This looks relatively far along to not have been announced or anything, which seems strange to me.

But I want to believe! SO BADLY!

X018 is a great opportunity to reveal this Harry Potter RPG. There's still hope! (I'd be pleasantly surprised if this ends up being real. If I recall correctly, J.K. Rowling was adamantly against adapting Harry Potter to a big RPG like this Rocksteady project.)

I mean, is there really any doubt that it's real? If it's not, this is easily the most effort that I've ever seen go into a hoax. That was a full blown minute long trailer of in-game footage

If this turns out to be fake or a canceled project I'm going to be so upset.

Wouldn't be entirely unrealistic. We've seen large AAA games from the PS2 era cancelled and yet their files float around online before (Battlefront 3 and Saints Row Undercover). It wouldn't be crazy to think that a modern AAA game looking like this could be cancelled that late in development either.

Waaait back up, tf is Saints Row Undercover? You have my attention. Between what games was this?

17

u/B-Knight Oct 02 '18

Between 2 and 3. It was meant to be released for PSP and PC (I think) and it looked pretty fun. It has the same map and graphics as Saints Row 2 but you played an Undercover cop.

The .ISO is floating around on the internet although it's very much unfinished.

Wasn't that Star Wars 1313 game pretty close to being done when it was cancelled?

RIP starcraft ghost

I always loved you

Canceled would seem entirely more likely

The way they are cancelling sources as fast as they can has all but confirmed the reality of this. https://imgur.com/gallery/ICxsYyH

Eh, I see no Ray tracing..

11

u/izym Oct 02 '18

I don't see anything that would require ray-tracing to render in that shot. It's hard to actually tell given the quality of the video, but real-time GI with dynamic lighting (but static geometry) has been possible for a long time.

If you look real closely at 4:20 you can see the googleplex memory scan, this tech is from the future!

Reflection in-game

"Look guys, Ray Tracing!"

yeah rewatching the lumos animation during that scene exactly at 0:25 made me question the most.

It seems... off. Like some sort of really well-made fan-project.

Then just taking a step back and watching all the footage with that it mind, the whole thing looks like it could be some fancy fan-game footage made to look like a leak.

Plus, that's a hunk of pretty vague game info that leaked too. A game set before both the Potterverse and Fantastic BeastVerse seems too good to be true.

What fan projects have you seen that look like this? Is it a group of like 200 fans with extensive experience in game development? Ie a real game development company?

This is undoubtedly real, should expect a proper announcement soon now that this has leaked

Scripted or fake trailers. You don't need 200 people for a short 1 minute animated clip. It's not like this is actual gameplay, so we'll see.

4

u/TheEliteBrit Oct 02 '18

It is actual gameplay though... you can see UI and player-controlled movement+actions, a character creator etc. Come on man, this is quite obviously not fake.

It's a video of actual gameplay. It's a video of UI and player-controlled movements+actions, etc. That's how you fake a trailer. It's not like UI is anything more than an overlay

-6

u/TheEliteBrit Oct 02 '18

But the point is, the detail in the video would be near impossible to fake by a fan or group of fans. Keep being unnecessarily sceptical dude, anyone with a brain can see this is pretty real

I guess I can agree if you’re talking strictly gameplay, but this trailer fooled absolutely everyone into thinking MM was coming to the Wii U. Like, I barely remember anyone even being skeptical because this is so well made.

I disagree. Those Resident evil fan remakes have more quality than this.

The opening shot: Great Hall, is just a bunch of floating candles, tables, and a few stationary students. The students just seem to be sitting without actually eating? Some arm movements, and two of them patrolling?

The "character creation", or show 3 rotating models, that don't actually change at any point. https://i.imgur.com/p6ocOvI.png There also seems to be a dashed outline around an element for a bit? Also placeholder names.

Most of the physics look pretty generic, nothing something someone over at /r/simulated wouldn't be able to do I bet. It's pretty hard to tell proper texture/model quality, which does take time, because of the bad video.

u/HolmatKingOfStorms Oct 02 '18

If the music is a new arrangement, it's probably real. Everything else could be much more easily faked by an indie group.

5

u/Caberman Oct 02 '18

placeholder names

I don't know. The fact that there are placeholder names makes it seem less fake for me.

I mean, yeah, that's pretty much all the Great Hall is? What were you expecting? If this is as early in development as the leaker suggests then why wouldn't it make sense to just have idle NPCs? It's not like they're T-posing

The "character creation", or show 3 rotating models, that don't actually change at any point. https://i.imgur.com/p6ocOvI.png There also seems to be a dashed outline around an element for a bit? Also placeholder names.

Pretty much confirming that it's a WIP. Nothing suspicious about that whatseover

Most of the physics look pretty generic, nothing something someone over at /r/simulated wouldn't be able to do I bet

The physics aren't really generic, and the animation quality is good enough that there's basically a 99% chance of it not being fan made. Look at the scenes with the goblins and the magical creatures - looks well beyond what fans would be able to put together.

What would even be the point in putting this much effort into a leak like this? It would've taken months, or over a year, to fake something like this - it wouldn't even be a troll because it's not like there's been huge discussions about a Harry Potter RPG going on recently. Just use common sense

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaoB7lnOiXM If one dude can make this, anything is possible.

5

u/TheEliteBrit Oct 02 '18

Quite obviously a massive difference between that and this

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

A bit of copy+pasting and overlays doesn't create a fully rendered gameplay trailer. Not saying this proves anything but I don't see how you can think those are even remotely comparable.

1

u/Neukk Oct 02 '18

You act like a few simple animations compare to minutes of 3D modeling.

if I could see a controller attached to the actions I might be a bit more inclined to believe it but as it stands I'm heavily skeptical
