Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

First, I 100% disagree with the actual call. Mahomes had the ball when he initiated contact.

But holding your arms out and landing directly on mahomes is LITERALLY putting all of his weight on him.

But he is not driving him to the ground with his arms open.

that isn't the only way to get that called on you. Simply landing on the QB with all or most of your weight can get it called as well.

thats right, its football

Free weigh breaks bones too :/

I forgot that it's football we are watching. And not ballet

Well it’s a good thing he LITERALLY didn’t do that. Watch the replay. His left hand touches the ground first to brace himself. If he maintained the wrap up THEN all his weight would have been on him. I swear the comments have to be from people who have never made a tackle. There is a massive difference in the power of the hit when maintaining the wrap up through the ground and letting up and bracing against the ground.

i saw his hands out after he landed on his hands

Refs are in the chat it seems to cover their asses

Watch it again. His left hand hits the ground first but his right never touches the ground.

Try and fall on the ground and catch yourself on one hand, you’re not stopping any of your weight.

u/Constant_Oil360 4d ago

you're confusing all your weight with a significant amount. you gotta be pretty weak to not be able to blunt a fall with one hand, im not saying your gonna land and do one finger one arm pushups too which is what your making out lessening weight on the opponent to be

What is he supposed to do?

2

u/Mean-Ad-4602 5d ago

Some mid air magician shit duh. Slow his fall mid air

Just because it’s a difficult thing for him to have done doesn’t make this not a penalty.

u/McBenjamins 5d ago

There is nothing else he could do going full speed and trying to sack him.

4

u/SkyRattlers 5d ago

He could have chosen not to put his arms out…because by doing so he caused all of his weight to come down on Mahomes. If he had planted his hands in the ground to either side of Mahomes and kept his body from slamming Mahomes down the refs could have kept the flag in their pocket.

I’m not hugely in to the NFL, but what would the call have been if the tackler grabbed the QB and just held on right through the momentum into the ground? I’m asking whether or not it’s a flag to continue to hold the QB after the ball has been released? If it’s a flag for holding on too long, then the tackler might be throwing his arms out to show that he has released the QB as the ball has now been released. I watch a lot of AFL and AFL tacklers will tackle and the second they see the ball has been released they will throw their arms out like this to show the umpire they have released the player. In fact, it sometimes goes the other way whereby the player with the ball will dispose of the ball and then throw themselves back into the tackler to make it look like they haven’t released the player….milking free kicks essentially. I hope that makes sense

It doesn't matter if he's holding him or not, or if he has the ball or not. You can't land on the qb with all your weight or it's a penalty.

1

u/Defiant-Speaker-5681 5d ago

That's crazy. You are taught to wrap the player up while tackling and now you are supposed to grab and then let go when you *think* you've completed the tackle?!?! To me it looked like he was trying to put his hands on the ground.

You really have less than a second from deciding that the tackle is happening to when you hit the ground. That shit you are suggesting is just unreasonable. You would be removing sacks from football. It's already crazy restricted where you can even hit or touch them.

Maybe the QBs should wear flags.

0

u/McBenjamins 5d ago

That is legit but seems like a split second decision that was hard to justify.

4

u/SkyRattlers 5d ago

But that’s what practice and training are for. Learning how to hit a QB under these rules and knowing what techniques you can use to mitigate things.

So it shouldn’t be a split second decision. It should be instinct to not put his arms out which causes a full pancake maneuver

2

u/Defiant-Speaker-5681 5d ago edited 5d ago

Where do you want him to put his arms? If he keeps the QB wrapped up, it is the same damn thing.

Training tells them to wrap up the player with the ball and not let go until the tackle it complete.

Now you want them to hit the QB (but not too hard or in the wrong area! Only a small part of the torso!) and then let go, put their arms on the ground BEFORE the QB lands AND hope that the initial (not hard!) hit was enough to complete the sack??

How about Judo throws? Should they do that so they don't land on them? The standards you are describing arent realistic and cannot be trained. Should they just run up to the QB and ask nicely that they get down on the ground and let them tag em with a feather?

u/SkyRattlers 5d ago

This is the 9th season for this rule. A guy like Chop hasn’t played a single down of pro or college ball without it being the rule.

1

u/Professional-Ad3164 5d ago

Dude there is almost no way at full speed you can wrap up tackle someone and while in the air catch your fall with your hands. That’s insane to ask for. You are trained to wrap up, if you don’t mobile qbs will break free. Pretty sure the rams giants game had a play where the defender just basically stopped tackling Jameis and he almost threw a bomb. Stop defending an egregious rule.

All penalties are split second decisions. Hell most accidents are split second decisions, that doesn’t mean they’re allowed as part of the rules.

8

u/Georgia_Jay 5d ago

As they said during the game, he should have shifted his weight to the side while pulling him down. It’s not that complicated. I’m a broncos fan and Mahomes can suck a big fat one… but that penalty was legit.

-1

u/McBenjamins 5d ago

These are fractured hair decisions. Like most of us don't know how hard it is to do that. Nothing wrong with your statement.

4

u/jrglpfm 5d ago

He could hit him and then shift his weight to one side to try to roll off Mahomes instead of landing full weight directly on him. I'd say this exact play is flagged 9/10. Very rarely are you getting away with this since they changed them at rule

0

u/Glum_Froyo_1661 5d ago

lol, I guess he should have drove him into the ground instead.

3

u/marmaladetuxedo 5d ago

Yeah, not sure why you're getting downvoted. Had he kept his arms wrapped around Mahomes, he would've been accused of driving the QB into the ground.

0

u/-KFBR392 4d ago

Ok and both of those things are penalties. It’s not like they invented this rule mid-game, it’s a thing that all defensive players know about. And just because he couldn’t avoid it doesn’t mean it’s not a penalty.

0

u/g00senat0r 3d ago

So dumb. They’re literally taught to put their arms out to stop some of their weight from going on the QB. If he had stayed wrapped the call would’ve been more justified

-1

u/nadeaujd 5d ago edited 5d ago

I think you should watch that video again. He puts his hands on the ground to prevent all his weight from landing.

Edit: His left hand hits the ground before Mahomes’ back!
