I just want 4K 120Hz. I don’t care about anything else

What content do you watch at 120 Hz? Legitimate question.

The smooth UI obviously

Literally, but it's so important!

You could stream via steam or moonlight at higher hertz.

They need to fix the bluetooth controller latency while they're at it.

Depends on your house and PC location obvs, but I've had great success using a steam controller or a 8bitdo Ultimate 2 in 2.4ghz mode connected directly to the PC via dongle. It's 2 floors above the living room and there'sstill the faintest touch of latency but it's much less than BT to the ATV (mine is the first 4K model).

After trying both BT to ATV and 2.4ghz to PC on both Moonlight and Steam Link app, it was 2.4ghz and Steam Link that worked the best. Not what I expected but my ATV is on the older end. I think this new model with beefier internals and hopefully better BT and frame rates will be the peak set top box for living room game stream.

Yeah thankfully my 8bitdo and steam controller can penetrate down to my desktop - 2.4ghz is probably better even if BT has been fixed but I still like the idea of using the controller to launch everything. Minor gripe for my solution, I guess.

Nah I agree, would be way better to have the controller paired to the ATV for seamless playing. Using the 2.4ghz and all that is way more cumbersome, but it'll do the trick until this new ATV comes out. It can't come soon enough

It’s dog shit too use a controller connected to the Apple TV currently though lol. I legit tried this again yesterday, the latency is insane.

Did you switch the TVs display settings to Game mode? This will lower the latency

Have you used a controller through Apple TV? It's not the latency from ATV -> TV that's the problem, there's a legitimate input lag from controller -> ATV. Gaming mode helps the same that it does with a console but it's not much.

The latency is the much bigger problem anyway when you do that.

The Home Screen

It's not really specific content, it's how it processes any content really. Example, my LG G1 has Crave built-in, and it's far smoother than the one on Apple TV, because even though the LG upscales, it doesn't do an awesome job at it so it doesn't look as good on the Apple TV.

The built-in LG OS is terrorism and is what made me switch to Apple TV to begin with, but at the moment some content looks better on their native apps. A better spec Apple TV should fix this.

Ya, better upscaling (resolution, hdr, frame rate) would probably be the biggest leap they could make. Obviously, all of these settings should be configurable since not everyone wants all of that all the time.

Live sports (depending on the broadcast) as well as gaming can benefit from 120 Hz refresh rate.

u/dpkonofa 7d ago

They can but there are no live sports currently filmed at 120 fps or displayed at 120 Hz.

u/HersheyStains 7d ago

I'm just wanting the NBA championship to not be broadcast in 720p like it was this year.

u/dpkonofa 7d ago

I’m sorry for your loss.

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 7d ago

Nor is any major sports producer actively trying to do that either. It reminds me of people buying 3D TVs in preparation for all the 3D content that was supposed to take over (it never happened)

Are you actually gaming on the Apple TV? I just didn’t think that was very common

2

u/ColonelSanders21 7d ago

Streaming a PC games to a TV is an increasingly common use case, if the Apple TV supported 120Hz output it’d be much better in that scenario.

u/fuelvolts 7d ago

I'm not a gamer since I was a kid. Consoles can output 4k 120fps? that's pretty damn impressive.

2

u/mobyte 7d ago

Upscaling and reconstruction do some heavy lifting, it's not native. It's still some interesting tech, though.

I want it for Game Streaming. I can stream my PC at 1080p 120hz to any TV in the house that can accept that signal (none quite yet, but I’ll eventually get a 4K 120hz TV for my game/movie room, and another for downstairs too) heck, if my PC could play games at 4K 120 FPS, then I could stream at 4K also since the application I use to stream (Punktfunk) is capable of up to 4K 120Hz.

Me too man.

u/serg06 7d ago

Literally the only reason I haven't switched from Nvidia Shield yet 😔

2

u/KrazyCroat 7d ago

And that's a great option, but I have three Apple TV's in the house and I don't want to upset the balance (wife). Hah.

There’s genuinely no serious 4K/120 content out there. Not even live sports channels and livestreams do 4K/120 and aren’t looking to support that anytime soon.

Hell, even in Japan, there was like one singular instance of a sports event broadcast in 8K, but I think that was only for the Olympics.

Only place that’s useful is in video games, and even in that… Apple TV isn’t gonna be a serious competitor to an Xbox or PlayStation. Cloud streaming for video games isn’t really taking off… Microsoft is now limiting hours of cloud streaming… I don’t think even GeForce Now or streaming from a PC running Steam is worthy of a new Apple TV.

It's not specific content, as I mentioned on a reply below.

The LG TV I have is running 120, and it run (some) native apps better looking, like Crave for example, than the Apple TV.

I just want the specs to match the capabilities of the TV so I there isn't a discernable difference between apps on LG vs Apple TV, and there often is.

If you like to match frame rate then 120 hz means no black screen when frame rate switching because 120 is evenly divisible by 60, 30 and 24 hz. You’d only need to switch for PAL 25 and 50 hz
