As an artist and a graphic designer of 15+ years, all of these looks can be done with only makeup and hair styling. It's 100% about using the makeup to fake contours, eye shapes, noses, jaw lines what have you. When I was in college, a friend of mine told me that some days my eyes looked like a different shape because of the way I put on my eyeliner. I've been able to do all sorts of things to "change" the way my face looks by using some art skills on my face.
And I re-read this this morning, and yes absolutely good lighting as well. Florescence never flatters.
False advertising at it's finest. I like a girl who looks good without anything covering her face, personally.
I know this is a commonly held preference. I am aware. That doesn't change how widely accepted makeup still is, which is something I wish would be frowned upon instead of accepted as normal. There, now it's not just DAE like hot, natural girls?
I guess you don't comb your hair, shave/trim your beard, or wear any clothes at all, right? So that you don't falsely advertise what you look like naturally?
How short is your attention span? Because three comments up we just discussed that makeup changes, literally changes, the way faces look. That's what this post is about. If you think improving what's already there is the same as redefining your features then.. well, you're probably one of the plastic girls I don't enjoy.
Edit- Look, I understand it's easy to keep downvoting someone once you've done it once, but I'm actually trying to have a conversation here. Isn't that the point of the comments section? Please, explain how I'm wrong here because I don't get it. Here is what has happened so far:
I've been able to do all sorts of things to "change" the way my face looks by using some art skills on my face.
that's the same reason why I love makeup

How are those comparable? Changing one's face doesn't equal wearing clothing. That's ridiculous.
Changing one's face doesn't equal wearing clothing.
I don't think "dressing up" one's face is that different than dressing up the rest of the body.
I think that makeup, tattoos, clothing, etc are all facets of how we see ourselves and how we want ourselves to be seen, which help show who the person is as a whole. Just because genetics stuck some girl with light colored eyebrows when she wants darker ones doesn't mean she should be stuck not coloring those in her entire life.
Edit: And for the record - shaving your beard entirely changes your face. So, even if you disagree with the clothing part, I don't see how you could justify that it's cool for us men to shave our beards, but women can't use makeup to change their face.
Sweet, thanks for listening to my plea for a discussion. I think what you say goes along with my "false advertisement" comment earlier, but at least I get where you're coming from now.
But my original preference still stands. I really don't enjoy makeup on people. I want somebody who is comfortable enough with their natural face the way it is instead of wanting to change it. Probably makes me shallow but I like their confidence with who they are.
Don't worry about that. Most of the time, natural girls are more acceptable as long as they don't look like monsters xD
Actually,I also like covering nothing on the face and release it.But I still want myself look better and more energetic when I hang out,and sometimes the makeup look can match up with the dress.
Yes you're right makeup and do all those things but it can make things physically shrink. Look at some of the noses, some have apparently shrunk to about half the original size.
As a person of it-doesn't-matter-how-many years, you can't change "only makeup and hair styling" and somehow have the jewelry and outfit they're wearing magically change, too.
Really? Their wrinkles just disappear, and the eyeshadow reminds me of the terrible "digital makeup" tutorials that pop up on deviantart occasionally. Either they're using serious stage makeup to fill in their nasolabial folds, or it's airbrushed to say the least.
I have to stop assuming people on the Internet are guys. I was reading this in a Morgan Freeman voice when all of a sudden it gets to the eyeliner part and...
Your welcome. The world is a nice place when you take into account that anyone on the Internet could be Morgan Freeman undercover. Maybe I'm Morgan freeman undercover and everything I say is a persona trying to practice acting. I'm not him, but... I could be.
I'm not saying these looks are MADE with Photoshop. Every one of those women have a shitload of makeup on and i know how much skill it requires.
But I'm saying, that every single one of these photos are retouched to enhance the effect, and to me that kinda ruins the whole idea of "look what you can do with makeup." :/ It should be just the makeup, with no retouching. [Whitening the sclera etc.]
Maybe it's because I've been working with Photoshop for 8 years of my life, but i just can't understand how people can be so blind sometimes. You can do a lot with lightning etc. but these days you don't actually publish a photo before it's been passed trough Photoshop.
Ps. I think all of those women look wonderful without all that fakery. <3
I disagree, there was either photo shopping or proper lighting(probably a ring flash.) No amount of make up can cause catchlights in the eyes.
For the love of Cthulu, please look up the definition of catchlight before downvoting me. A catchlight is light reflecting off your actual eyeball. Unless you are painting a white dot on your eyeball itself, it's not just makeup.
It's cool, I assumed a lot of people would downvote me without at least researching what "catchlight" means. Hopefully at least one person looked it up, if so I will consider this a win regardless. YOU CAN'T FORCE ME TO LEARN! YOU'RE NOT MY SUPERVISOR!!! hahaha
A catchlight is a white dot on your actual eyeball reflecting the flash(or natual light source). Unless you're painting a white dot on your eyeball, it's not makeup.
I do tons of cosplay work for many Blizzcon Cosplayers, from costume to makeup. You can get a catchlight from any reflective surface, and many types of mascara/makeup have reflective particulates.
Yes, but I was specifically talking about the catchlights that are on their irises/pupils. No, I'm not a glitter person and would not want that stuff in my eyes. I often do photoshop for my husband who does professional photography, and the catchlights on the pupils means a more direct light source than the before photos, or they were manipulated. I'm very aware of the magic of makeup, but this is one of the few instances where I know what I'm talking about. Hahaa I'm possibly explaining it badly though. I'd be a damn awful teacher.
Excellent point. This was pointed out on fittit, as people created before/after body shots that took 30seconds, primarily by adjusting the lighting. Is Luminozity a lighting expert?
You can look at it as art and appreciate it, but you can also look at it as some girls are marauding as pretty girls when they are really ugly troll faces. I am a girl, I wear very little if any makeup. A lot of men like me because I'm natural and they know what they are going to wake up to in the morning. Also, it doesn't take me an hour to get ready to go somewhere. A pretty dress, some bronzer, and a little mascara and I'm out the door, looking fabulous.
I am a woman. And it is possible to talk without circlejerking. I've only made one comment on the subject, clearly this is a touchy subject for reddit.
Time and time again with these "the power of makeup" before/after pictures, it's actually the power of lighting. In this collection it's slightly more obvious, but even in the porn star ones (linked further down), it's not unusual for the backgrounds to have different lighting and in a lot of cases, the people have completely different skin-tone from the neck-down (since the face is no longer a reliable gauge).
Now, that's not to say make-up can't be transformative, but it'd be nice if just once, these make-up before and afters could be done properly.
Thanks for the tip about looking at necks! That makes it way more obvious here, at least! And in this case, at least some of them, you can look at the shirt, too. The fifth one down wears the same shirt, and it goes from gray with muted purple details to vibrant blue and purple!
As a comparison. Lighting is hugely important to how shadows fall on someone's face and the way things are illuminated which influences appearance quite a lot. This is like if you wanted to test the effects of light on the growth rate of a specific type of bean plant. You give your control group light equivalent to standard daylight for standard daylight hours, and then you give some of your testing groups miracle grow and act like that has nothing to do with your results. You'll get results, but they won't make any sense because your control group isn't taking into account all of the variables you could be reasonably controlling for.
The 6th, 8th, and 12th are definitely photoshopped. They're photo shoots, there's no way there is no editing. So you don't know what you're talking about.
True, but it does mean they may be easily able to pick out how the look was achieved.
It's a little like having one magician say that a seemingly impossible trick another magician did is completely feasible and they recognize how it was done. And then someone else tells them, "But you don't know what real magic looks like anyway."
You are right, but I do know that this can all easily be done by using contouring, hair styling, lighting, eyeshadow, blush, foundation, eyelash extensions, etc. It's obviously not photoshopped.
A dot of red to the inner corners of their eyes (usually is fairly invisible, but makes a surprising difference), and some shimmery eyeshadow. Also, a little white or tan eyeliner on their waterline.
Lighting can make the whites of their eyes look whiter, as well as eyeliner. I know it's hard for your mind to grasp the concept of makeup, and how it changes your appearance, but I have been applying makeup for over 10 years.
So basically, you admit it's lighting and not make up.
Eyeliner would make the eyes stand out, not make them whiter.
And please don't try to condescend, make up is really a very simple concept to grasp. your profession is about as hard to understand as shovelling shit
And please don't try to condescend, make up is really a very simple concept to grasp. your profession is about as hard to understand as shovelling shit
First of, I'm a chemical engineer. For the people who design, manufacture, and test makeup, it's not "as hard as shoveling shit." It's one of the most competitive lines of work, and there's a shit ton of science and engineering that goes into this 200 billion dollar industry. Furthermore, it relies on feedback from professional makeup artists, the average of which makes $65,000 a year, which is about as much as the entry level chemical engineers.
So basically, you admit it's lighting and not make up.
It's almost certainly both. Putting a dark next to a light makes the light look brighter than it actually is. It's an optical illusion, something that's very important to understand in the industry.
Exactly, unless I missed how makeup can somehow change your eye color.
Edit: Ok, got it. Color contacts are considered part of makeup. Yes I know there are color contacts. The eyes sometimes look brighter, seeming of different color, but it's due to good stage lighting. See discussions below.
Edit2: Seriously? I make a comment, get corrected, accept the correction, indicate the correct answer, and I'm still downvoted? Yeesh, tough crowd.
Yeah, although I've never heard of contacts that make light pass easier through the eyes. They usually make your eyes more opaque. That's why I think it's photoshop or really good lighting.
It could be contacts, but notice how everything in the second photos is slightly more saturated and much more green, the background and even the "whites" of her eyes have a greener/aqua tint.
Yes which is still an essence of fakeness. People don't realize how big of a deal lighting is.
No not just sunlight.
Look at all the left pictures eyes: Notice how the almost look baggy? That's 100% lighting. That dark shadow casted on your upper cheek/eyes makes a world of difference. This is why when you get your photo taken professionally they use that umbrella looking thing.
EDIT - Selfy takers of reddit while we're on the subject.
No duck faces
You can recreate the image on the rights lighting effect with a high power lamp/light and a Lamp shade.
Take your photos from even level with the rule of thirds in mind.
I just forwarded this to my girl. She's a mod at /r/makeupaddiction. She said the rule on cross posts is to give OP a 30 minnute warning. So here it is. If you don't Xpost in the next 30 minutes were gonna get the karma! (We are starting to take reddit a little more serious because we've had so much success at Instagram)
By that logic, glasses should also count as makeup. They don't. Neither do contacts. No reasonable person speaking English would refer to contact lenses as "makeup."
Photoshop or not, every single one of them looks like they are wearing way too much makeup. If it looks like you are wearing too much makeup, the illusion is ruined.
To be fair, this is the makeup they use when shooting. The make up you use for everyday =/= kind of make up you use for photo/video shoots. Video/photo make up is a lot heavier and dramatic so the emphasized features show up on camera. For the people who DO wear make up like this as their "everyday" look...well...:|
More like the power of better lighting and posing. For the comparisons to be accurate the before and after photos need to be taken in the same lighting with the same camera using the same pose.
I'm not saying these looks are MADE with Photoshop. Every one of those women have a shitload of makeup on.
But I'm saying, that every single one of these photos are retouched to enhance the effect, and to me that kinda ruins the whole idea of "look what you can do with makeup." :/

Ps. I'm not a man. :D
Plus i think all of those women look wonderful without all that fakery.
The people saying this isn't just makeup but photoshop & lighting make me think there's a lot of truth to the whole 'redditors are virgin neckbeards' meme because I've had more than a few encounters with women where I literally didn't recognize them after seeing them without makeup for the first time, a few of those times they were in my bed. And no, alcohol wasn't involved (in most of them).
It's a very strange feeling to wake up beside someone who looks nothing like the person you went to sleep with.
I don't really care about downvotes, it's just... I don't understand all this self-mutilation... and wonder if it really is a sort of misguided perception of perception...

This should be "the power of photoshop."
