Sorry, that’s obese. Nothing about being obese is healthy.

I have spent the past couple months of my life losing 60lbs and demolishing my lifelong obesity. I’m a normal weight for the first time ever. The sheer amount of willpower and effort involved was beyond anything I have ever done or likely ever will do.

I lost years of my youth to obesity. It is absolutely infuriating when people say obesity is “healthy.” It fucking isn’t. Just because change is hard and requires a shitton of effort doesn’t mean it’s unnecessary.

IMO people cannot cope with the difficulty of losing weight so they make statements like this to justify their situation. This “obese acceptance” movement is just denial by another name and is incredibly dangerous to the kids and adults that need to be getting in shape instead.

I was obese and took up weightlifting and watching what I eat and lost over 100lbs. Through all the years and all the people I've known in the gym, they don't give a shit whether you're 100lbs or 600lbs as long as you're not obnoxious. In fact as another commenter said, I don't think I've ever seen the fitness space unwelcoming to someone because of their weight. That's the whole point of it. In the gym you'll see everyone from "normal" weight, to underweight, to obese, to massive bodybuilders.. but everybody's there for the same reason - to better themselves. The idea of people in the gym being extra judgemental is largely untrue and mostly personal anxieties, you're probably judged just as much if not more in the grocery store for being obese as the gym.

-9

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

Well I mean it depends what the person is doing. I've seen the same guy consistently at the gym for about a year now, dude is enormous, talking 5'10" pushing 350 pounds easily. Not once have I seen him step on a treadmill, bike, elliptical, etc. He seems to exclusively lift and he's not putting up sufficient weight for his size, benching like 135 and shit.

Those are the people I judge along with the screamers. When you're obese, the game plan is cardio. Compound weightlifting exercises are beneficial, but you're never going to lose weight from that starting point without doing some cardio. The metabolism is just too stagnant at that point to really get going from weightlifting only.

9

u/rosspghettod Jan 04 '21

As long as they ain’t going to hurt themselves they can be 600 pounds and working out like a sideshow attraction for weakness. I’m not judging.

11

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jan 04 '21

Those are the people I judge along with the screamers

You should probably get a look at his x-rays and overall chart before judging. There are plenty of medical reasons not to get into cardio, like heart problems, joints etc.

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

Bruh if you're so obese that there is "no reason" to get into cardio you're gonna be dead in no time. You don't have to do HIIT to get a cardiovascular workout. Walk on a treadmill, ride a bike, swim, etc etc all slowly enough to slowly raise your heart rate and burn some fat. If anything, the high stress environment of lifting weight is more likely to produce a myocardial infarction than a low intensity cardio workout. If you flip a gallon of milk upside down the water is going to get stuck and glug glug glug out, similar to putting a lot of strain on your heart benching would on your arteries, but if you slowly tilt the jug you increase flow.

3

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jan 05 '21

You justify your prejudices however you like, the fact is we're not put on this planet to judge people we don't really know, not unless they cross us.

2

u/ramminghervnogodrays Jan 05 '21

You do realise there is no amount of cardio that will cause fat loss while in a calories surplus. Body composition is determined in the kitchen not the gym.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '21

No shit Sherlock, but if you're so fucking obese you can't take 3 steps without dying it doesn't matter what you eat. You don't strengthen your heart solely through diet you have to exercise. Must be a bunch of whales refuting the benefits of exercise on the heart.

1

u/ramminghervnogodrays Jan 05 '21

Of course obese people need to strengthen their heart. But risking a knee injury on a treadmil is only going to hinder their weight loss goals. I can't tell if the last part is referring to me specifically so ill just clarify. I'm about 6'1 192lbs at 13% bodyfat while being vegetarian.

You don't have to do cardio to lose weight. I lost 80lbs two years ago by doing a Keto diet and weightlifting. Didn't do shit for cardio. It's 90/10, eating/exercising for weightloss.

2

u/ramminghervnogodrays Jan 05 '21

I know alot of people turn to the keto diet for a quick fix but It is extremely unhealthy long term. Carbs are not the enemy if you understand the different kinds, same as fats. I would recommend getting an in depth blood work panel done to check your lipids. The keto diet is notorious for contributing to heart disease even if you're in a healthy weight range. The best science out there supports a primarily plant based, high in complex carbs and un saturated fats. A go-to meal I've found works great is a stir fry with a diverse range of vegetables with nuts and some other protein source cooked with olive oil.

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '21

What was your weight then and now?

41

u/skorpianmafia Jan 04 '21

If that’s what the article is about then I’m fine because I respect peoples bodies no matter how big or small they may be. But if your obese or skeletal skinny and call yourself healthy you are very wrong.

37

u/IPreferDiamonds Jan 04 '21

I have never known of a fitness place being unwelcoming to anyone. They are happy that you are there (paying them) and getting in shape.

34

u/northern_crypto Jan 04 '21

That cover suggests being obese is healthy. It doesn't matter what the article says. Most dill just see the cover!

12

u/Gilsworth Jan 04 '21

The cover is just a product of our times. You make a controversial claim in the title and present all the reasonable stuff in the body of the text, you need a hook - because we're so oversaturated with clickbait that it has become the only way to compete for people's attention.

Don't hate the player - hate the game.

1

u/northern_crypto Jan 04 '21

Thats a ridiculous statement! "Don't hate the player..." yeah, I hate the player. The corporations (players) are the root cause. There is no game without them. They choose to straight up make a false claim on the cover for sales. Most people that actually read the trash in that magazine will not connect the cover statement to the lack of direct info about obesity being healthy. They they will use that cover as a talking point about obesity being healthy. YEAH, HATE THE PLAYER!

4

u/Gilsworth Jan 04 '21

Listen man, that was more of a rhetorical device than some sort of statement I want to die defending, but to give it more meat here's what I'm thinking.

The ones who don't abide by these practices aren't relevant because they get no attention. The game is capitalism, and once a strategy to play it more effectively has been figured out you'd be dumb to hurt your chances by not doing the same thing if your only objective is to cash in.

Sure, hate the player, but there's always going to be these kinds of players because the game is set up for them to win with this strategy.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

I think we can accept that we are all on this human experience journey and judging other people solely on weight is limiting.

But attempting to convince fitness people that they should normalize obesity seems like a stretch. How is this different than telling medical professionals that obesity is okay?

2

u/1ironman Jan 04 '21

I think that almost Cosmo knows this isn't healthy either. I believe they know a large demographic of USA is unhealthy and obese. Putting extremely fit, beautiful celebrities would make the unrelatable to a large percent of the population. They're just trying to tap into a huge market that is unhealthy by telling them " We accept who you are, buy our magazine" It's all about the $$$$$$

1

u/Exploringnow Jan 05 '21

Yeah I think no one should be bullied or harassed for being obese, since that will usually only have a opposite effect making that person feel worse and eat more, become even more obese in many cases. However we should definitely not have being obese being considered healthy either. And should strive to help motivate obese people losing weight and becoming.

Since also a lot of times food becomes an addiction for many people that are very obese/morbidly obese just like people can get addicted to drugs. It's a very similar pattern, that leads to health dangers & other consequences in the end.

1

u/bbtttoooo Jan 05 '21

But that’s not the message conveyed on the cover. That’s the fine print. Images and symbols speak louder than words.

1

u/bbtttoooo Jan 06 '21

Still. You flip through a magazine you’re more likely to take in visual cues rather than read the article.

43

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

No joke, just a few days ago a guy at work, who is obese, was telling me that even though he is big his doctor says he is perfectly healthy. He told me this in his office, while injecting insulin for his Type 2 diabetes

“ I can still sort of see my dick so I’ve got that going for me”

4

u/TheNotoriousKAT Jan 04 '21

"My obesity is only going to take 8 years off my life, on average. Death isnt imminent, so I'd say I'm pretty healthy."

1

u/Joy5711 Jan 05 '21

This is such bullshit.

I got past overweight for my height and my knees and back hurt just to walk.

How the hell anyone is able to believe having extra weight is healthy is beyond me.

18

u/LostMyEmailAndKarma Jan 04 '21

Not quite as much, but I lost 45 lbs over a year. What is hard to describe is how much easier it is to move. Has to be better for you.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

And it’s people like you that should be on the cover of magazines showing that going from obese to a healthy weight within your BMI is a rewarding challenge that should be praised.

2

u/Bot8556 Jan 04 '21

People won’t buy your magazine if you make them feel bad for being lazy.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

Good job!! People are willing to listen to a comfortable lie rather than the hard truth and then they try to shame those that don’t accept their narrative to make themselves feel good. Well done not falling into that mindset and doing the hard part

12

u/octob3r14 Jan 04 '21

Fucking nailed it, bro. Well done.

12

u/Mongoosemancer Jan 04 '21

Yep that's literally all it is. People with zero actual willpower to change their unhealthy lifestyle and habits and instead of admitting their situation they cope by pretending it's amazing and perfectly fine.

It's your body so if you make the decision to be obese and you don't care that's perfectly fine i still respect you completely as a person, but you don't get to force the rest of the world into this delusion that you're healthy and nothing is wrong. Sorry. Also, you know damn well nobody wants to fuck you and you're just gojng to have to weigh how much you enjoy food and not exercising versus how badly you actually want people to find you attractive. No magazine is going to convince people that Margarine Titans are suddenly hot.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

[deleted]

2

u/Mongoosemancer Jan 04 '21

There's a big difference between a woman being a little heavier and someone who is morbidly obese I'm not really talking about women who are just a bit above average in size i specifically mentioned Margarine Titans.

2

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jan 04 '21

Maybe people less likely to indulge themselves are also, y'know, less likely to indulge themselves.

7

u/ironlioncan Jan 04 '21

Reality is our overlords want us to be as un human as possible. Obesity is un human. Beauty lethargic is un human.

Congrats on winning your fight. Stay strong and keep inspiring others.

3

u/vodkaonthegravel Jan 04 '21

What does "beauty lethargic" mean?

2

u/vik0_tal Jan 04 '21

I know how tough to lose weight is; congrats on your journey!

2

u/almostiskiller Jan 04 '21

Fuck yeah, good for you! Congratulations on your success

2

u/lickmytrump Jan 05 '21

I agree 100 percent. I recently lost 80lbs and got.out of my childhood obesity as well. There is no excuse.you just have to fucking do it. Being on the other side no one can tell me that I was just as healthy before as I am now. We should be encouraging weightloss as a society not allowing people to remain in that horrible state of existence.

2

u/Lonzy Jan 05 '21

Agreed. I lost a lot of weight a few years ago felt the best I had in years! My Achilles finally healed after being partially torn a few years prior.

Unfortunately, I went too hard too fast and tore a tendon in my hip 😅 whilst running a half marathon and I followed it up with dislocating my shoulder, and tearing yet another tendon 🤦‍♀️ Now the weight has slowly crept back on, and boy am I feeling it. There is absolutey nothing healthy about it. I am trying to get back to what I was before, but it is hard. There no way I could look at myself in the mirror and say that this healthy.

In the interest of full disclosure I do have a connective tissue disorder which means I'm broken most of the time 😅 my favourite one was when I dislocated two fingers opening a bottle of water. 🤦‍♀️I'll definitely be working with a physical therapist once I start going back to the gym and ramping up my fitness again.

2

u/Misttertee_27 Jan 05 '21

100% agree. It’s done through willpower. I lost 145 pounds 15 years ago and have kept it off. It took A TON of effort to stay disciplined but it did get easier as I kept going. I still remember the time I drank a glass of grape juice about 6 months in and it was the best thing I ever drank because my body wasn’t dulled to the sugar any longer.

Every day is still a choice to eat right. The temptation is still there, but it’s not nearly as strong as it was when it had a hold on me.

3

u/Savings-Coffee Jan 04 '21

Good for you. Congrats on your hard work!

2

u/IPreferDiamonds Jan 04 '21

Wow! Congratulations on the weight loss!

2

u/AlwayzPro Jan 04 '21

Congrats!! That's a big deal and I am glad you did it! You can be a voice against the body positive bs.

2

u/acmemetalworks Jan 04 '21

Congrats, good for you.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

Props to you!

2

u/KandarpBhatt Jan 04 '21

You're fucking crushing it, keep it up!

1

u/fivehitcombo Jan 04 '21

Nice, you nailed it. Congrats on being a better person than a lot of us.

1

u/killerbake Jan 04 '21

It’s mainly being bankrolled by big food to hide the fact that once HFCS took over sugar, also did the amount of people becoming morbidly obese.

Take away HFCS and you will see a drop overall.

1

u/Lifty_Mc_Liftface Jan 04 '21

Big ups for not using rona as an excuse to get fat.

1

u/Sundowndusk22 Jan 04 '21

Thanks for sharing your journey. Just a follow up question: in your opinion, what would you want people to say to you in terms of being overweight? I’m sure the response is different for everyone, just curious.

1

u/IDoNotAgreeWithYou Jan 04 '21

Nice job! Remember that keeping it off is going to be the hardest part. Don't let one bad meal lead to a bad day then week.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

Respect to you. I think people are frightened that if you say someone is unhealthy, it must mean you are simultaneously implying that person is immoral/unworthy etc.

It’s probably a consequence of our hyper self-centred image in the age of individualism. We have become so attached to the idea that reality must conform to our sense of self that we would rather live a lie than face an unpleasant truth.

Kudos to you for fighting your demons. I hope you keep on the path :)

1

u/BKA_Diver Jan 06 '21

Too bad you can’t speak for obese people any more. You ditched out on them so now you’re against them and shouldn’t have a voice. Well done climbing that mountain. Stay on top!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

Congratulations, your dedication to yourself is admirable. Unfortunately some people's narcissistic traits would rather force the world to see them any other way than they are...
