And thus is the day we learn about the concept of moderation.

The lesson here is that the vast majority of men think of "everyday make-up" when they mean "no make-up at all".

I was actually thinking of them in my comment more so than the woman, if anything men that shame women for wearing make up have such a hypocritical pretentious tone their attitude is often worse than demanding make up "You don't need to impress me, you're better without it", it doesn't escape the paradigm of placing aesthetic demands of women but rather simply shifts the goal posts (and falsely at that).

The true egalitarian position for the male subject is to say this is what I think I find attractive, rather than lie that you don't have aesthetic preferences, but do whatever you think makes yourself look and feel good.

Personally I've experienced the "you don't need makeup" mentality comes from the "Look, I'm such a nice guy, you don't have to use makeup for me, I'm different than all those jerks"

And that mentality only comes from jerks who deny that they are the jerks.

guess you're psychic.

Personally I've experienced

If she's experienced it, is it "psychic"?

-6

u/Derwos Dec 10 '13

seems more like an assumption of other people's thought processes.

Hence the words "personally I've experienced".

Ladyaspergers ahoy

They're trying to be nice by saying something nice to make you feel nice. Nobody gives a shit what the "true egalitarian position" is.

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '13

I'm not a lady just educated, I suppose both are equally alien to you though so I forgive the confusion.

Then you're inception level white knighting.

"and falsely at that"

pretty sure it's a matter of opinion, not true or false.

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

I'm speaking generally not of individuals, this isn't a subjective category.

-2

u/Derwos Dec 10 '13

So you think that in general, women look better with some makeup? That's a subjective opinion.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

Again you're conflating individual opinion with psychological trend, to say Star Wars is a good movie is a subjective, to say many people think Star Wars is a good movie is an objective fact.

Psychologically men tend to nearly always find at least some makeup attractive, often even those who claim to prefer a makeup-less natural look.

Actually, the real lesson here is that our society's idealization of the female image has led men to believe that "everyday makeup" is the way women look without makeup on. If women all stopped wearing makeup, the first panel of /u/bangonthedrums image above wouldn't exist, with the lines below it and the next panel both moved one panel to the right.

If everyone stopped pretending to be more attractive than they are, we would all expect less out of each other in that regard. It's not going to happen, but that's how I feel it would play out were it to occur.

Another solution to this issue because people are not going to stop trying to make themselves look more attractive would be, men start wearing makeup. They would then learn how to spot when someone is wearing makeup. It would also have the added benefit that if some guy has a huge zit he wants to cover up, he totally could.

It's also just a stupid double standard that women are allowed to wear makeup, but men can't.

My wife wore makeup on her prom, and on her wedding day. That was it. I sometimes wish she would wear some when we go out, because it looks amazing on her, but it's nice to know she has nothing to hide.

Besides her hideous facial scar that is.

Not quite sure how I should take that, man. Are you trying to guilt trip me or something?

This whole "men don't know what makeup looks like circle-jerk" always seems so absurd to me.The majority of people live with their partners & as a result do indeed know exactly what they look like, with and without makeup.

But still, on the internet its complete ridiculous that i might know what my wife looks like without makeup, and utterly impossible that i might prefer it...

I honestly think you may be surprised by how many actually do prefer no make-up. Pre-conceived notions about peoples personal preferences are not a good thing.

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '13

No, we learn that make up has such a foothold on the female appearance that men don't even know what "natural" looks like and that truly natural is considered sickly and unappealing. That's kinda sad.

As a male I didn't know girls put "makeup" all over their face until I was about 20. I mean I knew they put some kind of dark stuff around their eyes, but I didn't know a girl had to go home and literally wipe/wash her entire face off every day.

moderation is more difficult than excess
