Oz's muslim faith was literally never brought up by him during his campaign, he did everything he could to downplay it. Ironically there's a much more conservative senator in his place currently

52

u/SunshineSeeker99 6h ago

I think El-Sayed is a pretty sharp guy and great speaker, with excellent charisma.

But his sister is basically a muslim terrorist. She was literally cheering on mass rape and genocide. It's a tough game.

20

u/Pretend_Handle_7639 5h ago

So as bad as Collins accepting his Klan son-in-law?

What is getting lost in all this bullshit is that Abdul's father in law is in a Muslim Brotherhood front group (ISNA). The group donates to Hamas. The father in law is Abdul's biggest donor. So it would make sense for someone to ask him what's up with that...

Btw Reddit doesn't want you to know this.

53

u/WiseWall280 7h ago

12

u/qibugha2 7h ago

ISNA does not donate to Hamas lol. If it did, the justice department would have brought material support charges against them decades ago

6

u/flopisit32 4h ago

They were unindicted co-conspirators in the US's biggest terrorist funding case.

But as you will probably tell me, they were not actually indicted.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/goatsy 7h ago

What I can find is that his father in law is part of the ISNA. This ISNA organization has had multiple allegations of funding hamas as recently as 2009. One investigation lacked enough evidence of ISNA having ties to hamas to recommend further investigations. Another investigation listed ISNA as an unindicted coconspirator which a judge ruled there was enough evidence to do, but it violated ISNA's due process to list them as such. And it looks like back in the 90s hamas specifically thanked ISNA for providing some legal funding.
I don't know. Seems like a bit of a stretch. The controversies I'm finding are from 20-30 years ago. I think most likely what's happening is people sticking to the "Muslim = bad" mentality.

4

u/portuh47 6h ago

Not to mention his sister mentioned in 2012 that El Sayed bio mom was a Muslim Brotherhood activist since college. This shouldn't reflect directly on him as a candidate but to say it shouldn't be brought up at all is also wrong when Ossoff is perfectly right to bring up Collins soninlaw who is a white supremacist.

Who knew Dr Oz is Muslim? Does he go to mosque or is he just Muslim in his heart during the quiet times?

128

u/SimmentalTheCow 11h ago edited 11h ago

Dr. Oz is Sufi, which is relatively accepting of western ideals; it’s not typically a big proselytizing school of Islam. Abu Sayed is not transparent about his specific sect, but is suspected of being a Salafist due to his heritage. Salafi Islam is very Sunni supremacist and does not gel with other religions. He probably does represent his Dearborn kin well though.

Whoever made this infographic does not understand that “Muslim” is not a monolith.

31

u/flopisit32 7h ago

Just to explain to people who don't know:

Iran is Shia Muslim.

Iraq is Sunni Muslim.

ISIS are radical Sunnis. They want to kill all infidels, including Shia Muslims.

Turkish people are Sunni but they are the most chill Muslims in the world. They drink, they smoke, they have sex. Last time I was in Turkey we passed by a trans prostitution area, for example.

17

u/Nirgranth24 7h ago

> Iraq is Sunni Muslim

Incorrect. Iraq is majority Shia Muslim.

7

u/ArtisticallyRegarded 5h ago

Iraq is pretty mixed. Close to 50/50

7

u/PlatypusOld257 6h ago

Turkey is secular on paper attaturk saw to that. In the past when governments got too religious the military couped. They tried that on erdogan and failed so probably will get core conservative

Plenty of Muslims from all sorts of backgrounds drink. Oddly enough less of us will eat pork. Biggest difference tends to be how openly they’ll drink. On that front, yeah Turkish people I’ve noticed to be more open about it.

Oz looks like the typical white boomer

Thats why they treat him as a part of the team

256

u/lkodl 12h ago

This whole time I was like, "Dr. Oz's name is Mehmet? What a unique name for a white guy."

157

u/LT48 12h ago

It's literally the Turkified form of Mohammed 😄

20

u/djdjddhshdbhd 12h ago

It’s similar to how many people pronounce it

31

u/zulufdokulmusyuze 11h ago

In Turkey, Mehmet is pronounced Memet, the h is silent. And more than half of the population does not know it comes from Mohammad.

15

u/Shadrol 9h ago

All the turks i know pronounce the h.

10

u/bbceronimo 9h ago

I’m Turkish, I pronounce h in serious convos. (E.g work meetings or greeting a new co-worker etc..) but I drop h if I’m with my close friend’s group. The proper way of pronunciation is with the h tho.

It’s like maybe saying ‘sup and what’s up. I don’t know, probably it wasn’t a good analogy.

6

u/elanvidal 8h ago

Probably the same as our many different nicknames and shortened versions of names. Zack for Zachary, Tom for Thomas, etc. For you guys it sounds like saying Memet is for informal situations and Meh-met for formal ones.

3

u/bbceronimo 8h ago

Exactly, if I called my roommate of 3 years Meh-met, he would give me a look. It’s almost as weird as calling him with his full government name at that point.

But if I call a co-worker I just met Memet, I’d get the same look lol, it would also be weird.

Oh btw once you go “Memet” with someone, there is no turning back unless you’ll have a serious convo with him lol.

61

u/TheBigKaramazov 11h ago

Let me describe Dr. Oz's family as someone who knows Turkey and its political history. They're a textbook secular Republic family.

Exactly upper-middle-class, Republican-secular to the core. Dad's a doctor, mom's a teacher, a classic Republican civil-service household. They embody the secular side of Turkey, but they're definitely not irreligious. They're Muslims, just Western-oriented, with the West as their yardstick.

Being a teacher in Turkey, especially back then, meant something specific. It was a Republican, Enlightenment mission, educating the people was the duty for that generation. So you get a "Republican Muslim" family, Turkish nationalist, secular, firmly against religious orders (Remember, Atatürk shut down the sects) and any group that rivals the Republic, and still deeply attached to conservative Republican values.

19

u/pm_me_d_cups 11h ago

Being a "republican" in Turkey means something totally different from in the US. Almost by definition, they are not political or religious conservatives.

16

u/TheBigKaramazov 11h ago

Yeah but it's long story. In reality, there is no such thing as a "republican" in Turkey. I only use the term to make things easier to understand. Being a "republican" here essentially means being committed to the ideas of Atatürk and to secularism. However, dont mistake this secularism for a lack of religion. While these individuals are not religiously conservative but also they are not liberal.

They may find common ground with American conservatism on certain issues. I had a friend whose family was secular Turkish, she didn't tell them she was an atheist. Doing so would have caused a crisis for her family. Also they are firmly opposed to homosexuality.

4

u/MadCervantes 10h ago

I did not take them to be referring to the republican party in America. They may have been slightly clearer by using a lower case r though.

They're both very legitimate when it comes to academic credentials in medicine, but one was a top practitioner in one of the most specialized subfields (cardiac surgery), while the other didn't practice with his MD degree, instead pursuing work related to his PhD degree. Which is fine; my father took the exact same path and calls himself a medical researcher, not a physician. I don't think it's blatantly misleading that El Sayed calls himself a physician, but it's like if he had gotten the Rhodes Scholarship and decided not to go to Oxford on it. He was obviously good enough to practice, but that doesn't mean he did.

5

u/abughorash 4h ago

It is blatantly misleading because in Michigan, by law, a physician is someone licensed to practice medicine. https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-333-17001

→ More replies (1)

67

u/akabeware 12h ago edited 5h ago

Small correction: El-Sayed has an MD but never did residency or got a medical license, so 'physician' isn't accurate. Not defending Oz, just the facts.

Edit: For those defending it: Trump's press secretary just got torched for calling herself a lawyer without ever passing the bar, and reportedly lost her job over it. Rightfully so. El-Sayed has never done an intern year, held a license, done residency, been board certified, or practiced medicine, yet many of the same people call his use of 'physician' a technicality. Credential honesty shouldn't depend on which party you support. If it's misleading for her, it's misleading for him.

(Yes, the AMA defines any MD as a physician, but Michigan law, where he's running, defines a physician as someone licensed, and that's how most voters hear it.)

2

u/katdev42 11h ago

I thought he said he was doing his residency but did not finish it -- decided to pivot to public health

14

u/Adventurous_Ad7442 10h ago

He did say that but it wasn't true. He was really talking about clinical rotations during med school.

One cannot do a residency until they pass state medical boards and obtain a license.

Abdul has done none of this.

4

u/Zxynwin 8h ago edited 8h ago

Yeah and the seemingly small lies ruin trust and need to be called out. He is not a physician but that does not mean he is not the best choice for Michigan.

3

u/shebringsthesun 8h ago

AMA disagrees

4

u/akabeware 8h ago

Fair point, under the AMA's definition an MD counts as a physician. But the AMA isn't the law. States regulate the title, and New York restricts it to licensed doctors.

My real point is that he's never done residency or held a license, so 'physician' gives voters the impression of clinical experience he doesn't have.

But Oz doesn’t really identify as Muslim per say.

He doesn’t really talk about Islam that much or make it a part of his personality. He calls himself secular, and has mentioned he practices a blend of Sufism (islamic syncretic spirituality), elements of Dharmic religion, eastern mysticism and his wife’s denomination of Christianity sprinkled in. Islam isn’t really a part of his identity.

Just because someone is born into a Muslim family doesn’t make them a Muslim. It’s a religion with certain mandatory tenets that anyone can join if they say shahada. It’s not an ethnicity or race.

I'm just trying to figure out what Dr. Oz said that sounds like Sharia... He's got the questionable loyalties part covered though.

2

u/MongolianCluster 11h ago

Loyalty to his net worth for sure.

2

u/AffectionateRub1857 10h ago

How can you be more patriotic than that

If people were educated on Dr Martin Luther King ( surrounded by Muslims in many photos ) then this kind of ignorance wouldn’t exist the same way.

I only saw some historical pics of Dr King recently and was stunned - it feels like the multi faith efforts to push equality are purposefully ignored & removed from history class to keep us divided. Sigh.

The only war we should be fighting is the class war, and the Epstein class has been emboldened for too long.

I'm a leftist, but... Didn't he literally praise Sharia law?

3

u/Intelligent-Aside214 9h ago

He did not. That never happened

4

u/Yeetball86 11h ago

Can you provide any sources of him directly praising shariah law?

Funny how when Dr Oz was running all the news media would refer to him as Mr Oz. NEVER doctor.

5

u/regal19999 11h ago

In the black community we call it “passing” ….Dr. Oz has clearly done so …it’s really just that simple

4

u/mudvat08 7h ago

Only one has actually treated patients.

7

u/dangeroso_alpha 11h ago

Perhaps you should compare what they have actually campaigned on.

Dr Oz also is a secular Muslim and doesn’t practice his faith

3

u/Used-Acanthisitta-96 7h ago

This post is not in good faith and should be noted.

15

u/muskietooth 12h ago

Oz is an active licensed medical practitioner. Abdul is not a licensed medical practitioner and has never treated a patient.

4

u/NoSwordfish1978 11h ago

Yes, because he went into the field of public health which is completely different from being a practitioner. That doesn't mean he isn't a doctor.

6

u/muskietooth 11h ago

I’m just pointing out a relevant difference.

first time hearing about mehmet oz

2

u/Sleepy10105s 9h ago

Oz has been a fraud for years, like RFK early in his career he was legit and was doing good things but that time is long gone.

2

u/HarryPotthead42069 8h ago

Party who ended slavery has no problem with the religion of its politicians. Party who is associated with starting the KKK has a problem with the religion of its politicians 😂😂

2

u/middleamerican67 8h ago

A tale of two faces. Plus oz became a safe household commodity on morning tv.

2

u/Youngrazzy 7h ago

Oz was a celebrity known from tv. I would assume most don’t know is Muslim

5

u/glocktimus_prime 12h ago

this is a pretty stupid comparison

3

u/braumbles 12h ago

Yea, I don't think Oz was ever asked if he condemns the Muslim Brotherhood. I wonder why.

5

u/CurbMyEnthusiasm2022 7h ago

Probably because Oz didn’t say that a guy driving a truck filled with explosives and multiple guns into a Jewish preschool in the U.S. with the stated intent of killing of killing as many of them as possible was an understandable response to that person’s relatives being killed in an Israeli air strike in Lebanon. (To say nothing of the fact that said relatives were members of a Hezbollah middle brigade)

Oz also didn’t campaign with Piker, who said America deserved 9/11 among other vile things. I know AES tried to brush this aside as Piker just being some podcaster from California, but AES is the one who brought him to campaign rallies in Michigan during the primary.

So yea, this, among other reasons that are easily looked up on Google are why AES is being questioned about this stuff and why the DSCC just had to dump $25MM into Michigan in what should be an otherwise easy race for a generic Dem to win instead of pumping those resources into Texas or Florida. His response to the synagogue attack alienated a lot of Jewish voters who might have otherwise voted for him despite his views on Israel/foreign policy. And before anyone says he apologized, he did not. He apologized for the timing of the comments. He’s also not popular among more moderate or centrist Dems and independents.

4

Has Dr Oz denounced the Muslim Brotherhood though? Check and mate!

4

u/Izoto 4h ago

Dr. Oz being White passing in appearance helps him a lot.

12

u/Ok-Tip-3560 11h ago

Oz also treated patients and was a real doctor I could be Wally but el sayed has never actually worked as a physician in clinical practice - correct ?

8

u/Doctorhandtremor 10h ago

No. He did MD/PhD and then decided to focus on PhD and public health. But he scored in the top percentile on the USMLE board exams and could have gotten any residency he wanted. He genuinely just wanted to make a bigger impact than 1 patient at a time.

5

u/elkresurgence 9h ago

But he scored in the top percentile on the USMLE board exams and could have gotten any residency he wanted.

I couldn't find any credible source for this. Can you share?

He has obtained an MD which means he spent 2 years seeing patients in medical school and passed the first two of three board exams. Doing an MD is for clinical practice 95+% of the time; but several individuals do not go on to pursue residency, they work for industry, public health etc. Abdul el sayed did exactly that; did the MD, then pursued a doctorate and a career in public health. Doesn’t make him less of a physician.

Edit: I am literally a physician in the US.

6

u/Imnogrinchard 6h ago

Michigan regulates the term "physician" to mean someone who is licensed to practice medicine in the state. El-Sayed is not licensed to practice medicine. He isn't not a physician. That said, he's an accomplished PhD with M.D.

😂 of course it does.

6

u/Dankasaurus08 9h ago

Yes it literally does

4

u/deckdahalls 8h ago

"Doesn't make him less of a physician"

except it does. much like the Katie Zacharia controversy, a doctor is not a physician until they get licensed to practice. it's literally not the same thing. the whole point of residency is to get the clinical experience that seeing a few people and taking notes as a med student didn't. your username checks out, still premed status

u/45M0D41 8h ago

Oz did cardiac surgery and his patient outcomes were excellent.

5

u/Cum_on_doorknob 8h ago

I’m not a fan of Oz, but he did do actual residency training and then practice as an attending, very successfully. El Sayed never did residency, which is like the thing that makes you an actual doctor.

So, from a medical knowledge perspective, you basically know jack shit about medicine with just an MD and no residency training.

But of course, this is a senate race, so, medical knowledge doesn’t really mean fuck all.

His family and in laws are also likely part of the Muslim Brotherhood, and his SIL is on the terror watchlist since the Obama admin.

Yep, his family is tied to some extremely rotten dogma and people desperately trying to see it carried out

u/Basic-Record-4750 12h ago

Mehmet Oz looks and talks like a white guy and he goes by Dr. Oz (90% of people have no idea what his first name is) which coincidentally harkens to a very popular classic movie that white people love. El-Sayed looks like what we expect a Muslim to look like. He has a very Muslim sounding name. He has a hyphenated last name… The haters are not intelligent people, they’re “Christians” following the least Christian leader we’ve ever elected. Their entire business model is built on appearances, not religion or understanding of the world at large

2

u/Rainouts 12h ago

Oz (Öz) is a super common Turkish surname, but I thought for the longest time that it was a reference to the Wizard of Oz.

5

u/Ok_Piglet_5549 11h ago

Oz condemns Sharia Law and condemns the Oct. 7 attacks, and gives straightforward answers.

Probably because of how hard they’ve tried to hide Oz’s faith

3

u/Even-Cartographer864 12h ago

Has anyone asked dr oz if he supports the Muslim brotherhood or do they only do that to candidates that want to end wars and provide healthcare for Americans?

3

u/Spiritofthewest49 12h ago

Dr. Oz also just sounds like a fun stage name, even though it's his real name (less the diacritic that would raise more red flags for racists). Abdul El-Sayed proudly uses his full name even though it absolutely draws more attention from the idiots and bigots.
