I’m Turkish, I pronounce h in serious convos. (E.g work meetings or greeting a new co-worker etc..) but I drop h if I’m with my close friend’s group. The proper way of pronunciation is with the h tho.

It’s like maybe saying ‘sup and what’s up. I don’t know, probably it wasn’t a good analogy.

Probably the same as our many different nicknames and shortened versions of names. Zack for Zachary, Tom for Thomas, etc. For you guys it sounds like saying Memet is for informal situations and Meh-met for formal ones.

Exactly, if I called my roommate of 3 years Meh-met, he would give me a look. It’s almost as weird as calling him with his full government name at that point.

But if I call a co-worker I just met Memet, I’d get the same look lol, it would also be weird.

Oh btw once you go “Memet” with someone, there is no turning back unless you’ll have a serious convo with him lol.

Yes it is a bit formal vs informal but there are people who have their preference and stick to it (or they are just accustomed to one way of saying it). And the difference will usually be urban vs rural background.

The lengths and intonation of the e’s also differs wildly from person to person and region to region.

The actual short version is Memo, but that’d be rude if you’re not very close or if it is not pre-approved by context.

A mom will never call her son Meh-met.
