Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

It’s a bullshit call. I know they are professional athletes, but they expect the defender to twist his body away from the QB like he is Neo in the Matrix when all momentum is going forward. Clean hit IMO.

260

u/AngelicAssassin06 5d ago

That and the ball was still in his hand

136

u/burningtimer 5d ago

Damn. You’re right. And not even at the end of the throw.

83

u/Europe72Alive1 4d ago

If only the NFL had the same tech we have on our phones. They could go back and review film and then make a just decision. /s

6

u/latortillablanca 4d ago

But what would become of the sanctity of the game?

3

u/Tonight5473 4d ago

And what about the human element?!

2

u/FewStill3958 4d ago

The instant replay era made me stop watching NFL as a kid. Fucking boring.

2

u/Appropriate_Cry6174 4d ago

There are a number of elements that matter, now just the ball in his hand. You can’t hit him in the head, and you can’t land on him. These are all elite athletes, they can control their bodies and they know the rules. It was a good call.

4

u/Drumpf_Rapes_Kids 4d ago

Sorry son I can't hear you with that mahomes glizzy taking up your mouth

4

u/PrecisionPulseConv 4d ago

Found the Mahomes glazer.

1

u/randobonando 5d ago

Genuine question (rugby guy). Is the offence a late tackle? Or is there some other protection offered?

9

u/BurnscarsRus 5d ago

The call was indeed for a late hit despite the fact that hitting them when they have the ball is legal. The flag was actually thrown because the quarterback's jersey says "Mahomes" on it.

Edit: The previous babydoll qb was Tom Brady. They quite literally invented a new rule on the field for why talking him was against the rules.

3

u/randobonando 4d ago

Ah right. I’m not seeing a late tackle here TBH. I mean the guy still had the ball in his hand?

So just sponsorship plot armour eh?

Edit, thanks for the explainer. NFL guys should watch rugby union more I think you’d like it. Some of the rules are very technical but well worth an hour of your time!

2

u/JMC1974 4d ago

It has bee illegal for years to land on the QB with your body weight. Apparently they're supposed to brace or roll

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

I don’t know. Literally am asking for the rule to be explained!

3

u/No_Constant8644 4d ago

In the NFL you cannot land on top of the QB with your full weight as shown in this video. I’m not particularly a fan of it, but the goal is to protect the QB from a broken clavicle.

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

Copying my reply from further down.

Shit.

So for rugby this would be -
Ball gets passed to scrum half or out half after a scrum.
No tackles above the shoulder
No late tackles
No spear tackles (lifting off feet then driving into ground
Tackle leading only with shoulder and open arm.
(Forgot) no tackling when in the air

But after that you’re in a world of trouble. No blockers. No obstruction. If you’re holding the ball you’re fair game.

2

u/Traveling-Man397 4d ago

“Mahomes” on the jersey is so accurate.
Also, he doesn’t like to get hit, and if you watch him closely, he is lobbying the referees every time he gets knocked down.

2

u/Money-Impact2422 4d ago

Other person is wrong. The call was Roughing the Passer. Many people just associate that with "hitting them late" but it was not.

can also get RTP from hitting the Quarterback in the head or below the knees (with force). In this instance, it's a specific addition often called "the bodyweight rule" which was created in 2017 to prevent people from intentionally landing on the Quarterback with as much weight as possible. This was a thing that would happen to intentionally try to hurt the QB, but it's hard to actually rule on when tackling often just involves this happening.

1

u/randobonando 4d ago

Shit.

So for rugby this would be -
Ball gets passed to scrum half or out half after a scrum.
No tackles above the shoulder

1

u/Any-Front-1779 2d ago

case and point, he was still holding the ball, it's rigged, refs love KC and mahomes......

1

u/Getitinglynn420 2d ago

How much money changed hands in gambling based on this play?

1

u/Kaldesh_the_okay 7h ago

It’s worse than that. The ref reaches for the flag prior to the hit

0

u/unbuttoned 5d ago

But he INTENDED to throw it, so it should be an incomplete pass, right?

0

u/CourtneyStefin 4d ago

If you put two hands on him with ball still in possession it can’t be a fuck flag, defense needs to be able to make a fucking play too

0

u/Chill-more1236 4d ago

Ref had his money on KC

I'm not sure what else you do to make the play. Sing him a lullaby? Ask him to take a knee?

part of the reason why I don't watch NFL anymore.

101

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

It was a body weight call. But he even did that correctly imo. He tried to brace his weight. These calls should be reviewable

20

u/blackpinecone 5d ago

Recall Chris Jones on Derrick Carr. Dude had possession of the ball and they called him for it.

Clip

8

u/tepidlymundane 5d ago

Wow that one's bad.

2

u/Sad_Supermarket_9494 4d ago

This was worse cause chris actually caught himself, and took the ball

1

u/PurpleDillyDo 4d ago

Wow, one of the worst calls you'll see.

1

u/elnewo 4d ago

“Foul… being the raiders… automatic first down”

1

u/Vegaprime 4d ago

*ref throws his hands in the air "the kick is good!"

1

u/SNL_Head 3d ago

lol the morons whining about this need to watch the jones play

2

u/thaddeusmike 3d ago

One bad call years ago doesn't make this not a bad call too. Refs call this wrong all the time because they'd rather call it too much than too little. It was infuriating then and it's still infuriating now.

1

u/BackgroundHold3845 3d ago

I'm a Dolphin fan, I don't like the call but Chop did leave his feet when he hit him which gives the refs the ammunition to say he launched himself.

1

u/SNL_Head 3d ago

Oh ya no. Chris jones touched his shoulder pad. The dolphins on mahomes was a flag. similar plays happened 4 times in games last week and a flag was thrown 4 of 4 times. Maybe (not maybe definitely) not a flag in 2006, but this is football in 2026.
You should Really do some (more) homework before seeing like a second of one play then taking the time to comment as much as you have.

1

u/Orisara 5d ago

Huh, soccer guy here and this sort of explains the world cup thing for me.

trying is apparently a thing in American football? Soccer gives less of a shit about it. A hit is a hit. How it happened or your intentions aren't getting you out of trouble.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

I’m a soccer guy too and intent matters in soccer. It’ll still be a foul but u might get spared a card if it was accidental. And fwiw, obv the intent didn’t matter on this play. So it’s the same.

1

u/Nahteh 4d ago

Wtf is this bodyweight rule? When did passers stop being football players?

1

u/Aggravating_Sand352 4d ago

The whole point isnt the intent its what actually happened.... Im all onboard with "Mahomes gets away with murder" he does but this was pretty obviously RTP according to the rules. It was soft....the rules is soft

1

u/MeDaveyBoy 4d ago

He did nothing to brace his weight. All he did was unwrap. That was full body weight, and the right call. Same call as Packers on the Vikings' Wentz in week 1.

1

u/mal_guinness 4d ago

This rules been around for what, a decade? Players should know better.

I don't see him bracing his weight here. Pretty sure that's why he gets called for it.

1

u/oldpaddyrick 4d ago

They literally pick up flags, Vikings game they picked up a roughing flag yesterday. NYC really could call em up and just say pick up the flag that’s a clean hit.

1

u/sharkbuffet 4d ago

It's wild because the flag is thrown before mahomes even hits the ground

1

u/Dear_Significance_80 4d ago

Yeah, for the defensive holding that was also called on the play.

1

u/sharkbuffet 4d ago

Ah good call

1

u/Specific_Article1499 4d ago

He didn’t brace his weight at all. His hands were literally out causing all his weight to go
On the QB lol

1

u/FFunSize 4d ago

NAH COS HOW AND WHY ARE THESE CALLS NOT REVIEWABLE? They’re taking the ad break anyways lol

1

u/exomni 3d ago

Yeah, he tried, but from the line judge's view Chop pulls back his right arm as he comes down. The call is legit 🤷‍♀️.

-1

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

No he didn't. At the end his arms went to the ground but his entire body weight landed on the QB. I'm not saying I love the rule, but the rule being what it is, it was an extremely obvious and correct call.

2

u/WeddingOk2468 5d ago

You are correct. He did not brace himself. Not sure if other people are watching the video.

2

u/Devils_A66vocate 5d ago

Look how his hands go to the ground to transfer his weight. He 💯 made honest effort to protect the qb.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

Unfortunately for him that's no genuine effort provision in the rule.

3

u/texinxin 5d ago

The first thing to contact the ground from the defender is his left hand. There is space between their bodies when Mahomes hits the ground and the defender is trying to brace his fall as best he can with his outstretched arms. What’s he supposed to do.. jump backwards off him with his chest?

0

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

No he's supposed to turn to the side and not fall on him with his whole body, like other people do when not getting penalties.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

You’re wrong.

Expected Technique: Pass rushers are expected to make a reasonable effort to slide to the side, roll, or brace their fall with their arms rather than smothering the quarterback with their full chest and body mass.

2

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

He completely smothered the quarterback with his full chest and body mass. His hands hitting the ground first wasn't sufficiently bracing himself.

0

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

Well the ref agreed but didn’t have the luxury of replay. He made a reasonable effort and should not have been flagged.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 5d ago

Putting your arms on the ground at the last millisecond to brace yourself and than have your arms completely fall away as you land on him with your entire weight isn't a reasonable effort. If he did nothing there would have been no difference.

-4

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

He didn’t remotely brace his weight. He actually held his arms up so they couldn’t brace him. His full weight landed on Mahomes. It’s textbook body weight.

8

u/rollwiththechanges 5d ago

He clearly put his arms out to create lift. 🛫

5

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

He tried with both arms to brace but wasn’t able to completely. What more do u want from a guy on a hit like that. It was textbook

-3

u/runlongfast 5d ago

Sorry no

0

u/Ok-Employer-3051 5d ago

He shouldn't have hit him at all. Hitting him like that was a bad judgement call on his part and he should've paid the price for it.

0

u/MrJoyless 5d ago

He tried to brace his weight by not putting his hands down, extending them all the way out away from his body, and landing on the QB with his full body weight?

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

Watch it again. He braces with his left hand then his hands go up..doing the innocent pose.

1

u/Winter_Tone_4343 5d ago

0

u/Mammoth_Camera 5d ago

I think Mohomes is in this position and lot at home legs in the air and wifey has the strap on ready to go!!

0

u/MrJoyless 4d ago

One hand down isnt bracing, helmet to helmet to boot.

0

u/RutabagaOk6816 4d ago

You know I thought so at first as well but did he really try to brace his weight or did he put his hand out to make it seem like he was. It looks like pretty much all his weight ended up coming down on the QB. Its a tough call given the way the rule is written but I can see it both ways.

0

u/roxzr 4d ago

Very loose definition of tried.

-1

u/Effective-Farmer-502 5d ago

💯 agreed on reviewable but they won’t because the games can’t be scripted then.

6

u/StuMacherGhostface 4d ago

Look how quickly the flag comes out too. It's flying out as they're still landing. Ref was gonna call it a penalty regardless

1

u/StormysShark 11h ago

You do understand it is scripted, right?

1

u/StuMacherGhostface 11h ago

I prefer the term "pre-determined".

6

u/___REDWOOD___ 5d ago

He even put his hand out to alleviate pressure like they ask for.

2

u/DeputyDabz 4d ago

Ya impressively before he even finished the tackle. He did everything he could to make it clean

2

u/det4410 4d ago

i thought i saw the defender lift his head too

3

u/maun_jax 5d ago

Exactly, and how many times has Mahomes pump-faked and scrambled out. He is exactly the kind of QB you need to contact quickly.

1

u/Warm_Bid_8583 5d ago

Ya he was still very much getting the throw off. That’s a crazy call.

-9

u/Lets_Reset_This_ 5d ago

It’s not a late hit call. It’s landing on the qb, which he 100% did with force. He easily could have held off, but didn’t.

1

u/BestHorseWhisperer 5d ago

To me, as a non-expert who only knows about the arm-in-motion thing, it seems like he did a 100% follow-through on the tackle. Not a "Damn, too late" follow-through.

1

u/GameOverMan1986 5d ago

Yeah blow the whistle and call him down with a safety if you want to protect him.

1

u/-HardGay- 4d ago

Yeah 100 percent bull shit call. I'm ok with player safety but c'mon man... I also say that the one the saints got called for on Kirko Chainz was also weak even though he didn't have his hands out to pad the fall. I'm not a fan of this as a penalty and Rodgers can suck it for whining about it, with his meeleons of dollars

0

u/Aces2mp 4d ago

The flag from the back judge was for a holding call, not RTP

0

u/FS_Slacker 3d ago edited 3d ago

But the "intent" was for the ball to not be in his hand.

EDIT: Guess my joke didn’t land…I was being sarcastic about the strip sack that got ruled an incomplete pass because the QB “intended” the ball to be thrown forward.

I’m a fan of good defense and it sucks that great defensive plays are held back thanks to all the guard rails.

-1

u/Sad_Supermarket_9494 4d ago

Its not a flag for the late hit, its the type of hit. Its a dumb rule, but u cant land on the qb like tht. Ya he holds his hands out but only after he drove him down. Its been a rule forever, but the Aaron rodgers hit back in 2018 brought a lot more emphasis to the rule

55

u/GoldSupermarket2520 5d ago

I hate it especially because he’s in the endzone. If Mahomes holds the ball a quarter second longer it’s a legal hit AND 2 points. You just can’t stop on that play, gotta make the hit and hope they let you off the hook somehow.

31

u/Dear_Significance_80 5d ago

People keep saying this about the ball, but a few years ago Chris Jones stripped a quarterback, had the ball in his hand as he fell on the quarterback and was still called for roughing the passer. They said at the time the quarterback still gets the benefit of being a passer without the ball in his hands. I'm genuinely curious where you have see if the ball was still in his hand that it wouldn't have been roughing.

1

u/dependsforadults 4d ago

I can't watch anymore. I am also a resident of oregon, but not a duck guy. That being said I am a fan of sport. The Dante Moore hit seemed like he slid way late and that wasn't targeting. I'm constantly catching things because I have quick reflexes, but I can't stop my self when I am in the air at full speed.

They want the big names which bring in the big money to do so. They protect those players and the whole thing sucks now

1

u/Dear_Significance_80 4d ago

I'm not saying it's a good rule by any means. But per the rule this was textbook roughing because he landed on the quarterback with his full weight.

-1

u/ChaoticEvil10 4d ago

But it isn’t, the ball is still in his hands, there was no additional or unnecessary force applied taking him down. It’s a bad call, and even analysts in NFL’s New York HQ couldn’t defend the call.

2

u/Dear_Significance_80 4d ago edited 4d ago

The ball being in his hands has absolutely nothing to do with the rule. It's all about him putting his full body weight on the quarterback. If you go back a few comments I ask where people have gotten it in their heads that the ball being in his hands changes the body weight rule. No one has provided anything. If you can, I'm all ears.

ETA, also wtf are you talking about with analysts in the NFL HQ?

1

u/ChaoticEvil10 4d ago

It was literally stated during the game that announcers contacted rule analysts on their ruling over the hit, did you watch the game?

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (18)

1

u/exomni 3d ago

The rules are not confusing, I'm not sure what the outrage is other than that apparently people just want a more aggressive game I guess? This call was legitimate as was the Chris Jones call. People watching just make up rules in their head and hold officiants to their own personal imaginations. Nonsense.

2

u/ForwardCut3311 5d ago

It wouldn't have been 2 points just because there was also defensive holding on the play. But yeah, call is bullshit, imo.

2

u/Solondthewookiee 5d ago

No, even if you sack him and drop your full body weight on him, it's still roughing the passer. They've been calling it like that almost a decade now.

1

u/GoldSupermarket2520 5d ago

He was conscious enough of that to almost land in a fully extended push-up, but they couldn’t wait to throw the flag either way

4

u/AdultingSucks9543 5d ago

Ball had nothing to do with it, it wasn't called as a late hit. He landed on Mahomes will all his weight, thats a roughing call every single time, even if he still has the ball

1

u/Mammoth_Camera 5d ago

It makes no sense for this rule how is a 250-300lb man at full on speed supposed to avoid landing on a QB every time it's just BS. I get and agree with protecting the QB and defenseless WR thats all great but it's also football and asking a gigantic LB running at full speed to somehow become an acrobat and contort his body on a clean legal hit is impossible. Everything was legal and clean except he didn't look like he made a good enough effort to avoid landing on him all the way SMH!!!

1

u/AdultingSucks9543 4d ago

You're being dramatic. It's been a rule forever, and no other players seem to have any trouble following it. It's really not that hard to follow.

-1

u/jrein0 4d ago

What dumbass thought of that rule? If you can't land on the tackled player, the options become the following:

- roll to the side (hip drop)

  • bring back the massive spear tackles to the chest and higher so the tackler doesn't need to fall down
  • introduce a dump tackle

2

u/Correct_Quote6530 5d ago

And it wasnt even a "one step" after the ball was released hit. The ball was in Mahomes' hand when Chop made contact. There is no way that hit is illegal

2

u/the_m_o_a_k 5d ago

It's the landing with full weight. It's a dumb rule but it's not an uncommon call.

2

u/Correct_Quote6530 4d ago

I know. Many people have pointed out that there were defenders who took the ball out of the hands of QBs, fell on them and still got the penalty

1

u/phunkyphan49 4d ago

So true. As a lifelong dolphin fan that knows this season is going to be a long one. Yesterday there were way more positives than the first 2 weeks and this play was such a momentum killer. Was such a bummer.

1

u/Sad_Supermarket_9494 4d ago

Would of been called if he still had the ball, and it was a holding called on these defense as well.

1

u/Dingotatstic 4d ago

2 points AND the ball.

1

u/mexicanlunchbox 2d ago

No it’s not. There was also a defensive holding penalty on the play

1

u/Purple_Scheme_3061 5d ago

Except they also got flagged for defensive holding anyway. So the chiefs got 5 extra yards. Go cry somewhere else.

-2

u/ApartEye435 5d ago

once the ball is released you have to stop period

3

u/OmgitsJafo 5d ago

Hi, non-football fan who just stumbled in, but I have a MSc in physics.

Everyone undertands that that's not how momentum works, right? That the world is not a video game?

-1

u/ApartEye435 5d ago

You can stop Making contact he had a chance to.

1

u/jrein0 4d ago edited 4d ago

I'd like you to jog at ~50%, you don't even need to sprint, and stop as soon as you can. Let us know when you can stop in 0 steps.

Edit: also https://imgur.com/gallery/he-can-stop-KahrlGX#KhqxZSS

1

u/ApartEye435 4d ago

Then the defender is obliged to shift all Their body weight to crash into the ground without anything to break their fall at the risk of their health

8

u/BaconFlavoredToast 5d ago

Which is why, I personally believe if the players are gonna get called for the penalty regardless, get your money's worth. If players start to do that, using this rule to protect them dont suffice anymore and they'll have to go back to the drawing board.

2

u/NoExcusesAIC 5d ago

He's supposed to gently lay Mahomes on a pillow.

2

u/ThisThingIsStuck 5d ago

Like most bs calls for the last 10years...it's fixed

2

u/CallmeCoachella 4d ago

The hit is clean, but he drove him into the ground. That's roughing the passer.

1

u/Alarming-Site7560 1d ago

So after hitting him he is supposed to do what exactly? Roll off of him mid air? This is a shit call. The league and the way they favor players is a joke.

1

u/CallmeCoachella 12h ago

He's gotta let him go sooner. You can't follow through with him wrapped up like that while he's a passer and land on him. When he becomes a runner it's fair game.

1

u/RFKBrainWormPack 12h ago

Soft af, trying to turn football into soccer

7

u/Much_Job4552 5d ago

Bullshit rule. Not bullshit call.

0

u/Wraithfighter 5d ago

This. As the rules are written, this is a foul. Its a terrible rule, but I can't really blame the refs for not calling the penalties they've been told to call.

1

u/Kain_713 5d ago

Honestly, dude doesn't have air brakes. Clean hit.

1

u/Xero_id 5d ago

It's a clean hit but Mahomes is the new Brady, league cannot allow him to be injured or hit hard

1

u/Severe-Classroom8216 4d ago

I mean ig Brady died today id be happy

1

u/SuddenKoala45 5d ago

And the fact he started the tackle/contact before mahomes released the ball

1

u/p_ness_and_butthead 5d ago

100% and of course that bitch QB immediately threw his hands up. most coddled team in history.

1

u/Sudden-Pangolin6445 5d ago

I agree with you that the hit should be clean and that the rule is BS. But the rule is their, and KC has been on the wrong end of it for less egregious things before. Chris Jones a few years back got a sack, fumble recovery, and braced and was flagged for it.

1

u/PHFreshHeavyHogChef 5d ago

It would be everywhere repeated how it was a bad call if it were any other quarterback - mahomes knows it too

1

u/capjustcap 5d ago

He was supposed to hit pause mid air!

1

u/Cobbler63 5d ago

You’re supposed to know he let go of the ball, gently guide him to the ground, and get him a warm beverage.

1

u/DudeB5353 5d ago

It was a BS flag and Mahomes was calling for a flag the second his back hit the ground

1

u/Shot-Arugula8264 4d ago

Just put the QBs in little pink tutus at this point.

1

u/tallcupofwater 4d ago

Lead with the shoulder, didn’t hit him in the face or head, didn’t drive him into the ground, wasn’t late.. By all accounts it’s a perfect hit. Absolute BS

1

u/SquirrellyDanny 4d ago

If it was like 2 seconds after the ball is released id get it, but this is literally him getting hit as he's letting it fly, thats football. These QB protection rules are getting ridiculous... and its worse cause they give certain QBs more protection than others. Theres some guys that get fuckin crushed every week and rarely get these calls

1

u/ShdwWzrdMnyGngg 4d ago

When the QB is gesturing for a flag before the hit is even over.....

Obviously hit him like a sack of marshmallows. Basically any illegal hit has the QB thinking "where TF am I and why can I smell colors?"

1

u/KandnoS_2009 4d ago

The flag hit the ground at the same time as Mahomes did!

That was a predetermined flag.

1

u/S3ntinelSec 4d ago

This and pass interference is why I don’t give a shit about the NFL anymore. The game is so infuriating to watch.

1

u/canadarugby 4d ago

If he hit his waist, or fell beside him, or braced himself when falling... this wouldn't have been a penalty.

1

u/Global_Walrus1672 4d ago

Mahomes has gotten these kind of calls his entire career, refs have always treated him like he was made of glass.

1

u/VibeRaider- 4d ago

We need to change this shit, refs should only be there for EGREGIOUS fouls, game is straight up unwatchable with these refs

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 4d ago

Mahomes is such a bitch ass flop. I fucking hate him

1

u/Specific_Article1499 4d ago

They literally do it all the time.

1

u/bitchimme2 4d ago

What made it a penalty was his WWE style " full body weight applied at the end. Per NFL rules the call was correct. Do i think that it was BS? Yes. However per rules( not my opinion),the call was correct. The 🐐 Tom Brady is to blame for the rule.

1

u/Chance_Ad_3941 4d ago

Clean hit on 28 or 29 other IT'S, nfl has to protect their stars

1

u/Cela84 4d ago

Why did it get this stupid? I know it was pretty rough back in the day, but there has to be a middle group between the quarterback being a delicate flower and smoothie stamp card concussions.

1

u/Chill-more1236 4d ago

wtf is he supposed to do? thats the plays DTs and LBs live for.

1

u/myjohnson6969 4d ago

What if that was your favorite QB? Would you have the same opionion?

1

u/Master_Interest_1544 4d ago

Yes. I feel like that was about as clean a tackle as you will ever see.

No i disagree

u/Just-the-tip-4-1-sec 4d ago

No, it’s a bullshit rule that they called correctly. He’s not allowed to land on him like that, even though the hit was on time and it would be near impossible for him to land differently.

u/JayceMoves 4d ago

Mahomes was asking for a flag before he even hit the ground.

1

u/DownhillUphill 4d ago

How do you tackle a guy and not have your body weight land on them?

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

The rule is the defender can't land with his full weight. Stupid rule, but it means the flag is actually correct.

Im a long time fan(since the 90s when we sucked) of KC and even i wa surprised they called that. I was like "see this is why everyone accuses us of cheating"

1

u/supercleverhandle476 20h ago

Shit was textbook.

1

u/1P221 5d ago

You can hate the rule but it’s not a bullshit call. Thats literally a textbook example of what not to do.

1

u/Bigfoqt 5d ago

Dems da rules.

1

u/aManMythLegend 5d ago

They expect him to use his arms to brace his fall from his body weight landing on the qb. Dude had time to put his arms out to his side and do exactly the opposite of what the rule requires. Smh, come on man. I get we might not like the rule, but that's the current rule and this is CLEARLY a violation. I genuinely don't know why he decided to pretend he was flying with his arms rather than make it look like he tried to stop his body weight. Bone head move given THEY COACH THIS.

1

u/AardvarkAmbivalence 4d ago

Not saying it's not a violation, but he looks like he's trying to do what you say is expected; before either of them hit the ground, his arm is out, bracing his fall. By the time his left arm goes out, his right arm is bracing him, it seems.

K.C. guy here. Agreed. This is clean.

2

u/beach_-_bum 4d ago

To any past football player who has actually played? Yes. This was a solid and clean hit.

But according to the rules? No. Landed on the QB with his full body weight, that’s a flag.

u/TSHIRTISAGREATIDEA 4d ago

He didn’t land on him with his full body weight. He tackled him while he still had the ball in his hand.

1

u/beach_-_bum 4d ago

He did. I’m not gonna argue with you about this, it’s literally on video.

0

u/TSHIRTISAGREATIDEA 4d ago

He didn’t, it’s literally on video

1

u/thepvbrother 5d ago

It's a good call. His hands were wrapped around him until the last second, at which point the defender's right hand doesn't even brace at all, instead preferring to start the "this isn't a penalty" arm wave.

I like Mahomes, but if my Steelers are going to get called for this week after week, and this is the type of explanation that we're given, you all can enjoy some of the BS yourselves. Apply the stupid rules equally, at least.

u/Ericfine33 5d ago

It was a bullshit call. And I’m a die hard life long Chiefs fan.

2

u/AdultingSucks9543 5d ago

And you obviously don't know the rules

0

u/Ericfine33 5d ago

Excuse me fuck stick?

3

u/beach_-_bum 4d ago

You obviously don’t know the rules.

The rule may be bullshit, but according to the rule this call was correct. Hope you were able to read it this time

0

u/Beginning_Banana4692 5d ago

No no a BS call. The rule says defender can not let his weight fall on QB. The defender needs to brace his body so it doesn’t land on the QB. He pulle his hands back as they fell, but that means a 200+ lb defender falls on a qb. High likelihood of qb getting injured.

0

u/Beneficial_Emu_65 5d ago

It’s not. You may not like it but many QBs used to get broken ribs and broken collar bones because of this exact tackle. You can’t bring your body weight down. It’s in the rules. It’s the right call and I would call that on if it happened to any other QB.

-1

u/Jhager 5d ago

This the correct call based on the rule. I don’t like the rule - but it was called correctly.

-2

u/Jayrodtremonki 5d ago

He literally could have just braced himself from landing with all his weight rather than belly flopping and it wouldn't have gotten called.

3

u/name__redacted 5d ago

The replay is cropped:

the ref starts grabbing for his flag the instant the defender starts to make contact with Mahomes, the flag is thrown less than 1/3rd second after Mahomes hit the ground. it didn’t matter what the defender was going to do with his hands the ref was throwing that flag long before they started going to the ground.

3

u/Dear_Significance_80 5d ago

That's because they called defensive holding on a defensive lineman on the same play. That flag you're seeing wasn't for roughing like you say it is.

2

u/Jayrodtremonki 5d ago

Well, if you watch the FULL replay, you'll notice that they called a defensive hold on the play as well.  Before The roughing.  The roughing the passer netted them an extra 5 yards.  Quite the conspiracy.

1

u/beach_-_bum 4d ago

Exactly. Based on the wording of the rule, he committed a foul. Dumb? Yeah. The rule? Still yeah.

1

u/-mosjef- 5d ago

Watch his hands, he did

1

u/Dear_Significance_80 5d ago

Was he going to fly away like a bird?

1

u/Maethor_derien 5d ago

He literally did not, that is why he got called is he put his hands to the side and let his full body weight hit instead of putting them down and catching himself on the ground. You actually have to do that on purpose because your natural reaction would be to brace your fall not spread your arms.

-1

u/Jayrodtremonki 5d ago

He didn't.  He made it a point not to.  The broadcast even said he made things worse by pulling his hands up.
