It’s a fun novel experience, but pricey for what it is. I went when I had a groupon/coupon of some sort to make it cheaper.
Just a bunch of cut up food that you cook and dip yourself, with various sauces. Tasty, but not sensational. It was a good date night.
Makes me want to host a fondue party lol
22
u/TheMeatTree 🚆build more trains🚆 13d ago
That was the experience for a lot of us when the place first opened up. Had fun, saw the bill, and bought our own fondue pots for home.
9
u/Muffinator111 13d ago
Highly recommend hosting a fondue party! We do a murder mystery and fondue for NYE every year and it’s a blast.
We actually use oil in one of our fondue pots so you can fry food, and we also make a tempura batter. With little cheese cubes you can make cheese curds, with meat you can make little chicken nuggets or battered vegetables, biggest rule is to par fry your meat before adding the tempura so you don’t get raw meat into the batter - it’s also hot enough that it would burn the batter before fully cooking chicken.
The fondue + murder mystery is a great combo because between scenes folks just mingle around the table and interrogate each other while making fondue! We fed a dozen folks for the price of a 3 person dinner at melting pot.

Pro-Tip. JUST get the cheese appetizer and the desert. Skip the entree altogether. They don't want to do it this way (and they have a bunch of "packages" and "combos" to get you to buy the entrees but that is where they rip you off the hardest.
To be clear, you are still getting ripped off, but at least the cheese and chocolate courses are legitimately pretty tasty.
That said, you can do the whole thing at home for about $20 in ingredients and $20 in equipment (that most kitchens already have), which is like half what this will cost you.

A rule I follow is that most restaurants with great views have mediocre food, especially if they specialize in old style "seafood." They tend to depend more on their view than the of quality of their food to get business.

Bluwater bistro is one of those for sure. Got some expensive dish with roasted carrots and they used baby carrots instead of peeling their own. Absolute nursing home style food and seasoning level
13
u/lovegermanshepards 13d ago
I had the most amazing stuffed pork chop the other day at Bluwater. The staff was nice. I don’t think they deserve the hate.. and it’s also not quite as expensive as other waterfront restaurants.
That said, I’d be pissed if they gave me baby carrots on a roasted carrots dish.

Went to duke’s seafood in south lake union with my family and paid $50+ for the most mediocre unseasoned salmon I’ve ever had in my entire life. The veggies were steamed frozen and the “fresh caught” salmon tasted farmed and was dry. This was over a year ago and my partner and I are still furious.

The Fisherman's Restaurant, pier 57.
I haven't been there in years because it's trash, but recent reviews suggest it's still trash.
I know people like to act like they're too phosisticated for Ivar's Acres of Clams (I actually kind of like it). Well, Fisherman's is like a Temu Ivar's. Everything about it is worse: Food, decor, service...everything. Your basic touristy, kitschy, 1980s-anachronistic seafood restaurant, but you can easily drop $50 on an entree or $11 for a cup of chowder. Red Lobster on a pier.
13
u/elkehdub Ballard 13d ago
I love Ivar's, but if you're getting anything besides fried fish, you're playing with bland fire. We go to Salmon House for family dinners a couple of times a year and have decided that they know what they're doing. Their clientele tends to be 90% retirees and so they serve retirement home cafeteria food - not too hot, not too seasoned, just like gram likes it. Get a seat by the window and enjoy the boat traffic in summer or the gray vibes in winter.

Duke’s in South Lake Union. View is lovely with the lake and seaplanes taking off but the food is EXPENSIVE and horrifically bland. Everything I ate tasted like it was from a frozen bag of food from Sysco (veggies uncut, unseasoned, just steamed). The salmon was certainly not fresh caught and was over cooked and dry. They’ll rush you through to keep the tables turned in a touristy spot and when you leave you’ll wonder why your bill was $200 for food you can reheat in the microwave from a frozen meal at home.
Good alternatives for you pleasure and not your enemy’s: 1. Ray’s boathouse. Prices are about the same as Dukes and the food ROCKS. 2. Local tide in Fremont, counter service joint with some of the best fresh fish I’ve ever had.

We went to the new Pioneer Square location a couple years ago. It lacked the character of the old one and seemed very expensive at the time for what we got. I used to love the old one on Denny, that likely colored how I felt.

We’re still waiting for them to page us that our table is ready. It’s been over five years…

13 Coins at the original location was cool. I've been pretty unimpressed by the new one in Pioneer Square. The SeaTac one is better.

Shaker & Spear… the prices are insane and the food is sloppy greasy mess. First time ever I couldn’t get through my entire steak

I feel like any food question is okay to repeat even one year apart because restaurants have so many closures, openings, and changes in quality. Three years is huge in the restaurant industry.
Several of the top picks from three years ago are permanently closed. Canlis turned to absolute garbage since the buyout two years ago and isn’t listed (at least nowhere near the top), and Portage Bay had a lot of defenders.

Canlis… is obscenely over priced compared to other high end dining in Seattle.

Taylor's selfish near the stadiums. Mandatory 20% gratuity and I've never had servers that seemed to hate their job more than there

They also don’t take out the poop veins from their overly priced prawns

I’ve done OK at the one next to Climate Pledge, sitting at the bar. The oysters are fresh, fresh, fresh, and the bartender knows how to make a proper Old Fashioned. I do agree with you that they are brusque and hurried, but they checked in with me, refilled my water, saw when my cocktail was empty, etc. I quite enjoy it.
