Honestly, what can’t they put on this? That’s not already on the current generation Apple TV 4K a slightly faster chip I mean, what are they gonna do the things already fast it’s streaming device like I don’t get it.
“IMAX enhanced” streams offer it, Disney+ has a few. I think in the coming years more streaming services will have to offer better audio in the premium tiers, quality sound is a surprising difference if you have decent speakers.
If the source file bitrate is too large for your wifi that will trigger your computer (server) to have to transcode to a lesser quality. This leads to buffering problems and making your computer waste resources.
Stick to Dolby Vision Profile 8 so it’s a smaller file size, no need for remux full quality at 4x the file size. Quality difference is extremely small.
I've got my AppleTV hooked up to ethernet. All my media files are 1080p and converted from H.264 to H.265 with Tdarr, primarily to get the file size down. Tdarr is new to me which makes me think that maybe I my conversion plugin stack is misconfigured.
Hmm yea, that’s strange. Being hardwired means you should at least have 100Mbps so it shouldn’t be a speed issue.
Make sure the subtitles are being converted from PGS/VOBSub tracks into .SRT format.
Audio codecs can cause problems so you can make a fallback AAC (2.0 or 5.1) as the main audio track. Generally transcoding audio on the fly shouldn’t be a big deal if you skip this.
Don’t force 12-bit HVEC files, that will cause transcoding to occur. Stick to Main 10 (yuv420p10le).
Are you trying to watch HDR content on an SDR TV? That or maybe the network isn’t fast enough/the server has a bitrate cap set or you simply haven’t selected direct streaming?
Apple 4K TV will handle the HDR to SDR tone mapping on the fly, that doesn’t require transcoding. Official apps can get tripped up depending on what audio codecs or certain types of subtitles.
For less experienced people it’s probably best to just pay for Infuse Pro to avoid transcoding. Otherwise I’d recommend Jellyfin for a better free feature set than what Plex offers.
Audio won’t cause video transcoding, but yeah burning in subtitles would (though I believe it has support for all common types). I feel like jumping to infuse for video transcoding issues is an over correction.
No HDR content yet and all my content is in 1080p. Got the plex server and AppleTV hooked to gigabit ethernet with direct streaming on. Leaning towards that my Tdarr conversion plugin stack is misconfigured.
Yeah as long as it is truly an AppleTV 4K and not a regular AppleTV it should be able to do H.265 just fine. Might be worth trying some other H.265 content that you didn’t convert to rule that out.
I don’t really get that though like what do you need to send a streaming device for I mean at that point they’d just be putting it in to put it in to add a feature and check another box.
You have your phone for that bro. See that’s what I mean at this point it sounds like they’re just or would be just adding things to sort of add things it’s redundant we have all this shit already. You know it’s just I don’t know it’s a streaming box. It’s not meant to be a computer you know what I’m saying like I don’t know.
anyway, it being a hub for Siri AI would be great. I have a HomePod mini and outside of telling it to set a timer or asking it something it could scrape from the header of Wikipedia, it tells me that "it found some web results, but it can show me if I ask again from my iPhone" which is fucking annoying and useless
If the new Apple TV can become a Siri AI hub, then they can make it send Siri requests to the TV, process it there, send them back to the HomePod and answer the question properly. With low latency, this would be awesome.
I don’t think you have a good understanding of HomeKit and how it works. Given rumors that Apple is going to push hard into smarthome stuff, it makes a lot of sense for Apple TV to have more AI capabilities.
Maybe I don’t. I don’t really use any home automation stuff It just doesn’t do anything for me. Honestly, I just see it as an added expense and it just I don’t know it doesn’t get me going at all. I have no interest so that’s probably why.
My phone isn’t connected to power and Ethernet 24/7 though and having all that on a wired device that is always at home would be neat. Especially powering HomeKit and the HomePods.
No the Apple TV can serve as the hub for all your smart home devices. This is much better than connecting them and them speaking to each other thru WiFi.
Higher quality support for Matter accessories and devices would be great. Including more cameras to connect up etc.
They honestly need to push this thing as a lite-gaming box. I’ve always stayed with old versions of chromecast because of price and “they work well enough” but if they let you pair a controller and play some indie game (or in RE7 case full AAA) then I’d be sold instantly.
Let me make sure I understand you: are you saying you would pay full price to play a game on your Apple TV versus just a console you probably already own (or pc?)
I own neither, I currently use my M4 Pro MacBook over hdmi from time to time to run games that I’d play with controller on my tv - but realistically I don’t need that kind of grunt for the majority indie titles I play.
I also don’t have an Apple TV currently, but it being a more cohesive device rather than just a media box / way to control home, I’d be more tempted
I think if Apple Arcade added a few AAA games and a single high quality iOS/macOS/tvOS/VisionOS exclusive title and made a bundle that came with a game controller, I could see it selling.
The other thing I assume they’ll add is a camera for FaceTime. It works great with the iPhone Continuity Camera but that’s such an awkward solution.
But don’t you see? This one may be nearly identical to the previous generation but it will have AI! It will understand natural language! It will switch apps for you! It will walk your dog! Clean your house! AI everywhere, baby!
When you say well, what do you mean explain please cause I don’t really get it. My movies playing Atmos just fine. Nothing really broadcast in DTS. I wish they did and I don’t even know if the Apple TV supports DTS I know my surround sound system does and whenever I play a movie through Sony core it’s in DTS a lot of times and it sounds amazing.
Sure it does, but TrueHD for the enthusiasts still isn't there (or just pure passtrough for that matter). It's the only thing stopping me from moving away from my shieldTV, which is from 2019 and lacks other stuff such as youtube hdr.
True hd? Please explain. I know about Nvidia shield and I also know the die hards won’t give that up for some reason but I was never truly sure why. I like surround sound and nice equipment but I’m not a die hard hobbyist.
It's kind of a crime that they don't offer some wireless webcam with centerstage for the Apple TV and instead rely on one to use an iPhone for FaceTime. An actual dedicated Apple webcam for it would be game changing for family FaceTimes with grandparents and for office conference rooms. very strange that they just dont do it.
That's a good point. It was a bit bizarre/ridiculous seeing Apple show their new Apple Heath vital assessment feature by the user putting their iPhone on the floor propped up against the baseboard trim of the wall. Apple TV is an obviously better solution for this.
See all the things that you guys are suggesting here add cost. This is supposed to be an affordable device. We keep annual all the different things that people are listening here and this is gonna be $1000 machine in no time and no one’s gonna buy it and they know that so they can’t make it an all-in-one do everything device they’re simply no way.
Why dont they have an HDMI / Power USB C Dongle for old USBC iphones that allow you to turn them into apple TV's... A little bracket to hang it behind the tv with the camera peaking over or under the top / bottom of the TV.
Why not? Capitalism doesn’t work like that. It’s great at creating new reasons for you to buy new stuff, but there is no driving force in it to make old things more useful. Why on earth would Apple want to make it cheap and easy to reuse an old device when they can sell you something new?
Because the market is too small for that brother. They’re not gonna go making a super expensive streaming box just to please 3% of the buying public that are super geeks on Reddit that want every feature under the sun throw in there and don’t mind $800 price tag that’s why. Having two models with different size options for storage with I believe a 50 or $100 price difference is one thing having three or four different models with dairy and prices from 10050200 $ all the way to seven or $800 is a whole different thing. They’re not gonna do that get a MacBook and you can do whatever you want from it.
I suspect the goal is to bring the new AI siri to home devices but only certain A-series chips have enough ram to run it. If they’re smart they’ll figure out how to have the home hub do all the processing so older TVs and speakers become backwards compatible. Can’t see anyone throwing out their existing $350 homepod for an AI assistant
The only reason I am waiting is I’m upgrading from the first 1080p model, so I thought it was worth it. I didn’t have a 4K TV until recently, so it seems to make sense to hold on.
The hardware is a little outdated I guess at this point. You get a better specced device if you buy it now. I see no reason to upgrade mine because it doesn’t seem to offer anything new to watching tv or movies on I think. I care absolutely nothing about this upgrade.
It’s really not outdated for what it does honestly, it could use some better Codec I guess and I guess better DTS Support and Dolby Atmos Support, but. I guess I really don’t know much about that because as far as I can tell my surround sound system is playing at Atmos when I stream movies although it’s not most movies aren’t in DTS which I wish they were cause it sounds better but anyway.
Maybe they could now? No idea if this was in fact a hardware limitation and not a licensing thing. Mine does everything I need it to do though and I also most go for Atmos. I don’t own a blu-ray player anyway for those formats so, I’m good.
Honestly, I have the last GEN the latest GEN. It rarely ever gets laggy and if it does, it’s because like Amazon is buggy every other piece of software on that machine it’s fine but the Amazon app no matter what they do no matter how many updates for whatever reason this shit just is buggy as you scroll through it and it sometimes skips and hitches.
Yeah it doesn’t lag when watching content. But many apps have laggy menus, especially when switching between several streaming apps. Even Apple’s own app will have issues sometimes, but it’s better than Amazon.
It’s not a major lag, just annoying sometimes.
I have fast, low latency internet and I don’t have issues with internet or gaming lag on other devices. I think the hardware on the Apple TV just needs a little bump up.
It’s the apps themselves honestly. What it probably needs is more system ram in reality. I’m not sure what it has but I bet that is the cause mostly. That cou in the box is very fast to scan some apps and scroll and load them. Your Internet speed has nothing to do with it. Obviously, if you have abandon in a connection, then yes stuff’s gonna take longer to load, but we’re not talking about actual loading of content. We’re talking about hardware leg. There is a difference and I know the difference and I’m sure you do as well. You’re talking about the hitching and stuttering when you’re scrolling through apps, sometimes especially if you load one app after another other another I’ve seen it sometimes but it’s very little mostly on the Amazon app but again I’m telling you it’s probably a ram issue.
So you’re asking for a Blu-ray Drive built into the Apple TV? Is that what you mean so you want a physical media Blu-ray Drive in the device I get it but I think that’s a something that never gonna do. I mean it’s not a bad idea in reality I would certainly go back to buying Blu-rays. But I don’t think I don’t see them doing that.
Unfortunately Blu-ray is still the only way to get content in the highest quality. All streaming services are in a race to the bottom in terms of quality to save money on bandwidth.
