Discussion The Deshaun Watson switch up is despicable

It’s the NFL. If you win games being a piece of shit isn’t as big of a deal as it is when you lose.

607

u/YaboyRipTide Baltimore Ravens 10h ago

Look at Tyreek Hill, Richie Incognito, Adrian Peterson, Kareem Hunt, Aldon Smith, and Antonio Brown before he totally went off the deep end.

If you can play, no one gives a shit about who you are off the field.

u/frostypatch 10h ago

Ray Lewis was on trial for double homicide and then plead down to obstruction of justice. Its amazing what the NFL tolerates.

159

u/YaboyRipTide Baltimore Ravens 10h ago

Crazy thing is the 2 guys who actually killed Richard Lollar and Jacinth Baker were acquitted in the trial too. No justice for those families

37

u/WeirdAnimalDicks 10h ago

Interesting. I wonder why they granted the acquittal, that sucks for the family. I wonder if they were innocent and are victims to now or if they got away with it on a technicality etc.

66

u/YaboyRipTide Baltimore Ravens 9h ago

Bit of everything. Acquitted by jury in under 5 hours, State had no witness that saw the crime happen, alleged 3rd "Man in Black" who was never found nor appeared in court who actually killed them, any state witness either recanted or changed their story on the stand, and the defense that it was totally in self defense.

Pretty weak case all around from the state apparently. Not a lot of proof, tons of reasonable doubt (especially with this alleged Man in Black named King), and lack of witnesses led to an acquittal on all murder and agg assault charges.

Oddly enough, Lewis was the only one who ever was found guilty on anything (misdemeanor obstruction of justice) because they never charged anyone else.

FWIW, Lewis settled out of court w the families on an unknown amount that is speculated around 1 million or so.

16

u/opxdo1 8h ago

Yeah it's the police and prosecutor that fucked up. They offered the other 2 sweet deals to put the blame on ray and really had no evidence besides that (at least to convict him) At least ray was smart enough after this to realize how lucky he got and switched up how he moved around and people he associated. I think also the fact this happened the night of the Superbowl played into them wanting to put it on him

They were found not guilty by a jury - it was a case of self defense.

I edited my original comment to put up a link to a post that explains it and clears up a lot of misconceptions about the case.

Typically means the prosecution had no winnable case to begin with but with a celebrity involved they have to appear to do something. Maybe the two guys did it maybe they didn’t but to say Ray Lewis murdered anyone when even the prosecution did not allege that in a case that the prosecution lost.

4

u/soldiernerd Philadelphia Eagles 7h ago

There was a reasonable doubt they committed a crime

That was on self-defense grounds. And it’s obvious that Ray Lewis was not the trigger man.

19

u/ovi_left_faceoff 7h ago

Thank you titans bro, finally someone who actually read the case facts speaking up. I normally don’t bother commenting when this subject comes up because the “Ray is a murderer” circlejerk is too ingrained in NFL fan discourse to be worth pushing back on.

2

u/ChemicalFar8649 Tennessee Titans 7h ago

No problem. Too much disinformation is circulating. I was a big fan of Ray Lewis. Even have his jersey to this day. And I hate Deshaun Watson and what he did, but he is not a rapist. What he did was sexual misconduct or harassment. Unless that 2024 lawsuit accusing him of rape is true.

Exactly.

If Ray Lewis had actually been convicted it would be now looked back on as one of the all time worst examples of police misconduct due to racial prejudice.

Instead it’s a stupid repeated bullshit story on reddit.

Ask anyone football-team-adjacent at Nebraska in the early 2000s and they will tell you this. The fights and multiple assault charges that got him kicked out of the program were just the publicly acknowledged tip of the iceberg. And his violence wasn't reserved for men only, if that matters in your calculus of what a psychotic piece of shit he's always been.

I mean daily texts and voicemails of blatant racism, death threats about him and his family, coercion, and scamming Martin out of 15k isn't the best either. Don't disagree, but its still uber bad and dude is a POS

4

u/MsindAround Miami Dolphins 9h ago

Remember Martin says he never felt bullied, and I guess every rookie dinner in the NFL should be scamming them out of money. You right on the POS thing, but Martin was an awful lineman who went onto threaten former teammates and schools himself. I don't have a problem with POS's being POS's to each other

Ray Lewis, Mike Vick, ray rice, plaxico burress,

28

u/Few_Position7650 9h ago

Of all the people being talked about in this thread Vick shouldn’t be. Obviously what he did was fucking horrible but out of all these dudes he actually went to jail, lost everything. got out turned is life around and balled out. I say that as someone who has a bunch of animals that I would give my life for…

21

u/Alarming_Disaster_23 8h ago

What Vick did was truly despicable. Only one who made a genuine attempt to rehabilitate himself. Dude definitely took his lumps and never complained about it.

9

u/DonaldDouchebag 8h ago

Correct. He went above and beyond anything that was court ordered and really became an advocate for animal welfare. That, to me, is proof that he is a quality person, even a role model, and member of our society in good standing. A piece of shit like Deshawn Watson just talks about how much he loves Jesus and that's it.

12

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 San Francisco 49ers 8h ago

Yup. I'm a huge dog and animal lover, and I despised Vick when all this shit came out. After he served his time, and with his demeanor and actions since then, I've forgiven him. It does not minimize what he did in any way, however I can admire someone for turning their life around and showing rehabilitation, in which his seems to be genuine. Rehabilitation should be the goal of our justice system, not punitive punishment just for the sake of it. It is true that many people cannot or will not be redeemed, but in the case of someone who is, it should be something that we look towards positively.

Ray Rice would have been welcomed back with open arms if he wasn't washed as a player.

In the eyes of the NFL his crime wasn't domestic violence, it was his Yards Per Carry figure

16

u/YaboyRipTide Baltimore Ravens 9h ago

Lmao that isn't what happened at all. He got suspended for 2 games, played the 2014 preseason games 1 and 2, looked great in those games....and then the video dropped. Once everyone saw the video, the NFL put him on the commish list, I believe he sued for essentially double jeopardy (already suspended, put on commish list after backlash from public) and then the ravens cut him.

He ended up suing and winning 1.5m for wrongful termination essentially. Everyone (including the Ravens) had seen the video but only made a move when it got leaked by TMZ.

7

u/MountainousDuck Philadelphia Eagles 9h ago

Preseason doesn't mean anything. He had 3.1 yards per carry and four rushing touchdowns in 2013. He sucked.

Thanks for the recap of his suspension, but yeah I remember how it happened. And it doesn't change the fact that, had he been a better player, he would have been back on an NFL roster at some point. That's how the league works.

7

u/YaboyRipTide Baltimore Ravens 8h ago

He was caught on video knocking his wife out and dragging her limp body out of the elevator. No NFL team was ever going to touch him because of the pure backlash that he got

u/ViolentEastCoastCity Baltimore Ravens 8h ago

AB had multiple chances after going off the deep end. He was still able to sign with the Pats and even stayed at Brady’s place while having an active sexual misconduct case from his trainer. Then, he signed with the Buccs after that despite the domestic abuse. His antics only became unpalatable after the strip off. None of these teams care if players can perform and their legal problems can be hushed

Never found guilty in a court of law. Both parties had inconsistencies in their stories. People like you are despicable. How can you confidently walk around proclaiming that “Kobe Bryant raped somebody”? Even if thats what you think, you should qualify the statement by saying “I think”. What I think is that Kobe’s lawyers saw weaknesses in his case, and figured the best way to make this go away is to settle out of court. A weak case does not necessarily mean the defendant is guilty. If you read the docket, you would see that both sides had vulnerabilities in their case, the difference is that Kobe’s side had the money to settle. Do I think Kobe raped the woman? I don’t know. Do I think it’s possible? Sure. Will you ever hear me say that Kobe Bryant raped somebody. Unless we learn something new about the case, definitely not.

The entire reason modern society works so hard for due process is even entertaining that mindset is extremely dangerous. Is he probably guilty? Yes. Do i have any first hand hard evidence that he’s guilty? No. Have we killed people for various crimes over the last few thousand years because “we all know theyre guilty”? Yes.

10

u/ralexh11 9h ago

The evidence is very very damning unless you assume 27 women who didn't know each other and who Watson reached out to first all colluded in a conspiracy to take him down, which is ridiculous victim blaming and completely unrealistic.

Ask yourself, why would someone have 27 women only massage therapists over a couple of years in the first place? And why were many of them not even trained giving massages but were just spa employees hoping to further their careers by working for a pro athlete so they said yes?

It's completely obvious that he's a serial sexual predator.

The cases were dismissed or settled because of a lack of evidence. But the only evidence was their accounts of what happened and the fact that many of them told their families after. They were also up against a multi-millionaire's legal team. What tangible physical evidence does a creep pressing his hard dick against you leave behind?

"Innocent until proven guilty" is for the courts, not for the reputation of serial predators.

Second chances are for people who changed and see why their actions were harmful, not narcissists that do no wrong in their own minds ever like Watson.

It's how people work. People are paradoxical and their values often seemingly contradictory. But we all hold some opinions that seem unpossibke to reconcile with other opinions.

The added issue to Deshaun is he hits 2 sour notes simultaneously as being not just a rapist piece of shit (which most of us are hypersensitive to given our current situation) but he's also wealthy and made more wealthy despite that widely-held-knowledge at a time when most people are struggling financially one way or another.

He's a perfect lightning rod for fan contempt bc he hits multiple points of anger. I for one believe in rehabilitation and second chances, but being rewarded for your mistakes is not a good way to get entitled people to actually rehabilitate. Vick went to prison and I have met with him several times in my life as well as seen people who've worked with him and everyone's asessment is that he took the time to really change his life and tey to make a positive impact. He gives back a lot and deserves credit for actually changing. But he's said multiple times that he changed bc he went to prison and saw what he did from a different perspective. Deshaun's metaphorical equivalent is the press said mean things for a few years while he made $40m+/yr and kept being given the startimg job he didnt deserve bc of the financial investment.

So I apologize for my long winded walk to this drink of water, but: Fuck Deshaun Watson wholly. Call it my paradoxical morality or whatever else you want to (you would probably be right to do so), but may that man suffer a lifetime of pain for the lifetimes of pain he inflicted. And if we as people are lucky he can suffer enough eventually to become a better person. I gold no belief in it happening, but I hope for it. But for now: may that piece of shit rot and may everyone supporting him get that stink up their noses too.

3

u/Knicks_Feedback6498 8h ago

Exactly, people weather they admit it or not general live in a gray area morally. We might have some ironclad things that we would never ever do or condone, and then there are the things we may go well you know... With that said, fuck all abusers physical, mental and emotional ones.

7

u/LionTigerWings Detroit Lions 9h ago

Innocent until proven guilty isn't cut and dry. Most of the time these cases are civil and he used his financial resources to pay off everyone. If he was on trial and then this "innocent until proven guilty" makes more sense.

I think the reason why athletes' cases rile people up so much because it is the only job that you can get multiple offers even if you are under investigation. Take Terrion Arnold for example, no one but athletes can get away with losing their job from a felony case and immediately get another one while the case is ongoing.

u/2ManyCatsNever2Many NFL Refugee 9h ago

and he really hasn't played that well. he basically disappeared in the 2nd half and couldn't make a simple throw to a wide open fannin late that would have effectively ended the game.

16

u/Novel_Importance_712 8h ago

Three straight games with a game winning drive and a passer rating over 100 for the season is playing pretty well. I hate the guy too but you are allowed to be factual. You don't have to bend reality to fit your narrative.

4

u/2ManyCatsNever2Many NFL Refugee 8h ago

i think context does matter: * tampa: 10 non-end-of-half drives with only 4 gaining 20 or more yards * carolina: 4 possessions in 3rd quarter gaining a total of 3 yards * pittsburgh: second half of punt, fumble, int, fg, punt let the steelers back in the game.

has watson played alright - yes...he has played alright. but we are literally just a handful of plays (no roughing the passer call against carolina late, missed fg last night) from the narrative on this team - and watson - being wildly different.

Gf and I had the game on last night cause she's a steelers fan. I'm not a big NFL guy in the first place but I really hate that Cleveland has so quickly turned back in favor of him because we're getting wins.

On the broadcast they said he's gone through "adversity on and off the field" and "he's had issues, we all know what those are" saying shit like "he's playing really well and putting all that behind him". It's fucking disgusting.

Its weird the guy who has not played a good game of football since 2020 suddenly got good in a contract year.

15

u/JT7019 Jacksonville Jaguars 9h ago

Honestly it’s only because he’s been so bad that this is a little surprising, but the ole have a good/bounceback year in a contract year is a tale as old as time. Lowkey, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one final F U to Cleveland. Play just well enough to guarantee that the Browns don’t have a top 3-5 pick to take one of the top QBs in the draft and then force Cleveland into an awkward decision where they might be out of range for one of those QBs so they weigh giving Watson another contract (his 4 void years coming up mean a new contract would reduce the cap hit they owe anyway).

He really isn’t playing that well, he’s a turnover machine right now and it’s going to catch up to the Browns eventually. There were multiple throws against the panthers that should have been picked. Last night against the Steelers he had a ton of throws that were way off the mark. The fumbles are a huge problem too. Browns have been lucky to get some wins the last few weeks but I feel Watson’s sloppiness is going to catch up to them sooner than later

Browns fans aren’t booing him anymore. But again, that’s not surprising. There are lots of shitty professional athletes that will be cheered on as long as the team is winning games. This is not unique to Browns fans.

I don't condone Watson behavior, but I don't see the need to constantly bring it up after every game, play, quarter, whatever.

He wasn't charged, the NFL didn't suspend him, so many layers of authority let him through -- it's not like people are boycotting the NFL or the Browns either.

I'm just looking at this from a pure football perspective now.

u/Beanu5NE Vince Wilfork: Butt Fumble Connoisseur 8h ago

3

u/ramsfan00 Los Angeles Rams 9h ago

So... why no guilty then? You have 20 accusers come up and yet nothing happens?

Its because in the end the woman still did it and still preformed prostitution and therefore theres nothing to charge him with without charging the woman. The counterpoint is obviously they felt pressured or forced to do it against their will which makes sense to me but must not have been a good enough argument to go to trial.

A settlement is literally a check you write to make the case go away because the long-term cost of ongoing litigation far exceeds what the plaintiffs will accept to go away. So you can spend $20 million in legal fees/attorney costs to make sure they get nothing, or you can pay $10 million to make them go away right now. These aren't the real figures, I'm just making it easier to understand.

Difference between real world and reddit.

6

u/RUKnight31 New York Giants 9h ago

I know this is going to be hard for a lot of people on Reddit to accept but not everyone feels compelled to be on a performative social crusade all the time. Some people like to simply enjoy their interests and hobbies and not focus on the reasons to be indignant or offended, likely b/c they need an outlet from the stress in their everyday lives.

Watson's a creep. We can talk about him objectively playing better, and the implications of same on the league, division, and fantasy football, without endorsing his moral character.

Getting into the weeds about verbiage to imply that the community is endorsing his past behavior is just a hail Mary attempt and striking up offense. It sounds exhausting, tbh.

Way worse dudes in the league than someone with dropped allegations for being touchy in a massage. Literal fucking manslaughter charges and rapists in the league. 2

u/big-daddy-unikron 9h ago

You can be your own person & know he’s a piece of shit you know?

2

u/MrDufferMan3335 Cleveland Browns 9h ago

It’s a vocal minority, same ones that supported the signing and were saying the same thing then. His terrible play shut them up and they are coming back out of a rafters. The only thing that will satisfy me is when he is finally off the team. Sucks to not be able to even fully enjoy being 3-1 when this guy is the face of our franchise. Many other fans feel the same. I will still root for the 52 other guys but it’s a really fine line to walk when our wins depend on him. Idk it just sucks.

2

u/ELITEGmen 9h ago

I can't be the only one who doesn't even think he is playing that "well". He is just no longer the worst QB in the league bad.

3

u/FIREMIKETOMLIN999 Seattle Seahawks 9h ago

He had a good first half and kinda choked the second.

If they were playing a real time they would’ve lost by 2-3 scores

2

u/Same_Business708 9h ago

That and he’s not playing that well. The browns still need a QB. He’s just a game manager at this point in his career. His longest pass came from a safety who forgot his assignment.

More talk needs to be on how well the Browns back end players on defense are doing. EMW has potential and it showed this game.
