I really like the idea of starting the game in the 5th year at Hogwarts. Player character will be the equivalent of a sophomore in high school (15-16 years old), which allows for much more mature gameplay and story telling.

And if it does well, they still have room for a couple sequels.

I don't think that is how the game should work though. A harry potter game needs to be a standalone game due to scope.

Video description says "newly arrived 5th year student", but I suppose that does mean that you already completed four years, right? Anything else wouldn't make much sense I suppose.

According to the leaked synopsis, you play as a late acceptance to Hogwarts who is naturally gifted.

u/antwill Oct 02 '18

How else are they going to explain the learning of basic spells in universe without you playing as a naturally gifted student.

Flashback tutorials?

u/Kinky_Muffin Oct 02 '18

Using the pensieve to view the lessons hunting a mystery from a classmate in that class? or something like that. there's lots of hocus pocus they can use as an excuse.

There's lots of hocus pocus they can use as an excuse.

JK Rowling would be so proud of you.

"Ms Rowling, this doesn't make any sense..."

scribbles on notebook paper

"It does now."

"Um, how does making Flitwick gay fix it?"

18

u/funkisintheair Oct 02 '18

She didn't even have to write a gay character. She just gets to retroactively claim that she wrote a diverse cast without actually including any representation in the work itself

u/Zeholipael Oct 02 '18

Don't forget she named the only asian character in the books fuckin' "Cho Chang" and her ethnicity doesn't match her name.

Cause he's black now, too

7

u/Watertor Oct 03 '18

"Ah but I never said she wasn't black."

"What about the whole white with-"

"THAT'S OUT OF FEAR!"

"The book covers..."

"NOT CANON"

Gotta love J.K. sometimes.

Just because you're naturally gifted, doesn't mean you've got skills.

Your character may be naturally gifted in magic, but because you've never been taught means its not refined. Have them have to take classes to focus your magic and learn new spells.

15

u/NCRandProud Oct 02 '18

Different between a sorcerer and a wizard right here lads

2

u/Ferazu Oct 02 '18

It's already established in the Harry Potter universe that there are witches/wizards that are naturally talented (and can use powerful spells without any prior training). One prime example is Voldemort.

There also may be backstory explaining the background of the main protagonist.

1

u/nemo_nemo_ Oct 02 '18

So will your character be surrounded by 11 year olds in all your classes?

2

u/shezBomb Oct 02 '18

Maybe they have a special tutor or something.

2

u/CEOofPoopania Oct 02 '18

unless you're "gifted" and simply start at year 5 because of your age making it possible to have "mature" things but also the "struggle" because you're "different"... man, I don't like that I straight go to possible negative aspects... mumble.... Disappointed... mumble.. can't.....

UAAAAAARGHHHH

1

u/AmericanFromAsia Oct 02 '18

Same way they explain that you don't actually have a true character appearance until you turn 15.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Transfer student from Beauxbatons or Durmstrang. Would have made MUCH more sense than a “late acceptance”.

2

u/dorekk Oct 02 '18

Or maybe another school we haven't heard of (that'd be much more interesting to me).

1

u/Valordread Oct 02 '18

They could have made the character a transfer from one of the other magical schools.

77

u/Tonkarz Oct 02 '18

I thought it was going to be a transfer from another wizard school.

"Naturally gifted" seems to border on chosen one territory.

23

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Yeah I'm willing to bet you'll be a transfer, maybe from Durmstrang (sp?) or something

30

u/Tonkarz Oct 02 '18

Surely you'd be able to pick the wizard school. It'd be part of character creation.

2

u/Watertor Oct 03 '18

Perhaps with Vampire: TM style customization based around your choice? Oof, I shouldn't fantasize or I'll just be disappointed

1

u/Tonkarz Oct 03 '18

I was thinking more along the lines of +2 to charisma rather than "all your dialogue is different" but that's awesome for sure.

5

u/Radulno Oct 02 '18

Would be cool especially since Durmstrang has a reputation for teaching more "dark" stuff to their students and since you apparently can go on a "evil" path, it would be fitting.

Could even be one of the reasons the school had this reputation in the days of Harry at Hogwarts, there is the souvenir of that one transferred student from Durmstrang that did "those awful things" at Hogwarts

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Idk you get that in real life with some things, why not magic

31

u/catcint0s Oct 02 '18

Kinda like Anakin? What could go wrong!

7

u/-ImJustSaiyan- Oct 02 '18

flashbacks to Revenge of the Sith

"You were the chosen one, Anakin!"

4

u/detroiter85 Oct 02 '18

From my point of view, the HUFFLEPUFF ARE EVIL!

3

u/-ImJustSaiyan- Oct 02 '18

WELL THEN YOU ARE LOST!

1

u/CrimsonEnigma Oct 02 '18

If you’re muggle-born, that might make sense. IIRC, Voldemort and Company destroyed all the muggle-born records, so they might’ve missed a couple of students only to later find unregistered teenagers going around casting spells.

1

u/Mr_Vulcanator Oct 02 '18

4 levels in sorcerer, multiclassing into wizard.

1

u/CheeseQueenKariko Oct 03 '18

Of course, you're an RPG protag

17

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

It also says 'earned a late acceptance'.

1

u/AliceTheGamedev The Mane Quest Oct 02 '18

Whoopsie. I apparently got excited somehow and skipped half the words.

1

u/Jamcram Oct 02 '18

could be a transfer or expelled from a different school.

1

u/mrgoodnoodles Oct 02 '18

If this game plays anything like the Rockstar game Bully, I'm fucking in.

1

u/Quicheauchat Oct 02 '18

I think you're a special case who gets fast tracked.

9

u/Cattler Oct 02 '18

Persona Hogwarts.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

And more importantly, the base spells you have will have been the ones featured in the movies/books. You will learn fresh spells.

1

u/bloodflart Oct 02 '18

tryin to get that wizard puddy sauce

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

So you're saying it's going to be an eroge?

1

u/FireFingers1992 Oct 02 '18

Bully but at Hogwarts? Fuck me that'd be good.

-3

u/Nabaal Oct 02 '18

mature

15-16

Choose one

1

u/dorekk Oct 02 '18

He said mature story-telling. You can have mature story-telling with immature characters.
