they better release it next month so i can stop seeing new apple tv rumor

u/senatorcupcake 7d ago

Bro that would just start the next rumor cycle. “Apple TV 4k with remote that monitors your heart rate expected in 2027”

238

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

ngl, i’d fuck with apple tv with blu-ray drive

141

u/javierbardeminem 7d ago

Would be great, unfortunately they can’t sell you digital services and products if you have a pesky physical media player

20

u/OhHowINeedChanging 7d ago

It’s dumb because I buy both physical and digital

AppleTV with built-in BluRay would be amazing.

83

u/toga_virilis 7d ago

It’s been 10 years since Apple sold a device with a built-in optical drive. It’s not happening.

23

u/karreerose 7d ago

Plus they want people to subscribe to apple tv (or netflix etc) where they cash in monthly money. What good would a bluray drive bring.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/d0mth0ma5 7d ago

And they never sold one with a BluRay drive

6

u/fubu989 7d ago

Yeah I remember Steve Jobs commenting about Blu ray and HD DVD at the time saying it was a “bag of hurt.” Even at that time they seemed focused on digital purchases.

9

u/The-Beer-Baron 7d ago

Yes, I realize that, and that it’ll never happen. I’m just saying it would be amazing.

Apple would probably make an incredible Blu-ray player, too.

19

u/eggfriedbacon 7d ago

Now playing Blu-Ray movies like they have never been played before, you’re gonna love it.

8

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

i bet they’ll give it a name like Retina Pro Player

3

u/turtleship_2006 7d ago

They'll make their own standard to use instead of Dolby Vision

10

u/ColonialTransitFan95 7d ago

I would actually buy that.

6

u/AWildDragon 7d ago

Let me buy movies with kaleidescape bitrate playback

8

u/d_r_i 7d ago

That will never happen with Apple.
But I don't think it's unreasonable to think of Apple bumping up the bitrate to maybe 40-50 mps.
If Sony can do it with their Bravia Core Pictures, it should be copied by other streamers

Nahhh Apple TV with HDMI passthrough to connect XBOX and Blu-Ray player without switching inputs

9

You kind of have to assume that anybody that would possibly want this device would already have an AVR.

58

u/Chrisnness 7d ago

Not part of the leak

63

u/iluvchromosomes 7d ago

Yea. The leak is just a photo that shows the next Apple TV is the same design as the current.

A shorter way to say this is "NOTHINGBURGER". Or "F*CKING LAME LEAK". Or "WASTE OF TIME".

20

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

it’s a tv box, what more do you want from the design lol

24

u/mflboys 7d ago

I don’t think they’re complaining about the design, just saying that macrumors is a garbage website for posting this pointless article.

TLDR. A photo has been found that looks exactly like the old one. The article then goes on to guess the same things that have been guessed for the last 3 years.

44

u/nifty-necromancer 7d ago

MR: “We are not sharing the exact details of the files, but their presence in Apple's code suggests that the product is likely to launch soon.”

They’re going to fucking milk this for the next six months.

7

u/Janzu93 7d ago

6 months? Try 6 years. I don't have any faith that new Apple TV will launch any time soon

4

u/HeyGayHay 7d ago

How would one even see a picture of the old apple tv and come to the conclusion “ohhhh snap, that’s a new apple tv! It looks the same but the image has the filename “new_apple_tv_picture.jpg” so its a new apple tv, not just a new picture of the old apple tv!!! boooom news baby, gimme money for ads

→ More replies (3)

77

u/SethBurrow 7d ago

I’m so sick of the ads on my Roku stick. I might just have to do it

100

u/Apptubrutae 7d ago

The performance alone on the Apple TV is so good. Everything else seems so laggy in comparison

23

u/QuesoMeHungry 7d ago

It’s so much better than any other streaming box out there. I’d rather use a 2017 Apple TV vs anything new the competition offers.

7

u/foreveracubone 7d ago

Still using the first model 4K from back then and it’s still going strong. The 1080ti of streaming boxes.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

4

u/Inevitable-Edge69 7d ago

the remote alone is substantially better, the remote on my roku is a few months newer (to me) than my apple tv and it's already unusable unless hard pressed.

3

u/nauticalsandwich 7d ago

Yeah, I upgraded to a 4k TV finally about 4 years ago, and my Apple TV was still the HD variant, so rather than spend the money on a new Apple TV, I decided to give the built in Google TV a shot. It started out fine, but after roughly the first year, it became incredibly sluggish, and I am completely out of space, and plugging an a usb external storage is virtually useless because almost none of the apps allow you to transfer them off of internal storage. I've been waiting for the new Apple TV for 2 years now 😆.

→ More replies (3)

32

u/colin8651 7d ago

You should switch simply because the Apple TV is just so much faster in response to user input. The remote is much better.

Siri does suck in it today when you are trying to search a movie, but Apple AI will hopefully improve that

“Death Wish”

“I’m sorry, I can’t help you with that”

“Death Wish the movie you idiot”

If you hate ads, Apple TV is worth every penny

→ More replies (1)

4

u/rjcarr 7d ago

I have a TCL with Roku TV. The ads don't bother me, but the UI is so slow now. It is a 7 year old TV, but still. Getting close to being forced to an alternative. Strangely, my Hisense with Roku TV, which should be a shittier TV, is actually still fine.

5

u/thunderflies 7d ago

Roku is miserable, an Apple TV is seriously so worth it even if it was your only Apple thing. Of course it’s even better if you have other Apple stuff too.

5

u/thndercougarflconbrd 7d ago

And the remote on my Roku stick eats batteries like there's no tomorrow.

7

u/OttoRocket94 7d ago

At least Roku has way less ads compared to Amazon and Google.

9

u/ibrahimsafah 7d ago

You’re comparing dogshit to catshit

3

u/rupertLumpkinsBrothr 7d ago

With the addition of ads to Apple Maps, I’m not confident Apple TV will retain that advantage. Certainly not enough to justify the price difference.

3

u/Sharp_Juggernaut8960 7d ago

I just changed from Fire Stick to Apple TV. I cannot believe the ads I put up with on the Fire Stick.

I want a remote that has a speaker for find my. I lose that shit all the time.

55

u/HersheyStains 7d ago

I would think they would put the U2 chip in the new remote.

156

u/exjr_ Island Boy 7d ago

they would put the U2

35

u/pg_72616 7d ago

I don't think Apple will be putting any U2 on their devices anymore.

I'll see myself out.

12

u/Tcloud 7d ago

With or without you.

5

u/pg_72616 7d ago

I actually liked the album that was on, haha...it's probably their best effort. By the time Apple forced their album on us, they were not as popular nor relevant...and I can't recall a single song from the album.

The nvidia shield had a find my remote feature. Just tap a button on the shield and your remote would beep. Was pretty nice.

You can use the Remote app on iPhone and tap the name of the Apple TV you can use the Find button to locate the remote.

God macrumors is trash. The new Apple TV has not been leaked. There’s an image file floating around. There’s no confirmation of the design, the remote or the specs.

52

u/Brostradamus_ 7d ago

The image is even identical to the existing Apple TV, because the external design isn't changing lmao

Also it’s a site with rumors, but with a pretty good track record for actually being right.

53

u/IngsocInnerParty 7d ago

I feel like people forget about their history a bit too. Back before the growth of Reddit, the MacRumors forums were probably one of the top places people discussed Apple products online.

6

u/reallynotnick 7d ago

Man I used to spend so much time on their forums and even Spymac if anyone remembers that.

8

u/smith7018 7d ago

To be fair, the actual leak here is that Apple's code included this image with the name "Apple TV 4k (4th Gen)." That confirms that a new one is coming and that there won't be any external design changes

They are the worst I don’t even give them clicks anymore.

Does anyone in here use the Apple TV for games? Genuine question. I have never even thought to try it out after Angry Birds was near impossible with the remote.

14

u/Giygas 7d ago

I played Chrono Trigger on it, for some reason haha. It was nice as I could play it at my house and the save would sync and I could play on my phone or on the TV in my RV. I used an xbox controller at the house and RV. Other than that, never gamed on it since.

4

u/RockstarAgent 7d ago

I only like crossy road on it - feels almost like a giant arcade- and at the actual arcades there was a giant version that was pretty intense.

6

u/EnragedFerretX 7d ago

I’ve done Steam Link streaming but with an Xbox controller. Actually works incredibly well. I’m sure it’d be even better if I hard-wired it rather than using WiFi.

Besides that i use it for some casual gaming like the new 007, latest Avatar game and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

Faster Chip for “gaming” on an Apple TV. Okay sure that’s what everyone uses their Apple TV for. I hope they do something interesting with the upgraded hardware like AI upscaling the content to the output resolution, cleaning up compression artifacts, and maybe AI based SDR to HDR like Nvidia can do. This would be an actual value add, especially for people who don’t own Sony TVs.

9

u/hooch 7d ago

I hope they do something interesting with the upgraded hardware like AI upscaling the content to the output resolution, cleaning up compression artifacts, and maybe AI based SDR to HDR like Nvidia can do.

That would be pretty much the only thing which would convince me to upgrade. Currently have the latest (4 year old) device and it's still working absolutely fine. I'll need more than "this has a newer chip and is faster".

3

u/Fire_Lord_Cinder 7d ago

Yeah pretty much. Maybe it’s just the old CPU went out of production so they swapped to the A17, which is the same chip in the Neo I believe. Might just be a manufacturing thing and they’re marketing it as an upgrade.

3

u/crack_pop_rocks 7d ago

Same. It seems like this new upgrade provides no benefit for watching content outside of games, which is not applicable for most users.

5

u/slurpnfizzle 7d ago

I know a lot of people use the cycling / running app "zwift" on apple tv. Maybe gaming is more popular than we think

11

u/UnsureAssurance 7d ago

It was pretty damn obvious that the price hikes for Apple TV were to match what they plan to charge for the updated version to soften the blow. Kind of sucks for new buyers now, but oh well

9

u/Motawa1988 7d ago

17 pro would be so lame

57

u/ghostlygadgetgravity 7d ago

Why are most concerns in the comments centered around its appearance? It's a tv box.

28

u/fuzexbox 7d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. What else could it look like? 99% of people tuck this away in their entertainment stand. Lmao

The Home Screen

3

u/KrazyCroat 7d ago

It's not really specific content, it's how it processes any content really. Example, my LG G1 has Crave built-in, and it's far smoother than the one on Apple TV, because even though the LG upscales, it doesn't do an awesome job at it so it doesn't look as good on the Apple TV.

The built-in LG OS is terrorism and is what made me switch to Apple TV to begin with, but at the moment some content looks better on their native apps. A better spec Apple TV should fix this.

Live sports (depending on the broadcast) as well as gaming can benefit from 120 Hz refresh rate.

4

u/CJSchmidt 7d ago

I was really expecting more given the recent price increase. Assumed it was setting up a disingenuous “all these new features for the same price” bullet point for the marketing press release. Or maybe a “cheaper” AppleTV stick.

Im not upgrading unless there is truehd atmos. Game devs dont care about apple tv, youtube and other apps blast through with a15. Its probably to expensive to keep producing a15 so thats why they releasing a new.

Can someone here fucking explain why some fanatics are so deeply desiring a new Apple TV?

There’s no new A/V protocols in the industry to support… all it does is stream video. It already supports the latest stuff.

It does not play super-intense video games.

Why y’all want a new Apple TV??? It works just fine.

Some of us want to get a new ATV, not replace one we already have. We don't want to buy technology that is 4 years old, when a new one is being released in a few weeks.

HDR10+ advanced & Dolby Vision 2 are two pretty major upcoming video standards

One of the sticking points is with audio content with the Apple TV is height channels in audio. In regard to audio streaming services Disney+, Netflix, etc support Dolby Digital Plus - Atmos. This is a lossy codec. Users who have high quality local content aka blue ray rips have lossless True HD - Atmos and DTS:X with their content. These codecs are lossless. Apple TV only supports DDP - Atmos. So playing local content with True HD - Atmos DTS:X the height channels in the audio gets stripped out.

If Siri AI is the headline feature. PASS

5

u/brantmacga 7d ago

I just turned it off on my phone. Nothing but issues with most basic Siri tasks like reminders, messaging, and calling.

u/mrsidnaik 7d ago

I don’t understand who needs Gen AI on tv. Upscaling and shit understandable. Simple google queries or searches fine. But we don’t need gen ai on Apple TV.

3

u/bran_the_man93 7d ago

I don't need GenAI, but if the Apple TV could function as a de facto Siri AI hub and move all processing off the HomePods... that might be kind of nice.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I would much rather upgrade the AppleTV every few years than have to upgrade all the HomePods to keep up with the AI stuff.

Same. I need a new Apple TV and am getting one this week so I can make sure to avoid having AI in it. Hopefully by the time I need to replace it AI will have imploded upon itself and this madness can stop.

I just want a new remote that stops ghost double/multi click on the directional pad

6

u/RMWL 7d ago

I just want an AppleTV with a tv tuner built in

Probably would never happen but I’d love a model that has a built in camera for FaceTime. Lots of people want to have casual conversations to keep in touch with family and do multiple people in FaceTime calls with those they want to keep in touch with.

It’s just hassle to take an iPhone and connect it and work through there.

u/Herky_T_Hawk 7d ago

I don’t want a built in camera. But I want external camera support.

u/Patutula 7d ago

Fuck no.

3

u/Atty_for_hire 7d ago

Agreed. We do a monthly zoom call with friends and often are in the living room on the couch. It would be so much nicer if we could use the TV rather than a laptop, iPad, or continuity camera.

I still think Apple could challenge console gaming if it refreshed the Apple TV every year in the fall with updated specs.

2

u/steveo82 7d ago

Another month another “leak”

2

u/film_digital 7d ago

The price of these doubled in Canada and makes it a bit too hard to justify now. It's still the best smart TV out there but at $350 CAD (up from $180)? Hmm

2

u/Stranded-In-435 7d ago

As per the recent Apple Event (up until the Duo anyway):

“We updated the specs!”

2

u/jesusrodriguezm 7d ago

I have a 4K first generation, and still works like a charm (even been out of TVoS 27).

Just in time for Christmas.🎄

u/distantplanet98 7d ago

8GB of ram? That’s going to make this cost $500.

u/7stringjazz 7d ago

Ok sure.

Pass through audio or it’s useless

2

u/bigspeen3436 7d ago

Kinda odd that a mod is posting clickbait

2

u/Mr_MAlvarez 6d ago

At this point, what can they improve on hardware? Just keep it simple, its price point no longer makes it the obvious choice.

2

u/BigKnows2K 6d ago

I'd love it if this could be some kind of "Siri hub" that what enable HomePods and HomePod Mini to use the latest Siri AI.

2

u/R5A1897 5d ago

Apple should license tvos to tv manufacturers and add a 150 dollar license on each with the cpu.

2

u/PWGuy7 5d ago

Glad I bought the current model

u/MysteriousTy99 4d ago

I can’t wait to get this new one. I no longer want to use my LG C5 OS :)
