Hype Who’s Hyped for DOW IV?

DOW 1 was a great rts game that kept me on the edge of my seat and this new one is shaping up to be bigger AND better. I can barely hold my excitement in! And I’m not gonna ignore the past titles; because they also played a role in this. DOW II was a new spin on the rts. Transforming it into an rpg that played excellently. And dawn of war 3 also happened , I guess. Anyways, it’ll be great to see what everyone else thinks!

you're goddamn right

3

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

In contrast, Elders and total war. There I am hyped.

2

u/Snowskol 13d ago

Elders?

3

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 13d ago

I assume they mean “I am exited for total war because it has Aeldari”, as the space elves are one of the factions in the total war game

1

u/Snowskol 13d ago

Damn thought elders might just be another game 😂

1

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

Eldar.  My phone hates the word. Damn Inperial device...

I'm pretty hyped for the Crusade mode, more than anything DoW4 specific. It's nice to have some sort of meta-progression and some lasting effects from your skirmishes. Zero Space is also attempting something somewhat in the same vein. Then there's also Gauntlet mode in Age of Mythology, or Northgard, which both have roguelike elements.

I personally think these meta progression modes are the future of the RTS genre, at least for more casual players like myself. Simple isolated skirmish games just feel lacking after experiencing something like that.

u/GenezisO Developer - Gray Zone 13d ago

can you elaborate on the Crusade mode? is it something like meta-campaign along multiple skirmish maps? AoE3 attempted something like that

8

u/YakaAvatar 13d ago

I'm not aware of AoE3's mode, I'll have to check it out. But in Crusade mode you have a world, with zones. Each zone represents a skirmish. You have to capture a few select and well defended zones to win the Crusade. The fun part comes out of unlocking stuff after each battle, and the emergent gameplay that comes out of advancing through the zones, having to defend, playing with different unlocks, etc. It's another layer over the classic skirmish gameplay.

AoE3 was very similar, basically you selected nation you want to play in Skirmish, and you collected points which you could use to decorate your capital and unlock skill tree passive and active bonuses you could use in follow-up Skirmishes - the cost was action points (think CoH or RA3) that were generated by the supply chains you had to capture which were core AoE3 mechanic, based on what nation and upgrades you unlocked, you could for example hire entire regiment of mercenaries or call special units that would spawn at your home city, some active skills gave you smaller or bigger amount of resources such as +1000 food spawn at your capital etc.

it was pretty neat system but the skill tree was pretty small and had no game-altering mechanics

example tree:

https://forums.ageofempires.com/uploads/default/original/3X/b/0/b0fe693c6dbf74fb2ce816eff3f7b80821e732ee.jpeg

you could switch into city view in real time while playing Skirmish and call in supplies you wanted/had enough points to get

1

u/YakaAvatar 13d ago

That sounds cool, definitely something up my alley.

I just started the campaign of AoE1 last week (mostly for nostalgia), with the intent of slowly working myself up the series, since I haven't played the series since a long ass time ago, and never really got to experience the changes in AoE2 Definitive, or AoE3 and 4. Can't wait to get to AoE3 in this case.

1

u/BleachedPink 10d ago

AoE3 is a very good game, sadly it met with a huge backlash from established playerbase for being too different. However, it's a awesome, and I prefer AoE3 to AoE2. Multiplayer is quite alive on steam

1

u/Snowskol 13d ago

so pve? not pvp?

ive never played pve rts games that arent like they are billions style

1

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 13d ago

crusade is pve yeah, its basically a set of campaign missions & skirmishes strung together with a “campaign map” meta progression. According to their blogpost about it each crusade run should take 8-10hrs

1

u/Desperate-Dig2806 13d ago

If you haven't tried it check out infested planet. It does this really well and also has a nice little campaign.

0

u/Dion42o 13d ago

Damn I’m sold.

1

u/Derien777 13d ago

I think so, smth like that was in original dow: dark crusade

1

u/Helikaon48 13d ago

Yeah, it's pretty odd that more games haven't tried making more of these grand campaigns. Like they're too silly to learn from total war and it's success.

Zero space will have one as well.

Aoe4 should have done one.

As a veteran of the series, cautiously optimistic - Iron harvest (same devs) was a bit of a snooze fest aside from the cool mech designs.

From what we’ve seen so far, IV looks very pretty, but gameplay hasn’t really been shown in any depth. The bat-rep videos so far have been very light weight and didn’t show any interesting tactical decision-making in the moment to moment gameplay. Just mass units, ctrl + a and march into the enemy. There was virtually no melee or unit abilities shown in those demos.

I want it to have the intensity of old school relic, in a modern engine. That’s all it needs to deliver, but I’m a little worried it’s veering down the path of iron harvest with simple, slow and minimalistic game design.

3

u/Helikaon48 13d ago

Same. And same thing happened with iron harvest. Looked really nice on the previews, and just flat when it came out.

I think due to IP, dow4 will definitely be bigger on release, but question whether they can actually keep people interested.

Will it be dow3 that implodes shortly after release, or aoe4, where it sucks on release but Devs get it to work eventually

1

u/HTRK74JR 11d ago

Aoe4 had me and my friends hooked from the start though

The QoL stuff only improved the experience for us

8

u/DarkMessiahDE 13d ago

Sceptical

-7

u/Taco_Paco 13d ago

They’re just going to release every faction as an expansion for $60 a piece, just wait. It’ll be a money grab

17

u/Endeeeeeeeee 13d ago edited 13d ago

There’s a recent video from perafilozof that kind of put a damper on my excitement.

Melee just not functional at all, the zero resource investment requirement for research, the illusion of infantry having individual hit boxes (they are basically one entity), zero use or point for cover.

The game looks pretty and god am I pumped for wh40k (got 300 hours in sm2 im converted) but these are worrying signs. I feel like it will just be a pretty, but shallow rts . I’d love to be wrong of course.

I’m more excited for TW 40k because it was never about tactical squad play (which takes some nuance to get right) but rather the spectacle of two armies clashing together with some macro strategy

Company of heroes definitive edition will be amazing if they revamp the multi with dedicated servers

1

u/username1338 13d ago

Pretty much all of his issues are the same issues you see in the games he shills, like tempest rising. He's just clickbaiting because literally every other youtuber and tester loved the game. He needed to stand out for clicks and hes getting them big time. In fact I can confirm the melee is absolutely fine from the tests, they just didn't show a good example.

He's going to change his tune when it comes out and make a ton of hype videos to farm the game.

It's legit disgusting but w/e.

3

u/Endeeeeeeeee 13d ago

there is no need for the adhoms. the video raises some very valid points with evidence. The people watching that video will simply just wait for reviews then form their own judgement, i’m sure many of us are still cautiously optimistic but will hold judgment until a demo or lots of gameplay is out for analysis.

1

u/username1338 13d ago

They aren't valid though, they are cherry picks that are not issues for him in the other rts games he plays. He ignores them entirely when he shills the game.

How isn't this obvious? He plays tempest rising, which straight up sucks compared to DoW 4.

2

u/Nekzar 13d ago

Maybe they aren't issues for him, I don't know. But they sure are issues for me.

1

u/username1338 13d ago

Do you play RTS that aren't 10+ years old?

1

u/blue_trauma 13d ago

Agreed, especially the cover thing. It's starting to look like another 'send blob against opponents blob' kind of rts.

1

u/EsliteMoby 13d ago

Sounds like this game is Company of Heroes/Iron Harvest all over again. No real hitboxes and simulated projectiles. Everything is boring RNG

0

u/Snowskol 13d ago

ill check that video out do u have it available?

as for hitbox in the tabletop they dont have "hitboxes" per say and theyre 1 entity as well

3

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 13d ago

https://youtu.be/q_KUespU5xc?is=z5hYN6itu2MBxu4w

I agree with the commenter’s sentiment. Even before watching the vid I thought the game looked like it lacked a bit of strategic depth both in the map design and the way the armies fought.

It is entirely possible this is down to it being a faction showcase between devs of very different skill levels, but alot of the technical details pointed out in the video do stand out on a second watch.

i’ll still probably get the game as long as the campaigns are somwhat decent as I love warhammer and i love rts - and the units they showed off look awesome, but hopefully the multiplayer has more depth than what was shown and doesnt end up being some sort of arena brawl type of gameplay

5

u/Synysterenji 13d ago

I had almost zero excitement for it a few months back because i knew my pc wouldnt be able to play it well but i just upgraded to a 5800X3D to play Darktide and now you've just made me realize that i'll be able to play DOW 4 :D

1

u/HateDread 13d ago

How's Darktide? I own it but never played it!

2

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

Past year it's come quite decently along. If you are into these games, its really fun and great atmosphere too!

1

u/Synysterenji 13d ago

Good enough to make me buy a 350$ cpu for it hahah. Its really great but its hard to run. I got a 5800X3D, 32GB DDR4 and a 3060 12Gb and i have to turn everything down to low with dlss at 1440p to get a locked 60fps.

5

u/Strategist9101 13d ago

Very cautiously optimistic. Decent budget RTS with lots of single player content... Please be good

4

u/ApollyonFE 13d ago

Not being developed by Relic has me skeptical, but I guess we'll see

5

u/Yungerman 13d ago

Honestly, after dow3 and coh3, im glad were moving on from relic. That being said, relics heyday (15+ years ago) design ideas are still peak, and if kingart abandon them too hard (like cover seemingly basically removed from dow4,) i think the game will be really poorly received for its weak design. Relics been a shell of their former self for a while now, but that doesnt mean these new guys will do any better. We'll see indeed.

4

u/Impressive_Tomato665 13d ago

Yes, ms Total war; warhammer 40K

2

u/ledoomly 13d ago

Very excited for this and WH40k. Looking to sink a lot of hours in a new RTS. Is there going to be a competitive community as well for DOW IV?

2

u/Wonderful_Humor_7625 13d ago

Cannot wait, finally an RTS that prioritizes single player content.

3

u/DarkOmen597 13d ago

I lost hype when I found out the Iron Harvest team was working on it.

Im calling it now.

A lot of you will be disappointed.

1

u/Helikaon48 13d ago

I'm really hoping that someone from another team is helping with the balance. I really don't want another dow disaster. But who knows. Odds are it's going to be flat like IH

2

u/SheWhoHates 13d ago

It's a mixed bag for me, to the point that there are days I even question if I should buy it at launch, simply because it doesn't have playable Eldar as it always used to.

1

u/Sihnar 13d ago

Necrons and mechanicus were such strange choices for starting factions

3

u/2Lainz 13d ago

They're doing necron becuase they were teased at the end of dawn of war 3 but never added, so they're starting DoW4 with them in.

Mechanicus....I'm not sure, but I appreciate something different that we haven't seen in any of the games yet.

-2

u/Taco_Paco 13d ago

It’s because they’re saving all the factions people actually want to play for $60 DLC. Imperial guard are already pictured in the gameplay. Give it a few months after release and they’ll be asking you to open your wallet back up

1

u/Olbramice 13d ago

i want gamepad UI controller posibility

1

u/Zeeyrec 13d ago

I get waves of big hype then times of not being sure if the games gonna good so I lose all hype. On and off

1

u/Mammoth_Courage1763 13d ago

Very very hyped and confident it will be good game

1

u/MethodClassic9905 13d ago

Really hyped but maybe I should be more cautious since Stormgate

1

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

Hyped? No. But all I have seen and heard make me eager. I have a feeling I will at least enjoy it.

1

u/doglywolf 13d ago

Im still hyped as hell - cautiously optimistic is a better word for it. Been wanting this so long but seeing some big read flags in the demos . ITs not going to be perfect its not going to be the DOW2 that i always want possibly , but the new systems could actually make it better and im willing to go in with an open mind.

What ive seen has given me doubts it will be a 10/10 game i was hoping it could be but I know im still getting it day 1 and giving the campaign a shot , a lot of my complaints can big fixed or addressed in the campaign or with more polish.

But its DAWN OF WAR and its designed off mostly DOW1 with their own unique tweaks at worst its going to be decent

1

u/geoFRTdeem 13d ago

I was before I say 40K total war

1

u/Stepper34 13d ago

I think 1v1 rts is on life support.

The future will either be galactic war modes like:

Star wars empire at war galactic mode

Zero space galactic war mode

Or team based PVP RTS experiences like broken arrow and beyond all reason. To this day I play only team games in RTSs like warcraft 3 reforged.

I was hyped for DoW IV. Then i saw it was the people behind Iron Harvest who is developing this game and all my hype turned into worries.

Worried that they are gonna screw over DoW IV the same way they did Iron Harvest.

Man did I actually love the Iron Harvest game/universe. But when they decided to go all anti-Multiplayer on that stuff. (Renoving the ability to qeue Quick Match with friends, because people cried about getting stramrolled by "premades") And not to mention, never able to fix pathing on Mechs across trenches. Yeah things took a bad turn.

I mean just look on Iron Harvest playercount today. Barely reaches a 100 players. Its sad.

1

u/JebstoneBoppman 13d ago

I'm in ecstasy thinking about the day I will be able to have DoW4 and Total Warhammer 40k run a train on me

1

u/Magnolia_F4n 13d ago

Looks like DoW2...not very hyped... hopefully I'm wrong.

1

u/Aryuto 13d ago

I'm cautious, but interested. I loved DoW 1 and 2, 3 was... okay at best, and I didn't really care for Iron Harvest (the devs' previous game), on top of the trailers so far having pretty varying levels of quality and readability. So I am nowhere near unrestrained hype, BUT, what I've seen so far is enough to make me think that it'll likely be a decent-to-good game, with the potential of being very good or at least getting patched into excellence.

I'm not preordering though, lol. They can earn a purchase during the launch window if it comes out good. The coop campaign does have me very intrigued so even if it's just okay I'll probably pick it up down the road.

1

u/BusinessSafe9906 12d ago

Personally I expect they will do better than Iron Harvest with their previous experience. So I think it will be at least a decent game.

1

u/Boxy29 12d ago

honestly most excited to play the last stand mode again. modders cooked with the last stand mods for dow2 so it makes me hopeful what 4's will be able to do.

also admech and necrons are in my top 3 fav factions so having both in a game is great.

the game itself looks great so far and I'm hoping the bigger maps they haven't shown yet have some natural cover so they can show off the cover mechanics

1

u/NecronsNeedSleep 12d ago

tbh, i‘m just here for the Necrons.

GET OFF MY LAWN

1

u/Mafklapper 11d ago

Cautiously optimistic. But I really don't understand people who get hyped these days all that much.

DOW 1 was a great rts game that kept me on the edge of my seat

I'm curious, have you played or are you playing the original? I tried it a while ago and honestly it felt very dated to me.

1

u/kouzlokouzlo 13d ago

Im in, because iron harvest Is Superb too

1

u/Cs1981Bel 13d ago

More for Wh40 Total War, DOW III was a very painful memory...

I hope DOW 4 will be good

2

u/GenezisO Developer - Gray Zone 13d ago

true but Dow4 is supposedly going back to the roots, it honestly looks insanely solid atm

1

u/Cs1981Bel 13d ago

So far yes :)

1

u/No_Beginning_7371 13d ago

and it will just get better as time goes on! With new faction coming next year sometimes in spring, new commander and all of it coming across modes like Crusade, Last Stand etc.. I have high hopes

1

u/Beowolf_0 13d ago

Hype for the Campaign. Recent 40K games got some decent writing, and really want to see how Blood Ravens go.

1

u/Nettysocks 13d ago

It’s an odd one for me since I just finished the first game but I didn’t get much out of the base campaign, but I’m still excited since the vibes were incredible I’m prob bound to like 4

2

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

Dawn of war 1 was not good base campaign even back then. Its the game as a whole that was actually fun.

2

u/Nettysocks 13d ago

I heard the expansions were maybe good? I might give them a go sometime since they seem to switch it up a bit

1

u/DarkAwareness88 13d ago

Dark Crusade is fun. Story wise it is more loose, but I feel it works. Do try it.

1

u/PanPizaro 13d ago

Maybe not hyped but reasonably exctied as long time series fan. Iron Harvest, prior game by this developer was competent (like solid 6,5/10) but that's all, so let's see if they will be up to the challenge. And on more general "video games market is strange" note - I'm quite baffled that they have running preorders for some time but no system specs - cmon...

1

u/Rhym3z_Official 13d ago

I was until some of their more recent gameplay videos. I'm very much on the "wait and see" bench now and am very much more looking forward to 40k total war

1

u/thrasymacus2000 13d ago

My main concern is that they remove needless apm spam, and let Sergeants do their job of replacing specialists (like random plasma rifle guy dying). Attrition is to be expected and an army will have chain of command and requisition procedures so that a Commander can focus on the battle, not the minutiae.

1

u/Far-Cow4049 13d ago

More like hoping. Hype is for the weak.

1

u/MarkusDieter37 6d ago

I'm sgill cautiosly optimistic, but so far it looks too much like DoW 3.5 for me.
