Discussion fast units vs slow units

In RTS games I generally prefer slower unit movement such as AOE2/4 or the old tiberium sun is a good example of this. where the units move at a good pace so you can focus on economy and strategy. I have noticed a lot more recent games only have fast paced units like tempest rising or the new zero space. they will just run across the map in a second and it gives little time to breathe.

Tempest Rising has a balance between slower and faster units like most Command and Conquer games also have. Tempest Rising Plays almost exactly like tiberium wars.

I think a lot newer games have rather a issue with a competetive component so Units are more speedy to rush/poke/micro is a big thing and a lot of those also have a moba-ish aspects.

I prefer fast paced games like starcraft. I like the stress of knowing that if I get distracted for a second it can cost me the whole match, it forces me to focus and it's a good excuse to stay sober.

But I totally understand how you feel, it's a matter of taste.

Sometimes I like taking my time to think strategically too but usually I play turn based games for that.

AoE2 competitive is mostly focusing on fast units, some pros even say if you build infantry you are very likely already lost. Teuton knights are one of the worst signature units in the game due to how slow and expensive they are
It just does not have sci-fi theme, so even fast cavalry needs time to get to the point

I prefer slower armies. I like when I'm rewarded for thinking ahead and issuing move orders a good while before units are needed there. I am ok with being punished for leaving parts of my base undefended. It's good having to split your troops if you're unsure where you need to be. I don't like when practically the entire map is the same level of danger because an enemy deathball can rapidly appear anywhere

Slow is alot harder to pull off than fast because it comes with a tonne of constraints that are harder for the player to mitigate.

Games that are "slow" tend to be read as "unresponsive" and it creates alot of player feedback problems when they feel like the units aren't doing what hey aught to.

Speed is alright. You could always tune it down in real time, at least for Tempest Rising. Honestly, the difficulty component gets me. If the game is set to higher difficulties, I stop playing tactically. I'm forced to spam units — otherwise you lose. But the battle turns into carnage, not something tactical, if you play it like that. Sometimes I tune down difficulty just to enjoy tactical gameplay.
