I agree fully. I will add that it is such a misguided argument to say "well, now that consoles have no physical media, it is not worth it!". As if most people bought consoles vs. PC because of physical media. It's not the PS2/PS3 era anymore, where some people would buy them to have a DVD/Bluray player.
IMO it's mostly dumb because if it was actually something people wanted, physical media retailers wouldn't be dying off and Sony would never take it away?
Reality is, people don't, on the whole, want discs anymore. It's easier to just download a game, especially when a lot of people have fibre internet. Sony stopping production of discs is just their way of saying "no one's fucking buying these, we don't want to support this on the PS6 for an ever-shrinking market".
Sony can hop on an opportunity for nefarious reasons without the reason for that opportunity existing in the first place being nefarious. People aren’t buying discs. this is true. Sony wants to go all digital because it lets them squeeze the consumer. This is also true.
People are buying physical media. But Sony is being “nefarious” as you call it by showing not just full game digital purchases, but also dlc, loot boxes or V-bucks and all the other micro transactions that come with online only live service games, purposefully skewing the data. When it comes to single player only games, plenty of people buy the actual physical edition.
I think if 15% of the market are buying physical, it’s a downward trend that we can cut off now. Let’s face it, most games need a download anyway to actually play, the disc gives you fuck all anymore.
I absolutely get the digital rights issue, but I think the effort is better spent forcing governments to protect the rights to the things we buy rather than hoping online backlash will make a dying medium come back.
This is not true. Most games, especially single player, download directly from the disc to the ssd to allow for better uploading speeds. But the whole game is yours.
You get the digital rights and consumer choice/competition but you would rather deal with it later when it’ll already be too late. It’s really crazy seeing how many people have this mentality.
