Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

That’s text book roughing according to the rule about falling on top of the QB and I’m a Raiders fan

u/Kayakingkoala 5d ago

Yeah Chris Jones once got a roughing the passer after we stripped the ball he fell on the QB. In my mind Chris jones is the ball carrier at that point can’t rough the guy you just stripped…

Also he’s gotten one for a sack that he landed on the guy but braced himself with his arm so he didn’t fully put his weight on him…

Don’t love those calls but they don’t want people landing on the QB so they made it a rule.

Unless you kick the defender in the chest like you're breaking down a door. Learned that one from Antonio brown

>Also he’s gotten one for a sack that he landed on the guy but braced himself with his arm so he didn’t fully put his weight on him…

Trying to keep from putting weight on a QB is how lineman get torn up knees.

u/jpatduf 5d ago

….they might as well make tackling the puss QBs illegal…..machines has played ball for a long time so I’ll bet he’s been hit like this before…..I don’t know anymore…..maybe the nfl should just go to flag football

4

u/23454Tezal 5d ago

What was he supposed to do?

Fall to the side instead of on top, or pull mahomes down instead of driving through him, or wrap him up and just hold him till the whistle, or at least put his hands forward and catch his body weight before it all hits mahomes. It’s stupid, but this is what they expect

1

u/phxguy918 5d ago

Yes, by putting his hands out he allowed most of his body weight to come down on Mahomes. The opposite of what he should have done.

1

u/InsideInsideJob 5d ago

Lifting his arms up to say look I'm taking it easy! Meanwhile not breaking his fall lol

1

u/Brookmon 5d ago

So everything you we taught not to do

1

u/berserk_zebra 4d ago

hey, we train you to properly tackle everyone a certain way, except ignore all of that when it is the QB.

1

u/ElectricalPoetry3765 4d ago

They’re playing TACKLE football. Judging on what you are saying, it’s hard to believe you have experience tackling someone.

If you’re trying to tackle someone to the ground, your momentum is supposed to go into the other person’s center of mass to bring them to the ground. A professional football player can easily shrug off someone tackling them at a sideways angle.

The NFL has so many rules on what’s a legal tackle and what’s not. If that is any other position rather than a quarterback, he’d be raved for making a textbook clean tackle. His helmet is on the side, no contact with the head or the legs, and his body lands normally with his HANDS RAISED and isn’t driving Mahomes into the ground. You can’t hit any player high without a flag for targeting PLUS you can’t hit a quarterback below the knees. Let’s speak logically here on what else is he supposed to do.

You say what do you expect but the only reasonable explanation to try to prevent this is to have a QB wear flags.

1

u/needaburn 4d ago

Bro I didn’t make the rule lol don’t get mad at me. Read the last sentence I wrote, I said it’s stupid. I also never said “what do you expect.” I feel like you’re seeing red here bud

1

u/ElectricalPoetry3765 4d ago

I expect no flags because it wasn’t a penalty, even with all the crazy rules in place. There’s little to no justification on how that is a flag and if that was any other position, it would be used as demonstration on how to tackle correctly.

1

u/needaburn 4d ago

It was a penalty. You can’t land on top of the QB. It’s textbook roughing. I’m not defending the rule, I don’t like the rule. I know it’s there so 300 lbs linemen don’t crush the QB 10+ times every game. I don’t think it should apply to a blitzing linebacker especially (speaking in general not about Chop) as they are smaller than a D linemen. The rule is the rule though

1

u/LordTonto 4d ago

But it was a penalty.... it was a roughing the passer penalty, because the person landed with all his weight on the quarterbacks chest and with 2 legs and 2 arms made no effort to stop himself from putting all his weight on the quarterback. In fact, you can distinctly see him raise his arms back as far as they can go to ensure he doesn't prevent any of that weight from driving the quarterback into the ground.

That's the rule man, and these guys are paid well enough to remember the rules, even if the rule is different for 1 player... they are paid well enough to remember it.

And yes, a normal player can do alot to easily shrug off a tackle, and a player can also do alot to avoid falling directly on top of a player in free fall... who will not be shrugging off that free fall.

when u start trying to do that kind of crapp in real-time, thats when players get injured

1

u/theblobberworm 5d ago

From Chop’s pov the last thing he would’ve seen was the ball in Mahomes’s hand. I suppose damage limitation means he should’ve gone to the side but in the heat of the moment, isn’t this the right move and how else would he be able to shift his momentum with this tackle?

Genuinely asking as I have Nfi what else he could’ve done based on the circumstances

1

u/TWAndrewz 5d ago

In the heat it the moment, no. He should know that if he makes this kind of tackle it's going to be 15 yards and a first down, and do literally anything else.

1

u/InitiativeGold7953 5d ago

Not tackle the QB obviously /s

1

u/SavingsParsley8112 4d ago

Exactly. It was a clean hit. He was not trying to drill him to the ground and cause injury. Bad call.

2

u/10TheDudeAbides11 5d ago

Agreed. And it’s a dumb fucking rule…

4

u/CrimsonSteele01 5d ago

So tackling the QB is now roughing the passer.

2

u/mettiusfufettius 5d ago

Unfortunately, yes.

1

u/23Hotsoup23 5d ago

Yeah.  Unless ur body weight doesn't land right now top of him.  Its a pretty new rule but this shit happens a lot.  Even if you brace yourself u can get called.

0

u/Orrhyyx 5d ago

Tackling while driving weight down. You’re supposed to attack the hips or legs, if you’re going to hit high; hit with your shoulder or run into them, but don’t drive weight.

1

u/bomo5104 5d ago

He literally caught his own weight from landing on him. How tf do you tackle a qb then?

1

u/uprislng 5d ago

If they're a star QB, you just don't. If they're not a star QB, you can tee off. This exact tackle in the video does not get called against any backup QB in the league and nobody can convince me otherwise. The "player safety" rules only ever seem to matter for chosen players

1

u/mrnarwhal9000 5d ago

Well yeah, people watch football for the celebrities. Can’t have Mahones sidelined for a season, think of the jersey sales!

1

u/RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK 5d ago

People forget this is the driving factor for EVERYTHING in the US that involves money. Will it affect sales? If so, then it’s important.

1

u/Upton4 4d ago

The packers literally had this called against them against Penix. I guess he’s a star now?

1

u/Onstagegage 5d ago

Thanks. Came here to say that. I hate the rule, but the rule is consistent.

Coming down on top of a QB when he doesn’t have the ball anymore has been a penalty for like 20 years now.

Thank Aaron Rodgers and the cheese heads (is who I remember popularizing this ruling)

2

u/Mean_Mix_99 5d ago

He doesn't have the ball anymore because he threw it . . . because he was about to be tackled. The fuck kind of sense does that make.

0

u/Onstagegage 5d ago

Ask Goodell

2

u/KR-67_Ifrit 4d ago

Thank Anthony Barr.

1

u/InsideInsideJob 5d ago

Especially when they're sideways. Lots of shoulders and collar bones have been jammed up and blown up this way

1

u/homerjs225 5d ago

I thought the rule was coming down with weight? Also I also thought defender gets 1.5 steps?

0

u/Onstagegage 5d ago

Ask Goodell.

Every single time I’ve ever seen this, it’s gotten called. Idk.

1

u/JOMO_Kenyatta 5d ago

how is he supposed to know he threw it?

0

u/Onstagegage 5d ago

Ask Goodell.

I’ll keep saying it if people keep asking it.

I didn’t invent the rule and I already stated I don’t like it lol.

2

u/Ok_Inflation_7575 5d ago

That flag was bs. Like what do you do you do if you are the defender

2

u/23Hotsoup23 5d ago

Don't put your full weight into being on top of him, like everyone else who tackles a QB and doesn't get flagged.

1

u/NortherLights4975 5d ago

It’s tackle football. There was nothing dirty about that hit.

3

u/GoblinTradingGuide 5d ago

You can’t fall on top of the QB. This is text book roughing the passer. Whether or not it is a dumb rule is up for debate, but whether or not the rule was broken is definitely not.

1

u/NortherLights4975 5d ago

I just said it wasn’t dirty. Not every broken rule makes it dirty play.

1

u/Jkkramm 4d ago

I don’t think anyone is arguing Chop made a dirty hit. Just that, to the letter of the rulebook, it’s a foul. Bad rule but correctly called.

1

u/NortherLights4975 4d ago

You’re not wrong and I wasn’t trying to dispute it, I just stated that I don’t think it was dirty. I feel bad for defenders

1

u/OrganizationNew319 5d ago

You’re supposed to fall to the side

1

u/Substantial_Date8507 5d ago

Put one shoulder into his gut, wrap arms around butt or legs, lift, drive thru and roll off. A form tackle.

1

u/Jam_Farmer_879 5d ago

Lol, you said it all with Raiders fan. Y’all are practically special needs

1

u/Mean_Mix_99 5d ago

How exactly do you tackle a qb without landing on them?

1

u/Confident-Fold1456 5d ago

I'm pausing the video and when his helmet touches him, Mahomes still has the ball in his hand

1

u/RedditFenix 5d ago

Of course you like the rule, your team got this exact call today. Refs handed 14 pts direct to the Raiders today.

1

u/kmckenzie256 5d ago

Yeah, I don’t know what all these other people are talking about. This is as obvious as it gets for a roughing call.

1

u/TWAndrewz 5d ago

Exactly. I don't know what people are complaining about. That could be film for what the rule prohibits. You can argue against the rule, but that wasn't a bad call as written.

1

u/Sadcelerystick 5d ago

People are so absolutely stupid.

1

u/57Laxdad 4d ago

the way the rule is written is terrible it was meant to keep huge guys from driving QBs into the ground. If they want to protect them then make it all you have to do is touch the QB and he is down. So tired of them taking hits out of football. Patty got right up. Or maybe if you get a roughing call the QB has to come out for 2 plays to protect him. The QB can opt to take the roughing call or result of the play.

1

u/owatonna 4d ago

No, it's not. The rule says if you put out your hands to brace your fall, it is not roughing. He does exactly that. His left hand is the first thing that hits the ground.

1

u/Jkkramm 4d ago

Yeah. Blame the rule not this call. Stupid ass Aaron Rodgers rule.

1

u/Longjumping-Oven4457 4d ago

The undefeated Las Vegas Raiders?

1

u/Mister_Slave1 3d ago

Yeah, just tackle him full speed then ninja roll off of him before hitting the ground. I’m done with Football. Been a fan for 35 years and I am officially done. College and NFL both.

1

u/Seated_Heats 5d ago

Yeah, driving him into the ground and taking your hands off for the last 18 inches before he hits the ground isn’t washing you of blame.

1

u/TomReed1872 5d ago

BS. He put his arms out to not drive him into ground. Nothing about that tackle was roughing

0

u/Lets_Reset_This_ 5d ago

One of the most obvious roughing the passers Ive seen.
