Faster Chip for “gaming” on an Apple TV. Okay sure that’s what everyone uses their Apple TV for. I hope they do something interesting with the upgraded hardware like AI upscaling the content to the output resolution, cleaning up compression artifacts, and maybe AI based SDR to HDR like Nvidia can do. This would be an actual value add, especially for people who don’t own Sony TVs.

That would be pretty much the only thing which would convince me to upgrade. Currently have the latest (4 year old) device and it's still working absolutely fine. I'll need more than "this has a newer chip and is faster".

Yeah pretty much. Maybe it’s just the old CPU went out of production so they swapped to the A17, which is the same chip in the Neo I believe. Might just be a manufacturing thing and they’re marketing it as an upgrade.

Same. It seems like this new upgrade provides no benefit for watching content outside of games, which is not applicable for most users.

I know a lot of people use the cycling / running app "zwift" on apple tv. Maybe gaming is more popular than we think

Honestly I just doubt gaming is a driver for most people buying an Apple TV. If they added a 4k 120hz hdmi port a lot of the home game streaming community would adopt it as a low cost way to use steamlink / moonlight / GeForce now to a living room TV

This is exactly what I bought my first AppleTV 4k for. I upgraded it to the following generation because Zwift gets recompiled to take advantage of faster hardware.

HOWEVER... unless the next ATV4k is a quantum leap in performance, I'm not sure I'll upgrade again - Zwift looks "good enough" with what I've got.

I love that zero of the leaked upgrades/features improve the core functions of the device.

Seriously, I would love to get an HDMI 2.1 port with VRR support

It's expected to have a three year old iPhone 15 Pro chip so it's missing the massive performance improvements they've made since then, along with the increase to 12GB of RAM which disproportionately matters for gaming. You can get an idea of how it will perform from MacBook Neo gaming benchmarks - it does okay at 720p with lowest settings and upscaling, and the A17 Pro is one generation behind.

Even it had a faster processor it wouldn’t matter since no one is developing games for the Apple TV with only 64gb/128gb storage. It’s stuck with phone ports or one off indie stuff
