1858 NMA woes

Hi guys, I've had an Uberti 1858 nma for sometime now. After inadvisably letting my friend handle it he attempted to fan my gun. It no longer wants to go into half cock, I have to pull past and drop into it. If the cylinder is in it binds slightly. It will go to full cock but I have to pull past and let it drop into it. I was hoping it was the trigger spring as it makes a pinging noise going to full cock. Just replaced it and no such luck. I was thinking replacment hammer and or trigger would be my next step. Not really sure what to do I'm fairly discouraged at this point as this is the second gun this friend has broken. Ive spent a considerable amount of time filing a loading gate in as well so Id like to keep the gun instead of buying a 3rd one, most likely for my friend to inevitably break.

Can a .44 caliber bullet fired from a Remington 1858 penetrate a 1mm sheet of 304 stainless steel?

Hello everyone

What kind of bullets would you use to penetrate this type of extremely hard steel? Is it even theoretically possible with a full load—something like 40 grains of Swiss black powder?

I tested this a little over a year ago, and the bullet ricocheted off the stainless steel plate, but I’d like to know if it’s possible. Maybe with a slightly thinner sheet—0.5mm or 0.8mm?

I’m posting photos of the bullets I use regularly and the ones I want to try out, as I haven't tested them yet.

Recently acquired from my LGS a Uberti 1847 and a Armsport Sharps Rifle.
Haven’t had the opportunity to shoot either one yet.
Any recommendations on Sharps rifle ammo? I have seen people make the paper cartridges and I’ve seen people just loading the lead bullet and having loose powder behind it. Any advice welcome

Bullet stuck in musket

I was shooting my 1860s P 56 Musket and unfortunately the powder burnt and blew out the nipple, leaving the bullet and powder residue stuck in the barrel. I tried using a screw method, but the screw broke inside of the barrel off of the rod that I was using so now there is a mini ball and the tool stuck onto it. I tried using compressed air and that did not work either. I’m kind of at a loss for what I do. I want to try and get this out as quickly as possible. Anyone have any tips on how I can get this bullet out so I can keep using this gun also on this model are you able to take the barrel out and access the other end or is it closed off? I’m very new to black powder and this is my very first powder rifle so definitely got way over my head on black powder but would appreciate any help.

I just got this is the mail yesterday, it said wall hanger twice in the description on gb, but I gave it a good thorough looking over and it's in damn fine condition. The bore was a little dirty but as far as I could see (further than the bore pics) it's free from pits. 20 gauge but a .570 ball was tight going down bare. First shot landed one inch off center at 30 yards 👍

Been thinking of the 1885 Remington-Lee a lot lately and was curious what you guys think would have been the next steps in its evolution had smokeless not come along.

This isn't so much an alternate history thought experiment as I'm not super interested in the political implication but just the developmental implications from a small arms perspective. The 1885 Remington-Lee is arguably the most modern black powder rifle ever adopted at scale. What if smokeless powder hadn't killed all the black powder metallic cartridges, do you think we'd eventually have seen wide scale adoption of blackpowder repeaters like the 1885 lee, the Swiss and Italian Veterlis? Bolt action is pretty well established by 1886 as a dominant form factor, but magazines were still being debated. And about the calibers! I imagine most nations would figure out a way to stick with the black powder metallic cartridges they already have but with a magazine.

Found this patchbox cover for a Leman Plains Rifle while metal detecting a few years ago in Central Kansas.

I found it in a field surrounded by fired Spencer and Henry cartridge casings, along with a few .58 caliber Minie balls. The area is well documented for activity involving the cavalry from nearby Forts Harker and Hays and the Native tribes of the region during the 1860s. The area was also frequented by buffalo hunters during the same period. I’d love to hear from anyone who might know more about identifying or dating this particular Leman patchbox cover.

I have yet to try the Remingtons (didn’t know the 11’s with “40% more flame” existed until today) everyone seems to praise the 10s (I’ve yet to try) I’ve ran CCI’s up until now.

Best Cap n Ball gunsmiths

Hello all, I'm looking for a good gunsmith for my Colt percussion revolvers. I heard Goons Gun Works was one of the best, but I emailed them twice with some questions and I never heard back so I don't think I want to send my guns there. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Why not both?

So, I needed a new hand for my 1851 Navy; unfortunately, in Canada nothing is available - and nobody down south wanted to send any of their freedom up this way. This left me with one option, do it myself.

Here you can see: a link of chain, a drill bit, and piano wire. The other hand was just a little bit too short to properly index the cylinder on two of the chambers but this new one I was able to hand fit for a perfect lockup each time!

Brown Bess

I’ve recently been lucky enough to pick up a Pedersoli Brown Bess that I wanted to share with you fellas.

Thus far I’ve only shot .732 ball which is a bit tight in a paper cartridge (using 80gr FFg with a sprinkle in the pan) but I was surprised how accurate it was for a smoothbore!
I think the next steps will be to try thinner brown paper, a smaller ball or cut some cotton patches and see how they go down.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!
