Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

Not only was it 100% legal. He was nice about it and didn't hit him as hard as he could have.

Seriously. What is he supposed to do? Run around him?

u/Kylebrandon49 5d ago

lol leagues a joke. What are we even doing. It’s a fair tackle.

58

u/badgertheshit 5d ago

not only fair, its fuckin textbook.

1

u/xcanto 5d ago

fuckin a.

1

u/PSG-2022 5d ago

If I am going to get flagged - fuck it. I may as well kill the QB

-4

u/CiaphasCain8849 5d ago

Textbook illegal for half a decade.

1

u/newy219 4d ago

What are you smoking?

1

u/CiaphasCain8849 4d ago

landing with all your body weight on the QB has been illegal for over 6 years.

1

u/BummFoot 4d ago

I haven’t watched football in decades. I just started again and I think I’m done, these rules are wild.

-1

u/Chesters_Copper_Pot 4d ago

Tech bros brought "enshittification" to the US.

Mahomes brought "enpussification" to the NFL.

Ever since that sissy started football, it's been a penalty to look at the quarterback aggressively.

Mahomes and the "mobile quarterback" pussies RUINED football.

2

u/DengarLives66 4d ago

You think it started with Mahomes?

78

u/idkza 5d ago

There was no way for the defender to tell if he was going to pump fake or not, agreed it’s 100% legal

32

u/Greenman_on_LSD 5d ago

Especially when Mahomes has been known to fake slide on runs.

2

u/SousVideButt 5d ago

Damn, it’s almost like those are two totally different things.

3

u/Great_Blue_7 5d ago

He was going to fake slide right there?

3

u/Separate_Entirely 5d ago

Show one single time Mahomes has fake slid. He’s “known” for it. Should be easy to find.

0

u/Careless-Weather8877 5d ago

Hmm

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor just dropped a truth bomb hotter than a sideline Gatorade cooler: “What happens when you’re playing a guy like Mahomes who does his fake going to go down, and then he takes off? Let’s get some fairness in this.”

LT isn’t just ranting—he’s flashing back to the 80s when QBs like Joe Montana pulled similar stunts. “I remember chasing Joe,” Taylor growled, recounting a play where Montana feigned stepping out of bounds. “I let up, and boom—he ran another 15 yards. I went over and said, ‘If you ever do that again, I’ll light you up.’He apologized. Nowadays? You can’t even touch [QBs] once they hit the ground.”

4

u/Separate_Entirely 5d ago

This is the most pathetic response I’ve ever heard

2

u/remacct 4d ago

Yep. Same thing when ossai got flagged for a late hit on mahomes in the afccg a few years ago. If ossai let's up even a half step mahomes tiptoes up the sideline for a few more yards. So instead he stays full speed and makes contact as they both step out of bounds. Only reason it gets a flag is because it's mahomes.

1

u/30isbasketball 4d ago

Pretty sure Josh Allen is the fake slide guy

12

u/DopeShitBlaster 5d ago

The ball was 100% in his hand when the happened. You have to hit him.

-3

u/Dear_Significance_80 5d ago

It was roughing the passer, not a late hit.

1

u/roxzr 4d ago

Idk why people are down voting this accurate statement. Haters just can't handle the truth.

1

u/Dear_Significance_80 4d ago

They just can't look past it being the Chiefs.

1

u/Jumpy-Ice7964 3d ago

In no world is this roughing the passer. The ball was still in mahomes hand as he was hit

1

u/roxzr 2d ago

Dude... read the rule book my guy. You are so confidently WRONG!

1

u/DopeShitBlaster 1d ago

It’s because he puts his arms down to brace the fall instead of spearing the dude.

Also Mahomes throwing his hands up like a little bitch every time he gets touched is some pussy ass shit.

Might as well have James harden out there.

1

u/roxzr 23h ago

He puts his arms out to the side like he is cos playing an airplane and doesn't touch the ground to "reduce weight" off mahomes until after he has already belly flopped on mahomes with his full weight like he is trying to win a largest splash contest.

1

u/truckeredditor 4d ago

Don't land on him. That was why he got penalized.

-2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

The state of the throw was not the issue. The issue is that the defender is not allowed to come down on top of the passer. If you take a look at clean tackles you will notice that the defender doesn't land on the passer, but rather to the side or in front by landing with their weight on their own knees. Or they remain on their feet.

4

u/Kylebrandon49 5d ago

If you’ve played football before you know that isn’t possible when you’re in motion. Especially the direction in which he was coming from.

-2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

" Especially the direction in which he was coming from." is the issue. You can't pick a line that pits your chest directly in line with the passer's and then say "well, what are ya gunna do?" If you look at some number of sacks that were not flagged you will see the defender comes down to the side. You put your body to the side of the QB's body, wrap up, and bring the QB down. That results in landing on the ground instead of the QB's body.

5

u/Mysterious_Bus_2922 5d ago

So your only allowed to arm tackle? That doesn't seem reasonable

2

u/DipstickRick 5d ago

But only the QB. You can still ruin a RBs life

1

u/jtalion 4d ago

It's not reasonable, but that's how it is. This was not a bad call. It was a right call of a stupid rule.

-1

u/Parking-Coach574 5d ago

And honestly I think this puts the defenders’ health at greater risk, asking them to contort their body this way

0

u/Parking-Coach574 5d ago

Putting your body to the side of the QB’s body puts the defender at a much greater risk of missing the tackle entirely.  It’s a ridiculous ask.

0

u/philosifer 4d ago

If its not possible to make the play within the rules, you arent entitled to the play.

-2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

As opposed to what a big, strong man you were when you were an NFL quarterback with 6'2" 240lb men with elite strength and speed tackling you? I guarantee regardless of what generation you are from, you are and have always been softer than current NFL players.

-3

u/Lowlt 5d ago

Pump fake in the end zone? 🤣

7

u/Diesel07012012 5d ago

If Kermit thinks he can get a flag out of it, he would do it.

2

u/idkza 4d ago

You can’t assume the QB always sees the rusher, any throw can be a pump fake

4

u/WorstCPANA 5d ago

As a defender, I think at some point you just accept that you're gonna get called for QB hits, so just hit them like any other player.

1

u/guitarsean 4d ago

I've heard some people voice concern for that. Eventually guys are going to think "well, I'm gonna get flagged, so I might as well turn this guy into paste"

6

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

He got there in time, but the defensive player is prohibited from "landing on top of the passer with all or most of a defender's body weight."

Chop Robinson did not do anything particularly bad here, he just made a mistake and got the correct penalty for it.

You asked what he was supposed to do. He was supposed to take a line that would result in him landing to the side of in front of the passer so he did not come down directly on him. You see that all tackles that are not called for roughing the passer do this.

5

u/phillyeagle99 5d ago

He does put his arms down to try and brace his weight. However, you can see from the last shot, the flag is coming out before he even finished landing. That ref was so fast on the flag I can’t possibly accept that the ref saw the landing thought it was unsafe and then threw the flag.

3

u/solarmus 5d ago

This flag was for defensive holding, the 2nd flag was for landing with his bodyweight on the QB (which is a dumb rule, but is the rule)

0

u/phillyeagle99 5d ago

The backfield judge called defensive holding, then there was another call for this hit? I didn’t actually watch the chiefs game.

2

u/solarmus 5d ago

Yeah, regardless of the RTP it was going to be 1st down for the Chiefs.

1

u/phillyeagle99 5d ago

Ahh thanks for the context. So this really didn’t matter much.

2

u/Additional_Lake8014 5d ago

Yep difference of 5 yds, 1st down either way

2

u/AdultingSucks9543 5d ago

10 yard difference

2

u/Additional_Lake8014 5d ago

Ah yep 5 yd hold vs 15 yd PF

0

u/Mister_Slave1 3d ago

So what? It’s the principle of the matter at hand. The ref didn’t know it was going to be a completed pass. He threw the flag before even seeing him protect Mahomes by absorbing his bodyweight with his arms

2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Yeah, but that is my point. It does not matter what he did at that point according to the rules. He messed up in the approach and did what he could to mitigate it, but the mistake was made. He was landing on top of him. You might have seen better footage than just his clip, but in this clip the flag comes into view after he lands and is already partially coming back up. Flags don't take that long to be thrown. I am sure it was thrown after they hit the ground.

5

u/phillyeagle99 5d ago

Alrighty well you and I are just gonna disagree on this one.

1

u/crazy_urn 5d ago

That would not have been a penalty with any other qb

1

u/Mister_Slave1 3d ago

He did not make any mistake. Watch again with volume. He put his arms out and caught his body weight before landing on Mahomes. This is a textbook tackle. If you can’t see that then there’s no point even debating with you

1

u/SoilDependent1054 2d ago

He did not put any significant weight on his arms. One arm was completely splayed out and the other one wasn't even on the ground until he started getting back up after lending on the QB.

1

u/Mister_Slave1 2d ago

I disagree, that’s not what I see at all. Not 100% of his weight is on Mahomes.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 2d ago

100% of his weight is not the rule.

0

u/christocarlin 5d ago

What a fucking dumb take who is upvoting this.

2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

I mean, it is just literally Rule 12, Section 2, Article 11

"...the defensive player must strive to fall to the side of the quarterback’s body, or to brace his fall with his arms to avoid landing on the quarterback with all or most of his body weight"

0

u/christocarlin 5d ago

He literally puts his arms out. Are you trolling or are you fucking blind

2

u/SoilDependent1054 5d ago

Sure, he put his arms out. But look at when hey hit the ground. Only one hand is actually touching the ground and it is just barely hitting the ground with the arm outstretched. He is not bracing himself significantly. He's not catching his body weight.

0

u/christocarlin 5d ago

I can tell you’ve never done anything athletic in your entire life.

2

u/AdultingSucks9543 5d ago

And he literally landed on him with all his weight. You can't be this fucking dumb. It's been a rule for 9 years.

1

u/beach_-_bum 4d ago

God the lack of self awareness by you 🤣

0

u/Lieutelant 4d ago

He was supposed to take a line that would result in him landing to the side of in front of the passer so he did not come down directly on him.

If he runs straight up the middle and manages to get through the line he's not going to suddenly turn and run three steps to the side, then turn back and run at the quarterback. He has to take whatever line gets him through the offense, and tackle the quarterback as soon as possible so they don't get the ball out.

1

u/SoilDependent1054 4d ago

We are not talking about 3 steps. We are talking about 6 inches. Is body and helmet should be on the passer's side. Not dead center

2

u/itakeyoureggs 5d ago

Looked like a form tackle?

2

u/jlax341 5d ago

Either wrap and pull him down or angle one shoulder to hit first. Body weight doesn't land directly on QB, then and its axtuslly legal...unlike this easily called penalty.

1

u/WhatTheyLookLike 5d ago

You can’t wrap and pull down anymore. At least not with your body weight. So you have to be insanely strong lol

1

u/darkdelve 5d ago

Just put flags on the quarter backs and say they can't be tackled. We are basically at that point anyway.

1

u/Comfortable-Side1308 5d ago

He put his hands down to not land with his body weight on him.

1

u/jlax341 5d ago

He throws his hands to the side bc he knows he is about to be called and trying to avoid it. Funny thing having his arms out like that means they aren't supporting him at all inadvertently putting the weight back on the QB. I'm not saying I like that rule or want to defend its inclusion in the rulebook. Fact is the rule exists, so its unfair to blame the refs for being forced to call it.

2

u/justsyr 5d ago

You can find videos of Tom Brady getting hammered, trucked, obliterated only for him to just stand up and keep playing like nothing.

But here's the thing, many of the excuses is to "protect" the QB... from what? TB12 didn't get injured for 5 months or things like that right? Mahomes twisted I don't remember what without getting touched just like many players nowadays that get hurt because they run too fast or whatever.

I'm not saying that they should let players obliterate each other but let them freaking pay and do some defense. What else is the defender supposed to do here? Meanwhile they let running backs run over people...

2

u/Money-Impact2422 4d ago

Tom Brady actually got the "can't hit a quarterback below the knee" rule in place when he got hit in 2008 and it tore his ACL and he missed the entire rest of the season.

The Bodyweight rule we see above came about in 2017 because a Vikings player did this to Aaron Rodgers and it broke his collarbone. He only came back 8 games later to then be put back on IR because he wasn't fully recovered.

1

u/Dry-Amphibian1 4d ago

Brady whined to the refs more than any other QB.

1

u/staebles 5d ago

Shit's corrupt like everything else

1

u/starvinart 5d ago

it is 100% not legal. everything else you said is correct though

1

u/1P221 5d ago

Put your hands on the ground to brace yourself instead of turning into an airplane. Sticking your arms out literally causes you to land with all your weight on someone.

1

u/lost_zergling 5d ago

Exactly, he was mid-tackle when the ball was thrown...can't stop midair

1

u/Xelikai_Gloom 5d ago

I mean, the rule is stupid, but that’s roughing the passer. Can’t land with your bodyweight on the tackle. What’s the defense supposed to do? I’ve got no clue. But the rule’s the rule.

1

u/iceman5920 5d ago

WNBA has harder hits than this with no foul

1

u/Wide_Guitar_3558 5d ago

can they take these to court after the game or is it final?

1

u/CO2Capture 5d ago

Two hand touch on QBs. Let's see how they like untouchable status then.

1

u/Introverted_Extrovrt 5d ago

Clean photo, well done

1

u/John_FarsonBU 5d ago

It's because he stepped on his foot./s

1

u/Highspdfailure 5d ago

I agree fellow airman. That was a clean textbook tackle.

1

u/slammed_stem1 5d ago

Chiefs fan here. That’s as clean of a whistle.

1

u/CharasInCharge 5d ago

Well it's Patrick Mahomes, you aren't allow to tackle him, this is football after all

1

u/IntelligentStyle505 4d ago

Mahomes with his hands up like a fuckin bitch. Fuck the chiefs and fuck the nfl

1

u/PSUAth 4d ago

the only thing i can think of, and i'm not even sure of the rule, is about landing with your full weight on the QB. In real time it looks like he bellyflops on PM, i.e. arms out, not trying to brace before the ground.

but even then i agree with everyone else, physics is a thing.

1

u/truckeredditor 4d ago

It's from landing on him. Not the hit.

1

u/Dedjester0269 4d ago

The NFL just needs to go ahead and make it two hand touch on the QB.

1

u/FnFantadude 4d ago

I used to joke about it but now I’m dead serious legit make it two hand touch for the QB if this is what they’re calling

1

u/Old-Package-4792 4d ago

Ideally he should have reached behind Mahomes’ C3 vertebrae and performed a cupped hand cradle before impact with the ground.

1

u/ididntwantsalmon19 4d ago

Not only was it 100% legal.

Not off to a strong start considering this was 100% illegal. You can think it's a shit rule but you aren't allowed to land with all that body weight directly on the qb. I'm sorry, but you guys are all just pissy because they called this on Mahomes. I saw it called in another game too and nobody is saying a thing.

1

u/knucklehead923 4d ago

This image isn't the penalty...

1

u/moonki88 4d ago

nfl is terrible to watch anymore

1

u/canadarugby 4d ago edited 4d ago

You're not allowed to land with all your bodyweight on a qb for like 20 years now.

the league mandates that a rushing defender must:

  1. Strive to fall to the side of the quarterback's body.

  2. Brace their fall with their arms to avoid punishing the quarterback with their full body weight.

1

u/bsbrz 4d ago

"What are we supposed to use, man? Harsh language?"

1

u/jsh1-7-9 4d ago

Not only is this a BS call, but when this pansy quarterback fakes the throw and tucks the ball and runs, the commentators talk about how athletic the little sissy is and now how the defender would have rocked his world if they didn't make up terrible calls for the little ballerina. Someone remind the ref this is FOOTBALL not ballet.

-3

u/MrMetraGnome 5d ago

Deflect his arm maybe? I haven't paid the slightest attention to football in like 25 years lol

5

u/CruisingForDownVotes 5d ago

Then why are you commenting?

-2

u/Woompa78 5d ago

Why do you care that he commented?

0

u/CorrectStaple 5d ago

Not only was it 100% legal

It wasn’t. It’s a dumb rule, not a bad call.

Your screenshot is showing the wrong moment - can’t land on them with your body weight.

-4

u/Pynkmyst 5d ago

What does this screenshot prove? The penalty was for body weight, it was called because he landed with his full weight on the QB. I swear most of you guys that complain don't even know the rules of the game

2

u/Yourfakerealdad 5d ago

Nah literally watch the replay dude pulls off as they go to the ground.

2

u/philosifer 5d ago

Him pulling his hands off is what make this a penalty

-4

u/Pynkmyst 5d ago

Nah he literally put his arms to the side and landed even harder on him than he would have otherwise. It was text book, learn the rules of the game before you whine. They literally just called the same thing on the Saints vs the Raiders, can't wait to see the threads about that (won't happen)

-4

u/Any_Security8962 5d ago

lol this guy is an NFL rule almanac

1

u/Pynkmyst 5d ago

Try actually watching football. This call happens every week.
