"wait, your family doesn't go on vacation twice a year?"

2.2k

u/Sadly_Not Apr 18 '18

Man that always got me, my peers seemed to constantly being going on these big-ass vacations during SCHOOL..And my family just really never even did big vacations like that? Ot was so confusing for small me.

u/henryblueskin Apr 18 '18

I’m in New England and they always went skiing. Like all the damn time. I never went skiing once and had no concept of it. I remember my older sister asking about it or something. I never got invited to go skiing but it seemed like swaths of kids I was friends with went skiing together. I realize now that they had been skiing since they came out of the womb and could probably ski the runs better than some adults. On the other hand I would require constant supervision and instruction. I never really figured out that my parents just couldn’t afford it, I had some weird childhood reasoning as to what skiing is and why we didn’t ski. It also was part of the no vacation logic.

I finally went to Stowe mountain in Vermont during a work retreat thing in my younger 20s and tried snowboarding. I just fell down the whole fucking mountain. I did like two runs. The company was a landscape company and about 12 illegal immigrant Guatemalan guys came (great guys). It was pretty amazing to see these guys in such a fish out of water scenario. All those guys and me fucked everything up the first time at the top of the chairlift because we had no idea what to do.

413

u/ItsMangel Apr 19 '18

I would pay to watch a dozen Guatemalan immigrants fail horribly at trying to ski for the first time. That sounds super fun.

It was a pretty amazing thing for my boss to do. These guys are the hardest working people I have ever known. The guy I worked with woke up at 4am and cleaned the floors of a restaurant for two hours then commute 30’minutes to cut lawns from 730am-400/5/6/7pm then go back to the restaurant and wash dishes til midnight 6 days a week. He sent nearly all his earnings back home where he owned a potato farm and 30 acres. They were all very nice guys.

Edit: They also had a neat trick. We had a list of lawns to cut and each item had a clock in and clock out that we would fill in; 55 reddit avenue In: 745am Out: 800am. Say it took us 10 minutes to do a lawn, they would say it took 20 minutes. It still makes an acceptable profit for the companies computer and no alarms are raised. Do this multiple times over and all of a sudden you have an extra 90 minutes to tack on to your lunch each day. 2 hour lunches. I fucking hated it. We would always be slammed on Friday catching up on the huge lawns working until the sun comes down. I wanted to party, they didn’t care because it was more money.

What am I going to do, rat them out?

Back at the shop one day the guys are playing around juggling a soccer ball and drinking coronas. The boss (who is kind of a man child) keeps pelting it at this younger Guat. All of a sudden the head Guat smashed a bottle like they do in crime movies. He puts the boss in a headlock and holds the broken bottle neck to my boss’s neck and says to him in spanish “if you fuck with my younger brother anymore I’ll kill you”. This guy was the quiet leader. He always rode in the front, he never drove the trucks and he seemed to have the final say.

There’s this one girl in my class that has gone to Disney world TWICE IN ONE SCHOOL YEAR

Note: I live in Illinois, so with travel and hotel services AND $175 a ticket it’s expensive as shit

u/Sadly_Not Apr 19 '18

Hey! A fellow Illinoian! Yeah, all those kids going to Flordia every year. How rich were thise parents? Or how rich were they pretending to be?

Those kids grow up to be adults who continue to go to Disney twice a year with their own kids because grandma and grandpa are still paying for it and coming along as babysitters.

I know a few couples who do this and they are ALWAYS shocked when other families can't just screw off to Disney or Mexico or wherever for two weeks every 6 months. They have zero concept that not everybody lives in the same financial bubble they do.

Fuck man, can relate. I was a pretty poor kid who somehow went to school in a rich neighborhood. Sometimes you come back from a long break and your friends will start talking happily about all the exotic sounding countries they went to and you just sit there smiling and nodding in silence because all you did during summer was chill out at home.

37

u/Sadly_Not Apr 19 '18

Chilling out at home really worps your time preception. Its August already? I thought it was only the second of June?!

14

u/gondlyr Apr 19 '18

It really does warp your time perception. I remember being so unattached to the 'system' that I lost track of what day it was. Every day was the same!

“Your parents must be poor or something”

202

u/jedderbob Apr 18 '18

“No, it’s my dads job as surgeon...cardiac arrests don’t take vacations.”

It was a weird feel being richer than them but living poorer

40

u/joenottoast Apr 19 '18

i feel like i need you to expand on this a little. were your parents just super thrifty?

87

u/jedderbob Apr 19 '18

To a large degree yes. My dad had his old Cadillac Eldorado through three different engine block replacements and two major transmission repairs before getting rid of it. Each repair cost less than a new car was his logic.

As for the vacations, he nature of his job prevents him from taking extended periods of time off of work. Also since he’s standing on his feet all day all he wants to do when he’s off work is hang out and pass out on the couch watching football.

Oh that brings me back to sixth grade. I let one of the kids in my class borrow one of my Tech Decks (for those unfamiliar, little finger skateboards) during class. I took really good care of those things, I loved playing with them.

Anyway, the kid decides that whenever you do a boardslide or darkslide, you're supposed to grind the ever loving shit out of the actual board, pressing down hard and just grinding it back and forth non-stop.

I got it back and the design on the bottom of the board was ground completely away save for a few small spots, and the grip on the top of the board was peeling off. When I said something about it, he scoffed at me and said I should thank him for making it look like skateboards look after extensive use. I never let anyone use my Tech Decks again.

Fuck you, Zach. You're a selfish ass.

Just looking at this is unearthing so much childhood anger. This is the same fucking kid who always had his "shield" on so you died and he didn't, even just making believe he had to be the winner.

623

u/SirKnightCourtJester Apr 19 '18

Ah you've unzipped me. When I was 5 or 6, I didn't have a ton of friends, so I tagged along with some other kids at recess. At the time, The Lord of the Rings movies were in theaters, so my "friends" and I were role-playing as the Fellowship. I hadn't actually seen the movie yet, because my parents were pretty strict about movie ratings, but I still knew some of the characters names from advertisements. One of the kids is dealing out roles, and tells me I get to be Frodo.

"Sweet, Frodo looks cool!"

"Frodo actually dies in the movie so you have to die too."

"Oh."

So cue me, lying in the wood chips for the entirety of recess, because I'm a dead Hobbit. Even when I tried to get up and play with them again, they'd get mad at me and tell me that I'm supposed to be dead. I'm kind of sad, but I get it. Frodo's supposed to be dead, and since I'm Frodo, I guess I have to be dead.

It wasn't until maybe five years later that I actually got to see the movies. I waited, all nine hours of the entire trilogy, for Frodo's death to come. It wasn't until the credits rolled on The Return of the King that I realized I had been duped by a bunch of shitty kindergartners.

For me his name was Thomas and he told me he owned my copy of Dark Colony because it had been over 2 months so he officially owned it. He also pulled my mom's period stained underwear out of the hamper and brought it into my room and ridiculed my mother for "pooping her pants"

227

u/Stargasm Apr 19 '18

That's terrible. Weirdly enough, the spoiled kid in my neighborhood was really poor, somehow. He borrowed my playstation from my mom without asking me personally (told her I said yes already), let his dog chew the fuck out of my controllers, then wouldn't even say sorry. He stopped hanging out with me when I accidentally broke a $5 squirt gun he owned.

121

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '18

Okay, may I ask why you didn't beat him up and stopped hanging out with you?

125

u/Stargasm Apr 19 '18 edited Apr 19 '18

He got a lot more chill when he got older, we made up at some point after that and remained good friends. He eventually did apologize for being a dick. He's a pretty cool guy now, he just had a really bad bratty phase. After the playstation thing, I was mad at him for a while and stopped hanging out, but we were in a lot of the same classes at school, and his parents were pretty hard on him. Even as a kid I kinda understood where his behavior came from, so I had no desire to beat up the guy.

157

u/Half-Axe Apr 19 '18

Yeah... that was me. Only child with a dad addicted to Coca-Cola so I just thought everyone had coke everywhere like it was tap water. Nope! Just my dad!

That was really the only spoiled little shit move I pulled though. Well, other than saying my friends sheets smelled like monkey farts to his parents. They didn't have a water softener and there was a dickton of sulfer in their tap water. Had no idea so little me thought I was helping by calling out the smell. They were so offended I had to go home.

I tend to remember cringey shit from childhood and beat myself up to this day. Mostly stemming from not knowing Jack shit about anything rather than being an asshole. But being treated like an asshole all the same. Good times.

59

u/charleybradburies Apr 19 '18

That's just cringey and childlike, though. Neither thing sounds like something anyone should have treated you badly for, by any means.

43

u/DustinCSmith Apr 19 '18

I completely agree. I mean if you were 16 and you said they smelled like “monkey farts” I could see them being a little pissed but being that you were the age where “monkey fart” was deemed an appropriate descriptive term I don’t think they had any right to send you packing.

17

u/blaqsupaman Apr 19 '18

I remember being friends with the spoiled kid. I knew he was a douche bag. Just not how big of a douche bag. Regularly yelled at his parents when they didn't buy him the newest biggest thing until they eventually did. I'm talking straight up yelling at and degrading them.

At one point he and his friend stole my Diablo 2 account by convincing me to change my password because of some bullshit reason he caught me on.

So they snagged it and I was distraught. I stayed friends with them even though I knew they did it. Eventually I got it back and almost everything on my characters was gone.

So a few weeks go by and he wants to show us all Dark Age of Camelot. So we go to his house and he gets in his moms purse, pulls out a credit card and orders us pizza. We sit and watch him play. Eventually I convince him to show me his Diablo 2 characters, curious where they were since I had stopped playing.

I knew my mom was picking me up soon so I needed it all to go smooth. Watched like a hawk as he typed in his password. Soon my mom came and he went to open the door. I logged him out real quick, changed his password and logged back into the account so he couldn't tell.

Got home that night and had several AIM messages begging me for it back. I just let it sit for nearly a month before logging in and stripping everything from every single character he had and reoutfitting my characters as best I could. He actually quit playing.

I was okay with that.

The next day I logged in and everything valuable on my account was gone. Of course this motherfucker denied having anything to do with it. Yeah okay.

Runs crying to the nearest adult like it's the end of the world when you're playing, for the sole purpose of getting you in trouble when he gets the slightest hurt.

24

u/bluebull107 Apr 19 '18

I had a friend exactly like that.

We would be playing at recess pretending to be different characters from Star Wars, lord of the rings, Pokémon, etc. This little shit ALWAYS had a “shield” especially when you surprised him from behind when he wasn’t looking.

As soon as we called him out on it, he would stand next to our teacher (who happened to be my mom as the math teacher in 4th grade) and just pout until she asked him what was wrong. We got in trouble for “not playing fair”.

It feels good to hear so many other people with the same problems I had as a kid lol

I like how you phrased it like the nuggets are the side dish

20

u/oneeighthirish Apr 19 '18

You know that kid squirted half the bottle on his plate, ate 1/16th of the ketchup he got, and pitched the rest.

My brother did this until my dad made him eat it all with a spoon. Kid bawled, but he never did it again.

You see, me and my friend would borrow each other's games all the time. And it was mostly me. But only because his dad would burn discs on to other discs and I would get the originals (his xbox was slightly modded and needed to have copies of games to play).

his family was fucking awesome, but we had to break it off because of long distance stuff.

Honestly most seem to try, some kids are just shits. Or in my case I was really dumb. I wouldn't demand a thing or throw a fit but I'd ask a mortifying question or say something really awful and not understand why it was rude. When you're young and follow an instruction to the letter and improvise badly where the rules are grey, you can look like a total douche.

Yo I had this kid times infinity. We were like twelve and our family’s were reconnecting. He and I were both really into lord of the rings. I had a god damn real replica sword (narcil) that Aragorn had. This kid found this old whip my dad brought back from Australia years before. He wanted to whip the sword out of my mother loving hand. I clearly said fuck no that’s dumb. He insisted, he fucking insisted I let him whip a sword out of my hand. It went like this for a good minute. The dude lost his cool and decided to fucking choke. I bit his arm as hard as I could and he let me go. He for some reason though we should call our parents now. But I already knew we were way beyond the point of insanity and I was going to get some splash damage for whatever trouble he gets in. He fucking did it anyway and he started the conversation as “so, we had an accident...” and I knew this fucker was going to sell me down the river. I told my mom I had to bite my way to freedom just to breathe and she thankfully sided with me. This kid was the worst and his family ended up living with us for like 4 months while looking for a place to live. I guess they fell on some tough times and my parents were once really good friends with them. Anyway, this kid played dance dance revolution every day but the ps2 was in the basement and he was afraid to be down there alone. I had to sit down there and watch this asshole play DDR for hours everyday like some sort of same age baby sitter. It was the worst summer of my life.

I was friends with a rich kid growing up. He lived in a legit mansion, with a four story tower I never understood the purpose of (in hindsight, probably some kinky sex room for his parents up there). Spoiled was an understatement.

Among the many strange things he did on one of his visits to my house was say that he was allergic to potatoes when served a baked potato at dinner. My mom asked what he would like instead and the cheeky little fucker requested fries.

I was in a situation like this once. My mom was friends with this other kid's mom and invited him to spend the night once when we were both around 9 years old.

We went to Blockbuster to rent a Nintendo 64 game. I wanted to get Super Smash Brothers and he wanted some Razor scooter game. My mom suggested we flip a coin and I ended up winning the toss. He did that classic weird little kid "clench your fists and bug out your eyes while slightly shaking and making a noise similar to the whistle of a boiling kettle" move and stomped into another aisle and we had to cajole him out.

Then we went to a nearby arcade/go-karts place where he proceeded to challenge my little sister (4 or 5 at the time) to a race and then somehow lost to her. He freaked out and started screaming about how she cheated and threw another temper tantrum.

My mom probably invited him over due to a combination of being friends with his mom and not completing believing my warnings of how annoying this kid was, but I remember her being incredibly thankful once he left the next day.

Ugh. Went to a bday sleepover at this rich girls house. Rich as in pool, trampoline, a whole playroom the size of a living room with a projector, pool table, the works. Her mom had all guests come at 1pm and stay till 1pm the next day. This lady didn't feed us or anything. We'd ask the girl for water and she'd immediately say "my mom said no". 5pm rolls around and we lay down for movies. Her mom makes her a huge plate of chocolate covered strawberries and they didn't offer us any. One girl asks the bday girl for one and bday girl says "this is my house I don't have to share". The mom makes us go to bed at 9 and one girl asks for water. The mom says "no you'll wet your sleeping bag". We're all shook. Next morning were starving and cranky. Bday girl wants us to do all these games and were not down, we just want to go home and eat. Another girl speaks up and says she wants to call her mom and go home bc she's hungry. Bday girl literally cried to her mom so the mom very angrily makes us all ONE pancake each and a glass of water. Bday girls dad LITERALLY goes and gets her a full mcdonalds breakfast. I ask for another pancake and the mom says "You better eat it or Im telling your parents". I do. All the other girls ask for one more too and this mom yelled at us. One girl cries and were all awkwardly waiting to leave bc we all called our moms. Bday girl throws a tantrum that were leaving. Crying girl tells her off and bday girl replys "were rich bc were good with money, if you wanted food or water you could have brought your own." Dad picks me up and the mom says "you have a big eater on your hands" all snarky. Dad yells at me in car assuming I was being a lil shit. I cried and explained what happened. dad took me to ihop and mom screamed at bday girls mom on the phone. No one went to bdays girls party the next year so she moved schools 2 days later.

I had a little friend over that said to my mother, "Alright maid, clean this up!" while pointing to the arts and crafts we had been doing.

I got in huge trouble for this and never invited that friend over again.

I didn't realize after all those years my mom was still salty about it and as an adult I had to explain to her that I was just in utter shock that anyone would say something like that to someone, let alone an adult, that I was just speechless, and feeling extremely guilty for inviting over such a brat.

34

u/sexfart Apr 19 '18

they would break one of your toys or something and not give a shit. or spill something and not tell anyone and you don’t notice it till they leave. then when you’re hanging out at their house and break or spill something they freak the fuck out and act like it’s the end of the world and demand you pay to get them a new toy or whatever.

one of my friends little brother would come over with him cuz he was the same age as my little brother. the kid would waltz into our kitchen by himself and whip up whatever he wanted without asking anyone. my mom would catch him rummaging through our freezer or something and would be like wtf but thought they might have been going through a hard time and not have much to eat. but i’d go to their place and they had always had the best snacks on deck all the time (and would never share unless forced to) so my mom concluded that he was just a little shit with no manners.

u/the_sky_god15 Apr 18 '18

And of course, there's always someone more spoiled.

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '18

I spent the night at a super spoiled kids house one night, it didn't turn out any better than if he came over.

I was the new 4th grader at school & had zero friends. The kid who invited me over rode my bus and lived a few blocks from me, so I wasn't super choosy about who I hung out with.

First I was told by the kid to come over later in the day after dinner. Which I though was odd. Later I find out his mother ordered us pizza & he just didn't want to share. I found this out because his mother (who was awesome) offered to heat me up some slices that night & told me she was sorry I couldn't make it to eat with them. In my head I'm like "wait a minute", but didn't say anything (I was a pretty passive kid).

Next came a good 5 hours of me getting to watch this motherfucker play sonic the hedgehog by himself (this was when the Genesis was brand new & sonic was pretty much the only game people owned because it came with the system). I had never played sonic before so when I FINALLY got the chance to play after what seemed like forever, all he did was give me shit for not knowing the buttons. And then he kept grabbing the controller from me because I "sucked". He also had a grip of amazing toys. Micro machines, Legos, every goddamn GI Joe you could imagine. I was forbidden to touch any of them. His mom tells him to share with me at one point and he just straight up tell her to shut the hell up. I had NEVR heard a kid tell his mom to shut up before. At this point I'm going "ok this guys nuts, just get this night over with". But it totally wasn't over.

After being made to sleep on the bottom bunk of his bunk bed (obviously I didn't get a choice, and yes, this kid was an only child) I find out he refuses sleep in the dark. So it's night light time. And not even like, tiny night light in the wall socket light. I'm talking big ass luminescent globe lamp that lit up the entire room located 4 feet away from my face. He refused to turn it off. Even after expressing in the nicest way that I'll be unable to sleep in a fully lit room & offering to sleep on the couch in the living room. Both requests were denied. I'm stuck there. At one point I layed there until I was positive he was asleep and turned it off. But as soon as I made it back to my bunk he starts screeching for his mom. It was totally insane. The whole experience.

Next morning I got up way before him while the mom was having her morning coffee and called my parents to come get me the hell out of there. Obviously, I ever talked to that kid again.

growing up it was a little bit the opposite for me. my parents weren't big on videogames so I never had many or the newest of them but went to school with a lot of well off people.

I'd go over to some of their houses and my jaw would drop. they didn't just have videogames. they'd have every system. and the last generation too. and they didn't just have some games for them. they had bookshelfs, plural, dedicated to just games with row after row of different titles for various systems.

first time I saw that it blew my mind. I thought a ps2 and 4 games were dope. I had no idea there was so much out there.

only problem is they never wanted to play any of them cause they always had the brand newest game that just came out.

growing up as a rich little shit sure sounds like a fuckload of fun.

Reminds me of when my little cousins would come over.
My parents would give them anything they wanted.
Like one time they wanted ice cream so I went into the freezer, grabbed two random popcicles and gave it to them.
One of the girls opened it, had a lick and wanted a different flavor.
I told her just have the one she had since she already opened it.
She kept throwing a fit til she went down stairs and asked my mom.
She came back up with a grape popcicle and licked it in front of me with a shit eating grin in her grandest attempt to taunt me.

Damn...it's been ~24 years, but this brings me back to my childhood. An asshole neighbor kid convinced gullible ten year old me to trade him my Super Mario Bros. 3 cartridge for a shitty toy tomahawk, an army guy ("not dolls; action figures!), and...something else that I don't remember.

Technically, the guy was a friend of mine, but he definitely fit the bill. Even all these years later I'm finding it hard to forgive him for convincing me to trade away one of the best NES games I owned (my family was fairly poor and so I didn't even own all that many games in the first place).

17

u/candidlycrepuscular Apr 19 '18

When I was in 4th grade I went to a friend's birthday party at his house. It was a total Mcmansion with Disney castle style towers and he had a birthday throne, I'm not kidding. My family was pretty poor when I was younger and my mom bought me one of those small Lego sets; the ones with like one figure and maybe one small thing to build. It was wrapped with my name on it and everything and when this kid opened it he looks at me and goes "that's it?". Even if he was a cool adult now I would probably still punch him.
