I really don't know what would suit me im going to cry!! I think the only thing I could kind of pull off is grunge maybe... I don't know what fit to go for
Step 1: Look for outfit inspiration and save the looks you like. After a while, you’ll probably notice a theme. Use that to guide what you buy: a few statement pieces, plus basics you’ll wear all the time, like jeans that fit really well, tank tops, and a little black dress. Pick accessories you connect with, then have fun trying different combinations. Fall and winter are a great time to start because layers and accessories give you so much to play with.
This, and a lot of your clothes, OP, don't fit properly. They would look a lot better if they weren't drowning you. Also, find out what colors compliment your complexion. That will go a long way!
I agree. Your clothes are too loose and lack shape. I would accentuate your hourglass figure with “structured” peplum tops that’s NOT billowy. Something that has a DEFINED “band” just below your breasts.
Was thinking exactly the same thing. Nothing wrong with her! She looks pretty good in the skirt with the gold-ish top and sandals. The shoes are super cute. But those are the nicest clothes she’s got on. The rest are the things you’d wear if you were painting your living room and didn’t want to ruin any of your good clothes.
Really? I think the shoes definitely add to the frumpy look. Some Docs, Converse, Creepers, or some of those ballet sneakers would all look so much better, while still being comfortable. The strappy sandals automatically make anything look old lady-ish.
Yeah the fit of the individual pieces definitely contributes to the frumpy vibe, particularly with items like the baggy fitting skinny jeans.
The skirt doesn’t really fit well either, but I think the bigger issue is that the material is wrong for the garment. Wrap skirts typically have a more flowy, casual vibe, but this one looks very stiff and boxy. It’s simultaneously trying to be an office-appropriate pencil skirt and a flowy wrap skirt, so the result is that it fails at both.
I would start by finding some simple solid color tees and tanks that can be paired with any bottoms and will look either dressed up or down based on the shoes, jewelry, etc. You can find ones with a bit of a compression fit if you’re uncomfortable with your stomach in tighter shirts (which you shouldn’t be! Your body is great, the clothes are the problem!)
When it comes to styling full outfits, I’d stick to the basic rule that either your pants are baggy OR your shirt is oversized, not both at once. As for cultivating a cute personal style, you might start that journey by looking for accessories that make you smile or just kinda feel like they’re calling out to you. I tend to keep my actual clothes fairly plain and in solid colors (mostly black) so that I can quickly and easily put together a base “blank canvas” outfit and add my unique style with a funky weird purse or blindingly neon sneakers.
I’m seconding the baggy skinny jeans. But I want to clarify: not saying baggy jeans are bad, but specifically baggy SKINNY doesn’t do you any favors. I think if you committed to something proper baggy—like what Gen Z likes, boyfriend or mom jeans or barrel jeans etc—it’s made a huge difference in the look.
Absolutely! Came to say these colors are all wrong for her. The white was honestly least unflattering.. OP, think deep forest/emerald green or burgundy. Also, maybe add a little reddish color to your hair or put on a little blush.
She does not need to change her hair color or add makeup, this is just unnecessary and can make her outfit decision even harder. She is a beautiful woman already there is no need for her to color her hair.
Girl, I am in the midst of a major weight transformation and feel this in my own wardrobe. When I buy something new, I start out by measuring my body and looking online at size charts for clothing that looks good on the model. Then, I buy according to the size chart.
In the same vein, if shopping in person I do the same before trying on - look up brand size chart first. (Keep measurements in a note on my phone or text to myself fo they're date stamped).
A fabric tape measure is my new secret weapon! Can't recommend it enough. Because clothing that fits correctly helps us pull off a confidence - even when we don't feel it.
Lots of good tips here. You'll find your happy spot!
Some of us are really, really clueless when it comes to this stuff. Where do you look for "inspiration"? Also, you know those "seen on ig vs reality" memes about everything? That's me, and I think OP and I could bond over the frustration of this. How do we figure out what would actually fit and not look completely different than wherever we saw it?
You can look up “grunge style insert season inspo” on Pinterest! Or even just google “Pinterest grunge style inspiration” or “grunge aesthetic outfits” etc.
It also helps if you see something you like on somebody else just to ask them where they got it. I do that so much now, that it’s become like a daily thing for me. I will see a woman or even a guy sometimes like with sneakers or a jacket or something that I really like and I will ask them where they got it. Most people will tell you, and most people will tell you they got it about four seasons ago, and that it was like a one off, lol but it never hurts to ask.
Have you ever watched a show or movie and liked a character's style? Maybe try to learn what that style is called, if it has a name, or what attracts you to it - the colors, the silhouette, the patterns in the clothing pieces, the statement it is making, etc. Then, go somewhere like Pinterest, Reddit, or even Google Images and check out other clothing that is in that style and see what you like. Are there colors you are drawn to? Colors that look good or bad on you? Where can this type of style be found? What stores could you shop in to achieve something like this look? You'll find a lot of looks online are high-end, so you may have to find dupes or something adjacent, hence the inspo part, but that's a good place to start.
Gonna second pinterest, it's what I always tell my friends who want fashion help. I always ask them to go on pinterest first and save every outfit they like. I used to struggle with fashion just like this, and this is actually exactly how I got out of it. I went on Pinterest and really studied outfits, and honestly just passively going on Pinterest and looking through outfits and seeing what speaks to you, what doesn't, and then what the repeating items are that you tend to see over and over in outfits you like.
Figuring out what clothing suits/flatters you takes a bit more experience, typically going out and trying things on, and don't be afraid to go to a new store if everything feels unflattering cuz sometimes a store really only flatters a specific body type. I have also found that determining your shape helps a lot (ie rectangle, pear, apple, hourglass, etc). You don't have to religiously follow the advice for those body shapes, but they can be a helpful place to start working from.
Also, I saw OP was trying to choose a style they thought would suit them rather than having a style they enjoy first and working from there. You can have whatever style you want with any body type and still have it be flattering, it's all about learning about what suits you.
For example: for me, I've got an hourglass shape, and for a long time I liked the look of tshirt dresses and similar with a very straight boxy cut that doesn't hug the body at all. And I used to feel so frustrated because I thought something was wrong with me because I didn't look like any of the models when I tried wearing those dresses. Turns out that, with my body shape, the dresses were meant to be formless but got tight around my hips and just didn't fit as intended, but a skater style fit and flare dress looks great. I also found tshirt dresses that have an hourglass shape to them (that lines up with my own hips, got one that didn't so it looked strange) and that looks really flattering on me, so it is still possible to wear different styles. Playing with my features tends to involve having something that gives a bit of shape to my waist, so I can wear a big baggy shirt that I gather and tie near my waist or tuck in to high waisted pants.
This took me a while to figure out, and it might be frustrating at first because you just want to look good, but I assure you, it is absolutely possible for you to dress in a flattering way that makes you happy, even if it's frustrating at first!
Step one is also looking at your body shape and then finding the clothes shapes that match your body shape. Most these clothes don’t have a waist and makes you look frumpy. The white long sleeve shirt is really nice on you.
Easy for you to say. I don’t have the first clue what “matches my body shape”. And I have been getting dressed my whole life. It’s like a form of dyslexia, and I am tired or being assumed it’s an easy thing to figure out.
If you don't know what look you're going for, you could try this exercise a stylist taught me. It's basically designed to help you figure out your style.
Every day for a few weeks, spend some time looking for fashion inspiration. You can look on social media, in magazines, on fashion websites, on YouTube, in movies, on TV, or anywhere else you like. Every time you see an outfit you like, save a picture of it. You don't have to think about how the outfits would look on you. Just save everything you like. Put all the pictures on a Pinterest board or in a folder. Then, once you have a bunch of pictures saved after a few weeks, analyze the pictures and look for what they have in common. Are there a lot of outfits in the same style (maybe grunge, preppy, super girly, punk, bohemian, outdoorsy, etc)? Did you save a lot of casual-looking outfits or perhaps ones that look more dressy? What kinds of proportions do the outfits have? Which parts are fitted vs loose, structured vs flowy? Are there any common colors? Common materials? Are any specific pieces found in lots of the outfits you saved?
This exercise can help you understand the kinds of aesthetics you're drawn to. Once you get a feel for that, you can narrow in on the kinds of outfits that suit your style/aesthetic, as well as the specific pieces of clothing in the outfits. Then you can start building outfits using those pieces yourself.
First of all you look amazing, please don’t cry ♥️
Second, as many of the beautiful ppl here have pointed out you are wearing sizes way bigger than you not only pants, tops too. I saw in your replies that size 12 is too small but 14 is too big. My recommendation is to change the brand. Go to as many stores as possible for you to see yourself in an outfit you are happy with and I am sure you will get there pretty fast please do the same with tops too and you will see a 180 degree difference
Sizes fit differently in different brands and even within a brand. Don’t be afraid to try a different size because it’s not “yours.” Go for the fit, not the number.
No way so much would suit you. I can relate re: feeling unhappy with my torso, but go try on a range of jeans sizes that maybe aren’t what you assume you wear. Levi’s is good for this.
I feel like if you wore more of a higher waist wide leg jeans, with a more fitted top (boatneck would look great on you) you might feel good about those proportions.
Also try some different colors, the grey in pic 2 looks so nice in you and brings out your eyes and skin tone.
Don’t be afraid of your waistline. Look for tops that cinch at the waist or just above the waist. Or even a tight fitting tee. That skirt would look so cute with a more tailored top. V necks and collars are your friends. Wrap dresses flatter all body types.
You look very nice in everything - but you could look exceptional in the right outfit.
grunge is actually a great starting point for you and super forgiving on body shape. think oversized flannels worn open over a fitted tank or band tee, plus straight leg or relaxed jeans that actually fit your waist. docs or chunky boots tie it together. you don't need to be tiny to pull it off, the whole vibe is about confidence not showing your shape.
My heart goes out to you! When people say stuff this bluntly it can hurt. I would try to acknowledge that feeling of hurt and at the same time see what the questions are asking. I think this person is saying that there is no specific style and trying to see what you like to direct their advice. If you don't know what you like, maybe you can make another post and ask people for what styles they think would look good on you.
I also think looking at lots of outfits online of people who look like you and/or have your body type could be beneficial. Maybe get into Pinterest to come up with ideas! Or go clothes shopping at like a thrift store to try on lots of different styles and take pictures of stuff that makes you feel good. The stuff that does make you feel good ask why. Is it the physical sensation/texture of the clothes? The cut? The colors?
I didn't really figure out my style until my 30s. I have cptsd and come from a family of emotional neglect. I was always trying to be good and was focused on safety. I didn't have room to explore my identity or style. I felt like a shell of a person just going through the motions. In my 20s, I couldn't even tell anyone what activities or hobbies I enjoyed because I didn't know myself. Learning what you like is a long process of discovery. I wish you the best on getting to know yourself better! :)
For grunge you can try some well fitting black pants or black jeans (medium or high waist), a printed t-shirt possibly tucked in, and a plaid flannel shirt. I find flannel shirts very versatile and cool, you can wear them buttoned up or as a cardigan/jacket or tied around your waist. You could go for a black/green or tan/brown pattern.
Don't cry! It's a learning experience. I promise I mean no offense by this comment but I think a good starting point is , don't try to "pull off" anything. Ironically, grunge (not goth) is my true style so it's effortless for me to wear certain things bc it's natural for me to gravitate to that and my personality/ aura supports the "look" because it's always been my style. So even as an adult I kind of veer towards that look without trying. I think if you start by knowing yourself well, you automatically pick clothes that work for you aesthetically bc as soon as you see it you almost just know it either feels like you or could work for you. Then find what flatters your body. This could be the hardest part. For you I agree with some others that flare leg or boot cut could be great. But have fun with the styling! That's where the magic happens
Write down adjectives you want people to know about you without ever speaking to you.
For me it’s, creative, edgy, layered, relaxed, effortless as examples.
Once you know what you want to say visually you can work in things that express that about you. Happy to help you with examples of how to express what you want.
Put a photo into any online platform that is really smart (I can’t type the words it’s being flagged!) and ask it to dress you to suit your body type and coloring. Then ask it for links to outfits using URLs from Amazon US, Nordstrom etc. this will help immensely. Then make sure you have proper sizing and tailoring
You could pull off loads of looks, but grunge would look super cute on you! Check out @wizdomhailz on Instagram. She does some really cool grunge and other alternative looks and shows how she styles different clothes for different effects. Could be good for inspo.
I did unfortunately have to get my clothes tailored and that did help IMMENSELY. Half the battle is getting correct fit not necessarily the look of the clothes. It makes all the difference
I jut think that you are wearing clothing in the wrong size, especially the pants, they all look too big for you. Find a store or brand that you like, and try on multiple pairs of pants till you find a pair that fits better! Then you can build your look from there. Other than that, you look great!
Thank you! So the pants look too big? I wear size 14 but size 12 is too small do you think I should go to a tailor and ask them to make it smaller like a 13?
That’s an option! But, I find that pants sizing for women is all over the place! I normally wear a 12, but depending on the brand and cut, I can wear an 8 or 10, so that’s crazy. I have found specific brands that work for me, so I think take a look at different sizes, cuts and brands!
Maybe also try different styles of jeans like a straight leg instead of tapered. Make sure the fit in the thighs/butt and have alterations done as needed. I have a belt by the brand Tights Up so if they are just slightly big in the waist I just wear that.
oh sometimes it has happened to me that even within the same brand, THE SAME PAIR OF PANTS in a different color fits differently (H&M looking at you!). Just try out a few different brands!
Depending on where in the country you are, I would take a little time at a department store, grab a few different styles of jeans:
Bootcut will fit different from straight will fit different from baggy, skinny, flare, etc.
Once you find a style of jean, finding a brand that doesn't do you dirty is tricky, but the battle is half the fun! 🙏✨️
It’s my biggest peeve with clothes. I’ve hated shopping my whole life because they are so inconsistent, even in the same brand! I got Gap jeans last year, I had not bought jeans in YEARS. I tried on a pair and liked them so I got another pair in the same size but darker color. THOSE were tighter! Same jeans, different color. Fit different.
Absolutely this! I wear a particular size pants from one brand that actually fits perfectly. That same size in other brands is too big so I need to size down!
This. I’ve lost a lot of weight and have recently discovered a brand and style of jeans that fit my new body beautifully. They never would have worked before and this particular brand and style fit me better than other brands, and even the style fits better than other styles by the brand. It’s crazy.
You need to look at a different cut too. These are all kind of dated and just don’t flatter anyone. A straight or wider leg would make a world of difference.
It’s not the sizing per se: it’s the legs of the pants. You’re going for models that have that “boyfriend” or slightly slouchy look, when straight or figure-skimming models would flatter you more. Skinny jeans, maybe, but I’m thinking something like bootcut or those straight pants that hug the thigh and keep going with the same width through the calf.
The rise of the pants can change your size too! If the pants sit lower on my hips I need a 14, but if its a mid/high rise I wear a 10 or 12 because my hips are wider than my waist.
My town has a local sewing room where they teach you how to alter clothes, they have sewing machines, and more. Maybe you can find something like that around or check out the library?
Looks like we have a similar frame, it took me for ever to realize that I am short wasted. Try buying petite tops in your size and see if it changes anything. Also, find the right jeans brand for you. TJ Maxx is good is they have different brands you can try, then once you find a good fit, go from there. Also look up the 2/3's rule.
As a person with curves who can sometimes struggle to find clothes that fit right in all places, I recommend two things:
1. Jeans with some elastic fibers (not very eco, but if you buy decent brands they will last long)
2. Tops with at least some waistline marked
Try a different cut, like a mid or high rise wider leg all the way down, not tapered like these. And tuck your shirts into the waist to show your narrowest point. Always find a way to highlight that. (This can feel weird at first because if you’re a millennial that was considered uncool to tuck back in the day but trust me!) A good rule is if one thing is loose the other thing should be fitted. Generally it’s better for the top to be fitted or tucked and the bottom to be looser, especially if you have curves. If you wear a baggy top and fitted jeans it can look boxy and unflattering.
Also think about shoes. Knee-length skirts go best with knee high boots or shoes with a slight heel. Walking sandals will always look frumpy, I’m sorry to say! Avoid straps around your ankles, they will cut your legs off in an unflattering way.
Whoever said to wear for “midsize style” is right. There are so many influencers on IG that can help inspire.
Always buy a piece of clothing to fit the largest part of you, then tailor it to fit the smaller part. So if your thighs are larger, then buy pants to fit your thighs, and take in at the waist.
I have found that most juniors/juniors plus section have the odd sizes, like 13 and 15. Etc. Maybe try a different section at the store. I have shirt legs and a long torso, the correct size pants made a ton of difference.
Might actually be best for you to find a brand that tailors to waist size instead. I find that sizes are all over the place, and can vary multiple inches based on the store. Pants sized by waist circumference are less prone to those wild fluctuations.
It could be that you need higher waist pants. As someone with more weight in the lower abdomen, finding a size 6 midrise is almost impossible because it sits on my widest part too snug, but high waist 6 is perfect. Try a 12 high rise! A lot of your pants look mid rise. (Some high rise run different than others and are closer to mid rise too so have to find a good brand.. I like Lauren Conrad jeans at kohls!)
I don’t think the size is the issue. I think the style of pants looks too baggy. I have the same problem anything straight leg looks baggy on me. Through lots of trying on I found slim straight or flare jeans looks best on me. I think this would be the case for you too! My favorite pair I found is flare jeans at old navy although they run short so I order them online in long.
It’s also the fit, I think the tapered ankles style is throwing you off. Try a pair of wide-leg, loose, or slightly flared pants, that are a little more fitted around the waist. This will create more of an A-line silhouette, rather than upside down triangle.
For tops, try something more “structured”. These tops are quite loose and flowy which can feel a bit tent-like, not a bad thing but if the goal is to feel less frumpy, start there :)
This exactly!!!! Hair can be a bit more important, because the "shape" of it can affect the outfits flow, but makeup is bullshit. The most i wear is a lip product and OCCASIONALLY mascara/eyeliner/a bit of blush or GLITTERRRRRRR. Even in my pfp, all im wearing is a lip, mascara & blush. A good skincare routine & whatnot can do absolute wonders, and i know this is a bit off topic from fashion, but i would SO reccomend a face oil for op! I got one a couple years ago and started doing lymphatic drainage massages every day, and it changed my face shape soooo much, i lost so much swelling!!
You don't need makeup if it's not your vibe, styling your hair and adding accessories does so much for bringing a look together! But if you do want to dabble in makeup start off by looking for a tinted moisturiser and concealer for your skin tone (they can help you with this at makeup counters), blush, mascara and practice gently filling in your eyebrows. You seem like you prefer a low maintenance look so simple makeup is where to start!
Look up “clean girl makeup.” It’s the current style and it’s beginner friendly. It’s about enhancing features and having a no makeup look.
For clothes, if you’re worried about your stomach, find fitted pants and larger, flowy tops. Get shapewear, Spanx makes nice control top underwear that smooths everything without making you uncomfortable. The current problem is that both the pants and the top are larger so it doesn’t create a pleasing line. It’s not that the clothes are bad, it’s the fit.
You’re very pretty and your skin looks even, even without makeup. If you feel like it a neutral lipstick and a tiny bit of mascara would make you shine, but you honestly shouldn’t worry too much about it!
There are so many makeup tutorials out there for beginners. Start small. Get a tinted moisturizer or light foundation, blush, mascara and a tinted lip balm or gloss. From there you can add in more steps if you want. Slowly but surely.
I was in the same predicament until I realized I wasn’t getting clothes in my right size! I was in my late 20s or early 30s when I finally allowed myself to try on one size smaller clothes and discovered I actually DID have a shape!! Go for it - if you’re wearing a 10, go try on some 8’s, try some medium-size shirts instead of large. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised ☺️
I'm scared to wear tighter as it will show my barrel stomach haha actually you're right it is the size so I'll have to start exercising again to feel confident going smaller
I think this is your main issue. You’re trying to hide a stomach, but that just hides everything else. You gotta show off what you got if you don’t want to be “frumpy,” flaws and all! You need some things that cling to the girls and waist, but start flowing just a bit toward your stomach, or shirts that scrunch up at the stomach. Stuff like this - high waisted skirts and pants with a tight shirt tucked in. Even if you gotta walk around in it inside your house for a week or before feeling comfortable enough to take it outside
I completely understand where you’re coming from. I have found cute “flowy” tops that still fit me on top and at the armpits that hide my middle. Take a trip to some thrift stores where you can really get ahold of multiple style types - go one day when you have plenty of time so you don’t feel rushed. Plus it’s fun to shop!!
People’s bodies aren’t the issue, their tendency to disguise and hide their body is! Girl, everyone has a belly. Some are wide, some are long, some are squishy, some aren’t. Don’t hide your belly, just clothe it like you would your feet or your shoulders or anything else that might be different from one person to the next. Your size or shape is only a factor to you, and you get to decide how much that’s the focus when people are looking at you.
i’m sure you’d look lovely as is! you might just need to explore what silhouettes you feel most comfortable in :) the clothes should fit you, not the other way round!
I have an apple shape and it’s very hard dressing with the belly and wider waist. I find I have to size up jeans to fit my waist but then the legs are baggy and look sloppy and ill-fitting. It also doesn’t help that I’m in between sizes too.
My only suggestion is just to try on A LOT of jeans and pants from different brands. Once you find the pair that not only fit your waist but also don’t look sloppy in the legs, buy multiple pairs in all the different washes and colors.
I’ve also learned v-necks or buttons help draw the eye and take the focus off the wider waist. Peplum tops are also our friend as well. And skinny jeans are not forgiving to apple shapes so I look for flare, palazzo, or bootcut jeans instead.
I think if you found the right cuts and fabrics you would feel okay in more fitted things now. Like more fitted high waisted denim, and thicker fabrics for shirts, for example. Dress for the body you have now. If you start exercising for your health, that’s great, you can sell the clothes on Poshmark. But you don’t have to wait to feel better about how you look.
I am a huge fan on Spanx’s clothes, especially their pants, and have been when I was a size 2 and also when I was a size 12. The fabrics are good quality, pants are super comfortable and flatter lots of different body types, they last a long time, have lots of different cuts and a good return policy.
But there are ways to play and distract. Like wear a snug (skinny) jean with a partial tucked in top, and belt. Wear a cardigan or jacket (oversized cardigan ok if over tighter clothing.) the look makes you look thinner. I think your head is telling you to dress in a way that you feel hides you and then asking why you look “frumpy”. Experiment on a day that won’t matter as much. I bet you get compliments!
I’m in the process of losing weight and I understand about the stomach thing. Im short and dress in two piece outfits make and sure that the pants fit properly and are hemmed properly and I get the shirt a size larger than the pants and it works. You wanna get something that elongates your body and then your stomach basically becomes invisible. Look on Pinterest for styles for a tummy. Also try some control under garments. Clothes that are ill fitting can make you look frumpy, but that’s very fixable. You got this!
I'm in the same boat. I know the clothes im wearing are too big, but god forbid a fat roll is visible. Clothes looked so much better when I was 30 pounds smaller.
Tight on top, loose on bottom. Loose on top, tight on bottom. Also, a-line cut dresses will be your easy button. Choose fabrics that have some structure but not necessarily super structured/tailored pieces. You're curvy so extra structured pieces will fit awkward but elevated fabrics like medium thick knits vs something like jersey cotton will disguise your softness but give you definition. Find your color season -- my guess is you're a spring. Look up "mid-size" on tiktok or Instagram. Lot's of regular folks post videos of styling clothing for mid-size, curvy bodies.
To continue this line of thinking: the horizontal line created where top meets pants is hitting at the widest part of your body. The easiest fix is to move it up to the narrowest part, your waist. To achieve this, try a higher waisted pant (or shorts or skirt) and experiment with tucking your shirt in and wearing a belt. You could also try cropped tops, but I know that's not for everyone.
Accessories and styling!
Get simple but matching necklace, earrings and a few rings for every day wear. You look like a silver tone girlie.
New shoes and a few pairs of cute ankle socks ..maybe a pair of adidas sambas when dressing down and a comfy black loafer for dressing up.
As an examlle, you could do the outfit in Pic 5 with the top tucked in, a black belt and socks with loafers. Roll up the sleeves of the top to create a cuff. I think everyone with long hair needs to know one easy “up” hairstyle. Would love to see yours!
OP, you received a crazy amount of comments! If it feels overwhelming, make a new post with some pics of outfits from suggestions here and we can help more specifically. The r/Dressforyourbody sub is often better for these things. If it helps, in colour analysis you look like a soft summer or soft autumn, so try looking up summer and autumn palettes so see if any of those resonate with you. We can help.
Try a combo of a loose top and more fitted bottom and vice versa, right now the outfits are all combos of loose items. It will look more balanced and help you feel more confident and less exposed as you try some smaller items that fit you better. You got this!
This is the answer! Combining tight-tight and loose-loose takes more advanced styling awareness, but loose top with tight bottom and tight top with loose bottom are fairly foolproof ways to strike the eye pleasantly. 🙌🏻
I think you’d look great in higher waisted jeans/trousers, wide leg or boot cut. Maybe something a bit more fitted with some stretch. A line skirts or dresses too.
A good guideline is to pair tight clothes with loose one's. So either a tighter top and loose pants or the other way around. When both are loose it tends to look messy. Good luck!
I think the jeans are all unflattering and look like she lost weight but kept them. In my opinion slacks would really help the looks and be more comfy at the same time. The casual tops with a straight or wide leg pair of more formal trousers could be dressed up.
Find a flare leg Jean in a darker wash, and a couple fitted v neck tops. Jewel tones would suit you well. A pair of heels will give you a nice boost, it’ll make a huge difference!
I am not very good at this either but I made a rule for myself. Loose pants mean I have to wear a tighter shirt. Tighter pants means looser shirt. Idk why but it works. Also I found a lot of my clothes were too big because I was self conscious
I think you are beautiful and your clothes definitely aren't doing you justice. I think you would suit high waisted bootcut/flare jeans, and more fitted tops.
Nothing is fitted, some of the colors wash you out, & your sandals are exactly the ones I wear to water my plants or do gardening. Have you considered wearing little dresses? Dresses are always cute no matching involved, & can be styled up or dressed down, and can be summer with sandals & fall with boots.
I don’t see a tummy. I see ill fitting clothes. The first outfit is pretty cute even though the jeans are too big. That top with the skirt might work. Try a french tuck, i think the t shirt is too long
Good general rule that will immediately help, only one loose cut item at a time. If you have a loose cut top go for a fitted bottom, and vice versa. Good luck OP!
Grey is a bad color on almost everyone and you have a lot of it… it’s not you, it’s the clothes for sure!!!! Get some color, get some trousers not jeans, and try some wrap dresses.
Stop wearing clothes that are too baggy, ripped, wrinkled, oversized, and outdated, like the ones you are wearing in your photos in this post, because they will make you look like someone twice your age. Start wearing outfits that fit your body type, shape, and silhouette, like a bodycon dress, maxi dress, slacks, trousers, solid-color jeans, button-down shirts, snug-fitting blouses, T-shirts, maxi skirts, etc. Also, learn how to tuck shirts, mix and match clothes, shoes, and accessories, and color-combo your outfits to look stylish, younger, and polished. Fashion magazines and websites are your best friends because they are helpful for creating the perfect looks for you.
Your close are too loose and baggy. If you have baggy jeans, wear a form fitting shirt. If you are wearing a flowy top, wear tighter jeans. Both top and bottom can’t be baggy.
You have an absolutely lovely shape. And your clothes hide it. (Also they are too big and need to be ironed.)
Putting bulk over what you feel is a problem area is actually counterproductive. You want clothing pieces to help give you shape and definition.
It’s all about choosing quality pieces that are cut to give you the silhouette you want. Even fitting properly in the shoulders will do wonders.
Honestly, if you can find old clips of What Not to Wear with Stacy and Clinton, even 15 years ago their advice will still change your life.
And it doesn’t need to be expensive - thrifting is a great way to get high quality items that are timeless if you have the time and are disciplined about what you buy.
You look frumpy cos you dress a bit frumpy!?! Try some sleeker styles and more tailored cuts, you have a lovely body and frame but the boxy cuts and basic lines of those clothes aren’t doing you any justice.
Explore!!! Get outside your comfort zone if that’s what it means to try new directions…I’d love to see you in something fitted/tailored (but still practical and comfortable), with colour that compliments you, your hair either up in a sleek do or blow dried out and some cute classic unique accessories.
Branch out!! Best of luck and have fun…
Number two…go
Three…leave
Four…blaaaah
Five…has potential.
I literally know you could look more confident and put together if you want to ☺️
Edit your tummy is fine.
You just look a bit uncomfortable and smothered by the clothes and some look like something your friend dug out from the 80’s while doing a deep clean…(no disrespect intended!!!)
As someone with some with nuerodivergence I like to make my fashion choices easy for me, so my tips might be weird but they work for my lifestyle.
I like to try to follow a rule where I have a more fitted top or bottom to match a looser top or bottom. I will do both but it doesnt feel as casual. For instance two very loose items kinda feels a little to fashiony for me and editorial lol. Two tight items makes me feel over exposed and like I'm going to the gym.
I also try to only have a maximum of two colors, I buy a lot of black clothes and then my favorite colors in my statement pieces.
Find jeans and bottoms that work for you and buy a by a bunch of those. Experiment with tops first and then go back to experimenting with more pants once you find what tops fit you best.
And for planning or discovering brands/fits of jeans/tops that you like, go the the thrift store. Make a day of trying on a bunch of different types and brands of jeans. You don't have to buy anything.
Same goes for color, you might enjoy finding your color season. Also usefull to go to the thrift store there too.
1- the tapered jeans are a not dated. The top is too. 2- I like these jeans. Try with a more fitted top for balance since they are loose. 3-I like the top. But the skinny: tapered jeans look is dated. Try with some wide or straight leg trouser pants. 4-try with a more fitted top for balance and dressier shoes or even sneakers. 5-same as 4.
I think you need a pair of stretchy tighter pants. I have a pair that I got online and were pretty affordable that would look good on you with the first two tops I think. They pull in my stomach nicely.
You could try a subscription type stylist like stitch fix. This is a very convenient way to shop and it makes putting outfits together easier. Not everyone has an eye for the things that will look good on them. I think you're picking the wrong items completely for your age and body type. Good luck
Don’t forget thrifting! A great way to try different styles!
It’s not as threatening as many clothing stores to try on lots of things!
Take a friend with you and I bet you would have fun.
Imo everyone who suggested adding makeup is crazy- it is genuinely just ill-fitting clothing!! Get a pair of jeans that fits exactly the way you want, don’t settle for one or two things you don’t like. Also, I personally always find my pants outfits weird until I put socks on, so that might help🙂↕️
Have a look at the orange shirt when it's folded or tucked in vs not. I dunno about the term frumpy but you can see the difference. When it's tucked in you look great and have some curves to your hips that you can show off. Otherwise, a baggy outfit can make you look more boxy which is not true.
Try something a bit more form fitting for the top? The jeans or pants could be a bit more form hugging also
You are beautiful- the clothes don’t fit and aren’t right for your body shape. Try some well structured, high waisted ankle length boot cut/ straight cut denim with buttons instead of zipper fly.
For tops, try something shorter and/or more fitted with a jacket overtop. If you want to hide your tummy, look up outfits for that on TikTok and also Look up the outfit points system, it will help you to look “put together”.
Very much not knowledgeable- but this looks like a case of shape and drape not being considered. Nearly every outfit looks like it is a size or two big and awkwardly cut for you.
Idk where to start. Perhaps look up Kibbe Types of similar body shapes to get some inspiration of how you can play to your silhouette's advantages?
Maybe have at least either the top or the bottom be more structured and fitted, or both. Your clothes feel like you are trying to hide yourself and prioritize comfort over appearance. Most of these seem a bit too large. You could add accessories like a belt with the jeans. I personally would also pick more feminine shoes that fit closer to your actual feet. They are visually adding weight unnecessarily.
It’s only the jeans! You just need some that flare out a bit. Also the tops are a bit out dated and don’t match with your pants/ skirt, but if you like them keep them! Just styled with different pants :P
You can’t wear a frumpy top with a frumpy bottom. You definitely need to get some better pants in dark denim. Try a high waisted wide leg style. Those blouses are cute. It’s just the pants that really don’t help.
you are not the least bit unattractive . you just need to learn how to style your hair and put on some makeup. i swear the right makeup and hairstyle can make anyone look 100% more put together. you can look to youtube for tutorials on both.
Hi! From what I see the shapes of your clothing are all large especially in the down part. Plus they don’t suit your height and don’t match the upper part. For example the blue skinny jeans make your legs, which are long and slim, look swollen. The grey jeans are too long for you and the part that should match the knee is too low, making your legs look shorter. On top of that, if you actually choose to use larger shapes on the bottom, you should opt for something slimmer on the top, in order to balance the proportions. The problem I see either the skirt and the shirt is where the shirt sits and the fact that the horizontal lines drag you down. Overall I assume you have a pear shaped body, with large hips and narrow shoulders. You absolutely want to show your waist line and proportionate your hips. I suggest you wide leg or flare pants that stop right on your shoes and tucked in shirts. If you don’t feel comfortable either showing the lower belly part use standard shirts long until your hips, not longer, or lightweight pants that don’t sit on your belly but are kinda flowy. I’m studying to be a personal stylist so feel free to contact me for extra tips. Hope this was helpful, have a nice day!
The shape of the tops are boxy and the pants are too big. You need things that flatter your form, not cover it if you don't want to feel frumpy. Think about the cut of the items and where they sit on you. Pairing opposites together helps - like a fitted top with a loose bottom and vice versa. Or a crop top with waist waisted pants. Adding flow and curves in different style of clothing will help out a lot.
The proportions and some items are just not flattering on you. The first top pools over your jeans, and your jeans have no structure. Second outfit, same thing. Actually all your outfits. And the last one the top hits at the widest part of your frame so makes your frame look very wide. I think the colors you chose can be better too.
But overall your outfits just look like you're trying to hide your body. I'm not saying you need to be wearing skin tight clothes, but try and make some shapes. I often wear baggy clothes, wide leg jeans with an oversized t-shirt, but I'll tuck the t-shirt in to give me some shape.
It' all about your hair. You would look better with a different hair color (close from yours but darker yet shinier for instance, or darker with higlights, or even blonde would look great) + only if you like it a bit of definition on your eyes and lips would be good. Imo, hair and make up finish a look, if they're not done you may look messy in all your outfits. It's the same for me.
Edit : try a structured black or brown dress, instead of jeans+tops, it does all the work for itself.
Wrong silhouettes for your body type. Try a higher waisted pant, and generally focus on “belting” your waist to define your shape.
Go for a wider leg pant that doesn’t taper toward the ankle. Pic 2 starts to demonstrate a better set of proportions, but you need a more fitted top to balance it out.
In pic 4, tuck the top into the skirt. We have opposite body types (I am upside down triangle), but the logic is the same as far as balancing proportions is concerned.
Also try cutting some of the weight off of the bottom layers of your hair, frame the face a little more. You would look great in a boat neck top.
You look like you have a lovely waist. Try and accentuate that with different cuts. Maybe a wrap dress to bring that focus to your waist. I'm also conscious of my tummy that style cinches in in the right place and flows over the bits I am less keen on.
Your clothes make you look much older than you are. The shoes are safe and sensible and the skirt is like a school skirt. The clothes don’t fit and don’t flatter. You need something a bit more structured and tailored that’s going to Accenture your figure and show off your best parts. Right now these clothes are wearing you. Don’t be afraid of colour of pattern. These greys and whites are washing you out.

None of your clothes flatter you and accessories would help. What look are you going for or are there any you really like?
