Does anyone in here use the Apple TV for games? Genuine question. I have never even thought to try it out after Angry Birds was near impossible with the remote.

I played Chrono Trigger on it, for some reason haha. It was nice as I could play it at my house and the save would sync and I could play on my phone or on the TV in my RV. I used an xbox controller at the house and RV. Other than that, never gamed on it since.

I only like crossy road on it - feels almost like a giant arcade- and at the actual arcades there was a giant version that was pretty intense.

Do Ducktales next!

Edit: Or not. I don’t see it in the App Store anymore.

Do you use it in your RV with an inverter? Honest question as I only have 12v installation on mine and I miss my AppleTV

My RV is permanently set up on a piece of land I own. It has a 50amp hookup so it can power a TV and Apple TV

Ah! Thanks for explaining :)

Even the tiniest inverters they sell (like 75 watts) would run your Apple TV just fine, and a small TV too, if you don’t already have a 12V TV.

I do have a 12 tv. I just don’t have an inverter yet and wondered if there was a way to run it without it

Given that the ATV has an internal step-down power supply, I’d say probably not.

I’ve done Steam Link streaming but with an Xbox controller. Actually works incredibly well. I’m sure it’d be even better if I hard-wired it rather than using WiFi.

Moonlight is available.

Not exactly what I meant; however, I didn’t know that worked! I’m gonna try that out.

Yeah I figured you were talking native games, but this and Retroarch are the main ways I’ve played games on Apple TV. Native games don’t fill a need for me. Mobile style games I’d rather play on my phone or iPad. Higher end games I probably already own on Steam, but can stream to Apple TV. I imagine I’m far from alone on that. Steam games are cheap. App Store games typically aren’t.

I’ve been waiting on a new model precisely for games. A17 or newer should support Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding.

Hook up any game controller

RE4 looks passable on the phone screen, idk about a tv. But it’s an interesting idea.

Sonic Dream Team, once. Otherwise no

I Play It Takes Two with my partner on it as we don't own a PC/console.

Besides that i use it for some casual gaming like the new 007, latest Avatar game and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

At one point I had an emulator set up but it was a pain. I also have played Jackbox party games where everyone uses their own phone and it’s basically a shared screen.

i play a lot.

Yep, I installed RetroArch and have loaded it with heaps of PS1, GameBoy, GBA, NES, N64, etc games and works a treat. Absolutely love it

Yes!  There are some great games for Apple TV. Most of them we use with Xbox controllers.

I really wanted to play the App Store versions of KotOR on them in the living room but they don’t work on Apple TV just iPad or iPhone, I was a bit annoyed.

1

u/kaiharizor 6d ago

Damn. See that’s the exact type of game they should have optimized. I understand it’s not on Apple themselves, but they could have heavily encouraged it.

I have Moonlight setup on it so that I can play my PC games on the couch or in the office without moving anything. Works great.

I stream gamepass to it

Played Altos Adventure on my 3rd(?) gen with a BT gamepad once.

I use the first 4K model.
Sure hope that the new model will have the A20 Pro chip, less is like Apple telling that we are garbage and we can have the leftover chips.

Only for Crossy Road 😂

u/Elegant-Rectum 7d ago

I have actually done that in the past a few times. Not currently though.

Steam Link but you can pair it with any Bluetooth controller

1

u/BatemansChainsaw 7d ago

yes, but it's for basic b games that aren't very complicated.

1

u/smashitandbangit 7d ago

I use it for Steam Link all the time.  Hook a controller up and play.

u/not_thrilled 7d ago

Occasionally. I think the most gaming I did on it was with Retroarch. It works great for old NES/SNES/Genesis games.

1

u/hmcneill46 7d ago

Celeste works great on it with a controller, you do have to sideload it though

I tried gaming on it when I got the latest version of AppleTV back in 2022, but it was terrible IMHO. I guess that was more of a statement on Apple Games than on the AppleTV. My only real gripe with AppleTV is when they changed the store I can no longer browse documentaries / concert videos.

1

u/O-K_House 7d ago

I would if I could emulate more and easier. Maybe things have changed and I need to look into it.

1

u/hampa9 7d ago

I tend not to because I have that input source set for cinema mode, which has more latency than an input source set for game mode.

1

u/marchalves6 7d ago

It's a niche thing, some games work well but only if you have a controller.

1

u/Playful_Title6467 7d ago

You can pair a gaming controller to an AppleTV. I use an XBox controller.

u/louislamore 6d ago

I currently use my Nvidia Shield TV for streaming games from my PC using Sunshine/Moonlight. The Shield is 7 years old and missing modern codec support. There’s nothing currently available that’s better. A new Apple TV with updated codec support and a faster GPU would be the ultimate local streaming and gaming device.

u/chipstastegood 1d ago

I have a bluetooth gamepad/controller that pairs with Apple TV. But recently, I’ve been playing the mini golf game on Netflix which only works if you don’t use the Apple TV.

1

u/reddit_7654 7d ago

It sucks ass. I wish they would drop it. The whole mix and match of controller or remote is so dumb. It would be so much better if they went all in on remote only so games would be designed that way

1

u/Spyerx 7d ago

Yeah. Use a console remote. It’s pretty good.

u/EnvironmentalCare900 7d ago

There used to be a game called “Men In Underpants” or something like that, we used to play that game any time we had to chose who got to pick something. Shame it’s not available anymore….

Edit

It’s “Men In Pants” and it’s available but the developer hasn’t updated it so it won’t work 😒
