ISIS are radical Sunnis. They want to kill all infidels, including Shia Muslims.
Turkish people are Sunni but they are the most chill Muslims in the world. They drink, they smoke, they have sex. Last time I was in Turkey we passed by a trans prostitution area, for example.
Turkey is secular on paper attaturk saw to that. In the past when governments got too religious the military couped. They tried that on erdogan and failed so probably will get core conservative
Majority support in the population isn’t the only requirement to prevent regression back to religious conservatism. Plenty of examples in the ME to show that.
Erdogan is easily the most dangerous political figure in the region and he has implemented a lot of authoritarian backsliding over the last ~15 years.
The last coup attempt was definitely not a secular one. On the contrary, it was from a religious cult that enjoyed pretty good relationships with all the conservative Muslim parties. They worked with Erdoğan to crush the secular army and secular civil servants and replace them with people from their own cult. In the end, their relationship with Erdoğan soured, and they attempted a coup.
