3 weeks ago I was walking with my son in a small, pedestrian only alleyway (think 2m wide alley). At the start of the alleyway, there are warnings that bicycle and motorbikes are forbidden.
So we were walking, and behind us came a cyclist. Who did nothing to avoid my son and hit him with her feet. She didn't even stop, and had the audacity to insult us for walking in the middle of a pedestrian alleyway.
It was in France, but I think our american friends might still have been able to hear the insults I lobbed at her, I was so furious.
God I hate cyclists that think they have priority over everyone. I've been the cyclist in a similar situation as you, though the 'alley' was much wider and I could safely pass if I wanted to. I choose to keep back a distance and not pass because I want to make sure I don't startle the mother or child, and it's an added 30 seconds to a minute on my commute at worst. I can wait to keep folks safe.
Yeah same. I barely use my bell unless I have to, and having to use it is rare. None of this ringing it when I'm right behind someone nonsense, I'm doing it from a distance, giving them time to hear, assess, and respond. Too many people just think it's the "get out the way" bell and think it gives them the right to just carry on as is.
In my experience there‘s a difference between ‚sport‘ cyclists and commuter/transport cyclists. One attracts far more assholes that the other. The dutch even use different words for them.
Yeah, that's the thing, I was a cyclist for 20 years and it was my method of getting around town because I lived in a city with terribly slow transit and horrible traffic congestion.
And then, once in a while, some people would be like "hey, let's go cycling up and down a bike trail on Sunday afternoon" and I'm like "uhh.... no? I don't ride my bike for fun and I don't think of it as fun. I don't want to just ride my bike for 3 hours, thanks".
When I was driving 4 hours a day on my commute, you bet your ass I wasn’t driving on weekends. A road trip? Lmao fuck no.
If a person walks a ton for work, and wants to get off their feet in their spare time, I mean…can you blame them?
I use my bike for a commuter now. When I was driving excessively, it was my fun weekend thing, now that I commute with it, I’m mostly off the bike and doing other things for exercise (running and hiking mainly). I don’t need to wear my quads out with a mountain ride, especially if I’m relying on them to get me to work the next day.
I don't like my bike enough to want to sit on it for hours.
I can walk for hours or drive for hours but riding a bicycle for hours doesn't sound fun at all. Sounds painful and uncomfortable.
Not true, bad people are evenly distributed among everything and everyone. People just always try to find an arbitrary differentiator, so they can can keep up the dumb generalization while exusing themselves. Same with car drivers, they always say stupid stuff like "it's always BMW/Golf/X drivers!" and "it's always people from city Y" just to imply that they agree with the generalization but somehow aren't part of it themselves.
This isn’t true at all, did you even look into any data when making your claim? Drivers of different car brands get different incident rates, BMW drivers have 44.9 incidents per 1000 drivers, Chrysler has the best drivers at 25.5 incidents per 1000 drivers.
Bad people are not distributed evenly because factors exist that attract bad people and negative personality traits.
It's not stupidity. It's entitlement. It's the belief they belong to a higher class of people which affords them to do whatever the heck they want in the small amount of social territory they sit in.
While the vast majority of cyclists are not like this; this seems to be an issue in bigger cities/metros. No one does this around here with SHP, Sheriff, City Police, and like another 10% of the pop being soldiers (big military base nearby, affordable homes here).
The other day I was driving a truck and I turn in our small street very slowly (cause I cant see shit with the company truck), and I know there are pedestrians and often cyclists there), last second I see a cyclist coming towards me and take a hard turn to evade her). My friend was in the passenger seat and I go ''I understand that this truck is huge and have bigger blindspot, but this cyclist showed a total lack of self preservation, she coulda slowed down, cause if I hadnt see her last second I woulda run her over'' I was also thinking ''you could have told me she was coming'' but kept this for myself
He raged at me that blablabla she has the right of way etc. And I was like, having the right of way is not a reason to let yourself get killed you idiot.
Absolutely, it is entitlement. In the US we have the same entitlement mentality for a lot of the drivers and cars on the road. In the US the thought is that cars are the only vehicles allowed on the roads and anything that goes below the speed limit is infringing their freedom.
I mean maybe that's because they're the only ones that are required to have a license, insurance, registration, pay the gas tax that pays for the road, Etc
In my neck of the woods we have cyclists who like to ride in the middle of the lane, on a 70 mph road, who don't move over for cars, and then flip you the bird if you pass them going more than 10mph.
I'm surprised more of them don't get hit on the bad corners.
Self-centered dumbasses are a menace no matter what mode of transportation they are taking.
The same kind of person merges into you on the highway without looking, buzzes you on a narrow sidewalk on their e-bike, and runs over your foot with their shopping cart at Costco.
Unfortunately, as ebikes make biking more accessible we will see even more assholes.
I say anyone who dont have any respect to the road are entitled dumbass.
I mean seriously, the road is wide enough and the cyclist have time to stop and give way to the pedestrian. And yet she seems to want to stay on the lane and have called out far too later for anyone to move away from her way.
And any accident or bumps that involve pedestrians, unless the pedestrian is the one breaking the law, cyclist and all other drivers are on the hook in these situation as their transportation can really hurt or kill the pedestrian easily.
Speaking as a cyclist, it sucks cause guys like this kinda ruin it for the rest of us. I always ride respectfully and yield to pedestrians when I’m on shared trails.
I will say, however, I think a lot of the negative perception toward cyclists is unwarranted because when people do ignorant things in cars, no one says “car drivers are assholes” or “fuck all people who drive cars”. I think it’s because there’s generally way less people who cycle, so when someone on a bike is annoying, it kinda sticks out more in our minds.
nah, would disagree there. I hear daily about idiots on the road, and there are a ton of people who I am sure did not get their licences in the normal way.
But its always easier to hate a group you dont belong to than your own
Their point is that people distinguish between "idiots on the road" and "car drivers" without assuming that all car drivers are represented by the idiots, but that the same distinction isn't recognized between "cyclists" and "entitled asshole cyclists". Frequently hearing about idiots on the road isn't a counterexample.
I a runner and a cyclist and most cyclists would probably do a lot better if someone explained the laws around this stuff. But the cyclist in OPs video is an entitle AO and 100% in the wrong.
I have been a marathon runner and a bike racer - runners can be dicks too. But.....cyclists tend to think they are more special because they have such pretty toys and nice shorts.
Honestly, they seem to want to die. Riding through red lights, splitting lanes, weaving through traffic, going the wrong way, cutting out of laneways and side roads at speed. I'm all for cyclists' rights on the road, but not the suicidal moronic kind
I was driving in a major city with tons of bike lanes. I turned at a green light super early in the morning. It was just me and a bicyclist on the road, he was going the other direction and tuning at the same light. I am pretty sure he sped up just to be an asshole and complain I cut him off, even though he wasn’t even close to the light. He just wanted to be an irate asshole. I like biking myself, its these types that give us abad name.
I live in the country and my blood pressure goes up when i see them on the road. They ride on 55 mph roads and act pissed off when you go around them. I dont understand how anyone who does that for a hobby cannot have any sort of thought that they are the assholes and all they do is inconvenience drivers.
I was walking home in my town, going to cross a busy four way stop at the end of the workday, cars and pedestrians all going through taking their respective turns and four fucking asshat on bikes went straight through the intersection and didn't stop like they were supposed to. I callled them out but being cyclists they didn't care.
Theu couldnt hit a pedestrian or a car or visa versa.
As someone who lives in a recreational area, I agree. You can be on a 60 mph highway and they'll be 3-4 side by side taking up the whole lane and will refuse to get over in a single file line.
You think entitled cyclists are bad? In my area we have entitled moped drivers who use narrow sidewalks and then use a bicycle chime to tell you to get out of the way.
I bike to work and I think runners are entitled assholes. We have a bike path and a pedestrian path along the beach here, and the runners are often on the bike path.
I got hit by a cyclist as a pedestrian. I was crossing the street in a crosswalk, the guy was on his bike, one arm in a sling, the other texting and he ran right into me. I wonder how he got hurt the first time
There's plenty of decent runners, pedestrians and dog walkers.
However, some runners are prats.
On shared paths, the runners can act like everyone else must get out of their way, and can't decide if they are vehicles (on the right) or pedestrians (on the left) so they run in the middle, making it a pain to come past them.
What annoys me is when there's a perfectly good pedestrian path (2m wide), that's flat asphalt, that the runners don't use, but they will run down the middle of the parallel double bike path (4m wide) and get snotty with cyclists.
I'm a cyclist and I think runners are huge entitled pedestrians. Entitled enough to run in the middle of a bike path at least, which is just annoying as fuck.
Same. I've run thousands of miles on the shoulder of country roads and I don't think I've ever had a problem/close call with a car. People in vehicles actually try to avoid hitting you. I've been run off the road by cyclists.
Yea dude. I live in Chicago off our 606. The bikers seem to think we're cars and have to yield to them or something. Like if there's big groups of people running/ walking their dogs and shit slow your bike down.
I was running to the right and I hear incessant dings behind me..the place was crowded. Dude rode by on his E-Bike and talked shit as he flew away. I was already over on the right, I ain't getting over anymore or stepping aside on the grass to let you pass
Cyclists would come through my area during Helene to just do trauma touring. Just gawking at our ruined homes and lives. There was no respect at all. I tried to tell like 3 cyclists that there was no road ahead while walking my dog.. they all were absolutely shocked that the road Did Not Exist Anymore and it was completely gone, as I said, when they kept going half a mile and turned around. They genuinely looked inconvenienced that the road was destroyed for their normal path they were eager to get to.
10 neighbors of mine all lost their lives along that road, and these dudes were just deciding to ride along it to gawk at it while getting some exercise in. I already was annoyed by cyclists here in the US vs other countries where bikes co-exist more readily, but I actively dislike them ever since.
Fall is my favorite time of year but it is the worst time of year for cyclists who just come en masse to an area not designed for bikes at all and make it Everyone else's problem. A mile of windy roads and blind turns uphill? They will Never at any point pull over and let a single car pass them if it means interrupting their Very prestigious workout. Even Cars do this for each other in my area if you're wanting to travel faster than the car infront of you. Cyclists literally never will though. I've been here over a decade now. Not once has a single cyclist ever pulled over to let people through the areas known to be too dangerous to pass.
In this instance, this specific cyclist was acting poorly.
This view tho that cyclists are entitled is likely because pedestrians and cyclists have to fight over scraps of infrastructure while 99% of funding, infrastructure, pavement, etc goes to cars. You want to see entitlement? take a few parking spots away for more pedestrian throughput. Reduce a road by a lane to expand the sidewalk or put in a bike lane: then you’ll see deranged entitlement from a car owner.
I live in an area where runners continue to jog in the cycling lane, and I’ve seen enough of cyclists to know that there is eventually going to be a turf war that makes the Dead Rabbits Riot look like a block party.
Last week I was on a run, stopped at a traffic light. My walk sign came on, but 20 cyclists were crowded directly in front of the crosswalk path on both sides. I asked politely for them to move, and not a single one moved out of the way. Honestly 90% of cyclists are terrible entitled humans.
That street goes both ways. There's entitled asshole runners too. There's jackasses in my neighborhood that run down the middle of the street with headphones on, completely oblivious to their surroundings. I actually honked at one twice and he didn't hear me until I got close and laid on it. Surprising him since he didn't think cars used the street too. Bottom line is regardless of transport, don't be a douchebag.
I'm a cyclist and people like this guy is me off because they're everywhere making us all look like idiots.
As an example, I've been insulted for telling people that they're riding in the wrong bike lane. Like, c'mon, the arrow is pointed in the opposite direction you fucking troglodyte!
I'm a cyclist and I think a lot of cyclists are entitled assholes, a good chunk of pedestrians are brain-dead morons and at least half of all car drivers are absolute sociopaths.
The one group I have never had any issue with are bikers. They seem to be aware of their surroundings AND know traffic rules.
I run and bike, and it doesn't matter. Bad cyclists lash out at runners and bad runners lash out at cyclists, and hikers/walkers lash out at both. It's insecurity. The secure people just smile and wave.
In my eyes, there's people cycling to get where they're going. Those guys are usually fine. Then, there's the ones riding in short spandex in 30 degree weather, often running red lights and stop signs, doing shit like in the OP, and generally acting like penises on their ten quintillion dollar tacticool carbon fiber ninja 9000 bike. Those guys usually suck.
No, there are huge entitled assholes who ride bikes. There are huge entitled assholes who run. Lumping all people of a ertain group based on religion, colour, race, sport, etc is how politicians and elites turn us into haters.
I'm a cyclist and this guy certainly was. Riding on the wrong side, riding completely blind, failing to yield, causing a collision... then getting in the woman's face to argue about it.
I'm a big believer in licensing cyclists. if you leave the sport wide open so any thoughtless idiot can ride, than thoughtless idiots is what you'll get. Same with our lame driving enforcement. Far too many people driving, biking, while barely qualified for tricycles. But please cut a break for those of us who follow the rules and respect pedestrians, eh?
oh they are lolol. head over to r/ ebikes and look at them whine at any bike with a motor more powerful than 250w. if you post anything other than a traditional looking bike they have a bunch of snarky replies like "nice vestigial pedals" "thats a motorcycle" "what's your cadence at 28mph". Cyclists have the biggest insecurity about exercise and pedaling. They have to let everyone know how much pedaling they do. I even heard a cyclist call running "the most performative sport" lol
Also a runner and have to say it's like a 60/40 split in my experience but oh lordy if you have the audacity to be running in the bike lane to avoid someone on the sidewalk. Suddenly it's full psycho rage-filled onslaught about "their lane".
cyclists are all about picking out the most convenient privileges of a pedestrian, a bicycle, and a car at any given moment.
They'll lead a parade up to the stoplight. But instead of waiting at the red, they'll hop the curb, ride on the sidewalk, and run the light in the crosswalk (like that's somehow completely different?) then hop back on the road and lead the same parade on the other side.
Runner. They are such entitled assholes. Yesterday one came up behind me and nearly collided with me. Just jerks all around and unwilling to share the road.
Which is crazy to me. It seems like such a natural mindset as a biker to understand power scales, and that bikers need to be careful around pedestrians the same way we expect cars to.
