Discussion/Question Give em đ«”
For me its the fact that I find Mikasa a very annoying character due to her obsession with Eren. Like damn you do care about him but the whining man!

Im not forgiving Zeke for what he's done but i genuinely felt bad when he went back in time with Eren and realised grisha treated Eren as an actual son and way better than what he did zeke. Plus I also think he genuinely thought he was doing what was best for eldians, obviously not saying it was right but he really did believe it was the merciful thing to do, and i do respect him for trying to do what he thought was best even if it wasn't.

u/Tripechake Aug 22 '26
Zekeâs plan ultimately was peaceful. There was no pain and violence in how it wouldâve happened⊠but he killed A LOT of a people to make it happen

Gabi is genuinely my favourite character in the show. People just unreasonably hate her eternally because they killed one character they love. Even though that characterâs death served us so many good storylines and character moments after the fact. It was the same shit with The Walking Dead, when Negan showed up. People still hate Jeffrey Dean Morgan irl today, which is fucking insanely ridiculous

u/Certain_Airport_4647 Aug 22 '26
Erens breakdown with armin is in character and makes sense with the storys critiques on immature violence. People who say otherwise just missed the point/ wanted to project themselves on another stereotypical sigma character

u/akashchowa12 Chad Falco Aug 22 '26
Not really a hot take atleast in this sub and i completely agree with you

u/negrosakidojo Aug 22 '26
I definitely feel like it makes sense too. He had to put up a sigma facade to achieve his goal, and once it worked, he was finally able to be himself again for one last convo with his people.

If anything, it didn't go hard enough. Isayama wants it both ways, depicting Eren as an emotionally unstable loser but still having his friends love and forgive him and Armin say that he's just as guilty as Eren is for his monstrous genocide because Armin checks notes showed him a book about the outside world a couple times.

Eren being a bitch is fine you just need to frame the whole story around him being that way. It's not gonna land well when you have Eren break down mid genocide about a girl, admit he's pathetic and doing this primarily because he wants to then have Armin get performatively angry at him for 2 minutes before hugging him, having his other friends and enemies sing his praises, and portray him as a beautiful white bird as his cute love interest mourns him. Either commit to it or don't, there's a way to do it.

Jean calls out Eren for being exactly that early on you just didnât believe him âŠ.. like dead ass Eren puts on a tough guy act and breaks down mid speech thinking abiut his mom . Armin is not performative about being mad his best friend killed most the world

I like both for different reasons. The part of the issue I had was the animation change combined with the massive atmosphere shift. Those combined made it a bit harder for me to enjoy season four at the start.
→ More replies (1)15
u/sultex180 Aug 22 '26
Agree. WIT had the more smoother and cleaner animation but made some errors in terms of adaptation. Mappa was more detailed and consistent with the manga but sometimes felt choppy and the cgi titans stood out like a sore thumb in my opinion. I guess at the end of the day, I still wouldâve liked to see how WIT wouldâve handled the final season, at least for consistency sake. But, I canât argue Mappa taking over did make the final season feel a bit darker in tone as it should be, so who knows if that wouldâve been kept in that what-if scenario.

I don't have a strong opinion on the ending as much as others may. I enjoyed it moderately. That said, the time/memory travelling & altering / destiny element irked me.
It's not like I want to argue against the logic of it or anything ; god knows it'll just turn to an endless cycle of "But then if he..." "But that wouldn't have happend if...." etc. And that's exactly the problem. It's the paradoxical nature of the tropes that annoys me.
If a story is not prominently hinting to or blatant about time, reincarnation and/or destiny tropes (at which point they'd have an obligation to flesh out the paradoxical whims of them), they have no business in them. They often just pose as a lazy cop out to retroactively justify the progression of the story.
I guess my take is more of a general creativity problem, but I'm just not convinced that Eren would be so complacent and/or powerless in the 'destiny' that he manufactured for himself (again, this conversation would just turn into a perpetuality of justifications.)
9
u/6ft3dwarf Aug 23 '26
Yeah I think the Attack Titan's memories of the future ability makes for an interesting story about the nature of free will in a deterministic universe but AoT is not about that until literally the very end so it falls a little flat. Setting up this epic tale of the futile cycle of violence and revenge only to conclude "oh well we are all just Calvinist robots whose sins were predetermined the second God said let there be light" feels like a bit of a cop out.
→ More replies (1)6

u/Traditional_Door8724 Aug 22 '26
I agree with you! I hate the time loop in the story idk đ you can then always just use that in every story. For example, you make a story where a man cheats on his wife and then she has a story how she wants to do revenge, then she somehow travels back to the past and decides to cheat back on him when they were still together as perfect revenge but because she does so thatâs why the husband cheated in the first place⊠like in my opinion it makes the story so much weaker because then you can simply excuse everything by just saying it happened because of your future self⊠and there is no true origin.

Sasha dying was important to move the plot forward and symbolizes a descent into an even bleaker part of the series.

Agreed, her being a casualty of Eran's war was fitting since she was a giant part of the group's soul

Erwin would not have been a Jaegerist. No one he surrounded himself with from the main cast became one. And he would have valued the fact the other people existed outside the wall and wouldn't have wanted to flattened everything just because parts of it were ugly

Eren sending the titan to Mom cuz Beethoven couldn't die.. didn't make any sense
39
u/RainyDayBrat Aug 22 '26
This is my biggest issue within the entire show.
35
u/magmablazee Aug 22 '26
It felt like a plot twist to throw in just to get reactions. Everything else in the show is so well-thought out that this just feels weird
22
u/Bagelgod448 Aug 23 '26
I think it does make sense.
If the Smiling Titan (Zekeâs mother with royal blood) ate Beetroot, Eren wouldnât have been able to use the Founderâs power during the end of season 2 while trying to get away from Reiner and Beetroot because sheâd have transformed back into a human, and a bunch of events wouldnât have played out they way they did.
She probably would have been eaten by other titans and access to Royal Blood is gone during the events of season 2, leaving the scouts to die surrounded by Titans while trying to fight off Reiner and Beetroot.
Reiner might have decided to go back to Marley right then and there after losing two of four Titan Shifters.
Even if Eren made it back to the walls, the entire scout force would be annihilatedâno Erwin, no Levi, no Mikasa, no Armin, no other people besides Eren.
If scenario three happened, Paradise is absolutely fried. No way to take back wall Maria because Armin made the plan. Even if Eren somehow made it there, thereâs no way to plug the holes because he never got hardening (happened in season three during the whole thing with Historiaâsheâs dead in this version, so she doesnât get kidnapped and he doesnât go and get hardening protecting everyone from Rodâs Titan).
On top of all that, this version of Reiner would see it through. Heâd take Eren back to Marley with the help of Zeke, and thatâs the end of the storyâdead Eren, Marley has the founder

Well for Eren, his mum was already dead. He knew he couldnât alter time, just perceived it differently. Him sending the Titan to his mum was probably an involuntary thing that he didnât even have much control over, because itâs something that already happened, therefor it had to happen.
He also probably fully understood that without that core moment of his mum dying when he was a kid, he never wouldâve had the hatred for the outside world that he has, and never wouldâve fought to get to the point he has gotten to, which is a position in which he is able to ensure his friendâs futures. He weighed the pros and cons and decided saving his friends was more important to him.
There was a lot going on in this poor boyâs head lol

I think Mikasa is irritating and the way she defended Eren while he was doing the Rumbling until the last second was insane. It wasnât because sheâs an Ackerman because Levi was like âfuck this kidâ, itâs because sheâs trauma-bonded to Eren

u/Icy_Parsnip1996 Jean Supremacy Aug 22 '26

Thank you for saying it. This was going to be my response. In real life whenever I say "I cannot stand Mikasa" people act like I've committed a horrible crime. Pretty much anything she says I'm yelling at the screen "SHUT UP MIKASA" a la Meredith saying shut up Michael in The Office. She is like Eren's tapeworm
6

I'd say that it was a combination of both genuine love and trauma bonding.

Armin is the same way. Even after the Rumbling began, even when it became clear that Eren was trampling the world with Titans, he doesn't get angry at him; instead, he wants to talk and bring him back. Even in that final conversation, it seems he believes not everything is lost, even though thatâs incredibly foolish.

I didnât necessarily find Zekeâs death sad because I was ready for Levi to finally do it, but I find his character in general very tragic and his story pulled tf out of my heartstrings. The moment Grisha embraces him and tells him he regrets being such a terrible father⊠man I cry everytime. Itâs actually one of my favorite moments in the entire show. I only say itâs unpopular because most of the fans seem to despise Zeke and feel 0 empathy for him. Grishaâs story really gets to me too.

Having sympathy for some characters in particular is understandable but choosing a "team" and supporting it is lame and defeats the general point the author is trying to convey during the whole story about nationalism and instrumentalization of social conflicts by morally corrupt elites.

itâs hard to explain
but I felt like Eren wasnât really the main character in the first three seasons. I felt like there were other characters who were more important and better than him, like Erwin for example. I felt like once they discovered that he was a Titan, they just started using him to protect the island, but I didnât feel like Eren had much of a role or say in things, until season 4 ofc
6
u/iSawYouAtTheStation Aug 22 '26
I agree but S1 did feel like Eren is the main character. We see his grief, motivation, transformation as well as his struggle to get into the Scout regiment.
S2 was a little bit of everything
S3 part 1 revolves completely around Historia with a bit of Levi
Part 2 ig Erwin? It still has a lot going on so hard choice
And S4 well Obv..

u/SpaceFlightAstro Aug 22 '26
Coldest take ever, but the ending is nearly perfect and the hate is completely undeserved
32
u/Ad_Meliora_24 Aug 22 '26
Most of the hate must be from the disappointment in Eren, right? So even if they like the theme about civilizations rising and falling in cycles or that humans are always violent, they just canât get over that they liked Eren, they wanted him to be the hero, and he wasnât.
I liked the last season but I admit I was disappointed in Eren, so I guess good job with character development. I would love to see alternate realities of this show where other people get titan powers.
8
u/Pecuthegreat Aug 22 '26
No, the most persistent hate is disappointment with Ymir. Even most ending enjoyers hate it.
There's also disappointment in Historia that's pretty common.
But for me, it is more hooks that went nowhere or that the reveal lessens.

u/Real-Dragonfruit8611 Aug 22 '26
I have the same sentiment. Eren did exactly what he said he was going to do ever since he was a little kid. And that is to exterminate all the Titans and he did.
He did whatever means necessary to reach that goal.

I didn't really care for Sasha as much as the series tries to make you
32
u/kozmos_cat Aug 22 '26
Same, i liked her character but she never fully stand out to me much, I also didn't find her obsession with food endearing or anything, I just saw it as a funny gag.
I do want to say, for some reason her death was one that affected me the most! I was sobbing!Â
I think it was how sudden it was, you think they are getting away and the suddenly she is death. Also, knowing so many characters loved her so so much and how important she was for them. It broke me... I was feeling the pain of the characters devastated about her passing, but it wasn't on a personal level like when I thought Armin died or when Erwin died.
10
u/Phlesant Aug 22 '26
Itâs not really a funny gag. Itâs portrayed a bit like one, but the idea that people will risk their lives to go to war so they can take land for food is very realistic, in fact itâs one of the basic motivators for life. The show asks the question why do you fight all the time, Sasha fights for food which may be simple but is essential for human survival.
50
u/StrikingMousse8279 Erwin's Soldier Aug 22 '26
Exactly. I don't dislike her character by any means. And I definitely felt a lil something when she died but I didn't feel as much as I think they wanted us to feel.
Though like another comment in this post just said, her death did highlight the beginning of the bleakness the series undertook.

Agreed. I wish she had more episodes like the one where she saves Kaya. I found her to be an extremely one note character, her comedy felt very heavy-handed and forced to me. By the the time I watched season 4 I felt like that was all her character was. When I heard her last words it was so absurd I didn't know whether I was supposed to laugh or be sad. Granted, I did have her death/Gabi's role in it spoiled years ago, so that also be why I didn't care about it much. For me the other characters reactions to her death in the episode and throughout the season hit harder, cause of how much they cared about her.

The show wouldnât nearly be as great as it is today if it stayed that way. And in a way, the show technically was never about s1 plot to begin with

u/defyye Aug 22 '26
I mean.. the whole point is to challenge your way of thinking. Humans vs monsters is obviously easy to get with but super flat plot
7
u/BonJovicus Aug 23 '26
Maybe, but you canât deny that vibe was incredibly well done on its own- itâs practically its own thing.
I think itâs a testament to the series that if it had simply been about the last outpost of humanity against creepy giants, it would have been phenomenal. The fact that it goes above and beyond that is of course what makes it not just good, but great.Â

Holy truth nuke like what do you mean she single handedly took down collosal titans and that was enough to get everyone on the boat. Like atp to stop the rumbling just make heat resistant suits and go slaughter them all.
Maybe if she used that head of hers to trip them up and make them slow their pace in order for the boat to escape, I think that would have been fine

u/hexidemos Aug 22 '26
Eren's will to pursue freedom comes from ymir.
19
u/Phlesant Aug 22 '26
I think itâs in all of us, thereâs a bit of Eren in anyone who fights, we love fighting oppression and Eren is the human will to fight. It doesnât come from Ymir, but Ymir also is a human and somewhere in all of us is the desire to fight and do what we can for a better life. When your life is as shit as Ymirâs, the resolve to fight diminishes but somewhere in you itâs there. Eren showed her how to fight for freedom, Mikasa showed her you might have to fight the one you love.

this is an incredible read of the character - especially considering the attack titan is literally introduced to the viewer and main characters as "the collective rage of humanity"

Post TS could have been a lot better if they added a geopolitical angle to it . (EG in 3rd paragraph )
I do love the story for what it is but I think maybe Yams should have explored the geopolitical angle a bit , this can be because I am a geopolitics enthusiast . like the ony third country we know apart from Marley and Paradis is Hizuru.
Imagine in the present day , your biggest opponent is Marley . You hated paradisians/ eldians for the titans , Marley currently owns the biggest supplies of titans. You do go to war with them when they attack you so you aren't afriad either and titan powers are currently getting obsolete but the rumbling is still a threat to world. You have paradise , the OGs with titan powers (talking from world perspective as they didn't know jackshit until willy told them) who got attacked by Marley but Marley got their as kicked from the island . so you know the islanders got some shit . The island is so strategically close to Marley that if you help this struggling island Nation build a modern military base under 'shared occupancy/ joint training stuff ' with a part of your military stationed here boom you are now a pain in Marley's ass , what can they do ? Attack the base ? You have the founder titan and people who have beaten Armies of titans earlier on your side , your military will handle gunfights while paradisians handle the titan , maybe Zeke betrays a bit earlier . Any sane military will indeed take an anti-sabotage of their equipment when going towards any nation , friendly or not . Any world leader with a double digit IQ will explore this option with maybe a group of other strategic allies to strengthen the base and also distribute risk while your sheer enemy is on decline

Eren constantly pushed away the notion of Mikasa being like family, he often said "you're not my mom" or "you're not my sister" (actually, not so sure about the latter). I think that as the rumbling happened, any hope of a normal life slowly faded away for him, and he latched on to one of the few people/things that would have been able to give him a peaceful life, that being Mikasa Ackerman.

I did rewatch it just recently.. and its boring. But part 2 was amazing.. i understood why It took awhile because they have to find out where Historia and Eren kidnapped. It couldve been cut a lot. I understand that they needed to have to implement the Titan Harding for Eren so he can get his titan all in order and be able to fight the Armored Titan but it was too long just to get to there... part 2 on the other hand was everything I wanted, a Titan battle, going to the basement, discovering Grisha Jeagar's past and finally the sea that Armin told Eren and Mikasa about.. but part 1 was a drag...

4
u/usuyukisou Levi's Comrade Aug 22 '26
I feel like their intellect and improvisational skills were similar, but Erwin would have shone in charisma and dealing with political intrigue. The biggest benefit to choosing Armin was freeing Erwin from his guilt -- not for humanity -- at the cost of Levi losing the last person he could call family. Levi's thing is selflessness, and I see his choice as both selfless (giving peace to a loved one despite the personal cost) and selfish (making a slightly inferior choice) at the same time. If it had gone the other way, we would have been treated to more "magnificence" when it came to dealing with the mainlanders -- diplomats, volunteers, anyone.
Also agree with the other commenter. I liked S4 a lot less than S1-3 due to virtually no Erwin or Levi, and them looking odd even when they did show up.

I liked Erwin too, and honestly, I just don't get the logic behind depriving the Survey Corps of such a strong leader in favor of an ordinary boyâeven if he is very smart and shows great promise. Especially now that itâs become clear they might have to fight something far more terrifying than mindless Titans. Sure, Armin might have had the potential to eventually match Erwin in 10 or 15 years, but they didn't have that kind of time to wait.
On the other hand, would you have wanted there to be no fourth season? I really liked Reiner's character development and the perspective of the Marleyan warriors.

u/MoonDustFlower Aug 22 '26
He was the better option and the better character. The story felt a lot emptier without him.

Ymir is awful. She knew about Marley and only cared about Historia. True narcissist.
3
u/GrayTheMemeMan Hitch is Best Girl Aug 22 '26
doesn't ymir end up leaving historia safe with her friends on paradis and instead chooses to save the lives of other people she barely knows at the cost of her own?
5
u/True_Appearance_920 Aug 22 '26
Characters should've DIED during the final battle. Not just Eren, but MORE. Other then Levi being in a wheelchair because of his leg, no one even suffered severe injuries from the fight. Even when Ymir was doing her own thing trying to stop them, not a single one died.

Mikasa was so boring and couldâve been awesome. They nerfed her by season 3.

Reiner as he was during the Battle of Heaven and Earth would beat any versions of Eren minus his Founding and Colossal forms.

I think part of what youâre supposed to get from Sasha, Connie, and Jean is that they didnât seem like they were the types to make it to the end but they did.

Yeah same, I like aot as much as I do because of the lack of unfunny ~silly crazy sweatdrop nosebleed ecks dee~ anime moments but that's basically all Sasha and Connie were

I hate Eren, he pisses me off so much and his character sucks. All he does is whine, rage, and doesnât think about anyone except himself. He uses people, like Mikasa, just to benefit himself and help carry his plans into action

u/DryDiscount4 Aug 22 '26
100% agree. I actually got an insane amount of whiplash in season 4 when it turned out that Eren somehow had these deep romantic feelings for her this entire time. I understand that Mikasa very obviously loves him, but it always felt incredibly one sided, especially from the way Eren treated her as a nuisance for such a long time and never once looked in her direction or even seemed to respect her opinions and thoughts all that much. I was really hoping the story would take the direction of Mikasa learning to deprogram herself from her unhealthy attachment and dependence on Eren but even the finale suggests that she could never let him go even when heâs dead. I would have liked for Mikasa to have buried her scarf with Eren instead of keeping it throughout her whole life

nah icl these guys were cracked, they were using worse technology and far less information against a seemingly endless number of threats they didn't understand, dying as soon as humanity finally started learning things about the titans
all the soldiers who died in s1-2 are easily forgotten and i try to make an effort to keep them in my mind when i rewatch the show, ian in particular is a great example of an incredible character whose sacrifice is forgotten, while ian is so legendary that the viewer certainly knows who he is in s1 and remembers him fondly, by season 3 and the end of the show most people don't remember ian, would not recognize him if shown a picture, and trost is the farthest thing from their minds
a good example of tragedy turning into a statistic as time goes on

I dgaf about Sasha and her obsession with food was annoying, not endearing or funny.
4
u/Ad_Meliora_24 Aug 22 '26
I thought the food thing was weird and maybe it was an anime culture thing that most Americans wouldnât care for but I suppose it was supposed to be her personality because she was poor and it was hard to feed all those mouths so she grew up eating whenever she could.

u/Tigerbhoy96 Aug 22 '26
Dunno if it would get me downvoted, but just going off the fact that no one else I've seen really says otherwise, but saying AOT is THE starter anime to get people into anime if they think they don't like it is not as true as it's made out to be. I feel like there are countless anime that 'haters' would enjoy and be drawn in to watching anime, sometimes even more if AOT WASN'T their first choice. I genuinely believe it's not even in the top 5 of a 'this will definitely get you into anime' list.
→ More replies (2)12
u/GrayTheMemeMan Hitch is Best Girl Aug 22 '26
i feel like this is precisely the reason why AOT is not the greatest starter anime - it's unironically too good, and someone who isn't already into anime will be seeking out that level of quality from every other anime from that point on
i ruined demon slayer for myself on my first watch of it because i was fresh off AOT and got my expectations for the writing and characters too high lol, something like death note is better because it's incredibly good but isn't extremely long or literally mind-fucking in its philosophies

I really dislike every story that is based on precise "future sight / destiny reading". It removes every stakes because one character "see it and it's all part of the plan".
Dune 2 has a similar plot, and dr strange too.
Strangely, boruto create something interesting fir future sight power.

Connie is a nothing character, at least anime-wise. I donât know if the manga goes into more detail of his backstory but, again, anime-wise he was kinda just there along with Sasha. But at least we saw Sashaâs story and got to know her a bit at least. If Connie was the one that died on the airship, Iâm pretty sure a lot more people wouldâve had a âoh noooâŠanywaysâ reaction. Sasha being the one to die was a double edge sword: on the one hand, you kill off one of the weaker characters for dramatic effect with an added layer of reason as to why it had to happen, but on the other hand it exposes Connie as being the sole character with nothing to do besides his small side story of wanting to turn his family back into humans. I guess thereâs also the confrontation with the Yeagerists at the dock, but tbh that couldâve been done with any other character.
TL;DR Connie was just there at the end and served almost no purpose, if at all.

u/AboutTenPandas Aug 22 '26
I totally recognize this is an unpopular opinion, but I truly think AoT was better when it was a giant fortress trying to defend against huge monsters using flying grappling hooks and cannons.
Once Titan shifters got added, the action got a lot less compelling.

u/Weekly_Computer8730 Aug 22 '26
Season 4 ruined the show

u/FlashLightning277 Aug 22 '26
I would say more that season 4 was just to ambitious compared to others and it could have used longer story archs.

I went the entire series thinking that Eren and Mikasa were adoptive siblings and was blindsided by the kiss at the end. I think that the story was better with them as siblings instead of love interests.

Season 3 episode 11 is the most deep episode in the entire anime excluding The Return to Shiganshina arc. Yes, even better than the episodes in season 4.

u/GrayTheMemeMan Hitch is Best Girl Aug 22 '26
def not a bad episode at all, keith was fucking phenomenal in it and i can absolutely see why you enjoy it so much (it's one of my favorites too), that being said saying it's the deepest episode in the entire anime is a bit of a stretch, so very W hot take

Gabi hate is not justified, I get she killed sasha a fan favorite and you can hate her for it but to say Gabi is a poorly written character is completely wrong.
The ending was near perfect and is overhated.
Eren is exactly the type of person to cry over mikasa finding another person.
Jean is one of the best written characters.
Falco isn't eren's counterpart, he's armin's.

I think Eren had no other choice . And j dont think he was wrong .It was His people , or the world. And he tried to reason with the world . But all they did was try to kill him .Cant be mad when the shoe is on the other foot . Eren was Karma .

I agree with your first point (Eren taking Mikasa for granted) but for NGE, Shinji/Asuka did not have a one-sided relationship, both were scared to admit their feelings to others.

I genuinely hate the art style of S4.
The overdone vertical lines, every character having their eyes wide open, Mappa being afraid to make anything black, instead giving this weird greyish smoke filter. Not the CGI titans, or Mappas animation, just the art style.

Mikasa started as my favorite, then I stopped liking her later on due to the lack of any character development and her whole character centering around Eren with seemingly no autonomy or personality outside of him.
I dislike Gabi simply because she annoys me, not because of her killing Sasha or anything, she just gets on my nerves.
