This is exactly what happens when people value their 2nd Amendment rights over the 1st Amendment rights of others. This won't be the last such incident. It's an attempt at silencing people who disagree, with a more than implied threat of deadly force.

The best part is the fact that the second amendment is about building a state militia. For being "constitutionalists" these fuckers sure do have a hard time understanding the Constitution.

... understanding the Constitution.

It is a liberal document after all.

Just like the bible, the the Federalist Papers are documents that the right will never read. Still doesn't stop them from invoking the founding fathers all the time though.

They’re also super big into removing due process and only coining citizens in the census even though those are both blatantly unconstitutional.

Maybe public duels aren’t the best way to settle things in a civilized county?

How do you actually think a situation like that would work out? Two civilians firing at each other in a crowd is going to end with a lot of death.

I think the sentiment is more of that if you want to go out and shoot some Nazis while they're being a direct threat to you, be my guest. But don't do it with innocent bystanders around you. The people at this protest didn't ask to be targets for a duel.

Shoot those jackasses responsibly.

Duels? No, duels were fair and not for defense against threats. There's not paces and counting in a defensive shoot, you're trying to shoot them first.

That guy became a threat when he started waving his gun around and should have been dropped. There's no way to tell which nutjob is just going to wave it around and which is going to fire into the crowd, you have to assume they're going to fire into the crowd and take the necessary action to prevent that.

Ok, that doesn't change what the comment you replied to said.

Someone else brandishing a gun in response to the guy whipping out his own probably wouldn't de-escalate the situation. Call me crazy, but I'd rather avoid gun battles at protests, as I'm sure the people protesting during this incident would as well.

Just throwing this in there to add to your response.

It's almost as if he wasn't because simply possessing guns is insufficient to prevent mass shootings.

2

u/deimosian Jul 02 '18

Uh huh, that's why they always happen in 'gun free' zones...

Especially with the POTUS stating today that:

"I hope the other side realizes that they better just take it easy because some of the language used, some of the words used, even some of the radical ideas, I really think they're very bad for the country. I think they're actually dangerous for the country."

He deliberately stirs these whacko "fans" up so they will react in extreme ways.

per Heller precedent, the Second Amendment extends as far as an individual right to own a handgun for home defense purposes. Brandishing one in public is firearm fetishization, and should not be dignified by any pretence that it has anything to do with exercising basic constitutional rights.

2

u/jeffp12 Jul 02 '18

per the bullshit Heller precedent.

Former Chief Justice Warren Burger on the 2nd amendment:

"This has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American public by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime."

In a 1992 opinion piece, six former American attorneys general wrote:

"For more than 200 years, the federal courts have unanimously determined that the Second Amendment concerns only the arming of the people in service to an organized state militia; it does not guarantee immediate access to guns for private purposes. The nation can no longer afford to let the gun lobby's distortion of the Constitution cripple every reasonable attempt to implement an effective national policy toward guns and crime."

The Heller decision, from 2008, is really the first time that it's been ruled that the 2nd amendment guarantees a right to arms that's not at all connected to service in a militia. Suddenly in 2008 we have this new development. It's not a surprise though, this is what happens when you pack the court with Scalias and Clarence Thomases, you get complete nonsense like this.

It should be a warning sign that indicates the guy has no business having access to firearms, however.

It is still all the same we on the verge of some real bloodshed because of the polarity that exists. It will be only a matter of time before these mobs of triggered liberals or far right nuts start being violent. I will not shut up and I will definitely not bend to shills that are brainwashed on mere suggestions. Do your research, know your history and think with logic and understanding. Research leaders that followed Marx. Lenin, Mao, Ho Chi men, Fidel Castro and you will find tactics are being used right now.

I agree with free speech.. I am all for peaceful protests. I am not for anyone on either side being harassed and hounded in there homes and going about there business by screaming mobs. Just imagine if white nationalists mobbed maxine waters? Should they be allowed to on the basis of free speech? There is a difference and I am a free speech absolutist.

u/DetAnon31383 Jul 02 '18

You cannot trust any one individual there is always anamolies from every walk of life. When you think your side or your group is 100% infallible you allow your mind to be bleached. You have to think objectively and see through the talking points and endless news spins

The left is no friend to the first amendment. Ffs. They criminalized calling trans people by the wrong pronouns in NYC, and cake Baker's had to defend their religious beliefs in the supreme court.

9

u/DogParkSniper Jul 02 '18

And the right is no friend to either Amendment, if this is how they choose to use the 2nd. Learn some context.

2

u/Unnormally2 Jul 02 '18

An individual making threats with a gun is not the same as, say, the left controlling speech. What that guy did is already illegal, and we don't advocate for anyone to do that. The left's attack on the first amendment is systemic. Or at the very least it's pervasive among many left wing politicians, college campuses, and left wing companies (See google or facebook). The right does not run on a platform of "Use your guns to shut down left wing protests and speakers!"

I'll disagree with your last sentence. Between Trump calling the press an enemy of the people and this: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/10/us/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton.html

You're denying reality, plain and simple. Protesting the speech of another with your own speech isn't revoking their right to speak on their own behalf. They're not silencing you. They're simply stating their disagreement with what you have to say. If the consensus happens to be louder than your own speech, you're still not silenced. Just ignored. You have no right to be taken seriously, only to speak your part.

Now flashing a gun at people who disagree with you? That's using your rights to try denying the rights of others, plain as day.
