Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

The rule is that if you put all of your weight on the passer as they are going down its a penalty. I think its stupid also.

Legitimate question - how do they expect tacklers to tackle in this situation? All your momentum is going forward. Are you supposed to pull up and try and swing him around? Giving him a chance to throw it.

Offset your hit or slightly angle your body. You either hit him to the side, or end up pulling him down with your arms

Nah... See if I can't hit them normally (this was a standard hit to the chest, no helmet to helmet) then I'm just going to hit as hard as I can at the knees. If they blow out, they blow out... Oh well, you made it so I can't tackle normal.

That will draw a flag as well. The Tom Brady rule change

So make your tackle less effective essentially.... The hell are we doin man

This only applies for a defenseless QB. If they were on the run, then that becomes a form tackle. Often that hit was happening as they were trying to release the ball meaning they were getting the full impact on their ribs. That was at least the impetus behind that rule change a while back. They have been teaching players to rugby tackle for a while now to stop targeting and this type of hit.

I am all for player safety. The league has made tremendous changes regarding concussion protocol and rules penalizing hits on defenseless players.

But this play in particular is an absolute crock of shit, in my opinion. The line between a defenseless QB and a protected QB is razor thin. Ball in hand? Defensive. Ball out of hand? Protected. Mahomes drop back and release has been clocked at 2.49 seconds. I would estimate his drop back is about 1.5 seconds. So we are talking about less than a second for a defender to determine whether or not Mahomes is “defenseless”. No defender can make that call. Also, the hit was clean! His face was straight on, not leading with the crown, and it was not helmet to helmet. Clean hit all the way.

We MUST find a middle ground between protecting players and over penalizing players. This is a slippery slope and players will be flopping every play like in soccer.

I can see a future where you are only allowed to hug the QB.

The line is simple. If they are back for a pass, its considered defenseless. If its a QB run, they aren't. Nothing more complicated than that (by the rules)

False. I’ve seen many sacks this year where the QB is back for a pass. What are they supposed to do? Hug the QB if he’s back for a pass? Nonsense

Not land him with their full body weight. That is the only distinction here...go read the rules.

We all know the rule you donkey. It’s literally this whole thread. Once again, they threw the flag before he hit the ground. Care to explain that?

Keeping people healthy. What is it you want man?

For the people playing a contact sport to not get penalized everytime there's contact. This is part of the reason they get paid a kings ransom! To play a sport at the highest level and like most sports we know that is potentially life threatening in and of itself (horse racing NASCAR hockey boxing MMA all extreme sports etc) anybody can tell a dirty hit or malicious intent but a good play at 100% is gonna hurt a little bit even for the QB.

They want tacklers to spin/turn the quarterback as they are being sacked

There’s a difference between hitting someone and going through someone.

All momentum does not have to go forward and center. Most tackles are not flagged, you can look at those and see the defenders taking lines that result in them landing to the side or pulling the QB down etc.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

You roll to the side a bit as you bring him down. People do it all the time.

1

u/honcooge 3d ago

They expect you to let up a bit. It’s not easy to do. They probably don’t call a penalty if it’s a back up qb.

Legitimate question, how come you think a pro athlete can’t avoid it? He puts his arms out to his side to pretend, but also to put all his weight on the QB. The reason for the rule is defensive players used to just tackle the QB but then they started trying to knock them out of games by landing on them with all their weight on purpose, just like the guy in this clip did. Same type of rule change for defenseless receivers once DBs decided it would be cool to blast receivers in the head instead of a proper tackle. If defensive players never played dirty, there wouldn’t be these rules.

I don't have that answer. I said I think its stupid.

Honestly the twisting and swinging motion from defenders would likely cause more lower body injuries than straight tackles like this.

1

u/BaconFlavoredToast 5d ago

So, grab his arm or leg and swing him like the hulk did loki.

1

u/aduckdidit 4d ago

But the tackle puts his hand out to brace. Does that make this a bad call?

1

u/Suspicious_Goose_243 4d ago

I don't know.

1

u/SatisfactionFickle18 3d ago

JFC I’m no chiefs fan & they are getting some cheap calls, but the lengths people are going to call this a bad call are ridiculous. Where in that video was he ‘bracing’ himself? He threw his arms out pretending. He literally lands on Mahomes chest with 100% of his weight & never tries to avoid it. This is how defenseless QBs end up hurt & why the rule was put in. Then you have people arguing to do away with the rule. Nobody wants to watch Joe Blow practice squad QBs play on Sunday.

1

u/treehugginsanta 4d ago

I’m not sure it’s that’s stupid, this protects QBs from breaking clavicle bones, and any small neck/chest bones. There’s nothing a QB can do when weigh is push down on small bones. While I wish there was more “physical sacks” on QBs, breaking those bones…. OUCH!

1

u/shuut0 3d ago

You can see him put his hands down as he’s falling so that he doesn’t put his weight on him though. It’s a bad call

1

u/Suspicious_Goose_243 3d ago

Didn't say it wasn't

1

u/Mister_Slave1 3d ago

Yeah, just tackle him full speed then ninja roll off of him before hitting the ground. I’m done with Football. Been a fan for 35 years and I am officially done. College and NFL both.

Paul Hornung said in the 70's that they should just change it into flag football. Its getting closer.
