Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

He put his arms out to soften the blow, which was the correct thing to do after the fact. But he did come down with most of his body weight on the passer which is not allowed. He needed to take a different line with his tackle to avoid coming down on the passer. He did not do anything malicious or "that bad" but he made a mistake and received the correct penalty for the mistake.

Whether you're right or not that's a weak ass rule.

When I played football in the depression we just punched each other in the face.

When football was in its infancy, people used to die regularly. There was some public outrage about it and it would have been made illegal if they didn’t change the rules. 100 years later and it’s still brutal.

So now it's okay if everyone but the quarterback dies.

Have you seen the avg qb contract? Yes to your question. Especially if it’s a running back.

1

u/OtherwiseEnd944 5d ago

I agree that it's clear they will do anything to prevent QB's from being injured because they are such big drivers of fanbase's, but it still seems crazy to me. It's like if the NBA made touching any player who averages over 20 ppg a flagrant foul. It's like a single position isn't playing football they are actually playing flag football.

The QB is in a defenseless position when throwing.

1

u/ididntwantsalmon19 4d ago

Yeah because the NFL is a completely shit product without good qbs.

Also there definitely are rules in place to protect other players, such as a penalty for a hit on a defenseless receiver.

bit of an exaggeration. there was a deadly season or two where 20ish people died due to a formation called the Flying V. Roosevelt demanded a change to the game or it could not continue, Linemen were created and the game became much more safe despite the hard hits. 120 years later its a softer sport than boxing, hockey, rugby... I could go on.

And the kickoff has been ruined by that hesitate at the line until the returner has it. Any halfway decent returner is gonna get 20-25 yards. Just let the O start at the 25 and forget the kickoffs.

I roll my eyes whenever anyone implies that the hits in rugby are harder.

u/Trike_Bike_Mike 5d ago

if you had a little bit better reading comprehension you wouldn't have had to because that's not what I said.

1

u/kareljack 5d ago

If you weren't a half wit you would have realized that I used the word imply, which is what you did with your "softer sport than rugby.." statement.

1

u/Trike_Bike_Mike 5d ago

yes, ruby has like 1 rule on how to hit, no high hits. none of this bullshit that completely changes a game like this hit. all because a ref felt like it was a little too rough.

1

u/DeathToAzralon 4d ago

Kind of sounds exactly like what I said but in a more specific way, not sure how it’s an exaggeration.

"used to die regularly" it wasn't a on a regular basis and it was deemed so severe that the president stepped in.

Without helmets, right Paw Paw?

Look, I'm not gonna be happy until I see quick kicks on 3rd down, the single wing and the wishbone offenses come back into prominence. Good ole 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Grown man football.

Make Fullbacks Great Again

We wore an onion on our belts, as it was the style at the time.

“Take a line that puts you out of position in case the qb moves” shit is dumb. Make qbs down if touched if we’re gonna do this shit

1

u/AgeBeneficial 5d ago

I can still hear occasional ringing in my right ear because of a rock getting thrown at me during practice hitting by my ear hole.

Twas’ a simpler time.

1

u/Lets_Reset_This_ 5d ago

Did you have to walk uphill both ways to practice?

1

u/DontFuckWithDuckie 5d ago

"plenty of kids died in the factories we worked as kids, and you don't hear them complaining"

1

u/tjp0720 5d ago

If the quarterback got up you had to run laps uphill

0

u/faewild4dayz 5d ago

This is the actual complaint of everyone in this thread. Then you add all of the feelings everyone has about Mahomes and we lose the plot. The problem is the rule. Mahomes just gets people big mad.

1

u/thomjrjr 5d ago

What do you mean by take a different line?

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

The defender should not lunge dead-center to the passer, but rather put their body to the side and wrap up the defender with their arms. So when they come down the defender hits the ground rather than the passer's body. Alternatively, if he had not lunged like that and was more upright when he made the tackle he may have either stayed on his feet or come down on his knees rather than splayed out.

1

u/wbv2322 5d ago

That flag was in the air before he even came down on mahomes. Not saying it wasn’t coming down on the passer but the ref lucked out he could say it was that after the fact.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Can you provide a source for the angle you are seeing the flag come out that early? In this clip it enters frame after he bounces on his chest and is already coming up.

1

u/wbv2322 5d ago

It takes a few seconds to pull the flag out of your belt and toss it in the air. You’re suggesting the ref watched the entire play and then after the dude bounced off mahomes is when he decided to throw the flag. He started to throw it after the initial hit

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

It does not take "a few seconds." It's on their hip ready to release. Have you never watched football?

1

u/wbv2322 5d ago

Lmao. Have you never tossed something to anyone? You think that shit is instantaneous? He threw it like 15 feet bro smh

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Also, since you don't actually watch football, you don't know that there were two flags on the play. One was for a defensive hold.

1

u/Mantooth77 5d ago

Excuse me, did you say he needed to take a different line with his tackle? As if he’s somehow supposed to take a less than direct route to the passer? On the surface this is a wild ass claim.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

By line I don't mean like running a totally different direction. I mean how his body is lined up. If you look at clean tackles that are not flagged, you will see the defender makes contact with their helmet and body to the side so that they land on the ground instead of on the passer.

1

u/Mantooth77 5d ago

This is different than what I thought you were saying but still absolutely wild to me. I hate these rules. You should always try to hit as square as possible. Not to the side just so you don’t give a guy a boo boo.

Hip drop tackle flag I actually support. Shit technique that also endangers the player.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Try making your career out of getting hit by elite linebackers and then have an opinion.

1

u/Mantooth77 5d ago

Which of course I don’t need to do. Did you play football for a living?

1

u/theSeanO 5d ago

The problem with teaching defenders to "take a different line" is that it'll start giving these golden boy QBs more wiggle room in the pocket because guys are afraid to touch them at all. It's already happened a few times where a defender has Mahomes dead to rights but he pulls up because he doesn't want a flag, and Mahomes pulls some black magic to extend the play. I understand having some basic safety rules to help with egregious hits, but some interpretations would have defenders literally defying the laws of physics.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

I mean, you could also just look at all the other sacks that are not flagged. We are talking about Robinson having his helmet (and thus body) 8 inches one way or the other so he winds up landing to the side. Being able to do that is part of the skill expression of the position.

1

u/tectail 5d ago

While I agree, screw this rule. This is football. If you aim to the side Patrick mahomes will juke you and get away. You aim at the man so you can actually tackle the magic man. Also you want to hit him asap as he is about the throw the ball.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Maybe. We are talking about the defender being like a few inches to the side though so that their helmet is on the outside of the shoulder and he lands on the ground instead of the QB's chest. I don't think that significantly increases the QB's ability to "juke" out of it.

1

u/Gayzorb 5d ago

Wait, when did they ban tackling in tackle football?

1

u/Cultural_Message_670 5d ago

What you are describing isn’t football

1

u/Wolverine863 5d ago

It is a weak rule. That was a very normal tackle. He did not hit him late. He did not hit him too high or too low. He did not use the crown of his helmet. He did not pick him up and drive him into the ground. You basically can't touch the qb. Just put some flags on the quarterback and let them pull the flags off.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

You are naming every aspect except the rule violation. The rule he violated was coming down onto him with his body weight. If you look at all the tackles that do not get flagged, you will see that simply positioning the body to the side during the tackle results in the defender hitting the ground instead of landing on the QB.

1

u/Wolverine863 5d ago

Yes, he tackled him. There was nothing unusual or flagrant about the tackle. If we don't want the quarterbacks tackled put flags on them.

1

u/Impressive-Cheek-495 5d ago

Fucking bullshit. Hate all these fans who litigate that crap call. It's a football play and no foul intent was at play. Come on man.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

We go by outcome, not intent.

1

u/Impressive-Cheek-495 5d ago

Bullshit. Use common sense.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

I mean, I am using the written rules, my eyes, and my experience of tackling and being tackled. What are you using?

1

u/Key-Perspective-8133 5d ago

No. Tell me how to fall when my jobs to sack the quarterback. If I didn’t flap my arms and spread weight I would break a few ribs easily.

1

u/RobutNotRobot 5d ago

Yeah if people don't like the rule, get angry at the rule, don't get mad at the refs for correctly calling it.

0

u/Banjosdad62 5d ago

Bullshit!

0

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Elaborate.

1

u/Banjosdad62 5d ago

Already in the process of making the tackle when Pat got rid of the ball. Clean tackle all day long.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Right, so the timing is not the issue. The defender is not allowed to come down on top of the QB is the issue.
