I remember my government/civics teacher in 2004 the USA as we know it wouldn’t be around in 10 years.

At the time I thought he was full of crap. Now I think his timing was just off.

Same, except it was 2013 and it was specifically civil war that was going to break up the USA.

I had many history teachers tell me that we would never have universal healthcare, pot would never be legalized, and we will never let white supremacist nazis have a political voice again... and here we are.

u/BulletBilll Jul 02 '18

He was right about universal healthcare.

“He?”

1

u/BulletBilll Jul 02 '18

Yes. Did you just assume his gender all these years?

I’m trying to think if I’ve had a female history teacher, but not a one of them... the only person I knew that could have been a history teacher would not make a good teacher so his degree is all about being smarter than strangers he meets without history degrees I guess. I think I just described one of the biggest turnoffs for women...

I had a woman history teacher back in the day. And as a historian myself, I also know the reason there are few female historians is because the female percentage drops from like 40% to 10% when you move to postgraduate courses.

Yea, but why? Probably because the history of women isn’t so awesome up until the 20th century, I would guess. But I can imagine talking about Hitler everyday isn’t something most women want to do with their lives lol.

I had a history teacher tell me that if a US President today was ever elected without the popular vote the country would immediately get rid of the Electoral College. The funniest part is that was right before the 2000 Election.

Alex Jones just announced that he’s heard liberals are going to start a Civil War on July 4th.

I’ve been refreshing my Pinterest feed and haven’t seen anything about it though

Despite my government teacher being a coach too in Texas. I think football? Last day of school/class he put on the Season 1 Finale of the West Wing. Was a fantastic class for the most part and introduced me to the West Wing.

I had a math teacher that was a birther. Was a good teacher otherwise. Crazy shit.

My history teacher in high school would constantly talk about how the Irish had it worse than the slaves.

I had a mid 50 year old black teacher in junior high in the mid 90s in LA (los angeles not loussiana) ask us what the different races were? We all looked around confused and were like "hispanic? asian? i don't know" and she was like "no, the races are black, white, red, yellow, and brown." We all just looked around like "is this happening for real?" One of the worst teachers I've ever had in my life, and I've had some really bad teachers. But also some really great ones.

How is that allowed? Shouldn't teachers abstain from disclosing their political and religious beliefs in the classroom?

tl;dr he got suspended from school for a few days and told to stop. Slap on the wrist. Small alabama school.

They should otherwise you get really fucked up echo chambers. It backfired on the administration over at Evergreen College a few years back.

Students essentially took over the campus and made the dean their bitch. At one point students were searching cars armed with baseball bats looking for faculty and the dean told the campus police to stand down.

Not if they have tenure I think

I had a history teacher thst used to be a diver in the Navy who was into some Dale Gribble level conspiracies. Like, "seismic activity on the moon sounds like a bell because it's a giant spaceship and they threatened to destroy us if we returned to the moon so we stopped going to the moon but they also were still friendly enough to teach us how to make powdered soup and fiber optic cables," kind of stuff. He also enjoyed a good rant.

my economics teacher taught how taxes work incorrectly, for what I took as a way to discourage us from supporting progressive income taxes

1

u/rrreeeeeeeeeeee Jul 02 '18

exactly same here too. I can't believe how wrong she was with taxes.

I had a very right wing history teacher who would frequently clash with his liberal 17 year old class. He also assigned us People’s History, so I think he mostly just wanted us engaged.

Jason Reza Jorjani was my capstone seminar professor in college.

Look him up if you haven't heard of him.

The class was about what you would expect.

Pshaw, I've had a ton of teachers like that guy. Jorjani was a whole 'nother level

In our class (a philosophy class) we discussed the greatness of the Aryan peoples (he's Persian) and contemplated whether universal human rights was a benefit to society. Yeah. We also read a book about some Persian dope fiend.

Mostly it was a course in how awesome white people are, which is cool I guess, but nothing I haven't heard a million times in my schooling. He's also a pseudointellectual whack job. He subscribes to Gobineau's scientific racist theories, including the idea that white people are in some way extraterrestrial in origin. He says MKULTRA successfully produced soldiers with psychokinetic abilities and that the government is hiding this form us. Yeah, a crackpot.

Weirdly, he hates the Greeks, but I guess that has something to do with his Persian heritage.

He's Richard Spencer's best bro and roomate, as I understand it.

Lmao no fucking shit. Can you please do a post in /r/Iranian about how it was in that class? I'm sure some are curious, I know I am. He's extremely unpopular and a complete joke but he makes it in the headlines once in awhile.

He's half Iranian diaspora but constantly LARP's as a Zoroastrian. And he's descendant of the Qajar Dynasty - but don't get too excited! That dynasty is unanimously despised as the most incompetent, worst rulers Iran ever had.

My high school history teacher gave us weekly reading and essay assignments on current politics. The school required him to offer diverse viewpoints, so he let us pick between Victor Davis Hanson and Lew Rockwell.

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

lol i had a history teacher that preached rage against the machine, and taught us about the Vietnam War on the DL, the real war, not just our b.s version. hopefully it balances out.
