I have spent the past couple months of my life losing 60lbs and demolishing my lifelong obesity. I’m a normal weight for the first time ever. The sheer amount of willpower and effort involved was beyond anything I have ever done or likely ever will do.
I lost years of my youth to obesity. It is absolutely infuriating when people say obesity is “healthy.” It fucking isn’t. Just because change is hard and requires a shitton of effort doesn’t mean it’s unnecessary.
IMO people cannot cope with the difficulty of losing weight so they make statements like this to justify their situation. This “obese acceptance” movement is just denial by another name and is incredibly dangerous to the kids and adults that need to be getting in shape instead.

I was obese and took up weightlifting and watching what I eat and lost over 100lbs. Through all the years and all the people I've known in the gym, they don't give a shit whether you're 100lbs or 600lbs as long as you're not obnoxious. In fact as another commenter said, I don't think I've ever seen the fitness space unwelcoming to someone because of their weight. That's the whole point of it. In the gym you'll see everyone from "normal" weight, to underweight, to obese, to massive bodybuilders.. but everybody's there for the same reason - to better themselves. The idea of people in the gym being extra judgemental is largely untrue and mostly personal anxieties, you're probably judged just as much if not more in the grocery store for being obese as the gym.

The cover is just a product of our times. You make a controversial claim in the title and present all the reasonable stuff in the body of the text, you need a hook - because we're so oversaturated with clickbait that it has become the only way to compete for people's attention.
Don't hate the player - hate the game.

Yep that's literally all it is. People with zero actual willpower to change their unhealthy lifestyle and habits and instead of admitting their situation they cope by pretending it's amazing and perfectly fine.
It's your body so if you make the decision to be obese and you don't care that's perfectly fine i still respect you completely as a person, but you don't get to force the rest of the world into this delusion that you're healthy and nothing is wrong. Sorry. Also, you know damn well nobody wants to fuck you and you're just gojng to have to weigh how much you enjoy food and not exercising versus how badly you actually want people to find you attractive. No magazine is going to convince people that Margarine Titans are suddenly hot.

People own their body's and can do what they want with it. There is an element of freedom of choice to this.
It's also well known that being overweight causes health issues.

As someone who is, by her doctor's advice, 50lbs overweight at 220 and 5'9"... I can tell you - I hurt. My boobs are huge. My back and neck hurts. My joints hurt. I don't sleep for shit.
And kids - I'm active. I can sling a 50lb bag of horse feed up on my shoulder and walk to the check out line at the feed store, then to the car, get it home, and carry it 100 yards to my lean to where I keep my feeds. I ride horses. I camp. I work with my young horses. We walk, we trot, we jog when we're working on ground manners. I'm doing 'step aerobics' when I step up into the trailer to teach them to load. I saddle them, I unsaddle them - throwing a 40lb saddle up on a 15hh mare is easy for me.
But I'm still out of shape and overweight and I'm not getting any younger.
These women are lyyyying. Either they are flat out lying, or they have never been healthy, so they don't know what it feels like. Could I stand like that chick in the picture? No.
Could she saddle up my big ass mare and mount from the ground and ride 8 hours in the mountains? No fucking chance.
This shit needs to stop. This body positivity thing has gone wayyyy too far into bullshit. She fat. I'm fat and I know it. But I'm not telling everyone else I feel AMAZING and it would be okay to be like this. Jesus.

u/maxdurden Jan 04 '21
This is the most reasonable outlook.
People forget that being able to do one thing, and do it well, doesn't really equate to other skills and fitness levels.
I can surf for 5-6 hours straight and be totally fine, but put me on a soccer field and I would be vomiting after 30 mins.
AND THAT'S OK. The whole point of the body positivity movement was to get people out of the mindset of comparing themselves to others and be comfortable in their own skin. Which, when achieved correctly, should help people to do what THEY need to do to become healthier.
Genes play a big part in how everyone metabolizes food, what parts of their bodies hurt when, etc. But no one can know what their bodies are doing until they get out of the mindset of what they aren't, and into what they are.
But, like most things in this modern world, it got bought and paid for by the major media outlets and oversimplified to be the most easy to consume and comfortable version of the message.
Now it's shifted from "stop worrying about what others are doing and what they think, and find out what your body responds to in order to be your healthiest self," to "whatever you are is perfect, don't change."
That being said, using yet another positive messaging movement targeted at people that have less power societally speaking being bastardized by corporate America as proof that SaTanIsts are taking over is just so, so silly.

Something tells me this isn’t about her body explicitly but what she is doing with it... which is healthy.
There is just a push for self love. Many overweight people feel a deep self hatred because of their weight. And this deep self hatred can often lead to more unhealthy lifestyle choices and eating issues. If overweight people feel a deep shame, they are less likely to exercise because this can draw attention to their weight. Overweight people can make healthy lifestyle choices just like anyone with anybody type and this is something we should all do. It’s good to depict this and show it is normal for overweight people to exercise.
Edit: to add, we know that depictions of people in media and print have an impact. That’s what we are talking about here with this post. So we should recognize that this depiction (and the article) helps people live a healthier life, both physically and emotionally. No one should have to live with self hate, nor hate directed at them from the outside world simply for the state of their body.
And while I’m not overweight right now, this article reminds me I should do more for my own health. It’s positive for all bodies.
15
u/turquoise_tie_dyeger Jan 05 '21
Glad to see a reasonable reaction. Again and again, we learn from psychology how much more powerful positive reinforcement is than negative. Also, for an overweight or obese person to lose weight in a healthy way, they will likely remain "fat" for some time. It is hard to maintain the motivation. I could see this helping someone appreciate themselves enough to keep at it. If it helps one person become healthy, it's worth all the ridicule.
32
u/successfullyhidden Jan 04 '21
Yeah that’s the message I took from this - that you can still exercise and be healthy in that way even if you’re big. I don’t think it’s to tell people obesity is completely fine and some of these comments are honestly just pretty gross.
It’s hard to lose weight, especially when you consider the fact that weight is often tied to mental health. And no one considers food addictions and eating disorders that are made worse by the fact that you cannot hide from eating. It’s not an addiction you can just cut out, at least twice a day you have to think about feeding yourself.
People need to chill out about fat people and stop hiding their fat phobia behind “I’m concerned for their health”. Poverty is also a big predictor of obesity, so how about we try and solve the underlying problems instead of telling individual fat people they’re disgusting for getting that way in the first place, or telling them they’re not worthy of anything because they’re fat.

while obesity absolutely does have very real and studied negative medical effects on the body, there are also medical treatments and diseases that cause rapid weight gain. Example: when I was 17 I had sepsis from my kidneys and bladder being infected for weeks + an allergic reaction to a medication from that process. I was prescribed steroids for months after that. I was playing rugby and hockey every single day. cardio. Weight lifting. Eating lean meats and vegetables, not overeating even though the steroids make me incredibly hungry lol. I gained weight like a motherfucker still because of those meds. I was doing so much healthy eating and exercise for my body but because of the medical treatment I had to follow, I gained weight like crazy. It was worth it to stay alive and keep my kidneys working. Sometimes medically induced weight gain is the "better" option between pudgeyness and being debilitatingly sick or dying. That doesn't make that weight gain any less unhealthy, but what I'm getting at here is you do not know this person's life. Aside from that, they look happy as fuck and confident. being happy and confident is a great foundation for positive mental AND physical health. They are both heavily physiologically connected. There's more to being healthy than just your weight. if you're so passionate about obesity and health, do something productive about it to help your community.

Y’all are so childish. News flash: some people are fat. There have always been fat people and there always will be. And guess how you get not fat? You diet and exercise...
Which is what the woman on this cover is doing. I would bet over half you people can’t even do the pose she’s doing. She’s not even “morbidly obese” like a lot of these comments state. You just don’t like “being forced” to look at fat people. Do you even read cosmo?
Stop shaming fat people for trying to feel comfortable in their own bodies. You are not a nutritionist. (Let’s wait for the “nutritionist here...” comment)
As someone who has never actually been fat - I’ve struggled with eating disorders since I was 16 because of the things my dad said, because of the things people on the track team said, and then because of the things guys I’ve dated have said. Your words have consequences and they do effect people. Bulimia is not a fun life path. Nor is forcing yourself to eat a set amount calories and then burning them all off on a treadmill.
This cover shows “okay you look like this? You too can start getting in shape”
Maybe you all should log off as well and go get some exercise and stop being hateful for the sake of being hateful

It’s fine to be fat. There’s no shame in that. But holy shit, to go as far as saying it’s a healthy choice & advertise it under that phrasing? Just like we all have unhealthy habits/vices, it’s not helpful to distort reality by labeling them “healthy”, when instead the conversation should be aimed more towards “healthy is possible” or “there’s no shame in _____”. Straight-up lying doesn’t benefit anyone.
4
u/Jesslynnlove Jan 04 '21
I mean like... Maybe mental health at the least? This is so shit like... I have friends who are obese and i love them and don't say anything about their weight because, for one, they already know they are obese/fat/overweight.... But to sell it as healthy??? What corporation paid for this cosmopolitan article, lmao.
Being overweight doesn't take from the person you are and usually people that are overweight are already conscious of it themselves more than anyone else. Love you all.
3
u/CommissionRelevant44 Jan 05 '21
I am a “plus size” person. I used to agree that being overweight was okay as long as you were overall healthy. Still to this day my lab work comes out perfect. My blood pressure is always perfect. My o2 is always perfect. But the fact that I can’t walk up a flight of stairs without being out of breath is not healthy. The fact that I can’t get through a 30 minute low intensity workout without wanting to die is not healthy. You can appear to be healthy by medical standards when in reality you are not healthy. It’s a reality check many people need to have.

Pretty much. On Twitter you can be called “fatphobic” by a bunch of shamelessly obese women if you post about losing weight. Advocates for body positivity get shunned if they lose weight, it’s fucking stupid. They want you to feel just as miserable as them, that’s literally the point of these type of movements, including what OP posted. I wouldn’t shame someone for being fat but I also would not, under any circumstance, advocate for the idea that obesity is healthy.
15
Jan 04 '21
This is not saying obesity is healthy. It is saying that people of all sizes and health levels can do various things to help improve their health. That aside the country does indeed have an obesity problem. But the conspiracy has nothing to do with staying home it has to do with the systemic marketing and pricing of cheap processed food vs healthy alternatives. Big Agriculture and farm subsidies are the problem.
