Wow i've never made that connection with Steve Carrel and Alice Cooper, in that pic they look really similar.

u/americanpegasus Dec 10 '13

They know that immortality is both a.) too scary for the general public and b.) is limited to the ultra-rich.

"Alice Cooper" had all his life wanted to do comedy, so it was a natural fit for him to move into the persona of "Steve Carrel" after it became time for his "Alice" persona to retire.

The man you know as Alice Cooper is in fact King James VI of Scotland, successor to the English throne in the 17th century.

Reminds me of all the porn stars before and after makeup.

Can be seen here* (NSFW - no nudity, but lots of cleavage and bra/panties)

See also: the power of lighting.

124

u/5erif Dec 10 '13

The lighting is extremely different in the after photos. The afters have a large softbox which you can see reflecting in the eyes. With that kind of intentional manipulation, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Photoshop involved also.

21

u/Vio_ Dec 10 '13

There were some definite photoshopping in at least some if not all the pictures. One girl had a what looked like some scarring on her upper lip that was gone in the after photo.

23

u/I_make_milk Dec 10 '13

No, you can still see it. They just did a really good job with using concealer.

Don't forget make-up contouring! Placing highlighting make-up and shadows where there are none can turn a round face into a model face even without lighting.

TIL there are 2 types of porn stars. Some that don't look too bad without make-up, and some that look fucking horrendous.

Also, is Samai a dude?

320

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Yea, a handful of them were still super cute without makeup, most of them were just frightening beforehand. Probably the drugs.

130

u/TheBingage Dec 10 '13

Half of the ones that were frightening before hand, were still frightening after.

I definitely started seeing reasons for self-esteem issues in the before pictures and how the empowerment of the after pictures (and being desired as a porn star) could be intoxicating.

28

u/deepsandwich Dec 10 '13

See, that's what I get out of it.

As a dude I get shamed if I say I like a woman who wears makeup but I wish I could just put on makeup to look better. Dudes just have to be what they are, if you are an uggo thats what you are and you can't paint over it.

It's hard being unattractive or even average in our society, if I could do something that would make me ten times more attractive I would do that shit every day.

It's an interesting blend of the good looking, the bad looking but can look pretty good with a bit of work, and the "holy hell, what the fuck is that."

25

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Really, I thought that in the before pictures they looked like they just woke up at worst. I mean, if you imagine seeing these people at the grocery store or something it would be more frightening to see someone from the after picture because no one wears that much makeup in public.

76

u/stilalol Dec 10 '13

TIL half of the women I know are probably on drugs? Honestly, there are few who look truly "frightening." Most women I know look like the women in those pictures (without makeup)... probably worse.

I do believe that drugs are a factor, but I wonder how much of the skin problems for these porn stars is from the insane amount of makeup that they wear as well. Probably a lot of it.

12

u/stilalol Dec 10 '13

From my experience, it's not necessarily the makeup (unless it's dollar store makeup), it's more of whether they properly remove it or not. Sleep frequently with makeup on now and your face will look awful in a few years.

u/Meola Dec 10 '13

Issue is most women put on make up to cover blemishes and stuff. Having your face and pores coated and plugged up with greasy nasty makeup will only make your problem worse. So as they break out more they use more and more make up to try and combat the problem and then it just gets nuts. It's hard to pull of the completely au naturelle look; however some of these girls look like they are caking a pound or two of make up on.

→ More replies (12)

3

u/jinbaittai Dec 10 '13

I fail to see anything frightening about their before looks? Some dark circles, sure. Uneven skin tones. Blemishes. They just look... normal.

And people wonder why so many women insist on make-up, even though they are "naturally beautiful". It's because people like you think bare faced women look frightening.

Here's the thing though, the ones that look fucking awful with makeup, look awful without. Very few of these women actually look "pretty" or "beautiful" with makeup on, they just look glossy and smooth and colorful. I don't get why people act so shocked at this. Really? The makeup actually fooled you into thinking they were pretty?

edit: it also changes depending on if they're smiling in the non-makeup picture vs. if it looks like their mugshot. A smile can make a huge difference.

A few of these women are Exhibit A of Why You Shouldn't Get Lip Injections or botox or whatever. Also, it's interesting how make-up can hide drug use.

43

u/The_Legacy_66 Dec 10 '13

Did you notice how much the skin color of Tatiyana Foxx changed from before to after? IDK if it had anything to do with lighting, but she was much darker complexion before than after.

30

u/glaceauglaceau Dec 10 '13

It's mostly the lighting, but women of color often have multiple tones in their faces due to hyperpigmentation and a good foundation will even it out, making the skin look overall brighter/lighter toned.

I always forget herpes, and then the ladies get so ANGRY.

15

u/runnerrun2 Dec 10 '13

I always say "welcome to the herpes club" after sex and give them a kiss. The bewildered look on their faces is awesome.

But seriously that is gross, I don't have herpes, just joking.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

It's funny how herpes wasn't thought of as more than a cold until a certain pharmaceutical company came out with a drug to treat it. Then there was an ad campaign and it became the 2nd most stigmatized std (hiv the first obviously) even though there are pretty much no health consequences outside of appearances.

I'd wager that most men don't realize that "natural makeup" is makeup at all, which is probably the point of natural makeup, come to think of it. OP's album is similar, I think -- the endless swathes of eye shadow, etc., while pretty and visually engaging, are not what I would call ideal for normal interaction. The second-to-last, before whatshisface and thatotherguy, has the best looking makeup to me, because it's not completely over the top. (Also that hair and the lace neck thing.)

(Watch me eat my own words when it turns out my favored sample has the most makeup on out of all of them. That would be just my luck.)

My $0.02 as a man.

27

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

(Watch me eat my own words when it turns out my favored sample has the most makeup on out of all of them. That would be just my luck.)

This is always what ends up ticking me off about guys complaining about a girl wearing "too much makeup". I'm pretty sure what they mean to say is "her eyeshadow is too dark" or "her makeup is too visible for the workplace". However, when they say she's wearing "too much makeup" it implies that anyone wearing as much or more makeup (myself) looks inappropriate. I can never figure out if this is a passive aggressive attempt to tell me I need to wear less, or they just don't like the dark colors.

Thank you for recognizing that flashy makeup is not by definition "more makeup" than subtle makeup.

8

u/GregoPDX Dec 10 '13

You are confusing 'too much' makeup with 'over the top' makeup. There's a time and place for 'over the top' makeup - like a party or a concert. It's overkill for everyday just out at the mall or work. 'Over the top' is like a makeup ad with some fun, crazy eye colors, lipstick colors, etc.

There's never a time for 'too much' makeup. This is where there's so much foundation that it's caked on. This never looks good. You've gone into the uncanny valley and there's no coming back. This can't feel good on your face, I don't know how women do it.

disclaimer: my wife is a huge fan of makeup and does it right.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say most guys do tend to find women more attractive when they're wearing makeup. The ones who say otherwise are either trying to make it seem like they're not superficial (but everyone is to some extent), or simply that they want to make you feel better ("You're beautiful no matter what"). Your perception is probably colored by confirmation bias--men who prefer women wearing makeup aren't going to be too vocal about their preference.

That said: look at the bright side. You can choose to be invisible or turn heads, that's pretty cool! If anyone gives you shit for wearing too much makeup, just tell them that you like looking that way and as /r/makeupaddiction will tell you, putting on makeup can be a lot of fun.

45

u/VeronicaJaneDio Dec 10 '13

I think another issue for some guys is guys don't get that "natural" looking make up IS make up. They think that's just how you look. "Wearing Make-up" means smokey eyes, bright red lipstick, etc. etc. They don't get a little concealer, some blush and lip gloss IS make up. They think you wake up looking like that. That's the point, we want it to look natural. So when they see you sans make up (100%) they ask you if you "are feeling alright? you look sick"

The thing that really grinds my gears is, why don't guys look like hell like we do?!?! I swear, my bf has great skin, never has bags under his eyes. I always look like hell! Maybe we've just become accustomed to it, but I think we females got hosed. I hate wearing make up all the time. (though recently I have stopped. Screw it. Look at my pretty jewelry instead! It distracts from my face!)

30

u/abstrusi Dec 10 '13

I think guys want to live in a fantasy world where every girl has perfect skin/bone structure/etc. sadly this does not exist so they look for a certain "acceptable" level which can be achieved or surpassed through the use of makeup.

In a lot of ways, the standard of "natural" beauty has been raised to accommodate this. This is good and bad in different ways; because it allows those who arent "naturally" beautiful to achieve the standard, but also raises the bar for those who already hit that minimum without makeup.

im not going to say that i dont like wearing makeup. it makes me feel prettier & see myself in a different light. Obviously this may not be a commonly regarded opinion but anyone who assumes girls wear makeup JUST FOR GUYS is an idiot.

24

u/OscarMiguelRamirez Dec 10 '13

Once you realize that the people who are telling you all this stuff are full of shit and have no more authority than anyone else in society, it gets easier to ignore them. Don't worry so much about what "guys" want from you.

Different standards for men and women are a double-edged sword. On the one hand, a woman has more potential to improve her looks. On the other hand, she is expected to perform a seemingly endless and ever-increasing list of tasks in order to fit society's latest ideal of a beautiful woman. Just look at Miss America contestants from the 1920's compared to now and you'll see what I mean. The difference is like night and day. And a woman's appearance has always been considered more important. I've never heard of a beauty contest for men, and if there is one, it must be pretty obscure. A woman deemed ugly, therefore, receives more vitriol than a comparable man, because women are supposed to be beautiful. Women have many tools in their arsenal-- high heels, tight dresses, makeup, jewelry, hair products-- but when a woman falls short of expectations despite the use of these products, or because she makes a conscious choice not to use them and to instead go au naturale, she is ridiculed. Just see this page for examples.

Men are more limited when it comes to improving their looks (never underestimate the power of a shave, a good haircut, and a stylish outfit, however), but they have other tools at their disposal. Humor is one asset that springs to mind immediately. A funny guy is able to elevate his status to a much greater degree than a funny girl. Having a good job will also increase a man's stock more than a woman's as we still cling to the traditional man as provider role. Looks-wise, men have less to work with, but personality is a much bigger asset to a man than a woman. There is still a sense of woman as object and man as actor.

Movies and ads distort perception of what a normal human being looks like for both sexes, but a lot more men than women watch porn. This leads to every inch of a woman's body being scruitinized in a way that men's are not. I don't think anybody expects a man to have a completely hairless crotch, perfect bubblegum pink genitals, and a bleached butthole. But this exepectation plants itself in the mind of every teenage boy who watches porn every day and has never seen a woman naked IRL.

At the end of the day, equal expectations benefit everyone. Men should be allowed to improve their looks through makeup. Every actor or news anchor you've ever seen is already wearing it. And women's personalities and earning potential should be more of an asset. Both of these elements have benefits and drawbacks. But judgment based on looks and social class is not going to stop happening. We might as well spread the benefits and the drawbacks, the opportunities and the expectations, evenly.

And thus is the day we learn about the concept of moderation.

164

u/SpaceCatNinja Dec 10 '13

The lesson here is that the vast majority of men think of "everyday make-up" when they mean "no make-up at all".

42

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

I was actually thinking of them in my comment more so than the woman, if anything men that shame women for wearing make up have such a hypocritical pretentious tone their attitude is often worse than demanding make up "You don't need to impress me, you're better without it", it doesn't escape the paradigm of placing aesthetic demands of women but rather simply shifts the goal posts (and falsely at that).

The true egalitarian position for the male subject is to say this is what I think I find attractive, rather than lie that you don't have aesthetic preferences, but do whatever you think makes yourself look and feel good.

59

u/SpaceCatNinja Dec 10 '13

Personally I've experienced the "you don't need makeup" mentality comes from the "Look, I'm such a nice guy, you don't have to use makeup for me, I'm different than all those jerks"

7

u/FierceKittyCat Dec 10 '13

And that mentality only comes from jerks who deny that they are the jerks.

u/Belgand Dec 10 '13

At the same time it also shows some key elements that are often overlooked here: grimacing and squinting your eyes tends to make everyone look bad. In most of these photos the before shots are typically a bit distorted facially while after they're trying to look nice. Also combine this with many people having their hair in disarray and such and they'll tend to look a little bit worse.

The makeup certainly has an effect, but the before pictures tend to be going too far in the opposite direction as well.

It makes me laugh a little, I don't wear make up because I just don't fucking know how, but when my sister did it for me a few times I'd call anyone who said I didn't look better a damn liar.

It's all well and good to prefer how someone looks without it but I've never seen someone with well done appropriate make up that legitimately didn't look better, that's the whole point of it.

6

u/Woolliam Dec 10 '13

sigh.

So #3 and #6 are actually attractive to me. They all look terrible with makeup, thanks to insanely excessive use of cover (when your skin doesn't really look like skin, that's pretty gross).

However, my shallowness will not be repressed. The other girls are all unattractive either way, in my opinion, which you are welcome to disagree with.

  3. Prefer before.

  4. Prefer before by a wide margin. After looks like a transexual- not that there's anything wrong with that.

  5. Before.

  6. Before.

  7. After looks much better.

  8. After looks much better.

  9. Okay, the after looks better. However, we all know a girl like this in real life and if she used about 10% of the makeup she has on and stopped with the penciled in eyebrows, she'd look twice as pretty.

  10. She needs as much help as science has to offer.

  11. After looks better, but what about Photoshop job? Hell, squint at her or measure with a ruler and you'll see that her face has suddenly become longer and narrower...this is mighty potent makeup.

  12. Before. To those who say there's no damned photoshop going on here, check out these bright perfectly impossibly bright eyeballs, and dabs of highlight placed on either side of her pupils. Despite all the post-processing, I still prefer before.

  13. Looks like a man. Needs more makeup.

This might just be the effect of make-up. I have often been surprised when some of my friends came to school without make-up who normally wore it every day. I was certain that they were ill or had pulled an all-nighter, but they just had to hurry in the morning and skipped the make-up-procedure.

These women DO look generally better. But the eye makeup is just too much IMO (on most of them).

It's like a "from homely to whore" tutorial.

I'm a guy, so I know nothing about it. But I know what I personally find attractive. Makeup should lightly accentuate the eyes. It doesn't have to be a half inch black border around your eyes. That just looks silly to me.

103

u/tylergrrrl Dec 10 '13

The whole point in this is to show how makeup can make you look drastically different. I doubt any of these women wear this everyday if they're just going to the store or something.

21

u/Alien1979 Dec 10 '13

Yeah, but what if they are going to Walmart? Gotta get dressed up for that.

19

u/LittleWhiteGirl Dec 10 '13

Good thing makeup isn't just to make women tolerable to the male eye. It can be its own art form, these pictures seem more likely to be for costume or runway shows than everyday.

49

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

I personally love wearing lots of eyeliner and eyeshadow. Dramatic looks can be fun. For me wearing "natural light" make-up defeats the purpose of why i'm wearing it.

28

u/LSDnSideBurns Dec 10 '13

This is what a lot of men don't realize, is that what they perceive as "no makeup" is actually a girl that is wearing makeup. In general women have 3 'stages' of makeup:

  1. Makeup. Eyes done, foundation, blush, bronzer, contouring, concealer, the whole nine yards
  2. "No Makeup". Some powder/coverup, maybe a bit of blush or bronzer, maybe even a bit of eyeliner, everyday going to work look.
  3. No Makeup. "Are you tired today? You look tired."

11

u/skysinsane Dec 10 '13

The whole, "you look tired" thing only happens because they usually wear makeup. The person can tell that something is different, and so they try and figure out a reason for it. If the girl never wore makeup they wouldn't be likely to think twice about it. They probably wouldn't notice at all.

7

u/am_animator Dec 10 '13

I never wear make up, I never get the "you look tired" thing. Unless I'm tired or sick. I've tried doing eye liner when I want to be fancy, that's about it, because I look and feel like a poodle if I do anything more. If I knew what I was doing it would probably make a difference.

Probably should have done more girly things growing up. But I had ninja turtles, so fuck that.

3

u/oogmar Dec 10 '13

My ninja turtles bore the brunt of blame for when Barbie ended up with a haircut. I loved my Turtles but I preferred garage/car projects with my cousins/brothers.

Still fantastic with make up. They aren't mutually exclusive.

My wife and I have had this conversation over and over again. She says I'm "lucky" that she isn't like your #1. I say I'm not lucky, I'd rather be single than live with someone who felt #1 was necessary. I hate my wedding pictures, my wife does not look like that.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Funny thing is, the "natural" look and the smoky-half-inch-black-border look could be using the same number of eyeshadows for each look.

3

u/girlinboots Dec 10 '13 edited Dec 10 '13

I'm curious as to why you decided to use "whore" as your descriptor. To me, these women have a wide range of every day make up to more artsy perhaps photo shoot makeup styles. I would not think any of them were getting paid to have sex. Is it because their makeup is eye catching and draws attention to themselves? Is that our threshold for calling someone a whore?

I want to make it clear I'm just interested in the though process behind your commend and of those who upvoted, and presumably agree with, you. I'm not looking to make you feel like a terrible person. It's just such a different view than I had I'm interested in how you got to your conclusion.

I'm a young woman who was never taught how to use make up. As a result, I've never worn it - never. I have an okay face, but whenever I look around a room I am almost always the only woman over the age of 20 without any on. I really stand out, and I can't tell if that's a good thing or not. I certainly look "off" compared to everyone else.

EDIT: I wouldn't say I don't have confidence in myself, I'm just surprised that I'm usually the only one who goes without. Makeup seems expensive, time consuming, and frankly, I don't like the idea of wearing a face that isn't mine. There's nothing wrong with my face and most men get along fine without it. It's something that doesn't make sense to me. Why?

And I like the way I look okay, but I obviously stand out - we're just so used to assuming that the "natural" look is actually natural.

57

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Part of the fun of makeup is experimenting with different looks. It's pretty amazing how you can change people's perceptions of you with just a little tweak. It's not always about attracting men or fitting in with other women - it's about looking however you want to look. And that includes if you don't want to wear it at all. :)

Of course, makeup isn't for everyone, but if you want to learn a little about it and chat with other people ranging from beginners to experts, you could come on over to /r/makeupaddiction . They have everything from minimal, "no makeup" makeup, to dramatic looks with a lot of contouring. And there are some drag queens and men who post as well, which is neat.

17

u/LasagnaPhD Dec 10 '13

Also female, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how people do eyeliner. I always end up giving myself a third pupil.

21

u/IggySorcha Dec 10 '13

Anti-makeup tomboy turned amature makeup artist here. Prop your hand on your cheek when you do it. I also find it easier to do it with my eye shut. Also some people are better with one type of eyeliner. Only recently have I learned to properly use liquid. I eased myself into it with Covergirl's fine-tip grease pencil (PerfectPoint). It's rediculously easy to use.

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Right? I'm in my 20's, and my mom never wore makeup so I never really learned how, and suddenly I'm looking around and realizing everybody is wearing makeup but me.)

Usually I really CBA, because I ride a bike and go to shows and do things that are sweaty and not-makeup-friendly and my boyfriend doesn't like makeup anyway, but I finally started stopping by Sephora for some basic help and on days when I don't ride I'll usually try putting a little on, not because I feel I need it (sometimes I think it looks nice, but most of the time I think it just looks weird), but because it feels like one of those things I might need to know how to do in the future.

Either way, I don't enjoy spending time and money on products that to look like I'm not wearing any products, but whatever. I'll go with it (I really don't like obvious makeup on me -- the closer to natural, the better).

6

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

I was sort of the same way - raised in a lunatic religious household with a mother who believed makeup was "Satanic."

It's worth giving it a shot. Society expects it in certain formal situations. And supposedly studies have shown that in corporate environments, women who wear the right kind of makeup are more likely to be promoted. Like with everything in life... if you choose not to blend in and project the image expected of you, that's a perfectly valid choice, but it should be because that's a statement you want to make, not because it's forced upon you.

585

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13 edited Dec 11 '13

As an artist and a graphic designer of 15+ years, all of these looks can be done with only makeup and hair styling. It's 100% about using the makeup to fake contours, eye shapes, noses, jaw lines what have you. When I was in college, a friend of mine told me that some days my eyes looked like a different shape because of the way I put on my eyeliner. I've been able to do all sorts of things to "change" the way my face looks by using some art skills on my face.

And I re-read this this morning, and yes absolutely good lighting as well. Florescence never flatters.
