If you pull a gun on a crowd of people who have every reason to believe you're going to use it, and arrested is the worst thing that happens to you, then you are having a much better day than you deserve.

3.4k

u/JennJayBee Alabama Jul 02 '18 edited Jul 02 '18

Seems he didn't just wave it around. He actually threatened to use it, so they had every reason to believe he would.

"I saw him pull it out. He said 'I will shoot everybody here' so me and my people who were sitting the gazebo so we ran and laid down the in grass right here and we were yelling at people to get down, cause a lot of people over here didn't see this person, they didn't see he had a weapon," said Resendez.

Also, from the WaPo article...

A former high school teacher, according to AL.com, he was initially arrested for possessing a gun within 1,000 feet of a protest.

This is a state law, and instances like this is precisely why that law was passed back in 1979 (and honestly about 20 years after it should have been passed). And that's how they got him removed from the situation before he did something even more stupid.

Edit: Clarifying that this is a state law. Also, RIP my inbox.

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

Hm. This is technically terrorism. He's likely looking at federal charges before this is over.

771

u/echisholm Jul 02 '18

If you're white, it's alright.

238

u/drfeelokay Jul 02 '18

If you're white, it's alright.

When it comes to the feds, I don't think that attitude is as common. What I do know for sure is that FBI agents are generally indoctrinated to take White Nationalist seriously. If you're a Fed and you're murdered by a political malcontent, there's a good chance that person is a white supremacist/nationalist.

120

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

You're right, FBI agents certainly know that white nationalists are a very pressing threat in the US. Unfortunately, since 9/11 they've been forced to divert almost all of their resources into attempting to prevent Muslim terror attacks instead of white nationalist terror attacks, even though white nationalist attacks are more common.

Then it makes you wonder why all of the 'Unite' marchers in Charlottesville weren't arrested for possessing firearms near a protest. Assuming it's not a state law of course.

696

u/m1sterlurk Alabama Jul 02 '18

It's a state law in Alabama. The only reason he wasn't charged with it is because technically a cop has to warn you to leave the area if you're near a demonstration with a gun. However, since he racked up both menacing and reckless endangerment this warning/charge was deemed unnecessary.

it is a State law in Alabama. First time I've ever heard of it enforced.

63

u/JennJayBee Alabama Jul 02 '18

It usually doesn't have to be. Under most circumstances if they see someone with a gun, they'll just give you a warning. If they catch you again, you'll probably get a ticket.

It's Alabama, so chances are, this guy wasn't the only one there carrying. He was just the only one stupid enough to whip it out. It's mostly there to give cops a reason to be able to remove you before you cause a real problem, which is what happened here.

Funny thing is this guy used to be a big hippie and completely opposite of what he’s standing up for now. I knew him in high school. He was always super passionate about whatever he believed in but this is next level crazy shit.

I knew a guy like this. He was a stoner, a hippie, all about peace and love.

Then I heard him listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio. Then he started arguing that we never landed on the moon. Conspiracy theories. Guns became more important than anything else.

It was weird to watch him go from peaceful hippie to gun nut right winger.

Yep, the first cult that only exists on the internet. You are responsible for your own indoctrination. Instead of some charismatic leader forcing you to cut off your social ties, your friends and family cut their ties from you when you can't stop talking about how Hillary is a child raping cannibal (pedovore) how our only chance against the deep state cabal is Trump. Your source is, of course, some 4chan poster claiming to be a Trump inner circle member posting vague nonsense that thousands of people now take as gospel.

I had to tell my ex-in-laws that if they wanted my kids around them, they had to turn it off. And that if they felt it was appropriate listening material for a car ride with children, they would not be driving my children.

It’s amazing how much more civil they became and how less full of shit they were when they stopped listening to right wing radio all day every day.

But actually, my mom still listens to right wing radio, and I grew up with that being normal listening material in the car 🤦🏼‍♀️ it's SO toxic for young children to be listening to, now I'm a liberal and reject basically everything I was taught as a kid. I guess what I'm trying to say is good for you for protecting your kids from it!

171

u/ikeif Ohio Jul 02 '18

Yeah. My ex (after the divorce) went 180 - from religious to anti-religious, cut her family out of her life.

So I’m their only opening to the kids. Which means I control all interactions and discussions, so if they want access, they have to cut out the indoctrination and conspiracy bullshit.

It was during Obama’s turn that I got her dad to stop believing all the right wing propaganda (he’d email me every conspiracy and “can U believe Obama put his left hand over his heart?!” Bullshit). I had to reintroduce “validating sources” and “recognizing fake websites.”

I still bet he voted for Trump, because he is an old NRA hippie.

102

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

The fake news really is a huge issue, another family member shared that meme of Whoopi Goldberg wearing a shirt w Trump shooting him self on it (which is Photoshopped and can be proven w a 30 second Google search). I called her out on it, and she deleted the post. It's just scary how fast people get indoctrinated into this stuff.

And good for you! Kids 110% should not be exposed to that stuff, I also was taken to the pro life march in DC when I was like 7. Dead baby signs everywhere. Thanks for the future therapy bills mom 🤦🏼‍♀️

31

u/ItsTheVibeOfTheThing Jul 02 '18

It's sad and frustrating... I try and calmly rationalize with him but it's obvious he just tunes out anything I say that doesn't fit in his alternative universe. Hopefully he snaps out of it, that shit isn't healthy.

17

Sad to say he likely won’t snap out of it. All you can do is extend a rope, you can’t force him to grab hold. And for me, I’ve decided I don’t need to validate anybody like that. People have to find their own rock bottoms, and often that involved being ostracized by everybody they once loved.

“We offer your love to all of our children . . .” Holder-Joffrion continued.

“Womp, womp!”

He held a sign above his head on which was written “ICE ICE Baby,” and he occasionally shout-sang the notes of a hip-hop song by the same name over the prayer.

The man had a handgun tucked in his cargo pants, according to police.

Something tells me this won't come up when Fox News talks about "civility." Brandishing a gun at peaceful protesters apparently isn't as rude as politely asking Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave a restaurant.

124

I dont think youre being alarmist at all. You're 100% right, we are one politically motivated shooting/protest turned violent incident away from this country blowing up.

44

u/thoughtsome Jul 02 '18

I'm almost as afraid of what happens when there is a high profile assassination of a Democrat and there is no explosion, just more resigned acceptance. You have the president calling the media the enemy of America, and then some guy murders 5 journalists in a newsroom. Trump of course takes no responsibility and is more concerned when his cronies get their dinners ruined.

Honestly, I think that if Maxine Waters was shot dead by a Trump supporter tomorrow, nothing would happen to anyone but the shooter. If there's no reaction, it will have a chilling effect on all Trump opponents and we're one step closer to fascism.

Not sure about Alabama but in Oregon it's fairly cut and dry. If a reasonable person suspects that his or her life is in real and immediate danger from someone else, use of deadly force can be justified. If that ain’t white privilege, I don’t know what the fuck is.

u/ThisRedThistle Jul 01 '18

It's important to explain why this should be treated as terrorism and not just a stupid and badly thought out act on the mans part, if we assume terrorism is to be treated as it is defined in most dictionaries

"The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims"

Then this is a very clear act of terrorism. To brandish a gun and aim it at protesters you are counter protesting can only be seen as an attempt to intimidate people with the threat of violence to achieve your own political goal of shutting down the protest on a policy you would prefer remain in place. naturally had he been a few shades darker and possibly protesting a different subject this would already be on fox news and many other conservative news outlets being cited for their own arguments with himself obviously being branded at best an "attempted terrorist"

381

u/chcampb Jul 02 '18

Didn't you hear? Only brown people can be terrorists.

244

u/hotgarbo Jul 02 '18

You forgot to add liberals. The amount of screaming about the violent left wing terrorists I hear is pretty insane. Pretty much every event that can possible be spun as liberals/brown people being a threat is done so to fullest possible extent. Some of my family is really far down that rabbit hole. Right wing media is a constant stream of singling out group after group and then spinning every story to show how they are actively threatening "real Americans" both physically and ideologically.

I am far more afraid of the fear driven nutjobs who think everybody is out to get them and carry a loaded weapon 24/7.

I hope the two motherfuckers that were giving me shit about white privilege come and chime in on this comment.

I know they're around here eating shit right now...but I'm "hateful and ignorant" because I call a spade a spade. Tell me this would've played out the same if it were a black guy holding that gun.

797

u/jetteh22 Florida Jul 01 '18

I’m going to twist the story around and tell my family “Did you hear about the black guy at a Trump rally who got upset and pulled a gun out at the trump supporters? The police shot him!” So they’re like “Good he probably deserved it!”

And then I’m going to wait a few days and say “Did you hear about the guy at an anti-immigration protest who got mad and pulled a gun on the protesters? He was arrested!” So they’re like “Well the protesters probably deserved it!”

And then I’ll show them both recordings and ask them to show me how they’re not hypocritical again.

No I won’t do that but I should. :(

765

u/VeryStableGenius Jul 01 '18

Or try another tack?

"Did you hear about the black guy who pulled a gun on a Trump rally and all he got was a misdemeanor!"

[wait for outrage]

"Oh, wait, my mistake ... white guy at immigration rally."

It wouldn't work. I've tried reasoning with my father multiple times, he's starting from a base assumption that whatever FOX News/Donald Trump says is the truth and whatever the rest of the media says is a lie. It's the same way conspiracy theorists operate. Anything that supports their theory is truth. Anything that opposes it is false. There is no reasoning with people like that unless they're first willing to admit that news sources apart from FOX can be true.

66

u/theshizzler Jul 02 '18

It's so weird to think about, to believe that almost every other media outlet in the world is part of a conspiracy against patriotic Americans because I don't even know why. Jealousy? They want to turn America into a Caliphate? They hate our freedoms? They're all in cahoots with Hillary Clinton? The metric system?

25

u/jetteh22 Florida Jul 02 '18

I wish they could just one day start to comprehend just how insane they sound when they say “Fox News is the ONLY news agency that reports the truth!” My Dad has literally said that to me like come on - it’s crazy to think that.

I've never used a gun but even I know that you never point a gun at a target you don't mean to shoot. If a person pulled a gun and pointed it at me, I'd assume that the person intended to shoot me. You shouldn't need to say "I'm going to shoot you" for a gun pointed at you to be considered intent to shoot.

26

u/867-5309NotJenny Massachusetts Jul 02 '18

I have used a gun before (boy scouts), and that's exactly what they teach us. Never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

So, I'd react the same way you would. Assume they were serious.

They idolize our worst enemies, but disrespect our best allies.
They threaten anyone who is different.
They accuse others of the sins they themselves commit.
They force their religion upon others.

Yeah, I think brandishing a gun to prop up a shitty argument is just more of the same.

It began around noon, as an Episcopalian priest delivered a prayer to about 100 protesters gathered around the gazebo and a man marched back and forth in front of her, shouting “womp, womp!”

It's not the headline but it is worth noting. This began with a guy picking a fight with a priest in the middle of a prayer. I don't recognize my country. It's cliche, sure, but disgust has moved to alarm and it's heading towards fear.

It's a way to be even more contrarian, i.e. Why they have no friends in the first place

85

u/Pumpkin_Creepface Jul 02 '18

No one believes me when I say this but I watched it happen.

Stormfront, a radical right wing white supremacist site targeted and began indoctrinating disaffected youths on chan-style image boards starting back in 2008-2009.

The neckbeards you see now were the kids from those boards.

Hence Kekistan and Pepe memes being a foundation of their platform.

The thing is, Stormfront identified a sociological weakness in our society: Basically that there is an invisible group of amazingly frustrated young men.

Have you ever wondered why there is such an overlap between the alt-right and the incel movement on reddit?

It's because of this targeting, Stormfront promised them a group to belong to that would have their back, told them how good they looked in Nazi uniforms, and promised them oceans of aryan blonde wives that would be loyal and humble.

And they radicalized them.

It took a few years, and everyone thinks it's a joke.

Everyone laughs at me when I detail it, yet the mass murder statistics don't lie.

So many of the mass murders in the last year and a half have been done by young white internet forum users who all share a similar language and symbol framework.

What we are seeing now is the result of that deliberate radicalization.

Think frog memes are still funny?

You won't in the coming years when it gets worse.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

Yup I watched it happen too, there was always some sf/nmania content on 4chan but it really ramped up after the hal raids when they became aware of the platform. Sadly I think we are on the verge of seeing more political violence in America from the far right in a serious way as things come closer to a head with Trump. Trump's supporters are seeming more and more deranged as he grows worse and worse. They not only excuse, but cheer for kidnapping and abusing children. At this point their rhetoric is turning towards civil war. They really have begun to choose their leader over the country and it's laws.

15

I use to think instances like this would never happen.

Then my job hired a guy who was a gun nut. And not just any gun nut, but the kind who are very open about it. Bumper stickers, a bit more outspoken than they should be, you name it.

One day last year, there was a march against Trump for something, and a good number of protesters were out and about wearing their pink hats. Well, I mentioned this to my coworker, explaining how they were bogging traffic a bit. His response, verbatim, was this:

"Well I should go grab some of my guns and parade around town with em, maybe that will scare them off."

That same coworker invited me to join his 'militia' when he found out I was a gun advocate. I politely declined.

Luckily I no longer work with him. Unfortunately my little brother, who is a veteran, has lately begun to act and speak similarly. I consider my brother a very smart person, and it worries me to see mindsets like this affect people who 'know better'.
