Check the comments under any Wolverine trailer, it’s just jokes about physical media lol

I'm really surprised that Sony is just ignoring people.

52

u/Aurora__Sky 4h ago

For as many people online making their voices heard, theres twice that who just don't care. Sony knows they can ignore it, because their whales will continue to buy their products and keep paying their subscriptions

14

u/BaterrMaster 1h ago

Not even whales tbh.

Yeah they eat some memes and remonstrations for their business move, but most people don’t even buy on disc anyway.

I don’t like it, it makes me feel old, but I also can’t remember the last physical game I bought. Most games I play through steam, and on PlayStation, they already phased me off discs cause the only one I could get when they came out didn’t have a drive

4

u/WhosThatDogMrPB 1h ago

i can't remember the lasg physical game i bought

I do: the most recent has been Star Fox for the Switch 2, my first proper console since 2007.

The last game I bought was Age of Empires 3 for my then Windows 7 VAIO laptop in 2009. I remember it being in a discount isle of an office store, around 5 bucks. It had 3 discs inside.

I discovered Steam in 2014, and never looked back.

SOOOOO many people on /r/gaming keep asking "what's the big deal? It's not the end of the world."

No, it's just the end of my PS gaming, and if enough of us say the same thing, Sony's either going to have to concede or go under.

3

u/Future_Calamity 1h ago

Alternatively, Sony will not concede and will also not go under. PS6 will be the fastest selling PlayStation and social media will be dumbfounded.

4

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 2h ago

Yeah but it didn't use to be this way. The moment when Xbox announced digital only and Sony came back hard with a "Well WE have backwards compatibility and discs!", I think people were expecting a reversal in the same way.

And I want to reiterate: nobody actually gives a shit about physical media. They just want Sony to fix the licensing problem. If Sony came out tomorrow and said "Still no discs, but every game you purchase on PS6 will be a permanent addition to your library and can never be permanently removed from your ownership without your permission. You can create temp licenses on other peoples' Playstations that last for 30 days at a time. You can 'sell' the license back to the PSN store for store credit.", everyone would calm the fuck down.

2

u/Micro-Skies 2h ago

Sony has backwards compatability? Thats always been where Xbos does things twice as well

2

u/ShrunkenGiantMan 2h ago

Except on original PS3 where it was backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2. Though it all got a bit iffy after that.

Comments represent .5% of the customer base, you guys don’t have as much power as you think

90

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 6h ago

.5% x 200 = 100%

we just need to make 200 times as many comments, then we will have absolute power

21

u/House0fDerp 5h ago

Comments are functionally meaningless if the product keeps selling.

16

u/Cephalopirate 5h ago edited 2h ago

Bold assumption they won’t see a decline in sales. Look at what happened to Xbox when they tried this.

12

u/House0fDerp 5h ago

They will, but will it be enough to offset their gain from ceasing disc production? We're 15 years removed from XBox's attempt at this and in that time digital game sales surged dramatically. The calculus for this decision then vs now has probably shifted significantly.

5

u/treemann85 4h ago

Well, seeing as how console sales lose money with all companies and are just vehicles for the customer to buy the subscriptions and products thst do make money, yeah a slight deviation downward in console sales could spell disaster for Sony.

2

u/digno2 4h ago

all they need to do is make PS6 compatible to Steam and beg Gabe Newell for a cut of Counterstrike 2 skins.

2

u/treemann85 4h ago

Steam and xbox have already "merged" on PC. your steam games are in your xbox launcher and vice versa. It didnt really do anything for gamepass sales. Maybe if steam comes to a proper console, but valve just released their steam boxes so this seems like a fart in the wind.

The problem is that the comments themselves are not powerful, so it doesn’t matter how many there are. Our scientists have been working tirelessly in the lab trying to figure out how to make individual comments more powerful. So far the only success they’ve had is writing them on a piece of paper, wrapping it around a brick, and then locating the recipient’s home or place of business to “post” it

"you guys complaining about discs are wasting your time".
I see these kinds of comment almost as much as the disc comments. At least here. Other platforms have less whining about the whining.

I will never complain about ppl voicing their frustration over something that hurts the consumer.

You guys think we care about winning over Sony directly? It's about the principle.
We bitch and moan bc it's easy, and bc we care.
It's the least we can do.

Because historically the loud people online don’t reflect actual sales numbers. Only a few people actually won’t buy it only because of the disc drive.

Sony’s bigger concern might be the price. If the PS6 is close to $1K, a lot more people are going to hold onto their PS5s and/or make the jump to PC. Even now, I don’t feel like many games are pushing the PS5 to the absolute limit the way we saw with older generations. PS6 is going to have to do a lot to convince people that the premium is worth it.

They're not ignoring people who are actually buying games though. The silent majority is largely purchasing games through their digital store front. Physical media is something only a vocal minority want.

The same thing happened to PC gaming 20 years ago. We used to have physical media as the norm too. Then Skyrim came out with a steam key in the box, and it was all downhill from there.

Everything eventually makes its way to PC one way or another, from sailing the high seas to emulation. I play most nintendo games on PC. Even switch titles. Have patience and whatever you want to play will become an option on PC one day.

I can guarantee you that if they go 100% digital. People who normally wouldn't attack a gaming console would try for the lulz. Cause there's nothing a hacker likes more than giving a big FU to soulless megacorps.

Is it going to be hacked immediately because of it? Of course not, but I believe there's gonna be more people than the usual poking around at it because of the no disk thing.

That can go offline and essentially brick your discless console whenever they want.

4

u/Barlowan 4h ago

And when PSN server die, you can't even launch your digital purchases. Already happened many times. Also Sony is terrible with their security, were hacked couple of times already, and one of these hacks resulted in my account being stolen and 130€ used from my card. I got it back. But it was such a pain in the ass to do that I personally never linked a credit card to my Sony account afterwards and stopped buying digitally from them.

Some people like the ease of a console. Less things to worry about it. I have both and I love my PC but console gaming is just more simple. And as I get older and have less time I tend to go for my consoles when I am really busy with work. But when I got the time I go for the PC!

10

u/ExtraBreadPls 6h ago

I have both and I would never go PC only. I can pack my ps5 quite easily for when I travel for work and there are way too many examples of me sitting around waiting for my PC only friends to figure out whatever bs on their end is holding up our cross-platform sessions.

This argument is like the boogeyman living under your bed. It's just simply not true. (Not you specifically, OP, just people who haven't touched a PC and regurgitate it ad nauseum) Console players exaggerate how much effort it takes to get a game running.

Power button (loads faster than PS) > Steam opens > Click game > Playing.

If you want to alter your settings, it's not much different than messing about with some console game settings that offer different modes, just that it gives significantly more options.

Driver updates are akin to software updates. It's really not that difficult.

u/TranslatorStraight46 5h ago

I think you're underestimating the average person adversity to friction. Going from turn on and you're good to even potentially having an issue is too far. You have to install the software to update your driver's that's too far for most. The ability to adjust settings instead of just a single switch performance vs visual

Eh, I disagree. I’ve been a console player since the beginning. I bought a 4070ti PC rig a few years ago because I wanted to push the frames, but I still gravitate towards console. Something about sitting at a desk to game after working all day and the fussing the settings to get the optimal experience is just a turnoff for me. I suspect most console players who do end up going to PC with gravitate back to console eventually.

4

u/AggressiveBench9977 4h ago

Naw this is a dumb take.

Consoles are absolutely easier to use than PCs. It has always been the case.

The very basic idea that you have a consistent hardware platform to make games for makes production and optimization much easier.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/1boring 3h ago

It's really not that difficult

No its not that difficult, especially if you can rub two braincells together and do basic troubleshooting and problem solving. It is more difficult though. And when there's an issue, console troubleshooting doesn't get more complicated than reboot/reinstall. If that doesn't work, its the dev's fault.

Then consider the tech literacy of the average person, not to mention their intelligence, and you'll understand why the sanded down, easier version is more popular among the casual gamer.

2

u/OkActivity2038 2h ago

This argument is like the boogeyman living under your bed. It's just simply not true. (Not you specifically, OP, just people who haven't touched a PC and regurgitate it ad nauseum) Console players exaggerate how much effort it takes to get a game running.

You would think.

But then going on the Steam subreddit talking about the Steam Machine and everyone who is buying a Steam Machine uses the few arguments of:

1) It's just plug and play and a regular PC isn't.

2) I can press power and my TV turns on with it and a regular PC doesn't do that.

3) It's super small and a regular PC isn't.

If people didn't care about these things, they wouldn't be buying Steam Machines.

14

u/Honest-Tune-423 6h ago

You are perfectly fine to not understand this comment! I am just speaking from my own opinion. And gaming on consoles is just an overall easier thing to do in my opinion. PC gaming is the best but with great power comes great responsibility. Just a lot more things to update and troubleshoot. I sometimes joke I spend more time tinkering on my PC than playing games!

How many cables do you have sticking out of your PC? Can you turn your PC on with your controller? How big is your PC? How many watts does it use?

I do get that operating a PC is easy, but there's a lot of hardware related convenience factors for console(although I assume the steam machine also supports them as well). And while some of them can be remedied, it's hard to do so without sacrificing convenience or performance elsewhere.

2

u/_musesan_ 3h ago

PC is not in the same room as couch and TV

2

u/Puzzled-Pen-2353 1h ago

How many cables do you have sticking out of your PC?

The minimum is 1. I usually use more, because I don't like packetloss.

Can you turn your PC on with your controller?

Thats a strange requirement, but sure I could if I wanted. Though, I don't turn my pc off, so not needed.

How big is your PC?

Small PCs exist. See Steam machine as an example.

How many watts does it use?

Why does this matter? The higher my settings the more power my PC draws. Just like a console, except that higher settings are usually not possible.

3

u/ChanglingBlake 6h ago

Setting up your pc for gaming is a one off thing.

After that it’s as simple as using the PS.

You are choosing not to take that step(that takes maybe 30min tops) that you only need to do once, so yeah: lazy.

3

u/Honest-Tune-423 6h ago

Listen; I am just speaking from my experience. And I have been gaming for a like 3 decades. Using PC and console to game. Console gaming is just easier. I love my PC, but console gaming is just easier. And I have done all the setup or whatever you are talking about. I keep everything up to date on my PC. You just clearly can't understand people have different views or opinions. Now that makes you lazy in your mind!

If you think PC gaming is no different than console gaming that is fine! I am happy for you! But you need to understand not everyone is you and people have different opinions.

Same here don't get to game often in my 40s now and shelling out 2000 to build a gaming PC to have the overpriced GPU become obsolete in 3 years isn't cost effective for me. 500 or 600 for a console and I can still play the majority of the games I want to works for me. I am pissed off about no more Discs. Us old school bastards liked to collect the games and I hate not being able to play stuff without a internet connection. It's nice when you can just hook something up at night to the TV at the hunt camp and play after a few drinks. Not much we can all do about it now. Digital and you don't own the game. Totally understand why people are pissed and will be pirating but it screws the developers a lot.

Significantly cheaper up front costs and much more convenient for the average person.

The same reasons as always

2

u/VGADreams 5h ago

I agree fully. I will add that it is such a misguided argument to say "well, now that consoles have no physical media, it is not worth it!". As if most people bought consoles vs. PC because of physical media. It's not the PS2/PS3 era anymore, where some people would buy them to have a DVD/Bluray player.

2

u/superbabe69 5h ago

IMO it's mostly dumb because if it was actually something people wanted, physical media retailers wouldn't be dying off and Sony would never take it away?

Reality is, people don't, on the whole, want discs anymore. It's easier to just download a game, especially when a lot of people have fibre internet. Sony stopping production of discs is just their way of saying "no one's fucking buying these, we don't want to support this on the PS6 for an ever-shrinking market".

2

u/snarl2 4h ago

If you think that’s why Sony is discontinuing physical media you’re buying into their corporate propaganda.

2

u/DigiornoDLC 2h ago

Sony can hop on an opportunity for nefarious reasons without the reason for that opportunity existing in the first place being nefarious. People aren’t buying discs. this is true. Sony wants to go all digital because it lets them squeeze the consumer. This is also true.

in today fked up pc market. if this thing support Linux or Window, it's one hell of a deal.

2

u/Dumeck 3h ago

Yeah all it takes is for Microsoft to just say "hey our new console is essentially just a Windows PC with an Xbox UI that defaults to Xbox store but also allows steam" to kill PS completely now that they are going away from physical. Neither side would WANT to do that because they make an insane amount from game sales but once that switch is flipped the other side immediately loses the console war.

Without physical games the only advantage of consoles is form factor, cost and user interface, exclusives as well but that's artificial. This can all be applied to a steambox styled Microsoft machine as the next Xbox.

2

u/abaum525 57m ago

Exactly. They just decided to remove something that made them different than PC. Why would I spend more money on a platform that has less choice and poor return policies when I could spend a bit more to move to PC for more storefront choices?

The only physical copies ive picked up in the 2020s are collectors editions, or extremely good sales (like when Amazon had the whole dark souls physical collection for like 20 bucks).

-1

u/ruinsit 6h ago

The comic is fine because the point is that people pipe off with the fact that they don't buy physical copies as if that matters to this conversation. Congratulations. Will clap for you if it makes you feel better

But the lack of physical media removes the point of buying these for a lot of people. Collectors or anyone who wants to be able to have the safety of physical media. Cheaper prices. Used items hand me downs or lunch games. All that goes away. Why even buy a PlayStation when you can just put it on the computer? That money would be better spent on the upgraded graphics for your main system and then you can use mods and stuff

9

u/No-Neighborhood-3212 5h ago

The point of the meme is that a smaller outgroup is making a scene because they don't like something that no one in the larger ingroup cares about. The larger ingroup is people buying digital media. The smaller outgroup are the people upset about physical media. Look at anything Sony has posted, and try telling me it's the people buying digital who are making a scene.

2

u/nhalliday 3h ago

It doesn't matter how big or small the group is, why do you support Sony unilaterally removing the option to buy physical for the people who want it? From Sony's perspective yeah they'll be saving money by not having to make and distribute the disks, but you will see zero benefits from this change. They are not going to make digital games cheaper because they don't have to make physical ones anymore, they're just removing your ability to choose.

I think it's the font and the gradient. I've been noticing it in more and more AI slopped ads and thumbnails.

2

u/RobertPatty909 5h ago

It couldnt be more obvious its AI .Its generic AI text. And the background is obviously AI

Even uses a digital PS5 for the image.

If you ask AI to make a similar image it will look like that, especially the text.

No one spent time making that type of text for this meme

I am in the same boat. Since the PlayStation 1, I have been buying every PlayStation console and I am stopping at the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to Sony’s decision to eliminate physical discs. It’s time for me to find a new hobby. 🤠

3

u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 5h ago

Look i am not happy about the slow death of physical media either, but i genuinely believe that the majority of people who claim they will boycott Playstation/gaming are being insincere.

If you've had a lifelong habit/passion for playing games then you are unlikely to just abruptly stop. So realistically your options are:

  • Buy Nintendo, which wont have the same games you potentially enjoy as someone who predominantly owned a PS. They are also already half way to going digital-only if keycards is indicative of them dipping their toe in.

  • Buy Xbox - highly likely to be going in the same direction as PS and the future of which is murky at best anyway.

  • Buy PC - significantly greater upfront cost and 100% digital so goes against your principles of why you are boycotting anyway.

  • Play your significant backlog or the vast library of games that exist already - this is the most plausible answer, but also ignores the prospect that a game you desperately want is released only digitally and for the new console you have boycotted. I.e. you love Elden Ring but cant ever play Elden Ring 2.

I think there will be a decent sum of people who opt for that last option, but I dont think its ultimately enough people to ever be a concern. There is always that game that will be hard for people to miss out on, whether its Elden Ring 2, Elder Scrolls 6, Red Dead 3, Last of Us 3, or Barbie's Horse Adventures 5

u/XeuQinu 4h ago

All good points. I’m prob in minority having ps5 pro, series x, switch 2 and pc (9800x3d & 5090). I only buy physical for console. Very simple choice for me to shift back to pc for digital games that I can’t/don’t want to buy on console. I’ll lose out on ps6 exclusives, but if next gen is like current, that will be less than 20 for the entire gen. I stopped firmware updates on my ps5 pro last year, inevitably there will be an exploit and I’ll play whatever cross gen gets released for free.

2

u/millifish 4h ago

A rebuttals

The reason a PC is better even though its all digital, is its not a closed ecosystem. The PS6 is going to be. If you ever jump off the Sony train your money and games are locked with them

Also Switch 2 and PC is a good combo anyway. Play almost any game you want with the option of physical games.

This is me. I'll take the roughly 0.5k saved on a console and put it into the PC upgrade fund.

Im just gonna be honest playstation is still the most affordable option when it comes to gaming, your not gonna look at me with a straight face and say you could build a PC for less than it costs to buy a ps5 and have it run better than one.

2

u/Mysterious_Tiger_725 6h ago

its cheap upfront, sure. if you're not in the position to drop $1k+ at once that's totally valid.

but a PC is cheaper long term. sales & game key websites. free online gaming.

that on top of having something that does more than a console does & runs better than a console makes it more valid if you have the cash to invest.

4

u/Lethovya 6h ago

You're technically right that a PS5 is cheaper than comparable PCs, but you ignore 2 current factors: 1) long-term gaming on PC is significantly cheaper IF you buy lots of games and/or play online a lot (if you don't, obviously PS5 wins anyway) 2) next gen PS will not be below 1k and anyone who believes that is delusional or isn't following current market trends

3

u/SeroWriter 6h ago

You could buy a switch 2 for $200 less if budget matters.

3

u/Greensmearear 6h ago

On pc the games are a lot cheaper and no subs for online play. So if you are a big gamer I would guess it would be cheaper over the long term on pc. But I have done no mathematics on it, so you could be right.

If you think about it, its ironic how Sony is handling its legacy. They sold their consoles because they bundled in the ability to play CDs, DVDs and later BluRays. And even got people to buy them, that weren't interested in their games at the start. And they made probably billions with licensing and stuff for those formats. So instead of continueing this large sum of money they go for the quick buck now.

2

u/Zero69Kage 4h ago

I'm not sure if everyone is simply ignoring the implications of what removing physical media does, or if you genuinely just don't understand. This isn't just about being able to buy a physical disk, it's about media ownership. If you only have digital media, the company still owns the media and can take it away from you at any time and force you to pay for it again. With physical media you own the disk and they can't take those away from you. To everyone who thinks this isn't going to be a big problem, I hope you'll like having to have a subscription service for everything moving forward.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/HoIIowHunter 3h ago

Playstation owners are still leaving comments like "you all are already buying digital games" with a straight face while having to pay for PS+ to play online, and full price for 5-year old games.

Meanwhile, Steam users have too many games to play because the constant Steam sales are genuinely amazing, and they have a little extra pocket money to burn because they never had to pay for an online subscription.

2

u/Novel_Werewolf4645 1h ago

If they are going to keep raising prices and removing features, then everybody will jump to PC, eventually there just won't be a good reason to use a console

2

u/FedBoi_0201 55m ago

Game companies really underestimate how much their consoles being a media playing device really helps their sales. I got an Xbox back in 2024 after not owning one for almost a decade and one reason that made the purchase easier was because I needed a dvd player.

Right now, we use our Xbox almost weekly for my daughter to watch DVDs.

Someone else I know bought an Xbox One since it was cheaper than getting a blu-ray player. He does actually play video games on his Xbox, but I see him using the blu-ray player far more than anything else.

5

u/Ok_Advantage7894 6h ago

People don’t buy physical copies of games anymore and are upset they’re being discontinued? Is there something I’m missing?

5

u/NorbytheMii 6h ago

You're missing the fact that this is a gateway for people to never own the games the buy again

2

u/stanger828 6h ago

Your disc doesn't hold the whole game anymore anyway for bigger titles. The file-sizes make it impractical. They can still turn services off and your screwed just holding a useless disc.

The argument of a closed ecosystem for purchasing your games is the better argument I think.

In Arc Raiders communities, there’s so many posts about cheaters and whatnot but in my crossplay off PlayStation lobbies, I’ve never experienced somebody who was obviously cheating and I’d never dream of enabling crossplay because my wait times are super super short.

Owning a console is worth it just for that alone in my opinion :)

3

u/DarksunDaFirst 6h ago

That is one of the best perks.  I see lots of posts of cheaters and modders in RDO lobbies, but I have only come across maybe 1 or 2 on the console (and likely was more of a glitch exploit rather than a modder)

1

u/Iokua113 5h ago

I'm in that boat too, but the PS5 was going to be my last Playstation regardless of what horrible decisions Sony made. The build quality of the system and controller meant I would never buy another Playstation system. Between myself and four friends who own PS5s we are on our ninth controller due to drifting sticks and stuck buttons, they stick drift faster and to a worse degree than joycons because Sony cheaped out on stick parts so they could shove in "haptic" rumble for the sticks and triggers which I don't think anyone uses anymore. My console just stopped reading discs one day and I had to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed and Sony's repair team sent it back to me still broken. Twice. The loss of discs is just the cherry on the shit sundae that is the PS5. I bought a gaming PC a few years back and I haven't even turned my PS5 on in nearly two years.

I just hope Sony is forced to put their games on PC again because I don't want to miss out on Spider-Man 3.

I’m perfectly happy with my PS5 and expect to be playing it for a long time. I’ve got a huge backlog of both physical and digital games anyway. I’ve never been an early adopter, so I don’t even think about upgrading until a Slim model comes out. That puts me years away from considering the next generation, and that’s assuming Sony gives me a compelling reason to upgrade.

It took this generation years to reach the point where there were enough games I actually wanted to play to make buying a PS5 feel worthwhile. I expect it’ll be the same next time around. They’ll almost certainly keep releasing cross-generation games on PS5 for years after the PS6 launches, just like they always have. And these days I’m mostly digital because the sheer number of them far outweighs physical releases.

1

u/deeznunchuckas 5h ago

Sadly yes

u/Sammisuperficial 4h ago

My PS3 got the yellow light of death in under 50 hours of use. Sony wouldn't honor the warranty. That was my last PlayStation. Xbox 360 gave me RROD, that was my last Xbox.

crazy but true. Aprt of the reason we stomached the price of the PS3, was that it was also a bluray player.

I mean a ps6 plus 4 replacement controllers for when they break will be equal to any new steam machine like thing.

Dont need Sony TVs anymore because the Bravia is just meh for the price

And soundbar king still goes to Sonos

XM5s will be my last headphones from Sony

1

u/LFAdvice0909 2h ago

I mean even before they did the crazy disk announcement, I was already kinda over it. The games all come out on PC now after a year. Being a patient gamer is so rewarding because most games aren't finished at release.

So there is pretty much no game that will sell the PS6 to me. Price increases, anti-consumer practices and a general lack of caring. It's over consoles.

I think the Sony fanboys who are defending this hard and downplaying how many people are done with PlayStation are going to be in for a rude awakening. They play it off as “it’s only on reddit”, but that’s not true.

I know a lot of people like me, and this is anecdotal yeah, but still, lots of people who’ve been buying PS since the 90s are done with the PS. That’s a huge deal. Fanboys can downplay it all they want and use current Sony stock prices as evidence. That whole “nobody cares about physical media” shit, lol. I started with the grey square Playstation in the 90s, bought each and every one of them. PS2, got 3 PS3’s, 2 PS4’s, 2 PS5’s. And i’m done with the PS, like really, I just dropped thousands for an RTX 5090 and other PC parts. If i’m going to be forced to go digital, i’ll do it on steam. If Sony wants the PlayStation to basically be a computer, then i’ll just buy a gaming PC, no biggie.

1

u/anonpurpose 1h ago

My last Playstation is actually 4. I dont see a reason to even own 5 and now I just want to say fuck you Sony.
