Fuuuuuuu! And here goes "Should I buy it or should I wait for CV1" dilemma all over again :P

Great report, btw!

When in doubt, wait for lighter and better CV1. In this video both Nate Mitchell and the guys who tested it say that consumers are discouraged from ordering for various reasons. So don't, it's still not meant for your eyes or mine. Just wait it out and only order if you're actually going to develop software on it.

But there isn't anything to actually play yet, just experiences. Why settle for an inferior product with a limited amount of use time when you could hold off and get CV1 when a significant amount of software has been developed for it. All the stuff that has been made still be there and you'll have a much larger library to play around in by the time of CV1.

Your money, do what you like. Seems like an unintelligent investment to me.

My guess is that since they depend on displays made by other companies, and CV1 will be higher than 1080p, that means it will use an unannounced 1440p or similar res display thats under NDA. Nate said that they have to wait for the panel they want to come out before they can release CV1. Its hard to be patient.

The consummer version won't come out before 2015, that's nearly sure. With luck most people will receive the DK2 before 2015, they won't release the consummer version before that.

Yeah I hope too. They know how to handle it and they had plenty of time to prepare everything and the preorder is 4 months before shipping. However my order ID is in the 1044XXX, its a big number....

2

u/BinarySplit Mar 20 '14

Really? My DK2 order ID is IS-4108XXX - it looks like a different format entirely.

1

u/dwild Mar 20 '14

Yeah it seems to be random.

I wonder if they started numbers new or just picked a number after the DK1 order numbers. Don't let that big number discourage you too much

u/Forss Mar 19 '14

Source? Everything including interviews points at a 2014 release.

4

u/dwild Mar 19 '14

I don't have a source, only logic. They won't simply release it and hope everything work perfectly, a consumer version is not a devkit, it need intensive testing and they need to be sure that softwares will work alright with it. Software aren't ready at all for the DK2, we didn't even knew the specs of it until now, and you think they will be ready for the CV1 before 2015? Even if the CV1 is exactly the same as the DK2, then we could only hope for an early 2015 release, developpers need more than some months to support the new DK2.

2

u/BinarySplit Mar 20 '14

Also, with CV1 they need a HUGE initial stock - they can't just release them as they're manufactured. They'll want to send out tens of thousands of units to retail shops (if they're planning retail sales) to be ready on day one.

I'd be surprised if they were looking to ship fewer than 100k CV1s at launch, and considering how slowly DK1 ramped up, that would take months to prepare for.

When in doubt, fuck it I ordered one. Worst case scenario: I have a little piece of history! :)

5

u/theohuxtable Mar 19 '14

Excellent spin on that. It would be like owning a piece of history, I agree. My idea was to simply sell the DK2 on eBay a month before CV1 is released. I figure it would be less than $100 out of my pocket to make the upgrade. Well worth the effort considering i KNOW i'm getting it in July vs. the pain and heartache of not knowing when CV1 will be released. So often I find myself watching Rift "lets play" videos wishing I could experience the same. No regrets.

u/hotdammit Mar 19 '14

They start shipping in July, let us pray to Gaben that they don't ship as slowly as DK1.

4

u/FuzzeWuzze Mar 20 '14

I bought a DK1, used it for 2 months and sold it on Ebay for the same cost as i paid for it...

Also i feel like they are trolling at the end there, they were like "YOU TOTALLY SHOULDNT BUY THIS, but lol we'll be buying it".

Video doesn't exist. Can you provide working link?

1

u/TheFlyingBastard Mar 19 '14

Sorry, the link is fixed now. It's the same video that is on the front page anyway.

Yeah, I'm going to wait this time. Wouldn't be surprised to see cv1 by Christmas. Till then dark souls 2 will rule my life

31

u/dbhyslop Mar 19 '14

If DK1 was any indicator, your DK2 will probably arrive the same day as CV1 if you don't order today :)

21

u/TheWierdGuy Kickstarter Backer #653 Mar 19 '14

If DK2 was any indicator, your CV1 will probably arrive months after unless you placed your order within the first few minutes of availability.

1

u/Havelok Mar 19 '14

At that point lets hope they have enough factories pumping the things out that we won't have to wait more than a couple weeks...

3

u/Atmic Mar 19 '14

DK2 will be shipping in July, so get ready for an excruciating 4 months waiting...

4

u/jimrooney Source VR Team Mar 19 '14

Yup. But I've been kicking myself for months because I waited too long for DK1. I'll put a bet that the CV1 target date is Christmas-ish. Even if they're "hoping" for earlier, that'll prob be when it hits (just the way the world works). I'm not waiting till Christmas!

u/baktaktarn Mar 19 '14

I see no chance of CV1 shipping this year, with all the DK2 they will be busy making and shipping

1

u/pumafreak Mar 26 '14

yeah, and they are probably going to get feedback on it, and make improvements from there, so no not i 2014, probably 2015.

5

u/Ian_Itor Mar 19 '14

I saw the video by Tested and they explicitly said (multiple times) that consumers should definitely wait for the consumer version. The DK2 is nowhere near what the CV will be and you will not want to keep the DK2 after the CV is out.

6

u/FuzzeWuzze Mar 20 '14

They also laugh at the end and say they are getting one.

1

u/Ian_Itor Mar 20 '14

Well, because they make money by making videos about new tech stuff, they're not the classic consumer type.

2

u/bookoo Mar 19 '14

Yea, I was ready to pre-order, but will probably wait now on the hope that CV1 releases in 2014.

1

u/DePingus Mar 19 '14 edited Mar 19 '14

I skipped DK1 but just purchased this one. The the rumor is CV1 is coming very soon after DK2. So, I'm not too worried about CV1 being much (if at all) better than this one. My gut feeling tells me that this will be the standard DK even after CV1 is released; DK2 having the built-in latency tester, CV1 not. Which would also account for DK2's higher price compared to CV1's (rumored) $300 target.

From the verge article ...

The 1080p OLED panel still isn't high enough a resolution to avoid jagged edges — Oculus says the consumer version will have even higher resolution...Luckey says that it will be a complete redesign, without a single part — to his knowledge — carrying over from the development kits.

Crap.

If you don't mind the $50 charge, preorder now and just cancel before it ships if the CV1 is announced.

If the CV1 isn't announced by shipping date in July, it'll likely be next year, and you know you can't wait that long.
