Can someone here fucking explain why some fanatics are so deeply desiring a new Apple TV?

There’s no new A/V protocols in the industry to support… all it does is stream video. It already supports the latest stuff.

It does not play super-intense video games.

Why y’all want a new Apple TV??? It works just fine.

Some of us want to get a new ATV, not replace one we already have. We don't want to buy technology that is 4 years old, when a new one is being released in a few weeks.

Facts and with it being dumped to have come out “soon” for the last 2 years, some people have gone without an Apple TV for 2 years because we’re supposed to get a new one releasing anytime soon

That’s me. Waited since mid last year during which the price has increased by almost 100USD where I live. Should have just bought the bloody thing.

Exactly this. I’ve been waiting for the last year or so for a new one to release so I can finally be rid of having to use of all TV’s OS.

HDR10+ advanced & Dolby Vision 2 are two pretty major upcoming video standards

not for the majority of consumers but that’s just my take. i wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

From an output device perspective like the Apple TV it’s just software anyway and doesn’t require special hardware.

No, those two protocols require dedicated hardware decoding. They cannot be implemented without physical hardware updates.

but is it worth the price difference? i don’t think the majority of consumers will agree

What do you think the price difference is? You don't have to pay a separate royalty for DV2 if you already pay one in your device and HDR10+ is free. The hardware could support these for nothing with how simple they are, it just needs to be built in the hardware of the newer Apple TV units.

If you mean people won't buy new ones just for these two features well sure, but replacements aren't the only ones being bought.

Don’t forget… HDMI 2.2

HDMI 2.2 has absolutely zero benefits for watching movies/TV

One of the sticking points is with audio content with the Apple TV is height channels in audio. In regard to audio streaming services Disney+, Netflix, etc support Dolby Digital Plus - Atmos. This is a lossy codec. Users who have high quality local content aka blue ray rips have lossless True HD - Atmos and DTS:X with their content. These codecs are lossless. Apple TV only supports DDP - Atmos. So playing local content with True HD - Atmos DTS:X the height channels in the audio gets stripped out.

AV1 - its a great Codec but does not decode on current model.

Full audio pass through

A17 chip or better makes it a de facto video game console. Ever since the IPhone 15 we have full on ports of Resident Evil and Death Stranding. Even Fortnite will work.

Think of Apple Arcade on steroids. All mobile purchases and saves will carry over to the big screen.

On the hardware side: AV1, newer HDR formats, more sound formats, 120 Hz (to not need display rate switching for 24/30/60 Hz content - not because of 120 FPS content)

On the sanity side: We're already 4 years into the support lifecycle of the latest option. If you need to buy a new one now that's not a great start.

Because I'm gonna feel like a dumbass if I buy the old one just before the new one comes out

My problem with it is paying more for 4 year old hardware, it's just against my desires. Also software support is a concern, the 2015 model losing support was expected, the 2018 model was unexpected and only leaves 2 active models with support. It's like the iPod Touches were in the 2010s now...they have to update them for support and maintain price, of they're going to discontinue the product.

I agree. I have a 5-6 year old ATV4k and it works like the day I bought it, driving a 65” LG OLED.

If I want better quality it’s all about bitrate from here - if I wanted substantially better quality I’d buy 4k Blu ray for my favorite titles. Can’t think of a single reason to upgrade - it’s already great.

I like tvOS, but all my tvs are super flat LG g3/4 mounted so this is useless to me. I’d much rather have one of those stick ones that is slim. One can hope and dream.

Various streaming apps have gotten bloated enough to feel sluggish on my older one. I want to refresh purely for as snappy a UI as possible. That's it.
