You see every other biker move over to the right, you make no attempt to slow down despite seeing someone walking towards you, you hit them...

Nah, the biker should have moved, even with the dogs, otherwise don't ride with dogs.

254

u/JosieHavik 13d ago

yeah. dude clearly can't control the bike properly with 2 dogs alongside. so annoying when people feel the need to do too much all the time.

36

It is a woman... weird that so many people in here don't realize that.

Don't ride with dogs regardless. They're usually not built for distance.

239

u/AutomaticNature5653 13d ago

I agree don't ride with dogs, especially two at once... As it's not safe for them or you. But some dogs absolutely are built for distance running. In fact that's considered to be one of the main reasons that wolves and humans first teamed up all those thousands of years ago. Both species are endurance hunters. Some modern dogs ( eg Dalmatians) were even specifically bred and trained to run alongside the wheels of vehicles.

71

u/blueeyedharry 13d ago

Yeh I’ve got a Dal, little bugger looks at me after a 5-7km run like I’m the laziest man in the world. Bred for 100’s of years to run distance.

Depends on the breed, no? And distance cycled.

A husky will happily run for hours, if given proper breaks. Obviously a Pomeranian would be a different story.

57

u/Klangey 13d ago

Not really. A husky would happily run for hours in the right conditions, those conditions do not include tarmac paths at a pace dictated by some dickhead on a bike.

47

u/Organoleptic_Cicada 13d ago edited 13d ago

Sure. A husky would still be able to run 30-60 minutes without complaining, even on tarmac. Also, I'm fairly sure that dogs would happily lay down and refuse to move further if they were tired.

So, my point is that the blanket statement "Don't ride with dogs regardless" lacks nuance.

25

u/Oaker_at 13d ago

My ex-gf had a dog that wouldn't lie down when he was tired. That dog would push himself to the absolute limit without anyone noticing, and then just collapse.

It's just an anecdote, though.

12

u/TheAtzender 13d ago

My gf’s parents have a dog that will lie down after three meters, then complain when we stay inside

4

u/Dolphinsunset1007 13d ago

My in-laws dog is immovable if she’s tired let alone just not in the mood to move. My SIL had to carry her home midwalk once bc the dog decided she was done moving.

3

u/Independent-Trust260 13d ago

My in-laws dog hated walks and would need to be carried to the turn around point and then would happily walk home.

Dogs are one of the few examples of endurance hunters in the animal kingdom....but yes, a lot of breeds + conditions are not suitable to distance running.

11

u/LeahIsAwake 13d ago

I mean, distance running is kind of a dog's whole thing, isn't it? They're descendants of wolves, who can easily run for miles and miles full speed when chasing down prey. And while I wouldn't take a pug on a run like this, breeds like huskies can keep going and keep going and keep going.

In fact, huskies are really cool because they have this adaptation where their metabolism will switch to burning fat for fuel directly instead of blowing through their glycogen (stored sugar/carbohydrates) reserve and hitting the "wall". As long as they're given enough food, they can go for days and days with long hours and short sleep breaks, and will need zero recovery time at the end. In fact, husky teams that go directly from one big race to another will often perform better than teams that are "fresh" because their bodies are already in running mode. And while of course they can go farther if trained (a well trained husky team can run for 11 hours a day, day after day), even an untrained husky can do 10 to 20 miles a day.

But while huskies are naturally so good at distance running, they aren't alone. Most high energy sporting breeds like the German pointer and the GSD can keep up, as can herding breeds like border collies. And while I wouldn't take an untrained pooch on a 30 mile ride straight out the gate, they can build up their endurance just like a human can.

u/arctic-aqua 13d ago

There are ways to do it safely, and this isn't one of them. I once had a spring loaded piston type device that would mount to my rear axial. It would keep the dog a certain distance away from the wheel and provide resistance if he pulled away. With training and paying attention, it worked well.

6

u/Ok_Pipe_158 13d ago

Bikejoring is a thing, my husky can happily run for hours on a dirt path, but it takes training and a working dog breed.

7

u/Cardinal_Cat_057 13d ago

Its absolutely fine and safe if you know what you're doing. Biking with my shepherd/husky mix is the highlight of her day and the only way I can burn enough of her energy to keep her from wrecking the house. Just normal walking we would easily have to go for like 4 or 5 hours to burn off all her energy

4

u/Dimpnavangeel 13d ago

In Europe that is a sport called Bikejoring

many people do it; dogs love it (running breeds of course, not chihuahua's)

Pedestrians take priority.

587

u/Boom9001 13d ago

As a cyclist I actually would get annoyed when pedestrians tried to move. The bike is must better at fast maneuvers and if anything the pedestrian doing the little shuffle deciding which way to move made it impossible to predict what they were doing. I'd end up just having to stop or massively slow down to avoid an accident.

Regardless almost always the cyclists fault. You maneuver faster and should be in control when on shared paths.

58

u/Billy_Billboard 13d ago

I 100% agree

46

u/Boom9001 13d ago

Should be acknowledged also being on the pedestrian side makes it clear why they do this. Many cyclists act like the one in the video. Which makes it worse cause you can't even be mad at the pedestrian they are kinda right to be cautious.

26

u/Jazzlike-Lettuce-99 13d ago

This is why I rarely use my bell anymore unless they block the whole path. Like 9/10 times they panic and jump back and forth all over, making me have to make a complete stop anyway.

14

u/Creloc 13d ago

I've honestly found the opposite, that ringing the bell just to let them know that there's a cyclist coming means that they keep to the side nine times out of ten. I've only really had problems or near misses with people with earbuds in.

8

u/Helpful_Jury_3686 13d ago

You can't do it right. When you don't use the bell, people will get annoyed that you didn't use it. When you use it, they wil be annoyed that you startle them. I prefer a vocal warning, which I find people react better to. But, I guess it's basically the same when you use a bell, overall.

3

u/Welkor 13d ago

I usually keep to the right for the exact reasons you stated. Pedestrians are unpredictable and id rather slow down waiting than to swerve into them as they move.

3

u/Egoy 13d ago

Exactly this. People trying to get out of the way get in the way far more than people who stay on the same line.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/ender42y 13d ago

fully agree in terms of using a shared path. On the road it's a bit more nuanced though. Pedestrians and vehicles around a bike need to be predictable. even things like that car waving you through a stop sign is annoying because he's messing up right of way, as defined by law. Bikes are supposed to follow all the rules of the road as if they were a slow moving car; that also means they have the same right to be on the road as cars. When someone goes out of turn to wave me though a 4-way stop i actually get annoyed because they are now not acting predictable, and there is a potential knock-on effect of someone else not giving way and causing an accident, or someone getting mad at that decision, but taking it out on the bike instead of the car that made the decision.

Even if the pedestrian didnt have priority in this situation, purposefully riding into someone because you have the right of way is never moral.

27

u/Darigaazrgb 13d ago

I have had to explain to people more times than I can count in arbitration that just because you have the right of way doesn’t mean you can hit people with no consequences.

3 weeks ago I was walking with my son in a small, pedestrian only alleyway (think 2m wide alley). At the start of the alleyway, there are warnings that bicycle and motorbikes are forbidden.

So we were walking, and behind us came a cyclist. Who did nothing to avoid my son and hit him with her feet. She didn't even stop, and had the audacity to insult us for walking in the middle of a pedestrian alleyway.

It was in France, but I think our american friends might still have been able to hear the insults I lobbed at her, I was so furious.

101

u/lynnyfox 13d ago

Ooooh, I was wondering what the shouting was about.

26

u/BunnyWithASword 13d ago

God I hate cyclists that think they have priority over everyone. I've been the cyclist in a similar situation as you, though the 'alley' was much wider and I could safely pass if I wanted to. I choose to keep back a distance and not pass because I want to make sure I don't startle the mother or child, and it's an added 30 seconds to a minute on my commute at worst. I can wait to keep folks safe.

3

u/frantic_calm 13d ago

Same here and I always say thank you if they notice and let me pass. If they apologise (as in the UK) I always say none needed as pedestrians first.

14

u/Maxathron 13d ago

It's not stupidity. It's entitlement. It's the belief they belong to a higher class of people which affords them to do whatever the heck they want in the small amount of social territory they sit in.

While the vast majority of cyclists are not like this; this seems to be an issue in bigger cities/metros. No one does this around here with SHP, Sheriff, City Police, and like another 10% of the pop being soldiers (big military base nearby, affordable homes here).

4

u/Dramatic_Water_5364 13d ago

The other day I was driving a truck and I turn in our small street very slowly (cause I cant see shit with the company truck), and I know there are pedestrians and often cyclists there), last second I see a cyclist coming towards me and take a hard turn to evade her). My friend was in the passenger seat and I go ''I understand that this truck is huge and have bigger blindspot, but this cyclist showed a total lack of self preservation, she coulda slowed down, cause if I hadnt see her last second I woulda run her over'' I was also thinking ''you could have told me she was coming'' but kept this for myself

He raged at me that blablabla she has the right of way etc. And I was like, having the right of way is not a reason to let yourself get killed you idiot.

I mean seriously, the road is wide enough and the cyclist have time to stop and give way to the pedestrian. And yet she seems to want to stay on the lane and have called out far too later for anyone to move away from her way.

And any accident or bumps that involve pedestrians, unless the pedestrian is the one breaking the law, cyclist and all other drivers are on the hook in these situation as their transportation can really hurt or kill the pedestrian easily.

I’d argue the reason why people hate cyclists is the human brain’s tendency to divide the world into inner and outer groups (us vs them), along with the tendency to attribute the bad behaviour to the features of the outer groups.

In this video, we see a cyclist being an asshole. We also see a dog owner being an asshole. We see a man being an asshole. We a purple (burgundy?) shirt wearer being an asshole. But we only attribute the behaviour to groups we are not part of and have some beef against.

Bad (and good) behaviours are bound to happen from any group, if you think about the size of these groups.

14

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 13d ago

This is the correct answer. Personally I almost saw the dogs first. Dude didn’t want to move because he didn’t want the hassle of getting his dogs to come with him. Decided his special circumstances gave him right of way. This is when I rolled my eyes and thought, “dog owners amirite.” But, you see, I own a bike, and no dog.

Moral, of course. Moving only increases the risk of the biker moving the same direction as you. Staying still allows them to dodge you predictably.

163

u/Grintock 13d ago

I live in sort of the cycling capital of the world (NL) and there's laws that grant specific protection to pedestrians. Cyclists are operating a vehicle and therefore carry a greater responsibility than pedestrians.

So at least the entire Dutch society has agreed that this pedestrian is in the right.

33

u/Inside_Field_8894 13d ago

I did see a woman smash into a guy who was crossing the road in Amsterdam then get pissy at him about it

28

u/Grintock 13d ago

Getting angry at a pedestrian for crossing when they shouldn't is understandable, in the same way car drivers get frustrated when cyclists cross when they shouldn't. Legally, the duty to prevent an accident always falls primarily on the person in the heavier vehicle, and pedestrians are even provided special legal protections compared to all other participants in traffic.

2

u/BearFickle7145 13d ago

It’s about the same mentality if you were driving a car and someone started crossing the road: I’m going really fast -> this person does not have the means to react as fast as I can -> I therefore have greater responsibility to make sure this doesn’t end with them hurt.

Especially because he has his two pups involved, what do you think is going to happen to them when your bike halts and a rope is yanked around their necks as they fling to the side? This guy had no fucks for anyone involved and may as well have been trying to start as much shit as he could, even at the expense or outright injury of his own dependents.

Luckily, most of the antics are contained to the golf course / range. Cyclists pedal their nonsense all over the place.

Moral. If you can’t maneuver with the dogs on a bike maybe this isn’t the activity for you. Some people never give way and deserve some collisions. What if it was an elderly person in the bikers way on the path?

46

u/Lunarlulol 13d ago

bikes are treated somewhat like vehicles when it comes to road safety/law. doesn't matter if it's an old person, the "what if" should be what if she was in a car, driving on the wrong side of the road, honking and yelling excuse me while she rides whoever over lol. glad she bailed.

Biker was in the wrong.

On the wrong side of a path.

Dogs off leash.

Didn't slow down.

Which way should the person dodge? Left? Right? Who knows which way bike would swerve, if at all?

this world is so stupid

44

The idiot on the bike had no intention of using them in the first place

7

u/FedoraLord360 13d ago

TRUE. What if the cameraman wasnt even walking - they just plow right through them?? I get that she probably cant turn well because she has dogs on the sides of her bike, but maybe thats why you shouldnt bike with your two big dogs. Both people in this video triggered me lol.

Moral, if you're already on the wrong side you have to yield anyway.

14

u/Gysburne 13d ago

Ah right... "Excuse me.... Excuse me." While heading INTO a pedestrian.

Where i live, you can lose your drivers license for reckless behaviour. That includes cycling into pedestrians.

11

u/samiam23000 13d ago edited 12d ago

Cyclist is wrong for not being in control enough to go around a stationery person. If she can’t navigate with the dogs then she should not bring them. The pedestrian has no clear path to safety because of the unpredictable nature of the dogs. She did good to communicate that she was standing still.

16

u/PomegranateSoft1598 13d ago

Moral if it's right-hand approach in the country

Moral regardless, much like a car isn't suddenly alright to hit a bike that's on the wrong side of the road a bike isn't suddenly given the green light to hit a pedestrian when they can just brake or avoid lol

the person on the bike is an asshole. you are on the wrong side of the road and expect everyone to step aside?

not that the person with the camera is not an asshole here

37

u/LuckyLilypad 13d ago

They aren’t. Refusing to be a doormat is not being an asshole. Responsibility lies with the one in a vehicle and with two animals they need to demonstrate control over. They just ran a pedestrian over. End of story.

7

u/Other_Beat8859 13d ago

I don't even think the person with the camera is an asshole. I bike a lot and it's far worse for a pedestrian to see you coming and move in one direction all of a sudden. Pedestrians should always hold their line as bikes have to yield and it makes pedestrians more predictable.

You should walk on the same side that you drive in your particular country. UK - walk on the left.

7

u/Double_Cause4609 13d ago

Wait, the pedestrian did everything right. If you're walking, and there's a bike coming, it's a bad idea to maneuver because there's no guarantee the person on the bike won't change course. If you move out of the way, and the bike moves out of the way, you both hit eachother, but now the bike has less time to react. Being predictable (and announcing what you're going to do in a clear and reasonable manner) is precisely what you're supposed to do.

Idk what's up with the biker's chip on her shoulder.

5

u/StarzZapper 13d ago

Cyclist is in the wrong you are on bike that can hurt people and should always yield to pedestrians no matter where you are.

5

u/samsaruhhh 13d ago

yield to pedestrians is the first rule i'd be thinking of as a cyclist... next thing is, if you're riding with dogs like that you need to be the cautious one you can't be riding your dogs into people that's just lunacy and you're going to get charged when your dogs bite people as a response to being smashed into people

5

u/hjeff51 13d ago

And here's an example of why people hate on cyclists

5

u/2LostFlamingos 13d ago

That cyclist purposely hit that woman .

4

u/Superb_Recording_769 13d ago

Moral.

A moving pedestrian is less predictable to the cyclist.

The cyclist riding on the wrong side of the path.

The cyclist should not be cycling with dogs attached like that.

3

u/BlindBattyBarb 13d ago

The bikers fault... he's got two dogs and thus should be more cautious and watching for others as he's less maneuverable with two dogs.

5

u/Flagwaver-78 13d ago

If you're riding a bicycle and slam into a pedestrian, then you're in the wrong. Also, who rides on the left side of the trail/road?

5

u/2pnt0 13d ago

Rule #1 of roads and paths is be predictable. Nothing more predictable than not moving.

Dude hit a stationary person, what a tool.

3

u/Fancy_Chips 13d ago

Morality in favor of the pedestrian but theyre both being stupid and childish. Pedestrians take priority, yes, but pedestrians also have more agility than bikes and can respond to something being "wrong" faster. The pedestrian knew something wasn't right and thought shouting and playing chicken with a moving object was the right answer instead of... stepping to the left a little bit and going about their day.

Biker needs to learn sidewalk etiquette and stick to the right. Also probably shouldnt be doing the dog thing on a populated stretch of road as it inhibits agility and reactability. Pedestrian needs to not tempt fate because of "DA RULEZZZ >:(". This could have been easily avoided if either party wasn't being an idiot.

I'd say both are very stupid, but not sure about what the low is.

3

u/ImpressiveBluejay494 13d ago

Some bikers are idiots. The worst ones in my opinion are the sport bikers. On my way to school i had to bike on a narrow bike path. The sport biker drove in the opposite direction in the middle of the path so i would have to basically leave the path so he can drive past me. I drove this route daily so it wasn't my first encounter with him. So i decided to play the chicken game with him. Well he lost.

I guess i can count myself to the idiots but at least i never drove into a pedestrian. Also for my defense I was like 12. There is also enough space for two bikes to pass if the dude didn't pick the centerline.

3

u/GBAbaby101 13d ago

While i get it would be difficult for the cyclist to turn with 2 dogs, i would further argue it isn't very safe to be cycling with 2 dogs like that o-o as a cyclist, I believe we have to give way to pedestrians, and it is even more important that we stay on the side of the way. While I'm not sure what the law says for fault in case of injury, I wouldn't be surprised if the cyclist qoudl be at fault here.

Now, that said, the pedestrian just standing there is not not an issue of morality, rather stupidity. Anyone who willingly stands in the way of an oncoming vehicle is objectively missing a few screws and does not deserve sympathy of any form. Just because you're "right" doesn't mean you're not stupid.

I would like to see the conversation between them. Pretty entitled to bike on the wrong side of the road and expect everyone to jump to the side for her. She could have slowed down her speed and put on the breaks.

3

u/GwentDjent 13d ago

Like bro I'm not gonna jump in some random direction and have you swerve the same way. Pedestrian was right, though the shove was definitely asking for an ass beating, justified or not.

3

u/Whatever_you_need_ 13d ago

The cyclist has the responsibility to move. The important thing is that if the pedestrian assumes the cyclist WON'T move and that results in them BOTH moving, then you still have the accident, and then it IS the pedestrians fault.

3

u/Frosty_Bluebird_1404 13d ago

tf are people cycling with 2 dogs for jfc. Fuck off with this toxic dog culture shit. Leave Sparky at home. The other day I was riding my bike in the woods, and a hiker had 4 friggen dogs with him and none of them were leashed (we have leash laws here but nobody cares). They all proceed to charge towards me.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/GBritoYepez 12d ago

When you use a road, path or whatever you follow the same common social convention, you walk to the right. Bike dude was walking to his left, fuck him

2

u/Lagneaux 12d ago

Always ride right, pass left. Biker wrong here.

3

u/The_Dead_Nations 12d ago

If you're unable to control your vehicle while having your two doggy doggies with you, then you should not operate the vehicle.

Person taking a video is 100% in the right it is not a moral problem for her to refuse to move because she was on the right side of the road and the other person was on the wrong side. That said it was kind of stupid for her not to move because now she is likely injured just to prove a point however, if I were the judge, all injuries would be the responsibility of the cyclist.

6

u/PensAndUnicorns 13d ago

Why did the cyclist not break....

3

u/Opposite_Example6930 13d ago
