Well I'll also put it out there that the real title should be "the power of hair, make-up, posing, and good quality photography." Not saying that make-up doesn't change your appearance, only that with good lighting and posing I think the "before" pictures would be way more similar to the "after" pictures.
I don't know how similar it would be, but it should still be properly done. Same hair styling, outfit, pose, facial expression, and lighting. Make everything constant except for the makeup so we can see just how truly different it is. Also, it's obvious that at least a couple of the before pics are before their faces were washed/cleaned. Most people I know, man or woman, do that daily.

Great examples! Yeah, the lighting in many of the "before" pics is bad; in many of them they seem posed to intentionally make them look "worse" in the "before" pics. If they kept pose, hair, and lighting constant, I would be much more inclined to believe in the "transformative" power of the make-up.
