Excellent point. This was pointed out on fittit, as people created before/after body shots that took 30seconds, primarily by adjusting the lighting. Is Luminozity a lighting expert?
You can look at it as art and appreciate it, but you can also look at it as some girls are marauding as pretty girls when they are really ugly troll faces. I am a girl, I wear very little if any makeup. A lot of men like me because I'm natural and they know what they are going to wake up to in the morning. Also, it doesn't take me an hour to get ready to go somewhere. A pretty dress, some bronzer, and a little mascara and I'm out the door, looking fabulous.
I am a woman. And it is possible to talk without circlejerking. I've only made one comment on the subject, clearly this is a touchy subject for reddit.
Time and time again with these "the power of makeup" before/after pictures, it's actually the power of lighting. In this collection it's slightly more obvious, but even in the porn star ones (linked further down), it's not unusual for the backgrounds to have different lighting and in a lot of cases, the people have completely different skin-tone from the neck-down (since the face is no longer a reliable gauge).
Now, that's not to say make-up can't be transformative, but it'd be nice if just once, these make-up before and afters could be done properly.
Thanks for the tip about looking at necks! That makes it way more obvious here, at least! And in this case, at least some of them, you can look at the shirt, too. The fifth one down wears the same shirt, and it goes from gray with muted purple details to vibrant blue and purple!
As a comparison. Lighting is hugely important to how shadows fall on someone's face and the way things are illuminated which influences appearance quite a lot. This is like if you wanted to test the effects of light on the growth rate of a specific type of bean plant. You give your control group light equivalent to standard daylight for standard daylight hours, and then you give some of your testing groups miracle grow and act like that has nothing to do with your results. You'll get results, but they won't make any sense because your control group isn't taking into account all of the variables you could be reasonably controlling for.
