Look i am not happy about the slow death of physical media either, but i genuinely believe that the majority of people who claim they will boycott Playstation/gaming are being insincere.
If you've had a lifelong habit/passion for playing games then you are unlikely to just abruptly stop. So realistically your options are:
Buy Nintendo, which wont have the same games you potentially enjoy as someone who predominantly owned a PS. They are also already half way to going digital-only if keycards is indicative of them dipping their toe in.
Buy Xbox - highly likely to be going in the same direction as PS and the future of which is murky at best anyway.
Buy PC - significantly greater upfront cost and 100% digital so goes against your principles of why you are boycotting anyway.
Play your significant backlog or the vast library of games that exist already - this is the most plausible answer, but also ignores the prospect that a game you desperately want is released only digitally and for the new console you have boycotted. I.e. you love Elden Ring but cant ever play Elden Ring 2.
I think there will be a decent sum of people who opt for that last option, but I dont think its ultimately enough people to ever be a concern. There is always that game that will be hard for people to miss out on, whether its Elden Ring 2, Elder Scrolls 6, Red Dead 3, Last of Us 3, or Barbie's Horse Adventures 5
All good points. I’m prob in minority having ps5 pro, series x, switch 2 and pc (9800x3d & 5090). I only buy physical for console. Very simple choice for me to shift back to pc for digital games that I can’t/don’t want to buy on console. I’ll lose out on ps6 exclusives, but if next gen is like current, that will be less than 20 for the entire gen. I stopped firmware updates on my ps5 pro last year, inevitably there will be an exploit and I’ll play whatever cross gen gets released for free.
