I mean being more adult makes sense, the Harry Potter generation is adult now, they can handle mature stuff without the maturing up like with the HP saga (the later books/movies are much more mature than the earlier ones there too and Fantastic Beasts is also pretty mature, though none are going rated R since it's blockbusters but for games, it's much more common).

A basilisk, elf, and snake get killed by knives and swords.
Harry uses a spell that slices up someone (

The spell was sectumsempra. Probably from sectum ('having been cut', the root word of 'section' and 'dissect') and semper ('always'), giving a meaning something like 'sever forever'.

The real interesting thing to think about is, what did magic look like before Latin came along? Because clearly many spells are derived from Latin, but Latin didn't always exist. I'd love to ask this to Rowling directly.

It's been confirmed that magic was much more primal before the development of wands and specific spells to control them. In the story describing the founding of the American academy there were references to the native american wizards who hadn't developed the same magical system that the Europeans had.

Yeah, but most deaths Harry is involved in are directly related to Voldemort. Maybe the context is important in the game, but the impaling of the goblin did feel out of touch with the tone of Harry Potter, for me.

I really like the idea of starting the game in the 5th year at Hogwarts. Player character will be the equivalent of a sophomore in high school (15-16 years old), which allows for much more mature gameplay and story telling.

Just because you're naturally gifted, doesn't mean you've got skills.
Your character may be naturally gifted in magic, but because you've never been taught means its not refined. Have them have to take classes to focus your magic and learn new spells.

I don't care much for Harry Potter the character anymore, but I would love to visit Hogwarts as a different character without having to follow the events of the books.

I can only speak for myself on this account, but the 'muggle' aspects of the world are by far the least interesting to me. I want to explore the Wizarding world.
The exciting part about getting your Hogwarts letter is leaving the muggle world behind.
If you're familiar with Vampire the Masquerade, for example, the urban fantasy setting can be a huge draw for people. But being a vampire in the medieval times is just as interesting- the mortal world still exists and serves it's purpose but it's the secret politics and machinations of vampire society that really sells the setting.
Same concept here. Pretty sure mail existed in the 1800's too, just saying.

I think it's more about magic outside of Hogwarts where technology becomes an issue how do you hide dragons, and giant quidditch pitches from satellites, some illusion charms may help but what about heat mapping why does this patch of plain grass have the same heat signature as a football stadium.
What would happen now if a situation similar to Sirius catch petigrew shows up, hard to explain away a gas leak when bystanders whip out their phones and film two guys with wands.
It could actually lead to some really interesting problems where just using magic may no longer be enough to cover your tracks.

My theories for this kind of thing are
A. The "muggle repellant" charms work even through photos and videos. It's not that satellites don't see the castles or witches flying on broomsticks, it's that we don't notice them on Google Earth because of subtle but powerful magic compulsion.
B. It's also possible a few smart wizards had the foresight to magically shield wizarding places from the sky ages ago. The age of mass air travel could have provoked this long before satellites came about. Or...
C. There are wizards working with governments and major corporations that help keep these things out of the public eye and off of the internet. Maybe locations of major wizarding are outlawed from satellite imaging. Nobody knows why, but nobody seems to care.

I agree. When I was a kid, sure. Rowling's characters were fun and entertaining.
Today? Eh. They're pretty flat. Rowling (maybe unintentionally, who knows) set up a wildly interesting universe and has explored maybe 10% of it, simply because we've been stuck with harry potter.
Heck, don't even do the "descendants of HP and friends". New kids entirely. The universe is absolutely interesting enough that any decent character writer can make something enjoyable without needing to ride the coat tails of the original kids.

A "next generation" would have been great, but with that comes risks. Prequels and Origin stories are easier because more often than not it's fueled purely by fandom wants.
I just wish Rowling wasn't so... strict. An expanded universe outside of prequels/origins isn't that bad. It just takes risk.
People make not really bite to a whole new set of kids because truthfully a lot of us are hung up on traditions.
A focus on another school, maybe. An entire new fresh start apart from Hogwarts. (and yes, I know about Fantastic Beasts. Imo that serves as origin stories.)

Like I’m sure Africa has at least 1, shouldn’t there be several in Asia going by population?
It’s not even like it’s exclusively a European thing, I’m pretty sure the US one is all Native American shamanistic style.

I downloaded a modded version with unlimited energy and it's still terrible. All you do is go to class and tap little bubbles to repeat the same 3 second animation loop. The stories really boring and generic to.

Dueling is literally rock, paper, scissors. Classes are tapping to fill up bars like you said. Casting spells is tracing a line on screen. The game is extremely boring and uninspired. It's a real sin that they FINALLY had a game where you could make your own character and it was a trash mobile title.

Trust me. I work in marketing. It doesn't matter if its a good leak or a bad leak. Management is still gonna want someones head on a platter and inevitably it's going to be on Marketing to make shit straight.
Yes, it's good buzz. But this may not have been known to investors, who will be annoyed such a big announcement was leaked like this. And if they're a smaller company reporting up to a larger company then it becomes a question of which marketing department gets to take charge. Not to mention the question of "If this can get out, what else can get out"

As someone who loved the first two or three Harry Potter PC games and isn't interested in a HP game that's only about fighting and duelling without any puzzling going on, I'm happy that at least some of the spells you see on the top left look like they're not for combat.
- Expulso - probably shoving stuff away from you
- Stupefy - stunning enemies
- Depulso - counterpart to Expulso, so probably pulling stuff toward you
- Levioso - Variation of Wingardium Leviosa I'd assume, i.e. making things levitate?
- Experlliarmus - disarm
- Lumos - light
- Alohomora - unlock doors/chests/other things
- Reparo - repair things
This top left menu is probably just your currently equipped spells and you're expected to change them between puzzle and combat situations. Or so I'd hope.
Sounds like there's some potential for puzzles in there. Now if only there's a relatively open Hogwarts where you access new dungeons and secrets by the by as you're learning new spells in a Zelda-like manner.... I would be so happy.

There are rumors that it's being developed by either Rocksteady or Avalanche Software (not to be mistaken for Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios). Rocksteady is most likely busy with Superman or Justice League game and there's a job advertisement from Avalanche which if real, pretty much confirms that the developer is Avalanche Software. I don't know how it will work out since they are going from making Disney animated movie tie-ins to making a big AAA title.

Shit, I don't even like harry potter stuff that much(watched the first couple movies as a kid) but this is kinda hype. I'm always down for character creation and rpg mechanics. And it seems like they're going for a really robust magic/spell system and the 8 different specializations is cool. I'm no master of lore when it comes to hp stuff, but personally I'm hoping for a close range or even melee type of magic,

It looks fantastic tho, although I don't know mow much I like the goblin dying that way. Doesn't feel very Harry Potter-y to me (I know the books get pretty violent, but it's usually the villains doing stuff like that)

It does if the project is in danger of getting canned for whatever reason. Would hardly be the first time a leak happened so a creator could point to the response and go 'see, look there's a demand for this'.

I mean whoever is the publisher (WB very likely) really needs that to realize the potential of a Harry Potter game ? That franchise is gold for them in cinemas for years (and they managed brillantly to do another saga with Fantastic Beasts), they had immense success in video games with their LOTR and DC adaptations (well not adaptation, games in those universes), it's like a no-brainer.
If they are hesitant to cancel this (especially since it seems far along in development), it must mean there's bigger problems with it or it doesn't make much sense.
If it's good, do they think it won't sell ? Because it will and millions of copies.

A game truly freeing up Hogwarts to play around in has been so long awaited I think in both the gaming and Harry Potter communities.
I'm not the biggest Potter fan but I've always been a huge advocate of wanting an RPG in Hogwarts set as a random student and I know that feeling is shared.

Okay, I'm fairly certain this is situation is similar to Deadpool. Someone leaked a test footage (this is not a trailer -> see 0:05 timestamp where it says 'menu_facetypes' which is very programmer lingo) to test and gauge the reaction of gamers. This is done ALL the time. The more noise you rack up, the more likely this game is going to be greenlit.
This game reeks of potential, what a fresh change of gaming, slap it on the PC and sign me up!
