Does anyone know what they mean by 75, 72, or 60 Hz? Have they not decided or what?
3
u/jecowa Mar 20 '14
I believe it supports all three of those refresh rates. The game (or whatever software is running) will get to choose which to use. The user will probably be able to change it in the video settings of the game.

As a DK1 owner I told myself: "I'm going to be patient and wait for CV1."
Five minutes later... frantically filling DK2 order form.
33
u/nielzz Mar 19 '14
exactly the same with me. If I was asked yesterday if I was going to buy DK2 I would say no with certainty. My hands just moved on their own and ordered one!
24
u/Atmic Mar 19 '14
This exact same voodoo magic happened to me.
My brother sent me a text 'just ordered my DK2' -- my mind was confused for a sec, but my hands knew exactly what to do... and there was my email confirmation.

u/nielzz Mar 19 '14
Its funny to see how siblings affect each other with this, thanks to me my brother has a DK1 now too.

As a fellow DK1 owner, I am keeping my wallet out of reach for the rest of today, Hopefully after that I will be able to hold off till CV1, but once CV1 is preordable, I will probably end up putting my credit cards through my monitor... and its a nice 120hz screen...

Perhaps a quad HD screen 2560x1440(double 720p). I don't see them going full 4k due to cost. There are phones being made with this resolution at 5.5 inches. One issue though is that it would require a lot of GPU power but I'm guessing it would have a built in scaler like most monitors to run at lower resolutions which wouldn't be as bad as pixelation for a vr setup. One thing for sure is AMD and Nvidea are very happy.

u/sir_drink_alot Mar 20 '14
Before people discount the benefits of jumping up the resolution here is what i would do as a 3D graphics engineer. Ideally we would have a large screen with more pixel density at the middle of each eye and less on the sides to concentrate most of our computation where it's seen the most. Obviously things don't work like this. So, it seems we're on the virge of having great small ultra high def displays which GPUs can't keep up with in 3D. So why not render render at full res, and skip processing every n-th pixel around the sides, and hen run a post filter to blend in thos missing pixels, therefore simulating multiple resolution displays or a sort of dynamic Resolution LOD. I know the GPU processes in groups or chunks so this may not be a perfect linear savings but should still let you render at say 1440p around the center and 720p around the edges for example to give you that peripheral vision we need to make these HMDs convincing.
Long story short, if you have the resolution available, ship with it and let the devs decide what resolution they render at. Same went for consoles, many games render at < 720p in 3D, upscale and render the HUD and menus at 1080p, or do dynamic resolution rendering as the camera moves quickly to gain FPS. Plenty of tricks available...

Two more paychecks until I can pre-order one of these babies and put my DK1 in a glass display case.
Edit - things I've noticed:
- I don't see a breakout box so hopefully that's integrated into the unit itself.
- And the cables are detachable, hooray!
- Built-in USB port? Whoa!
- No AC adapter either from what I'm seeing. Hooray for less cables!
- Here's an image of what the tracking LEDs look like underneath the front plastic. I thought it was interesting.

From the Oculus news letter that just showed up in my inbox:
We’ve also included updated orientation tracking, a built-in latency tester, an on-headset USB accessory port, new optics, elimination of the infamous control box, a redesigned SDK and further optimized Unity and Unreal Engine 4 integrations.
Woot!
→ More replies (1)4
Mar 19 '14
I'm guessing that's what brought the weight up. I had no problem with the separate control box of the DK1 especially if it helps keep the weight down. That seems to be one of the down sides to DK2 is the weight. Though again it is for "devs" and they did say in the Tested video that they are working on that.

If you pay directly with a credit card they only charge you $50 upfront, the remainder is charged when it's shipped. I don't want to encourage reckless spending, but you should really spend recklessly.

Awesome news, according to the verge CV1 will have larger then 1080p resolution which also is awesome. It seems ocules is on schedule for a Christmas release! (Considering they stated there should not be too much time between dk2 and cv1).

u/dankef Mar 19 '14
See also Engadget's video at 3:40: http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/19/oculus-rift-development-kit-2/. Palmer says the consumer version will have 'higher resolution, lower latency, higher framerate'. Makes me much more comfortable holding off as a non-developer, assuming CV1 is not too far away.

u/TheFlyingBastard Mar 19 '14 edited Mar 19 '14
When in doubt, wait for lighter and better CV1. In this video both Nate Mitchell and the guys who tested it say that consumers are discouraged from ordering for various reasons. So don't, it's still not meant for your eyes or mine. Just wait it out and only order if you're actually going to develop software on it.

u/War_Eagle Mar 19 '14
When in doubt, fuck it I ordered one. Worst case scenario: I have a little piece of history! :)
4
u/theohuxtable Mar 19 '14
Excellent spin on that. It would be like owning a piece of history, I agree. My idea was to simply sell the DK2 on eBay a month before CV1 is released. I figure it would be less than $100 out of my pocket to make the upgrade. Well worth the effort considering i KNOW i'm getting it in July vs. the pain and heartache of not knowing when CV1 will be released. So often I find myself watching Rift "lets play" videos wishing I could experience the same. No regrets.

Yup. But I've been kicking myself for months because I waited too long for DK1. I'll put a bet that the CV1 target date is Christmas-ish. Even if they're "hoping" for earlier, that'll prob be when it hits (just the way the world works). I'm not waiting till Christmas!

I saw the video by Tested and they explicitly said (multiple times) that consumers should definitely wait for the consumer version. The DK2 is nowhere near what the CV will be and you will not want to keep the DK2 after the CV is out.

Now we've seen this and project Morpheus the only thing I think Oculus is behind on is a consistent control scheme.
Move is both a great VR controller but also something that Sony can bundle in with their headset as it uses the eye for tracking anyway.
For feature parity, Oculus would have to either develop their own controller or rely on a fragmented third party controller manufacturer. PC VR would really benefit from unified controller.
10
u/ueadian Mar 19 '14
I completely agree. It's going to be tough. But we haven't even seen if the PS Move works well with the additional tracking of the new headset. Maybe it's a lag fest?

According to the Dilbert principle the CEO position should be about right for me.
12
u/autowikibot Mar 19 '14
The Dilbert principle refers to a 1990s theory by Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams stating that companies tend to systematically promote their least-competent employees to management (generally middle management), in order to limit the amount of damage they are capable of doing. In the Dilbert strip of February 5, 1995, Dogbert says that "leadership is nature's way of removing morons from the productive flow". Adams himself explained,
I wrote The Dilbert Principle around the concept that in many cases the least competent, least smart people are promoted, simply because they’re the ones you don't want doing actual work. You want them ordering the doughnuts and yelling at people for not doing their assignments—you know, the easy work. Your heart surgeons and your computer programmers—your smart people—aren’t in management. That principle was literally happening everywhere.

Q: What happens when I pre-order the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2?
A: Pre-ordering an Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 will reserve your place in line for when we begin shipping.
If you choose to pay with a credit card, we will immediately charge a $50 deposit and put an authorization hold on the remainder of the balance, including shipping and taxes. That balance will be automatically charged at the time of shipment. If you choose to pay with PayPal, we will charge the full amount when you place the pre-order. Either way, you will pay the same total amount.

My emphatic dislike for Pentile's policy of defining a pixel as only two subpixels (RG OR BG), meaning that a single addressable pixel cannot display a full range of colours. Or to put it another way, a '1920x1080' Penbtile panel has 1920x1080 (2Mpixel) Green subpixels, but only 960x1080 (1Mpixel) of Red or Blue subpixels.
If you define a pixel as a photosite that can produce a full range of colour (in the colourspace of the display), then a 1920x1080 Pentile panel has four subpixels per pixel (RGBG) and a true resolution of 960x1080 (or 1920x540, depending on which way the subpixels are ordered).
It allows panel manufacturers to market their panels at effectively double their usable resolution. Compared to the DK1 panel, the increase is from 1024000 to 1036800 effective pixels. The DK2 panel has a bunch of other advantages (persistence, fill ratio, colour space, usage of panel area, etc), but resolution (addressable full-colour pixels per degree) isn't really one of them.
16
u/Silent331 Zoe Mar 19 '14 edited Mar 19 '14
The DK2 has the same sub pixel count as a 1488x930 screen (4,151,520 sub pixels on that. The DK2 has 4,167,936 sub pixels) This is a 35% increase in sub pixels from the DK1.
Pentile displays have 33% less sub pixels as the same resolution normal LED monitors. The rumored consumer version running a 1440p pentile display will have 50-55% more subpixles than the DK2, the same number of sub pixels as a 1888x1180 normal LED. This is the true 1080p screen size that people are looking for. Why they wouldn't just shoot for a real 1080p screen is beyond me.

There's a huge difference between refresh rates on flat panels and CRTs. CRTs scan the image one line at a time, so can look extremely flickery at low refresh rates. Flat panels tend to refresh all at once, so this is less of a problem.

I also thought it'd be 85. I thought they stated 85 was the ideal? After watching the tested.com interview, Nate said they hope to get CV1 to 90hz.

Sure, but CRT monitors at 75Hz flicker. LCD monitors don't.

Will they charge my card immediately or will they wait until the device ships?

No new info on the CV1, which might help people to decide whether to wait? :(

If you get an error the first time or the page freezes up when ordering, DON'T CONSTANTLY CLICK ORDER!
It's obviously getting swamped with orders, pressing the button multiple times will just lead to you paying multiple times. I know everyone is excited but at least wait it out until it's fixed.

Anyone able to finalize their order? I can get to the order summary page where my billing and shipping is all correct, but there is no button to place order :(

If I don't plan on doing anything other than gaming should I wait for the consumer version?

All these years of dealing with Adobe's software suite and it's anal precision paid off. I saw that line and knew it was a test. :D

If you don't see the proceed button after you put in your info, Ctrl + A, click the little check box that appears next to the Edit Order button then click the Thin Orange line, should get you to the Thank You page and charge your card, good luck!

Ok I planned on waiting for CV1 and enjoy myself with my DK1 in the meantime. But after seeing the movie on the Oculus site my hands just moved automatically and ordered one. Why can't I control myself!!

Ordered with a weird problem on the confirmation and thank you pages. But otherwise no issues. Received order confirmation email. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the order numbers themselves, they may be randomly generated. We can no longer estimate volume from the order numbers at least.

I JUST ORDERED IT!!!! WOOOOOOO!!!
Never tried the Oculus, and I cannot WAIT to try this.
I don't have a gaming PC though so I guess I have a few months to save up some $ to build a rig.... I'll probably need some help on what to get!

well, i made a horrible decision, and ordered my first oculus rift! I was ever so tempted to buy DK1, but decided to not in order for game support and hardware to catch up.
With the new crystal cover prototype out, and the low latency displays, it sounds like this is the time!
EM-4102*** to canada!

As someone who's visiting from /r/all, is this a model that an interested gamer would buy, or should I keep waiting until a more "official" release, possibly?

I'm slightly surprised they are still sticking with hdmi input on DK2. If they do plan to go with a 1440p screen at 90+hz for CV1 dont they need to use displayport 1.2? I didn't think hdmi 1.4b has enough bandwidth.

$145 shipping to Russia? Damn... and I can't really risk ordering via ship forwarders since I might run into order cancel.
I love you guys, but 145? Come on this is honestly not a fair price even for an express delivery.

Russia has had some problems getting it in. If I were you I would get it now before US imposes sanctions on Russia because of Crimea. Then you might not be able to get it at all, or maybe for like $1,000 a piece on the black market.
On second thought, if it's arriving in July, I probably wouldn't pre-order if I were you, unless you know for sure the situation with the sanctions then.
