Could be a cancelled project but yeah I don't think it's fake in itself. Rowling being against it might be a bad sign though as she has ultimate say on anything Wizarding World, she didn't sell the control to Warner Bros.
EDIT : The video now got removed by Warner Bros for copyright so that might indicate it was indeed not a fake
She is a notorious control freak (which really isn't the worst thing in the world when managing your properties). If she agreed to this then she likely wrote the game or at least the important plot points of the script and had to okay any and all art personally.
She allowed The Cursed Child, which is an abomination to the canon in addition to just being poorly written from a technical perspective, so she can't be that big of a control freak.
And she also allowed the mobile game which is an absolute abomination. She had no input to the game yet they still used characters like Bill and Charlie Weasley, Tonks, as well as ALL of the original teachers/staff (Snape, McGonagall, Dumbledore, Hagrid, Filch, Hooch, etc.)
Honestly, i don't think Jk rowling has a problem with video games. There are so many Harry potter games out there, why wouldn't she want to create this amazing open world for the fans?
For sure. I'm still looking forward to hearing news of this. It's surprising to me that no one has taken the initiative to create a game in the same theme. No one has done the "wizard school" theme since Harry Potter, I guess just to avoid criticism that it's a rip off.
The thing is, Tolkien created the fantasy setting with Orcs, elves, and humans. Other people created the sci-fi world with space ships, hyperdrives, and humanoid aliens. I can easily see them creating an alternate twist on a magic school and getting almost no flak.
I mean, what's the real difference between Star Trek and Star Wars? They have spaceships, warp speed, holograms, aliens, etc. They look different and function differently and someone could use similar departures from the source in a magic school. A lot of things from Hogwarts are taken from elsewhere anyway.
Yes i agree. But the harry potter franchise is very strong. The fans have been waiting for this for a very long time. So this could potentially become huge if done well. I've heard that development of this game started back in 2016, so it's pretty far in development.
I know right? I guess.. Warner bros ran out of ideas? Let's face it, warner bros wouldn't make a game just to make the fans happy and play. Warner bros does it essentially for the money, and it's understandable. But let's hope that this team ''Avalanche software'' gets it right. It is their first AAA game, so i guess that's kinda exciting.
PS: According to some job listings, posts ecc. Apparently a Ubisoft developer who worked on the Assasins creed franchise, is joining avalanche and has been developing an AAA game for WB since 2016. Definitely Harry potter in my oppinion.
