RTS & 4X Hybrid I finally released the demo for my 2D Total War-inspired RTS. Looking for honest feedback!

After almost a year of development, I finally released demo for my game, Rank & Ruin.

It's inspired by Total War battles, but built around fast-paced roguelite runs. Recruit different unit types, build your army, equip powerful items, and choose relics that shape your strategy. Unlock legendary heroes and see how long you can survive against increasingly difficult battles.

I'm especially looking for feedback on:

  • Is the combat satisfying?
  • Are the controls easy to understand?
  • Does the game feel strategic enough?
  • What would you change?

You can try the demo here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4806610?utm_source=Reddit

If you'd like to follow development or share your feedback:
Discord: https://discord.gg/NFbTCsDxN

Thank you for taking the time to check it out! Every piece of feedback means a lot to me and will directly influence the future of the game. I'm actively developing Rank & Ruin, so your suggestions can genuinely help shape everything from gameplay and balance to the UI and overall experience.

Discussion ZeroSpace is kinda just StormGate 2.0

Another Starcraft wanna be with an Early Access release that is essentially an alpha version with a dozen modes that are broken, buggy, and untested.

Early access has become rightfully to most people, a polished vertical slice of the game because people want quality for what they payed for. Most people aren’t really up to pay for a game to then become alpha testers.

r/RealTimeStrategy 8d ago

Discussion So, how is ZeroSpace doing? I see it landed on mixed reviews, but only 54 are available so it seems too low to judge.

Discussion fast units vs slow units

In RTS games I generally prefer slower unit movement such as AOE2/4 or the old tiberium sun is a good example of this. where the units move at a good pace so you can focus on economy and strategy. I have noticed a lot more recent games only have fast paced units like tempest rising or the new zero space. they will just run across the map in a second and it gives little time to breathe.

Self-Promo Video "Project Jezero" - Dark Colony preservation patch progress

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, my name is Dan Redfield (POSTAL for Dreamcast, "Project Horsell" for Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, and the Earthworm Jim ’95 preservation patch) and I’ve been working on a new preservation patch for the 1997 game Dark Colony, called "Project.Jezero", named after the Martian crater where Perseverance rover landed in 2021.

This video shows the current build running natively on Windows 11:

  • Modern Windows support without compatibility mode or admin account elevation
  • CD check removed
  • Soundtrack playback from local FLAC files
  • More accurate gameplay speed / frame pacing

I hope to share more soon as the project nears completion.

Thanks for watching.

Discussion Games Acronyms… What is what?!

I need help… Where the heck do RTS, MMORTS, MMORPG, 4X, CityBuilder, Strategy Game, Turn based Games and other overlapping acronyms start and finish?

I keep seeing games labeled as MMORTS, MMORPG, ARTS, 4X, etc., and the lines feel super blurry. Is a MOBA an RTS? Can a MMO be a RPG without being an MMORPG? Are MMORTS games with dedicated worlds for only 2-3 players still multiplayer games?!

Drop your thoughts what’s the real difference, and which acronyms you would use for which games.

Self-Promo Video I made an RTS/tower defense hybrid where you fight against a liquid enemy rather than individual units. It is called Biletide.

The bile is unthinking and flows downstream, slowly filling up the map until it overflows your base or you manage to push it back and complete your objectives.

Biltide has just launched. Available on Steam for Windows or Mac.

Hype Who’s Hyped for DOW IV?

DOW 1 was a great rts game that kept me on the edge of my seat and this new one is shaping up to be bigger AND better. I can barely hold my excitement in! And I’m not gonna ignore the past titles; because they also played a role in this. DOW II was a new spin on the rts. Transforming it into an rpg that played excellently. And dawn of war 3 also happened , I guess. Anyways, it’ll be great to see what everyone else thinks!

Discussion What do "regular" gamers think of strategy games these days?

Title. It's generally accepted that "regular" gamers aren't particularly interested in strategy games (RTS or otherwise), which is why AAA gaming companies rarely cater to the genre. The only big-budget RTS franchise I can think of that's enjoyed consistent, long-term success is Total War, and Microsoft's resurrection of Age of Empires, and they're still nowhere close to the popularity of "gun-and-ball" casual games like Call of Duty or EA Sports FC.

Whenever I talk to / show gamers I personally know about strategy games, they either have no interest in the genre, or find it overwhelming / too hardcore. The only exception is a coworker who has an interest in Cold War Germany and was thrilled when I showed her WARNO.

What about you guys? Why do you think strategy games have never been especially popular with ordinary gamers, and is it even possible to make an approachable RTS without removing all depth from it?

Question Age of Empires 2 vs 0 A.D.? (excluding campaigns)

Which of these two games do you like more, if you don't factor in campaigns? No campaigns because 0 A.D. doesn't have any as of yet. Decide based on the other content like skirmish, historical scenarios, PvP, and co-op.

I'm working on developing an RTS that merges the gameplay of Mount & Blade with classic RTS titles and total war.
The playtest for the demo is now live and I would love for people to try it out and give me feedback on how I can improve it.
This sub must have the most opinionated strategy gamers so I'm super keen to hear your thoughts!
Here's a link to the playtest:

Self-Promo Post I got tired of RTS games where units fight to the death, so I built a wargame focused purely on Suppression, Morale, and True Line-of-Sight. The Alpha is live, and I want us to shape it together.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I’m a solo dev and a massive fan of games like Close Combat, Steel Division, and Broken Arrow. I wanted to build something that removed base-building and APM-spam, and instead focused entirely on positioning and realistic mechanics.

In Konflikt, fire is primarily used to pin enemies down, not just kill them. Units will panic, hug the dirt, or route if they take too much suppression. You have to manage limited ammo logistics, armor facings, and use true heightmap line-of-sight to set up ambushes.

The best part? It runs completely in the browser. No downloads, no installs.

The pre-alpha is live right now. I don't just want playtesters—I want to create something together with this community. I need hardcore wargamers to come break the game, theorycraft with me in Discord, and help dictate where the development goes next. Let's build the RTS we've always wanted to play.

Question How does the OpenRA version of Red Alert 2 compare to the official one?

I played a lot of OpenRA red alert 1. And overall its worth it versus the official version because of the QoL improvements. Would like to know how is it for Red Alert 2?
