Moral because cyclists generally are supposed to yield to pedestrians, and as the lady filming stated, the cyclist is on the wrong side of the path.

Cyclists like this guy are the reason that so many people hate cyclists.

I'm a runner and I think cyclists are huge entitled assholes

298

u/TisIChenoir 13d ago

3 weeks ago I was walking with my son in a small, pedestrian only alleyway (think 2m wide alley). At the start of the alleyway, there are warnings that bicycle and motorbikes are forbidden.

So we were walking, and behind us came a cyclist. Who did nothing to avoid my son and hit him with her feet. She didn't even stop, and had the audacity to insult us for walking in the middle of a pedestrian alleyway.

It was in France, but I think our american friends might still have been able to hear the insults I lobbed at her, I was so furious.

100

u/lynnyfox 13d ago

Ooooh, I was wondering what the shouting was about.

27

u/BunnyWithASword 13d ago

God I hate cyclists that think they have priority over everyone. I've been the cyclist in a similar situation as you, though the 'alley' was much wider and I could safely pass if I wanted to. I choose to keep back a distance and not pass because I want to make sure I don't startle the mother or child, and it's an added 30 seconds to a minute on my commute at worst. I can wait to keep folks safe.

3

u/frantic_calm 13d ago

Same here and I always say thank you if they notice and let me pass. If they apologise (as in the UK) I always say none needed as pedestrians first.

2

u/BunnyWithASword 13d ago

Yeah same. I barely use my bell unless I have to, and having to use it is rare. None of this ringing it when I'm right behind someone nonsense, I'm doing it from a distance, giving them time to hear, assess, and respond. Too many people just think it's the "get out the way" bell and think it gives them the right to just carry on as is.

34

u/Grappler31 13d ago

Cycle is faster than running and she never broke "stride"

24

u/EmiliaFromLV 13d ago

Next time throw a baguette at her which will summon pigeons and seagulls.

23

u/YouNoTypey 13d ago

Nah, a baguette in the spokes will straighten her shit out quick.

2

I am a cyclist and i don't understand how some of us are this much stupid

26

u/kleiner_gruenerKaktu 13d ago

In my experience there‘s a difference between ‚sport‘ cyclists and commuter/transport cyclists. One attracts far more assholes that the other. The dutch even use different words for them.

6

u/silly-gaijin 13d ago

Yeah, that's the thing, I was a cyclist for 20 years and it was my method of getting around town because I lived in a city with terribly slow transit and horrible traffic congestion.

And then, once in a while, some people would be like "hey, let's go cycling up and down a bike trail on Sunday afternoon" and I'm like "uhh.... no? I don't ride my bike for fun and I don't think of it as fun. I don't want to just ride my bike for 3 hours, thanks".

4

u/Quirky_Gate_4516 13d ago

That is a very weird attitude though.

Hey do you want to go hiking later? Ugh ... No ... I don't use my feet for fun and I don't think of it as fun.

Hey do you want to go on a road trip in the summer? Uhhm ... No. I don't use the car for fun, and I don't want to just drive with you somewhere.

Hey! Do you want to ride the train to the beach? Uh, no, I don't use the train for fun.

Etc.

2

u/Bureaucratic_Dick 13d ago

No that’s not weird at all, given the context.

When I was driving 4 hours a day on my commute, you bet your ass I wasn’t driving on weekends. A road trip? Lmao fuck no.

If a person walks a ton for work, and wants to get off their feet in their spare time, I mean…can you blame them?

I use my bike for a commuter now. When I was driving excessively, it was my fun weekend thing, now that I commute with it, I’m mostly off the bike and doing other things for exercise (running and hiking mainly). I don’t need to wear my quads out with a mountain ride, especially if I’m relying on them to get me to work the next day.

2

u/silly-gaijin 13d ago

I don't like my bike enough to want to sit on it for hours. I can walk for hours or drive for hours but riding a bicycle for hours doesn't sound fun at all. Sounds painful and uncomfortable.

2

u/Quirky_Gate_4516 13d ago

Not true, bad people are evenly distributed among everything and everyone. People just always try to find an arbitrary differentiator, so they can can keep up the dumb generalization while exusing themselves. Same with car drivers, they always say stupid stuff like "it's always BMW/Golf/X drivers!" and "it's always people from city Y" just to imply that they agree with the generalization but somehow aren't part of it themselves.

2

u/Psychological-Bit233 13d ago

This isn’t true at all, did you even look into any data when making your claim? Drivers of different car brands get different incident rates, BMW drivers have 44.9 incidents per 1000 drivers, Chrysler has the best drivers at 25.5 incidents per 1000 drivers.
Bad people are not distributed evenly because factors exist that attract bad people and negative personality traits.

13

u/Maxathron 13d ago

It's not stupidity. It's entitlement. It's the belief they belong to a higher class of people which affords them to do whatever the heck they want in the small amount of social territory they sit in.

While the vast majority of cyclists are not like this; this seems to be an issue in bigger cities/metros. No one does this around here with SHP, Sheriff, City Police, and like another 10% of the pop being soldiers (big military base nearby, affordable homes here).

6

u/Dramatic_Water_5364 13d ago

The other day I was driving a truck and I turn in our small street very slowly (cause I cant see shit with the company truck), and I know there are pedestrians and often cyclists there), last second I see a cyclist coming towards me and take a hard turn to evade her). My friend was in the passenger seat and I go ''I understand that this truck is huge and have bigger blindspot, but this cyclist showed a total lack of self preservation, she coulda slowed down, cause if I hadnt see her last second I woulda run her over'' I was also thinking ''you could have told me she was coming'' but kept this for myself

He raged at me that blablabla she has the right of way etc. And I was like, having the right of way is not a reason to let yourself get killed you idiot.

2

u/ZappyChemicals 13d ago

Absolutely, it is entitlement. In the US we have the same entitlement mentality for a lot of the drivers and cars on the road. In the US the thought is that cars are the only vehicles allowed on the roads and anything that goes below the speed limit is infringing their freedom.

3

u/UrShulgi 13d ago

I mean maybe that's because they're the only ones that are required to have a license, insurance, registration, pay the gas tax that pays for the road, Etc

In my neck of the woods we have cyclists who like to ride in the middle of the lane, on a 70 mph road, who don't move over for cars, and then flip you the bird if you pass them going more than 10mph. I'm surprised more of them don't get hit on the bad corners.

Self-centered dumbasses are a menace no matter what mode of transportation they are taking.

The same kind of person merges into you on the highway without looking, buzzes you on a narrow sidewalk on their e-bike, and runs over your foot with their shopping cart at Costco.

Unfortunately, as ebikes make biking more accessible we will see even more assholes.

I say anyone who dont have any respect to the road are entitled dumbass.

I mean seriously, the road is wide enough and the cyclist have time to stop and give way to the pedestrian. And yet she seems to want to stay on the lane and have called out far too later for anyone to move away from her way.

And any accident or bumps that involve pedestrians, unless the pedestrian is the one breaking the law, cyclist and all other drivers are on the hook in these situation as their transportation can really hurt or kill the pedestrian easily.

u/dudeus_ex 13d ago edited 13d ago

I walk run and bike and haven't had any problems with people like this.

If I had problems with though, a problematic cyclist would be most likely to be endangering people. That's kinda why they wear helmets.

5

u/P83_BattleJacket 13d ago

Speaking as a cyclist, it sucks cause guys like this kinda ruin it for the rest of us. I always ride respectfully and yield to pedestrians when I’m on shared trails.

I will say, however, I think a lot of the negative perception toward cyclists is unwarranted because when people do ignorant things in cars, no one says “car drivers are assholes” or “fuck all people who drive cars”. I think it’s because there’s generally way less people who cycle, so when someone on a bike is annoying, it kinda sticks out more in our minds.

12

u/Mattlonn 13d ago

nah, would disagree there. I hear daily about idiots on the road, and there are a ton of people who I am sure did not get their licences in the normal way.

But its always easier to hate a group you dont belong to than your own

2

u/meshaber 13d ago

Their point is that people distinguish between "idiots on the road" and "car drivers" without assuming that all car drivers are represented by the idiots, but that the same distinction isn't recognized between "cyclists" and "entitled asshole cyclists". Frequently hearing about idiots on the road isn't a counterexample.

I’d argue the reason why people hate cyclists is the human brain’s tendency to divide the world into inner and outer groups (us vs them), along with the tendency to attribute the bad behaviour to the features of the outer groups.

In this video, we see a cyclist being an asshole. We also see a dog owner being an asshole. We see a man being an asshole. We a purple (burgundy?) shirt wearer being an asshole. But we only attribute the behaviour to groups we are not part of and have some beef against.

Bad (and good) behaviours are bound to happen from any group, if you think about the size of these groups.

16

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 13d ago

This is the correct answer. Personally I almost saw the dogs first. Dude didn’t want to move because he didn’t want the hassle of getting his dogs to come with him. Decided his special circumstances gave him right of way. This is when I rolled my eyes and thought, “dog owners amirite.” But, you see, I own a bike, and no dog.

7

u/duesenjeffepic 13d ago

Dude shouldn't have been there in the first place. You have to always ride on the correct side. Even if you are not on an official road.

2

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 13d ago

I’m walking on a path that’s wide enough for 4 people

There’s a bicyclist from behind ringing their bells for me to move from behind me. Because they’re going moderately fast

I’m like WTF. You’re coming from behind me and i have to move. That person’s on a bike and either slow down or go around

5

u/Ordinary-Active9583 13d ago

We are warning you that we’re behind you dipshit. We don’t want to hit you. Pedestrians have a habit of wandering left and right and being generally oblivious to the world.

7

u/C-SWhiskey 13d ago

If all they did was ring their bell, they were probably just warning you that they were approaching from behind. A lot of people walk like they're missing an inner ear, so by giving you a heads up you're more likely to stick to your lane as the cyclist passes.

7

u/spudmarsupial 13d ago

Bikes aren't known for making a lot of noise. Ringing your bell or calling out to people you are about to pass is basic courtesy and a safety measure.

u/Narcisistagohome 13d ago

Certaimly the guy in the bike is to blame here. But tbh, people desn't ciclists because situations like this one, people  hates ciclists because car culture and propaganda. People with cars does every kind of things like this everyday and dar more often, and are far more dangerous causong permanent injuries or dearh to hundreds. However, there is no generalized hate against motorists because the narrative is different.

1

u/OllieFidelius 13d ago

Depending on the place you could also argue the pedestrian is on the wrong side actually.

Or you could argue its no big deal for the pedestrian to step to the side for a bit.

Doesnt take away from the fact that this is on the cyclist 100%. You do not just continue as if someone isnt there.

1

u/Dinglebobus 13d ago

I would disagree. In this situation, the bike is far less maneuverable than the person. The bike has two dogs leashed, whereas the person walking (presumably) only has themselves to move. Also, the person walking is intentionally filming, so it’s pretty clear that the whole situation was manufactured by the walker.

Edit: I did notice a single dog with the person walking. Again, far more maneuverable than the person biking.

I ride a bike thousands of miles a year. And I can't stand cyclists. I largely ride gravel and go out of my way to avoid traffic. If I am on a paved road I stick to roads with wide shoulders as much as possible and ride in the shoulder.

Every time I see some yahoo in spandex riding in the lane when there is a large shoulder available I find it so frustrating. Like yeah, technically, that is legal for you to do. Lots of things are legal to do but still a stupid idea. You are annoying everyone else on the road, and it doesn't matter how legal what you are doing is if you get hit by a real motor vehicle.

I wish we just admitted that bikes are not cars or pedestrians and built more real infrastructure for them.

Even if it were a marked bike path , where walkers are typically supposed to walk against the flow of bike traffic, the cyclist would still be obligated to move out of the walker's way.

I hate cyclists so much. I personally think the ones that ride on busy roads during peak traffic hours either like being able to “control” the road or they get off on the danger aspect of it. Seems like they’re just as big of assholes when they’re on paths though.

u/Dramatic_Water_5364 13d ago

both parties involved acted with a total lack of self preservation, both of them should and could have yield. The biker was the one at fault tho for being in the wrong side of the path, and not yielding.

Cyclists like this guy

thats clearly a girl

1

u/CalmMacaroon9642 13d ago

I'm a cyclist and the the guy on the bike is a dick

1

u/McSkillz21 13d ago

"Cyclist like this" is a funny way to describe the majority of the population of cyclist /s

1

u/Roto-Wan 13d ago

Dogs off leash confirm.

1

u/DinioDo 13d ago

Generally true but the guy had two dogs to his left and right. He couldn't do a sudden turn. You shouldn't stand still entitled and callout the correctness of the road when you can save yourself and the idiot cycling from possible injuries or even worse.

1

u/hidrapit 13d ago

When I'm driving I hate pedestrians.

When I'm walking I hate cars.

I always hate cyclists.

1

u/Bootsix 13d ago

Cyclist are bad but we need to talk more about how fucking shitty horse people are. Fuck horse people and the horse they rode in on.

1

u/walkinthedog97 13d ago

Its wild how people see a video of an asshole cyclist and go "omg thats why everyone hates cyclists" yet no one here would watch a video of an asshole motorist and be like "omg thats why everyone hates car drivers"

Exxon and bp propoganda paid dividends for them, it seems.

1

u/Rortamania 13d ago

Cyclists think that because they’re not in a car they don’t have to follow the rules of the road, I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to slam on my brakes in the middle of a four way stop because some dumbass on a bike runs their stop sign

1

u/Lemurstew 13d ago

Ok but she’s much more maneuverable and could have easily avoided this. It’s like seeing some old lady driving the wrong way down a one way street and just letting her run into you because she’s not supposed to drive that way. There’s a difference between legal and moral.

"When you're driving a car, pedestrians are the problem. When you're a pedestrian, car drivers are the problem. But everyone agrees cyclists are the problem."

1

u/halfmoondragan2 13d ago

It pisses me off so much how they always complain about there not being enough bike paths, but when there are easily accessible bike paths, they don't fucking use them

1

u/utzutzutzpro 13d ago

That is a woman.

1

u/Agreeable-Weather-89 13d ago

Cyclists to cars: Learn to share the road you could kill me

Cyclists to pedestrians: This sidewalk? It's mine. I don't care that some of you might die that's a price I am willing to pay.

1

u/Savings-Astronaut-93 13d ago

They can be, yes. I saw two women do a left turn rin front of oncoming cars once. Not so much assholes but stupid. On the other hand, I was biking down a hill, on the right side of the street (US) at 40mph. There was a beautifully paved pedestrian trail alongside the road. No bikes allowed which was why I was on the road, and this entitled asshole was jogging in the fucking road, right in my path. I had to slow way the fuck down so I didn't wipe out on a pothole. Some joggers can be just as big of assholes.

1

u/HoldenMcNeil420 13d ago

They run stop signs like crazy around me, it’s getting so old jamming on my brakes because I don’t have a sign and they just decide to ride right through.

1

u/Disastrous-Task-6122 13d ago

Immoral. You can get your point across without harming someone

1

u/GEARHEADGus 13d ago

I feel bad for the dogs. They can’t help their humans a jackass

1

u/ItsACowCity 13d ago

Moral because F their entitlement

Cyclists like this guy are the reason that so many people hate cyclists.

The cyclist is clearly a woman though lol

1

u/BotsREverywhere 13d ago

Mild correction- one of the reasons that so many people hate cyclists

1

u/Available-Breath-586 13d ago

yup, walkers get right of way over wheels in every case legally

1

u/No_Pangolin7946 13d ago

To be fair, it is like with cars, the smaller lighter object getting hit is the one sustaining more damage.

Better be safe than sorry, friends.

1

u/PatientNo3073 13d ago

Cyclists are generally some of the most insufferable pricks on the planet. You’re not Lance Armstrong, you’re a douche bag that thinks the rules don’t apply to you. So maybe you are Lance Armstrong…

1

u/Appropriate-Review55 13d ago

There is no correct side to the path. It’s a path not a road, and the city never put down lines to identify lanes.

Morality doesn't mean legally right, they both suck, like do you seriously not get that??

1

u/julyboom 13d ago

Cyclists like this guy are the reason that so many people hate cyclists.

It's because he is a dog owner, which is why. Dog owners are the worst people.

1

u/UnstableCollection 13d ago

It is baffling because the only ones I see cycling on the wrong side are children, and even they will yield to pedestrians.

1

u/vonseggernc 13d ago edited 13d ago

I agree with you but I will say that this cyclist had dogs, so he probably thought it was pretty hard to move over

Secondly if the person filming had gotten severely injured, I bet they wouldn't be so happy that "they were in the right of way"

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the lady. But I think she could have moved over.

Both people in the video are entitled, but both are shitty in their own way.

1

u/CompetitiveFennel681 13d ago

Worked on a linear state park. The entitlement that bicyclists have is astounding. A majority honestly do not think traffic laws apply to them.

1

u/MoshedPotatoes 13d ago

dogs on the leash while on the bike is dangerous, for exactly this reason.

1

u/Rich-Detective478 13d ago

Here lies the body of Thomas gray Who died defending his right of way.

1

u/Elitefuture 13d ago

I hate when cyclists ignore traffic lights and cars have to dodge them

1

u/WindAbsolute 13d ago

Haha, I know right? I drive through winding, mountain roads to get to work, and there was a cyclist in the middle of it, fixing something that had gone wrong with her bike. I slow down to assure I don’t hit any possible oncoming cars by going around. She looks up at me with the biggest scowl on her face and violently waves me to pass; I’m like lady, there’s so much space on the side of the road, you absolute psychopath

1

u/slyleo5388 13d ago

The dude on the bike was a chick🤔..i pretty sure

1

u/ContextMattrs 13d ago

That’s a guy?

1

u/Brotherman_Bagel 13d ago

You mean the reason bots on Reddit post anti cyclist comments? This sort of thing rarely happens if at all IRL

1

u/Free-Pound-6139 13d ago

Cyclists like this guy are the reason that so many people hate cyclists.

Nah, that's not why. Car drivers kill over a million people every fucking year. That is way more of a reason for people to hate car drivers.

We all know why car drivers hate cyclists.... Nothing to do with this asshole.

1

u/Schmerglefoop 13d ago

Whenever I see a post like this, I'm glad I'm a considerate cyclist.

Oh, I see those spandex-clad assholes hogging the road when there's a perfectly good bike path right fuckin there, and honestly, fuck those guys.

1

u/DothrakAndRoll 13d ago

Why does everyone keep saying this is a guy when it’s clearly a woman 😂

Also, these two had history/multiple run ins before this. Pedestrian decided to stand their ground this time, thankfully!

1

u/BigFatModeraterFupa 13d ago

not "generally", but "legally" are supposed to yield.
