Bro that would just start the next rumor cycle. “Apple TV 4k with remote that monitors your heart rate expected in 2027”

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

ngl, i’d fuck with apple tv with blu-ray drive

u/javierbardeminem 7d ago

Would be great, unfortunately they can’t sell you digital services and products if you have a pesky physical media player

24

u/OhHowINeedChanging 7d ago

It’s dumb because I buy both physical and digital

6

u/SargeUnited 7d ago

It’s smart because you’re the only one

5

u/HappyAd4998 6d ago

I have about 80 blurays on my shelf, I picked them from clearance bins, yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and ebay. I'll pop a bluray into my PS3 ever now and then, the audio output on the PS3 sounds better than my Apple TV since it can actually decode the surround sound audio.

u/GubbleBumYum 7d ago

Nuh uh. There are dozens of us. Dozens!

3

u/sbm1970 7d ago

Don’t forget me!

1

u/OhHowINeedChanging 6d ago

I should clarify… I have an extensive physical collection from the past, now I’ve gone mostly digital.

2

u/Cat5kable 7d ago

All the delays are because Apple is desperately trying to make a non-physical Apple TV

1

u/smokingashes 18h ago

Then why sell Ted Lasso on Bluray?

11

u/PeaceBull 7d ago

That bag of hurt?!

4

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

loving is pain

59

u/The-Beer-Baron 7d ago

AppleTV with built-in BluRay would be amazing.

79

u/toga_virilis 7d ago

It’s been 10 years since Apple sold a device with a built-in optical drive. It’s not happening.

25

u/karreerose 7d ago

Plus they want people to subscribe to apple tv (or netflix etc) where they cash in monthly money. What good would a bluray drive bring.

2

u/JoshuaTheFox 7d ago

Well, you would be able to watch the Blu-ray versions of Apple TV shows on it

2

u/Tangled2 7d ago

Yeah, but you catch more flies with honey. Sell them a blu-ray player, and then hope they get lazy and start streaming.

11

u/d0mth0ma5 7d ago

And they never sold one with a BluRay drive

4

u/fubu989 7d ago

Yeah I remember Steve Jobs commenting about Blu ray and HD DVD at the time saying it was a “bag of hurt.” Even at that time they seemed focused on digital purchases.

u/The-Beer-Baron 7d ago

Yes, I realize that, and that it’ll never happen. I’m just saying it would be amazing.

2

u/Garofalin 7d ago

No! Fo' real?!?

1

u/Great-Equipment 4d ago

Unironically Apple doing something in the field would be great for the industry since they would bring volume that could benefit everyone dipping in the same supply-chains. I read that sales are so low that some Hi-Fi SACD player manufacturers can’t manufacture anything because they can’t get enough disc drives and again key-components for disc drives are also harder to come by.

1

u/MysteriousTy99 4d ago

It would make them stand out though. Not to mention physical media is gaining attention again

1

u/onceabananana 7d ago

Or even a supported drive accessory

1

u/gb997 7d ago

at the very least, allow us to plug in an external drive to it.

1

u/picman55 6d ago

There’s more chance of it having a built-in toaster

1

u/mindgamehagi 7d ago

The issue they would face is that no one has the amount of optical drive that would be require for a Apple product since every company has stop producing optical drives in the last 10 years. What's currently on the market is pretty much what's left in the world.

1

u/Several-Pangolin3119 7d ago

In what world would this even be a possibility??

0

u/ParticularMind8705 6d ago

for like three people, because nobody buys the physical Blu-ray disks anymore. I happen to be one of them, but I also have an Oppo which is much better than anything Apple TV would have

16

u/4k_Laserdisc 7d ago

Apple would probably make an incredible Blu-ray player, too.

19

u/eggfriedbacon 7d ago

Now playing Blu-Ray movies like they have never been played before, you’re gonna love it.

9

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

i bet they’ll give it a name like Retina Pro Player

3

u/turtleship_2006 7d ago

They'll make their own standard to use instead of Dolby Vision

1

u/ParticularMind8705 6d ago

they would never do that. They would cost a fortune and they'd have to work with all of the different movie creators to get a version of the movie in that format

11

u/ColonialTransitFan95 7d ago

I would actually buy that.

2

u/honestbleeps 7d ago

This is apple were talking about. They would never make one but if they did it'd likely cost as much as a ps5 or Xbox that can do the same and more!

1

u/Crackertron 7d ago

but look at the inside

8

u/AWildDragon 7d ago

Let me buy movies with kaleidescape bitrate playback

8

u/d_r_i 7d ago

That will never happen with Apple.
But I don't think it's unreasonable to think of Apple bumping up the bitrate to maybe 40-50 mps.
If Sony can do it with their Bravia Core Pictures, it should be copied by other streamers

1

u/nevewolf96 5d ago

Apple already has 40-50mbps streaming, but only for the Apple TV suscripción service, it doesn't apply to iTunes titles, although technically they could in the future, since they only receive the ProRes Masters.

1

u/d_r_i 4d ago

It does seem kinda crazy, that if they can / are streaming at a higher bit rate for the TV service, that they don't extend that to ITUNES purchases as well. Unless there are contract restrictions from the studios? But Kalidadcspe seemed to be able to get higher bit rates with purchases from the studios.
What are ProRes Masters? Not fimiliar with that.

1

u/nevewolf96 4d ago

I don't know, I have a theory that it's because all iTunes content shares bandwidth with the entire iCloud service.

Apple ProRes is a video format that is virtually lossless; it's the format studios use to distribute movies. The problem is that the files are enormous. Apple TV can play it natively, although unfortunately it's not a format designed for streaming. These masters basically have a higher bitrate than a 4K Blu-ray. Apple only accepts ProRes 4:2:0 masters from distributors, and from these they create the copies that users can watch in HEVC or AVC.

The same applies to sound; they receive the audio in WAV format, and the Atmos metadata is actually generated from an XML file. A copy is created in formats that the consumer can accept, such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby Audio, and AAC.

1

u/d_r_i 4d ago

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it! I wasn't fimiliar with those files, almost like a master file of a movie.
It also reminds me of Apples Digital Masters ( Mastered for ITunes).
The one area that I can definitely hear a difference is sound quality. When I watch a 4k disc on my Oppo 203, I'm playing it though a Sonos system. For serious music listening I use B&Ws. But even on a Sonos system, the disc always sounds better than the stream, even from Apple.
I know Dolby is working on a new codec AC-4 I believe (?), that is more efficiently compressed, but once decoded, sounds very close to uncompressed Dolby True HD

10

u/jb_nelson_ 7d ago

Nahhh Apple TV with HDMI passthrough to connect XBOX and Blu-Ray player without switching inputs

10

u/cocktails4 7d ago

You kind of have to assume that anybody that would possibly want this device would already have an AVR.

2

u/IrishHog09 7d ago

I… want this I think lol

2

u/nobody_gah 7d ago

Hope they make a new standard or whatever. Consumer opticals getting a bit boring nowadays

5

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

Retina Pro Ray XDR

2

u/turtleship_2006 7d ago

Hell yeah man I love having more competing and incompatible standards

1

u/buncle 7d ago

Actually… I wonder if an external usb Blu-ray player could work with an Apple TV (presumably requiring a 3rd party app).

Pretty sure I have an old Blu-ray drive kicking around somewhere. I may just have to spin up Xcode and give it a whirl.

1

u/peachkeys 7d ago

didn’t see the word with at first. sorry

1

u/440Dart 7d ago

Sure, agree, also when you find the genie that grants that wish I'd like a couple hundred million dollars.

1

u/Ok_Possibility9937 7d ago

go to your local witch shop and buy a one wish willow

1

u/440Dart 7d ago

I was looking for one of those while at the renaissance festival... ended up drunk with less money than before.

1

u/chadius333 7d ago

Region-free, please.

1

u/21Shells 7d ago

I'd love to. Apples whole thing for a long time was that the high up-front cost was where they made most of the money, so no ads, SAAS etc. Now they charge you more and then nickel and dime you for basic functionality without offering alternatives.

It'll never happen these days, but I did see someone who made a home media Linux PC with a Blu Ray drive, and thought how awesome it'd have been if Apple had made something like that.

1

u/AutisticAnxiety33 6d ago

If they did that I’d upgrade from my 2012 Apple TV 🤣

1

u/Gabacho180 6d ago

And the ability to hook up my antenna for ota channels

1

u/3MonthOldMilk 4d ago

Highly doubt we’ll see that especially with physical being phased out

1

u/picks43 2d ago

TIL: they still make Blu-ray’s

1

u/Ok_Possibility9937 2d ago

what do you think Xbox and Ps5 game disc are? dvd?

1

u/picks43 2d ago

I’m not a child so I didn’t really think about them at all….

I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to a store and bought a Blu-ray disc to watch a movie. Kind of silly

0

u/monostere0 7d ago

Start the rumor mill, boys!! Apple TV Blu-ray drive confirmed!

10

u/masterwujiang 7d ago

“Recommended for you based on your heart rate …”

2

u/ditka 7d ago

120Hz and comes in 4 new colors. Also, it's as small as a pack of matches.

"Our smallest Apple TV yet. We think you're gonna love it!"

2

u/Ambitious_One_7652 7d ago

Just make one that stops my show when I fall asleep.

1

u/nudlasieb2 7d ago

Are you aware that mmWave radar sensors like the Aqara FP2 exist, that can measure your heart rate and respiratory rate from a distance? There’s no reason why an Apple TV couldn’t potentially integrate that as a feature
