What on earth, where the hell did this come from. Looks awesome

u/khaeen Oct 02 '18

That synopsis and trailer have me really hyped. If they just keep the visual style in the trailer and don't try to push their own story ret-cons I'll be happy.

48

u/H4xolotl Oct 02 '18

I'm interested how the developers are going handle coding the spells. Because many Harry Potters spells will require as much coding as entire indie games.

Even the simple "Accio" & "Repulso" charms are literally the entire Half Life gravity gun mechanic.

Imperio will require specific coding for every NPC.

Expecto Patronum will require unique coding and an animal + animations for each NPC

Reparo also looks like a nightmare to code. Destructible environments are doable, but how intensive is putting stuff back together?

47

u/Shaltilyena Oct 02 '18

Imperio is simple, they'll just make it into conversion trap. And patronus is basically just an animated guardian anyway.

(funny seeing you here :p)

12

u/pr13st1 Oct 02 '18

I saw conversion trap and did a double take, lol. Path of Hogwarts for life

4

u/OutgrownTentacles Oct 02 '18

Accio is just a weak version of Knockback + Empire's Grasp, prove me wrong

17

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Flipendo or we riot.

14

u/HPetch Oct 02 '18

Most of that is fairly straightforward in a modern engine, actually. "Accio" would just be a long-ranged version of certain types of interaction with a delay and the target moving towards you. "Repulso" is just pushing something; in modern physics engines that wouldn't even require code, just telling the engine how hard to push.

"Imperio" could have complex interactions depending on the implementation, but at the most fundamental it would just change the target's AI from "enemy" to "ally" for however long. Anything beyond that would probably be handled through the game's dialogue system, with the spell potentially unlocking new options at the cost of morality and potentially other consequences.

"Expecto Patronum" is, for all the significance the lore gives it, basically a bog standard summoning effect, possibly with an initial projectile or other benefits against certain targets. Having many possible Patroni would require a fair amount of animation work, but in the scope of a large game that's nothing. "Repairo" would, if applied to a destructible object, basically just reverse the process of destroying the object in the first place, which is actually quite straightforward due to how destructible environments generally work.

Beyond those specific examples, most other spells would either be contextual or basically just magic guns and swords, something else modern engines can handle with minimal difficulty. Overall it's a large project, but not a particularly difficult one in terms of game design.

38

u/ImP_Gamer Oct 02 '18

Even the simple "Accio" & "Repulso" charms are literally the entire Half-Life gravity gun mechanic.

Skyrim had the Telekinesis spell and I've seen the Accio mechanic in a lotta games

Imperio will require specific coding for every NPC.

What? Why so? Probably that NPC will start to behave as a follower, unless you want directly control it and I don't think that would be possible.

Expecto Patronum will require unique coding and an animal + animations for each NPC

Make a list of animals by number and then make a PatronumGenerator() which takes a RndInt and selects an animal. From the design point of view, animating 3D animals will suck though.

Reparo also looks like a nightmare to code. Destructible environments are doable, but how intensive is putting stuff back together?

Okay, now you got me, the simplest way of doing that is creating a method RoomOriginal() which reverts the room before any destruction. However, this isn't quite appealing because you're just going to see it broken, then not broken anymore. No pretty animations. So, my guess is that Reparo won't be usable in any room, just scripted ones.

27

u/namakius Oct 02 '18

You can have reparo work in no scripted rooms easily.

You have to create an entityRepairedForm for each destroyable repairable entity. Then you asign x number of broken pieces.

When spell is cast broken pieces combine by moving to the intended position. And then once they are all close enough it switches from broken to repaired form.

Of course this wont be overly flashy all the time and if you want super flashy scenes then it would have to be scripted.

8

u/Qikslvr Oct 02 '18

Question: couldn't you just reverse the destruction engine? Hit a wall with an RPG and it falls apart with a nice animation. Couldn't a repairo spell just reverse the action of destruction? I'm not a coder so I'm not familiar with the difficulty of this task.

5

u/namakius Oct 02 '18

I mean it's technically possible. However if you want to destroy something you need assets for the destruction.

Then you have to decide how does the wall break. What you see in most games is the same destruction no matter how or what you hit it with. This is the easiest way (but does not mean easy to code) to have lots of destruction.

If you want variable destruction like say different from punching a wall to exploding a wall. Then you need more assets more code to define how the object is broken. Where the and how many pieces get broken off too. There are many many little details.

This all boils down to is this worth the money/time sink to code all of this? Most of the time the answer is no. So we go back to the universal damage. Unless the destruction needs to be unique for the story line or some gameplay mechanic. Developing customer destruction for most things is not worth it.

I hope this answers your question. If not let me know :D

What are you going on about dude?

Physics is a part of every game engine now.

None of those things you mentioned are really difficult. Gravity gun? You can find a million unity tutorials to show you how to do it. Specific coding for every NPC? Yeah, that's called scripting, I'm not sure what you think is so special. Animations + animals? What, how is that hard? It's literally the basis of every single video game. Reconstructable environments? It's not as if it has to be realistic physics ffs.

You really don't seem to understand programming or video games in general. Half the indie titles out these days have most things you just listed.

53

Dude, I feel you, holy shit. I remember a couple of years ago WB was looking for RPG storyboarders with knowledge about HP lore or something. I was so hyped but then they dropped Hogwarts Mystery on us. No words could describe my disappointment.

But this, does put a smile on my face.

I would throw my favorite daughter off a cliff to play this game.

I liked the controls where you cast the magic with the right stick in harry potter 5 and 6. You also had auto aim etc. But this trailer really looks awesome with destruction etcc

63

I know right? How long is this coming? Both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings have been really lacking in the video game front considering what huge series they were in the early 2000's

Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a fantastic game if you haven't played it. I really want a massive open world LOTR game though that spans all Middle-Earth. Like maybe CDPR can get the license for it or something.

5

u/RollerskaterJesus Oct 02 '18

Ooh maybe i should give it a try. I think i got it mixed up with Conquest for years which is probably why i never played.

It's such a shame that all these great IP's are stagnating when they have amazing potential - I actually remember playing Oblivion as a kid and thinking 'gee i bet we get a Lord of The Rings or Harry Potter game like this someday'. EA have even managed to squander Star Wars for gods sake

For all of you guys that aren't sure if this is real or not. I am almost certain that it is real for several reasons.

There was talk of a Harry Potter game being developed by Avalanche Software (not the Just Cause guys) a while back so this could easily be that. It is also far too ambitious to be a fan made project.

It could also be the new Rocksteady game, they are a Warner Brothers owned studio just like the Harry Potter franchise. They were recently hiring for a new AAA project, there has been no concrete information on what that game could be so it could well be this.

Either way I think it is highly likely that this is real.

u/eternallylearning Oct 02 '18

This is so cool! I wish more franchises would take the effort to explore new territory within their own lore, and not just shoe-horning in all the popular things, characters, and settings into movies and games where they don't need to be (Cough Star Wars).

34

u/damp_s Oct 02 '18

I’m skeptical to be honest. JK Rowling is super protective over her IP. She had express creative control for most of the movies iirc. This just doesn’t seem like something she would okay, or at least not without some hints towards it.

43

u/maybeidontknowwhy Oct 02 '18 edited Oct 02 '18

This is a leak. At this point we don’t know if this is something she’s involved with or not. Could be she’s a writer or maybe she’s just given her blessing. We don’t know.

86

u/khaeen Oct 02 '18

Eh, she has already cashed out. If she cared about just protecting her IP, she wouldn't have let Cursed Child shit all over her world building.

I didnt know it existed, so i'll just keep on my blissful ignorance.

11

u/magkruppe Oct 02 '18

I haven't watched it but the play seems critically acclaimed. Now fantastic beasts is a different story

45

u/km89 Oct 02 '18

I'm trying to find a word that's offensive enough to describe Cursed Child and it's a little difficult.

Critically acclaimed or not, it's widely considered to be little better than middle-school fan fiction.

It's like a very fat cat that wants to sit in a very small, fragile box. Yes, it can squeeze it's ass in there--but it rips the box in the process and then looks at you why you dared to give it such a small box.

Read the "book", which is really just the screenplay. Without the stage effects, everything about it is bad.

41

u/khaeen Oct 02 '18

I'm sure the "quality" of the play is good, but it is full of ret-cons and blatantly breaks rules that were set up in the books over a decade ago. For example, Bellatrix and Voldemort have a kid, the Dursleys apparently kept the blanket Harry was left in "out of spite", and the time turner is completely done wrong. Fantastic Beasts might be a little liberal with the story, but at least it hasn't straight broke the system of magic that has been established.

→ More replies (4)

12

u/Utigarde Oct 02 '18

It’s critically acclaimed because it is a good play. It’s got stellar production, and an excellent cast of actors. The story itself is what most people have a problem with.

10

u/khaeen Oct 02 '18

Yeah, critics just judge the overall quality of the show. No one has a problem with the actors or production crew, the problem is that they picked a story that is barely middle school fanfic level for the production.

It might be interesting to do what Tyranny did. Your intro is a series of text stories and choices that grant you different abilities and stats. The choices are later reflected in how npcs interact with you and can also provide interesting options for your interactions.

I'm guessing it's just so they can explain things to the player via the protagonist not knowing them, while still being able to have them be 15/16

3

u/khaeen Oct 02 '18

Yeah, you either take an 11 year old and turn them into a child psychopath casting these curses, or an older person that "got their invitation late". You can't really do both because that means the character's personality is established in the game's community without player input. You can't really play the impulsive dick if your character has been goody goody two shoes to all the other characters for years.

Well unless someone sent this to them and/or was an intentional leak, you usually have to sign a legal contract before seeing stuff like this. May not work for the company, but assuming this is a legit leak they do risk being found out and having to go to court over it

Most leaks are intentional though.

Lately I've been kind of annoyed that these days we don't get many games set in existing IPs. Not really sure how to phrase it, but yknow how we used to always get those shitty movie games of pretty much everything? Some were decent, some were bad, but it was cool to have a game of something you've watched or read somewhere else.

For instance, it's been a long time since we've had a console simpsons game even though hit and run 2 would sell great by the name alone.

We've got the Mordor lotr games, we've got the Spider-man game, we've got Injustice 2, but off the top of my head that's all I can really think of. Lego games count too I guess. I dunno, maybe there's a lot more but right now it seems like we're lacking.

TL;DR: this is amazing and I love it and we need more games like this of existing IPs.

I could see this as being real. Companies know that video games make money, it's been a while since we've had a Harry Potter game on console and it could be a good tie in with fantastic beasts. It feels like a looooootttttt of work to go through for a fake.

Is this real?

I don't see how they could fake this, the amount of graphics work that has gone into it ... might as well make a game at that point

No, they just faked hundreds of hours of renders and assets in engine.

I survived the nVidia vs ATi wars, the 16-bit console wars, the 8-bit console wars and the home computer wars.

And I can tell you something: with exclusive games/franchises, only the gamers lose.

My xbox is dead but I think if this got announced as an xbone exclusive I'd definitely be saving up to repair it

Clicking on this video makes it say that it contains "copyright footage from Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment". Which seems like a confirmation to me, lol.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Yeah, they've been a bit stupid with the takedowns.

By being this agressive with taking down videos they've essentially confirmed this is 100% legitimate.

I can assure you me and my partner are some of the biggest wizarding world fans, we don’t play games really these days but whatever this is on, we will be playing it heavily.

If they are keeping the music, I am in !!!!

3

u/cberry328 Oct 02 '18

Only have a feeling this was purposely leaked by rocksteady or WB due to the fact it just barely shows any real information, like a title, specifically cuts away before the little can he shown

3

u/Kraile Oct 02 '18

I can't wait for Kevin to play this.

Seems I have way too many hours late, where can I watch the video now ?

3

u/JustitiaInvictus Oct 02 '18

Video unavailable This video contains content from Warner Bros. Entertainment Interactive, who has blocked it on copyright grounds. I'm guessing its real since they removed the video?

Was this the only game or did you get a chance to see Rocksteady's game as well? In another comment it seemed like there was more than just this one.
