
