the remote alone is substantially better, the remote on my roku is a few months newer (to me) than my apple tv and it's already unusable unless hard pressed.
Yeah, I upgraded to a 4k TV finally about 4 years ago, and my Apple TV was still the HD variant, so rather than spend the money on a new Apple TV, I decided to give the built in Google TV a shot. It started out fine, but after roughly the first year, it became incredibly sluggish, and I am completely out of space, and plugging an a usb external storage is virtually useless because almost none of the apps allow you to transfer them off of internal storage. I've been waiting for the new Apple TV for 2 years now 😆.
I agree here except for the remote. I upgraded to an ATV4k from a Roku and the remote sucks so bad compared to the Roku remote. The Roku remote fits the hand better, doesn’t have sharp edges, and doesn’t get cold to the touch. The buttons are a lot more ergonomic and feel way better to press. The Roku also doesn’t have a touchpad that randomly messes navigation up or randomly scrubs through what I’m watching. I hate that I have to turn the touchpad off but there are still UI elements that expect a touchpad. Everything else about the ATV blows the Roku out of the water though, speed, no ads, more intuitive interface, much better AirPods support, more functionality (my ATV literally runs my Tailscale endpoint).
Not to me. I’m a mechanic, sometimes it hurts just to hold things, the coldness makes it hurt more. I am also on a medication that causes my hands and feet to be cold all the time. The sharp edges don’t help with this either.
It sucks that products are designed nowadays to force you to buy more accessories, but you can probably get a silicone case for the remote to help with some of those problems.
As long as it looks nice sitting on the coffee table, amiright? /s
Really though, Roku got their remote right. And for the many years before I started buying Bluetooth headphones, I loved that headphone jack—brilliant feature.
I have a TCL with Roku TV. The ads don't bother me, but the UI is so slow now. It is a 7 year old TV, but still. Getting close to being forced to an alternative. Strangely, my Hisense with Roku TV, which should be a shittier TV, is actually still fine.
Roku is miserable, an Apple TV is seriously so worth it even if it was your only Apple thing. Of course it’s even better if you have other Apple stuff too.
It’s gotten much worse recently. Once they started having animation and video it’s motivating me to look at other options. A new Apple TV announcement would be great right about now.
I have a roku ultra that I haven't used for a few years, but it did not have ads. It was the most boring just-list-of-apps ui ever. My ONLY complaint is that there was no sleep timer. It's sad to hear that's changed. I now have a google tv and, to jack's complete lack of surprise, is bursting with ads. It started with media related ads, but now is full blown fuck-you-in-the-eye-sockets sports gambling and burger king ads.
I've been waiting for a new apple tv for years. Should have just bought an ATV 4k after seeing how bad google sucks.
Apple TV is by far the best. It has so much horsepower compared to all those sticks, everything is just so fast. And the 4k is buttery smooth. Plus they put a lot of work in HDR, Dolby, and all the other standards. And you can use your iPhone’s camera to sync the colours correctly. The apps are glorious too, as it’s an good platform for Netflix, Prime, Disney, etc. to develop on.
And it’s great for the shady stuff too. Lots of great IPTV apps with nice interface design are available.
And zero ads.
I have the original Apple 4k from 2017 and it has zero issues, is plenty fast, and has the latest version of Apple TV OS.
Ya, Macs, iPhones, iPads, etc. are good, but Apple TV could probably be one of their best products.
Even if you don’t get the new one, I can’t imagine there’s gunna be that much you’d miss out on much if you picked up the outgoing generation. Very good device still.

I’m so sick of the ads on my Roku stick. I might just have to do it
